The classic 90s gameshow 'The Crystal Maze' is returning for a one-off special in aid of Stand Up for Cancer next month on Channel 4! It will be hosted by Stephen Merchant with the team consisting of Rio Ferdinand, Michelle Keegan, Jonnie Peacock, Sara Cox and Josh Widdicombe. In it's original run, it was one of Channel 4's highest rated shows and it is often named as one of the best UK gameshows. There are four zones that each contain a number of challenges, with the more challenges you complete, the more crystals you earn. The crystals give the contestants more time to complete the final challenge. The success of the show has led to a recent 'live immersive experience' being set up this year where the public can play the maze for themselves.

Are you looking forward to this one-off special and would you like to see a full series?

wonder if they remake it they'll keep it going for the public like that kickstarter one...? i wanna crystal maze so bad

Posted by: dandy* 29th September 2016, 05:33 PM

OMG I'd love to see this return for a proper series, it was amazing back in the day! I used to want to be on it so badly and was gutted when it ended.

Posted by: Froot. 5th October 2016, 04:27 PM

Will be airing on Sunday 16th October at 9pm!

Didn't realise they would just make Stephen Merchant into the original presenter because I'm sure the original one would be happy to do it? laugh.gif

Posted by: jakewild 5th October 2016, 04:46 PM

THE HEAD LOL OMG

Posted by: Froot. 17th October 2016, 10:01 AM

It was filmed in the Crystal Maze experience which means its return makes sense as they didn't have to waste money on building a new set!

I quite enjoyed it although the celebrities were a bit dumb at times. I liked the comedic tone Stephen brought.

Posted by: Suedehead2 17th October 2016, 12:58 PM

Yes, but puzzle boy enjoyed himself.

At 74, he's probably not as spritely as he was - not sure he'd be able to gallop off, taking a celeb by the arm like he used to.

Aw! I missed it! sad.gif
From what I saw on Challenge, it looks great.

Confirmed today that Channel 4 have picked up a full series with Richard Ayoade taking over as host.

Posted by: Count Olaf 14th January 2017, 12:05 PM

Glad that it will be returning! It seems like they're going all out as well as they're building a new 30,000 square foot set rather than filming on the Crystal Maze experience set again and they've commissioned 20(!) new episodes!

Think Richard will be a great host as well.

Posted by: Danuary 14th January 2017, 12:07 PM

wasn't a big fan of the celebrity special but I like Richard Ayoade (on Big Fat Quiz) so I'll give this another go.

Posted by: Klaus 27th May 2017, 10:20 AM

Filmed at a new purpose built set that is over 30,000 square feet! (the Stand Up to Cancer special was filmed at the interactive Crystal Maze experience) It was created by the original designer .

There will be 20 hour long episodes (which may suggest it will be on in the daytime? or perhaps running at say 7/8:00 every weekday night?) and there will also be more special celebrity editions.

Looking forward to this, hopefully the people will be smarter than those in the Stand Up to Cancer special laugh.gif

Returns June 23rd with a Celebrity special

Posted by: lewistgreen 12th June 2017, 09:57 AM

Two new characters will be joining Richard Ayoade in the series. Adam Buxton will play Jarhead in the Futuristic Zone and Jessica Hynes will play The Knight in the Medieval Zone.

Confirmed contestants for the first episode (for Stand Up To Cancer) are Ore Oduba, Alex Brooker, Vicky Pattison, Louie Spence and Lydia Bright.

Oh GOD, Louie Spence needs to GET LOST IN THE MAZE and never find his way out.

Posted by: Mack 14th June 2017, 11:50 AM

Really looking forward to the revival of this, Hoping I won't be disappointed with it.

Richard Ayoade was so many kinds of amazing, him running around with the golden hand, his general despondency and then the marching off stage at the end have me totally SOLD.

Posted by: Mack 26th June 2017, 12:09 PM

Well I loved it and think Richard Ayoade is perfect as host. As for people complaining about 'Z Listers' - I recognised all of them just Louis Spence the only bad thing about it.. Can't wait for the next episode.

Posted by: Klaus 26th June 2017, 03:07 PM

The new set looked brilliant! Richard was fab too, better than Stephen for me. His quick dry wit is perfect.

Posted by: Mack 27th June 2017, 12:35 PM

I'm sure everyone recognised the people who were on the show on Friday as the likes of Vicky Pattison and Lydia Bright feature in gossip stories quite regularly, Ore Oduba won Strictly Come Dancing and has stood in on The One Show, Alex Brooker has featured on a few comedy-themed shows and Louie Spence is well-known for his flamboyant/camp nature.

Posted by: Calcified Froot 7th October 2017, 09:14 AM

Still very much enjoying this, largely down to Richard! He is amazing as host, so quick-witted and dead-pan. I find him hilarious. He really makes it worth watching.

Posted by: Klaus 3rd June 2018, 09:43 AM

Returning for another celebrity run next Friday with Dame Kelly Homes, Greg Rutherford, Alfie Deyes, Jorgie Porter and Big Narstie (!) all in the first episode.

Very hyped for Big Narstie!!

Kind of hope that they introduce some new games.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 3rd June 2018, 03:32 PM

This celebrity run marks the start of the new series, there are definitely new games.

Richard quite often refers to the team members as 'lads'. Has anyone heard anyone else refer to a mixed gender group as lads before?

A "great bunch of lads" is used here to refer to a group of people regardless of gender, so yes. We also use it in the singular as well, ie "James is a great bunch of lads".

I watched a few clips of this on YouTube earlier, and wow it's so good! We need something similar on TV over here... but Richard Ayoade is one of a kind tongue.gif

Posted by: Suedehead2 3rd August 2018, 07:50 PM

I was never much of a farm of the original show but Richard Ayoade has proved to be an inspired choice of presenter.

Richard Ayoade MAKES the new show!

The London Girls was a highlight episode, a real life example of disappearing weaves

That team was ghastly. Thankfully Richard Ayoade made the programme still watchable.

The Crystal Maze will be returning later on this year with 13 new episodes, including a Christmas special but the Medieval Zone will be replaced by the Eastern Zone.

i ended doing this in manchester last year for my birthday and my god do i wish they filmed the hot mess that it was!

looking forward to a new series absolutely love this show

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 25th May 2019, 08:10 AM

I'm not surprised they've got rid of Medieval tbh, none of the games really fit in there (toy shop, building a fan etc).

Posted by: Mack. 9th July 2019, 06:54 PM

Just caught up with this weeks, have to say the team in the VR round were awful and Susan had very right to be miffed! I agree i didn't foresee that Vic would be the star player !

Posted by: Mack. 18th August 2021, 09:52 PM

Apparently it has been axed.
