Kacey Musgraves] #60 Jack Harlow ~ Lovin On Me One of the most recent songs here now comes from Jack Harlow, a bit of a surprise entry here as I'm not a fan of his and his previous big UK hits didn't do anything for me. Lovin On Me being a big #1 makes a lot of sense though helped by a very catchy sampled hook and Jack's fun white boy persona. Another recent-ish track which is still growing in the chart now, coming from Zach Bryan who I'd never expected to make a hit here but I can't deny a very well-written duet. The sparse orchestration assists it a fair bit too and ultimately it's a song that for many has been one of the very few country hits worth getting behind. Another surprise in the year was Skepta now becoming a dance producer and after a handful of non-hits he ended up remixing a classic Amy Winehouse track. Ultimately it's not that essential of a remake so it fell down my chart rather quickly but it is nice to hear Amy's great vocal over a more modern production I guess. Next up a song that whilst credited to Jazzy, she is probably the least interesting part of it, with the production doing most of the lifting here. Whilst nothing outstanding it does its job as a gym workout song so got a fair few plays that way. Jazzy will be back later of course. And here's Fred again.. this time teaming with Skrillex on production bringing dubstep back to the chart. Despite the song having very little melody they managed to make it work with the rumbling bassline being the big focus making for a very unique hit song. It's also assisted a lot by the rap from Flowdan (great name, if only I'd thought of it for myself first). |

#51 Jain ~ Makeba #52 Miley Cyrus ~ Flowers #53 David Guetta, Anne-Marie and Coi Leray ~ Baby Don't Hurt Me #54 Borai & Denham Audio ~ Make Me #55 Noah Kahan ~ Stick Season Noah Kahan first-up with a song that could very well appear higher on this list next year as it's still steadily rising the chart. His style of folk-pop isn't really to my taste for the most part with the exception of this song which naturally became his biggest hit. It's very well done song which is perfect for this time of year too and a breath of fresh air in the chart - UK #1 in January surely awaits it. Time for another dance remake now because of course, we ended up randomly getting a re-do of "U Sure Do" in the lower quarter of the chart for a few weeks by two faceless DJs. I didn't get into it as much as I wanted to as it's fairly inspired for a commercial dance remake but ultimately isn't quite amazingly good. David Guetta will make an appearance later on with another big dance remake but for now we get his re-do of "What Is Love" which I quite enjoyed for a couple of weeks before eventually deciding it wasn't really worth bothering with. It's not half as bad as a load of people made it out to be anyhow but he can do better. Miley Cyrus had the year's biggest hit with 'Flowers' which sure was a well-made pop song but ultimately tired on me long before it tired on the remainder of the general public. If only a certain rap hit had an earlier release date I suspect that would've taken the title but oh well. Miley has had a couple of better tracks but she's done many far worse too so I can't moan. Randomly taking off on TikTok this year giving it a chart reset we have 'Makeba', which was a lot bigger in my chart at the time of its release but had a little chart revival anyhow also assisted by a new remix. It's a great song anyhow which I'm glad has been a bit more appreciated now, I'd hoped its virality would've translated into a bit more success than it got as it's a very unique pop song but at least it cracked the UK chart briefly. |

Aw at 'Rumble' being so low here! That, 'I Remember Everything' and 'Creepin'' are some big faves from the last few posts (maybe 'The Night We Met' could be too with more listens, I actually only heard it for the first time the other day but can immediately hear why it's become such a streaming staple).

#46 Freya Ridings ~ Weekends #47 Rita Ora ~ You Only Love Me #48 Cassö with Raye and D-Block Europe ~ Prada #49 Rudimental, Charlotte Plank and Vibe Chemistry ~ Dancing is Healing #50 Dua Lipa ~ Houdini Starting off the top 50 we have the latest from Dua Lipa. 'Houdini' is an excellent stand-out pop track that proves she is here to stick around as one of the top players commercially. It could of course only get so far with just a month of release but it could very well contend for a spot in the Top 100 next year. We may well see Dua again before long. Rudimental benefitted somewhat from the DnB revival this year, although not as much as Chase & Status, they did manage one hit in the year. It wasn't their strongest track ever really but a perfectly serviceable pop-friendly DnB track. Having already been a hit as "Ferrari Horses" the public decided what we really needed was a dance re-do of it as an even bigger hit than the original, and well it's not bad but as far as massive dance hits go the UK has had better. It's good at least to see something this high-tempo for dance get mainstream crossover appeal and also that the focus is more firmly placed on Raye's vocals. Rita Ora attempted a comeback this year and well, actually had a fairly good pop effort but clearly she's long-past her commercial peak now so the song struggled in the chart unfortunately. The song itself probably would've been more suited to the mid-2010s climate too I guess but it was her strongest of the current era. We also had Freya Ridings struggle a bit from leaving it too long since her previous album with a song that ought to have been a bigger hit than it ended up being. 'Weekends' was a strong return giving us the sort of pop that she ought to be doing more of over the slow ballads. |

