you do have to wonder what the compilers of the new music friday spotify playlist are thinking sometimes. Aston Merrygold is far more noteworthy a release than most of the songs that actually did make the playlist.

I imagine Payola comes into this though and Aston's record label must've not paid for a place on the playlist.

never got how they compile the new music friday Spotify playlist, they miss so many new releases (the other week they missed James Arthur, Tori Amos, Celine Dion) and then they add remixes of old songs, album tracks,... agree must be payola...

Looks like Weeknd will climb to #2 on iTunes by the end of today. Number 1 will be a struggle though. I reckon he might have top 3 on the chart on lock, if he keeps increasing on spotify at this rate.

I believe officially you are meant to "pitch" songs to streaming services for consideration for playlists, in the same way they do with radio stations.

But it's suspected that payola goes on too.

http://www.billboard.com/articles/business...eaming-services

Either way, it's not so much down to predicting what's going to be a hit - it's all politics and money as opposed to being about good songs.

It's just the same in radio - apparently the reason Calum Scott hasn't been playlisted by Radio 2 is because no one has "presented" the song to them. Why they wouldn't play it anyway beggars belief. Apart from it being shit of course, but the point is it's a massive hit and perfect for their playlist so why aren't they playing it?

What's the Keane song? I though they had split up?
It's taken from the movie soundtrack 'A Monster Calls' (which looks like it could be pretty good/a big hit)!

Teddy Mac falling at a comical rate.

(I know it's for charity but it's really the type of song I don't like)

Dark green update for Teddy Mac - media will be all over the success of this and I'm expecting it to remain stable for at least a few days yet.

The Teddy Mac thing I haven't even heard it yet, its a tempting offer, but I feel I'm going to be let down by something awful, and now Quando Quando Quando is up by the same artist.

It's a cover of the Frank Sinatra song, in the style of him too (makes sense though, he is about 80 years old).
