the new Little Mix will get off to a quick start, Top 5 on itunes? shame they're releasing the dull tropical one instead of Power but there you go

Also Ed invasion incoming, Galway Girl to smash x

Posted by: mrbrightside 3rd March 2017, 12:37 AM

That 'Galway Girl' is the cheesiest thing going. Such awful lyrics. Sounds like 'In Blue' era The Corrs which is so not a good thing. No doubt it will chart highly.

And as for 'Perfect' being better than 'Thinking Out Loud' according to Ed...nothing could be further from the truth. It's formulaic and contrived. Again should be a big hit.

Ed Sheeran domination not as much as I thought. I thought more of his songs would be iTunes top 40 by now.

Posted by: 777666jason 3rd March 2017, 09:00 AM

More people only just waking up give him a few hours now

Posted by: Tinasha 3rd March 2017, 09:01 AM

Ed's chart domination will come more from Spotify than iTunes I'd imagine

Posted by: omrimayo 3rd March 2017, 09:09 AM

It's only 9am and he has 2 album tracks on the top 40. Soon all of them will be cuz most of them already top 100.

Posted by: Mart!n 3rd March 2017, 09:37 AM

Ed Sheeran madness here we come, other artists should have waited for next week to release new music they have no chance, Little Mix might just get a top 40 chart position.

Posted by: Bjork 3rd March 2017, 10:07 AM

was expecting to wake up and have the entire iTunes top 40 filled with ed album tracks, agree the effect will probably be bigger on Spotify

I'm a fan but after a couple listens I think the album is terrible and easily his worst, the lyrics are beyond bad, his attempts at rap are embarrassing, Barcelona might be the worst song I've ever heard or at least the one including more cliches smile.gif

Posted by: Lenny 3rd March 2017, 10:10 AM

Ed Sheeran just seems to be rehashing everything he's already done before from what I've heard. Shape Of You aside.

New Cash Cash & ROZES is decent, wonder if that will get anywhere

I like the drop in that one, it is quite lively and funky compared to the usual future bass drop.

If Radio 1 playlists it in the coming weeks, I suppose it could make low top 40 officially eventually, same with offaiah - Run, but I can't see Radio 1 daytime playlisting offaiah as it doesn't sound very commercial and sounds more nighttime 'dance anthems'.

Ugh great so Play That Song probably will outpeak HSS now no.gif

Posted by: mrbrightside 3rd March 2017, 11:50 AM

Is the Lorde song a grower? I wasn't too fussed on first listen.

Ed needs to go away. He's had a handful of genuinely good songs but this new stuff is just abysmal. I'm sure people will look back on it and cringe. Those faux-Irish songs are the worst things I've heard for a long time. He needs to take another year out sooner rather than later.

It's from their upcoming EP. Presumably not a radio single just something for the fans whilst SJLT gets them the chart hit.

Guess so. sad.gif

When albums are so expensive I guess cherry picking after listening makes a lot of sense, if it's Ł12 and you only like 10 songs then you're saving money. Unless you like having the complete album, I would always prefer to have all of it even if I don't like every song. But when singles sales are so low I can understand the album tracks getting so high on iTunes.

Same with Martin Garrix and The Chainsmokers' new songs...there are lots of better dance songs out there, but they seem to be selling/streaming a lot on their name and the names of their collaborators.

I have seen short term boosts in the past, may be not significant but anyway Ed is on "The One Show" as well in an hour or so, I will be surprised if he doesn't regain the lead by the end of the day (with whatever he performs).

Galway Girl hitting #1 would be awesome! It's so so different to anything we've had in the charts of late and culturally important too as it brings Irish influences to the chart. The best track on the album by far.

09. Lorde - Green Light 0.4910

Bizarre that Ed's tracks are all already dark red (even the one he performed on The One Show) so I think I might just have a dodgy update tbh.

EDIT: After refreshing like 4 times, writing this post and then refreshing again after I post this... it's obviously sorted itself out lmao.

Bizarre that Ed's tracks are all already dark red (even the one he performed on The One Show) so I think I might just have a dodgy update tbh.

EDIT: After refreshing like 4 times, writing this post and then refreshing again after I post this... it's obviously sorted itself out lmao.