#41 Dua Lipa ~ Dance the Night #42 Becky Hill and Chase & Status ~ Disconnect #43 Kylie Minogue ~ Tension #44 Anotr and Abel Balder ~ Relax My Eyes #45 La Zarra ~ Évidemment Barely counting as 'mainstream' we have the French Eurovish entry which scraped a top 100 placement post-contest. The performance didn't quite go off on the night how I'd hoped which led to a midtable position but it's a very grand and strong song so I'm glad it got a bit of love anyway. A song you'd perhaps have expected to end up rather highly in my chart now given it's a house effort that crossed over to the UK top 40, alas 'Relax My Eyes' didn't quite hit for me much as I'd liked it to. It's got a great groove to it anyhow though I wish it had better vocals. Kylie again with the album title track 'Tension' which is another fun pop bop from her. It was great to see her continuing to win me over again with this era although she was never going to be able to make something half as amazing as the album's lead.. Chase & Status have two tracks of their own yet to come but until then here's their team-up with Becky Hill which got her one of her biggest UK hits yet. It was certainly a great switch up for her singing on something a bit more energetic and it worked very well. Hopefully some more bangers to come for her forthcoming album next year. And indeed, life really has been f***ing lifeing xx Dua Lipa back now with soundtrack hit 'Dance the Night', which is only above 'Houdini' because of timing but hey, it was a bit of a steady grower - and certainly worked well for the Barbie dance scene. How many of these personal charts do I have left before the inevitability of death eh? |

Ooh I do like Makeba - nice to see that finally get a chart position after all these years! Dancing is Healing is fab as well - one of the few mainstream songs to hit my Top 40 this year.

#36 Fred Again.., Skrillex and Four Tet ~ Baby Again.. #37 Troye Sivan ~ Rush #38 Lizzy McAlpine ~ Ceilings #39 Kenya Grace ~ Strangers #40 Rema ~ Calm Down [feat. Selena Gomez] Another banga! Rema had one of the year's biggest hits with 'Calm Down' which also became the biggest hit for the afrobeats genre yet. It's certainly a catchy effort and further helped by Selena Gomez whose addition fit surprisingly well with her smooth vocal. A couple of female vocalist breakthroughs now, first from Kenya Grace whose track 'Strangers' was also self-produced. A rather fresh lite DnB effort with a smooth vocal performance, it was pleasing to hear this as the result after the track broke into the top 40 seemingly out of nowhere. Follow-ups so far haven't been quite so good but we'll see what next year brings. A rare singer-songwriter ballad breaking through now from Lizzy McAlpine however I am quite open to this type of song when done beautifully as such. It builds very well hitting the emotional impact it aims for which certainly helped it stand out in the chart. Troye Sivan isn't someone I'm a huge fan of so I wasn't expecting much from a new era of his however when we got a smooth dance bop with a very catchy hook of course I could get on board. 'Rush' does just what its title intends really. Just missing out on a Hottest 200 spot sadly it is Fred & Skrillex... again! This time with added Four Tet and a Lil Baby sample. 'Baby Again..' is a fairly uncommercial track so for it to have even cracked UK top 100 said a lot about how big a name Fred is now, though it deserved better of course. Quite a hypnotic track which would hit hard in the club, something I'd hope to hear more of from Fred next year. And here is where we pause the Mainstream 75 and jump to the Hottest 200 as 35 mainstream hits managed to crack it this year (an increase on last year!), let's goooooooo |

Giving I Miss You a listen now - thought I recognised the name Simon Ward, turns out he's the lead singer of The Strumbellas (who will be making an appearance in my EOY - hadn't realised he'd branched out to dance features though!) this song sounds pretty nice though, his vocals go well with the beat and melody.

A few listens later and I was hooked by its lo-fi beat and looped samples which I'd discover came from Tina Turner 'Private Dancer'. It is reminiscent of the old house trend but I found it to be a rather inventive sample use, and its 5 minute runtime seems to go by rather quickly.