Yeah, that's a '????' update which totally gives the total opposite colour to the correct update and gives figures of the previous update. Just look for the '????' at the top of the page and you'll know it's wrong.

Correct figures:
07. Ed - Galway Girl 0.5013
08. Ed - Perfect 0.4895
09. Lorde - Green Light 0.4697
10. Ed - Castle 0.4374

I don't even mind his music, Shape Of You and Castle On The Hill are decent/listenable but I think there's a bit of sheep mentality with the public to buy/stream what's popular or hyped the most, it's been a problem with the charts recently. It's annoying because new artists have it harder than ever trying to break through.

What a ridiculous thing to say. Just because you don't like him doesn't mean other people won't. There's no denying his incredible talent. I don't listen to him because other people do, I listen to him because I find some of his songs relatable & his voice is brilliant.

Careful there. He's talented sure, but he's no genius of our time and if anything he's a key example of where some initial promise and heartfelt lyrics from a musician with potential to hit crossed bases turned into huge record label backing to recreate the moment in a way that's accessible to as many people as possible, but also loses the personal uniqueness he had at first. Which is both the reason for his success and why those who... broad strokes here... are more discerning, have a problem with him.

I take him song by song at this stage, Castle On The Hill is a pretty good recreation of his lyrical talent (although nowhere near what he did at first) while Shape Of You is a trend-chasing dull affair. I expect the album to be a mix of that. Jack's right in the way playlists and recommendation lists are set up to encourage people to listen to this non-threatening easy-listening popstar in the background because there's a lot of investment in him which annoys people - but that doesn't mean people can't like him if they really do.

Posted by: The Wise Sultan 4th March 2017, 03:15 PM

Castle On The Hill brings back the sort of Snow Patrol type sound to the charts so that is good. Nancy Mulligan is a better Irish influenced song than Galway Girl I think.

There is a sheep mentality, considering the Chainsmokers domination in dance in the charts is becoming like the David Guetta domination in the early 2010s, and there are plenty of better dance songs out there better imo than Martin Garrix's two recent rather generic future bass songs, but they seem to be popular because he's Martin Garrix and they both feature well known vocalists who have had hits before. Tbh I would call Martin Garrix's two recent songs very loosely dance as they are not very dancey songs, to me they are just pop songs with a not very danceable to (imo) electronic drop.

I totally see what Jack means. Ed is forced down the throats as some hugely credible artist, it's quite inescapable and a lot of people I know that know pretty much nothing about music automatically 'love' Ed Sheeran. That's not to say he doesn't have some good music, but he really is pushed as 'real music', when a lot of people who loved him are the same people who'd turn their noses up at out and out pop - not knowing that Ed uses a lot of the same co-writers and producers as those artists.

Posted by: Taylor Jago 4th March 2017, 05:01 PM

What I hate is how some people have this sort of "if you're not dancing to it, you don't care what song is on" attitude. If you're not bothered about what song is on, why are you even listening to music anyway?

Having said that, they're not really listening to music, they're just hearing it. There's a big difference between the two.

I do get that, explaining it that way is a good way to put it. I love Ed LOADS but a lot of people I know irl who don't really listen to a wide range of music do act like he's the only person ever to write and produce his own music and that makes him so far above anyone else. I enjoy Ed's music for what it is, not becasue he's a "real talent" and so much above out and out the same old pop.

Posted by: Bjork 4th March 2017, 06:02 PM

it's what they're trying to do will lots of UK artists recently, Ed, Adele, George Ezra, James Bay, but actually none of them write their own songs, they always co-write with others, an even with teams...

Posted by: Jonjo 4th March 2017, 06:10 PM

And what's the problem with co-writing? (Just a general question, not trying to talk down to you haha)

Tbh, as long as the song is good, I don't really care if the artist has written it or not. It's such a snobby way to view things, imo. Obviously it's a bonus if I know it's written by that artist, but if it's not and it's a jam, I don't really hold it against them as it isn't really fair.

As then it is real emotion expressed by the artist. If not, they become somgbirds, or even as low as the Westlife coverband puppet level.

Posted by: Bjork 4th March 2017, 06:28 PM

for me personally it's different
writing your songs on your own
or working with those teams and adding a comma here, a comma there

of course a good song is a good song and a good artist is a good artist
but for me a real singer songwriter does not need a team to work with

Well little mox and 1 direction are party bands and 0 clue how to write songs. They sit in song writing teams and add comas or change a word here or there with no input to the melody either. That type of 'co write' or Beyonce's even more egregious form of accepting aongs if she can have her names on the credits -and no song writer is refusing that- is what should be looked down upon.

I thought most solo artists co-wrote. Often it just means that the artist wrote a song and then someone else looked at it and made some suggestions.

The bigger they get the less chance thwy have of that happening, as the record company gets a huge vested interest in them doing well. Then come the overproduced albums - chexk out Coldplay after their 4th.

I think being a songwriter of a persons own material helps people like the artist as well as the material. For start the artist is much more able to articulate the thought and process behind the song when interviewed and surely has a more personal connection to it thus can sell it better during performances.

Someone like you is obviously a great song but it was when Adele nailed it with every drop of emotion she had pouring into the song during the Brits that it became one of the songs of the century and cemented Adele as the artist she is.

For someone co-writing the song, that could surely mean the artist writes all the lyrics but others had input into the melody and musicality?

Like for example, most traditional pop artists aren't going to do all the production on the song themselves.

Yeah exactly! Songwriters naturally have different talents and it's probably quite hard to craft a whole song by yourself. Not many artists do it, Taylor Swift wrote the entirety of Speak Now and co-produced all of it too, Alanis Morrisette did the same with Jagged Little Pill. But I think to know all the components for a chart hit today, to have that ear for it, it's very hard for one person to do it all! It's probably more common for these singer-songwriter types in rock or country to write their songs because it's a more organic and clean sound that's probably a bit easier to craft on your own with your own ideas.

Glen Ballard co-wrote all the music on Jagged Little Pill and co-produced it.
I don't really approve of producers getting co-writing credits, but I know some of them do.

I believe Alanis actually did write all the songs herself. There's a story of he rbeing mugged when she first went to LA and she had only two bags on her; one with her money etc
and the other with the JLP songs.
Glen might have had a little input but it was mainly just Alanis writing.

tbh I'd call Love My Life a big hit - it's a 'hit' in the same sense that Hurts by Emeli Sande was, although it didn't necessarily do too well charts-wise, most people I'm friends with know the song well by now (bear in mind my friends are all 17/18 so I'd definitely consider it a hit) and my parents love the track biggrin.gif

nope, they cowrote all songs, Ballard was not just the producer but the co-writer, actually he did most of the music while Alanis did most of the lyrics
you can listen to the genesis of the songs on Spotify, check the Jagged Little Pill album commentary

Well it is teenagers that probably influence the chart the most those days, especially with streaming! I would say the majority of those who influence streaming charts are probably in the 13-16 year old bracket rather than the 17-18 year old bracket though.

It's more likely that there's a sample they used (probably the fiddle) which means they have to additionally credit the writers of the song the sample came from.

I am hoping out of that list Shooting Stars is a hit (although it isn't as good as the similarly named Flip and Fill song!). Also On My Mind is definitely better than Disciples' stuff after They Don't Know, which I liked, glad they have gone a bit less minimal now. Unlikely either is a hit though.

Cloudbusting does look like it will go low top 40 eventually officially once Radio 1 decide to playlist it.

This is a better Galway Girl than the Ed Sheeran song, remember it as it was on an advert about 10 years ago!

Solo Dance rising so quickly is baffling, it doesn't even have that many youtube views and isn't playlisted by Radio 1. I thought it usually took longer for a song to become a hit these days and rise up the chart, especially from an unknown artist like Martin Jensen. danG suggested it is because of spotify payola for the top playlists but if he is right, why is it so high on itunes now too with little airplay?

Discounted price and commercial radio airplay.

That too I guess.

Speaking of which, Lorde's new single is out and is the first song featured on Hot Songs

18. Lorde - Green Light
59. Lorde - Liability

Hoping Green Light gets a big push. Would be great to see it go 59p once the Ed domination has calmed down a bit.

You suggested it was because of spotify payola that it became a hit in the first place, if thats right that would explain why it is not lagging so far behind on spotify than the itunes chart like we usually see with newer songs at first by less well known artists.
