www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/priti-patel-israel-army-idf-foreign-aid-money-british-holiday-meetings-netanyahu-international-a8041716.html%3famp

Priti Patel, International Development Secretary, discussed giving FOREIGN AID to the ISRAELI ARMY!!

I think this is a HUGE scandal, overshadowed only by the other Paradise Papers revelations.

It is an entirely Republican move and shows the LURCH to the right of the Tory party. I find it utterly shocking that she was willing to do this, then revealed it was SEVERAL meetings. She is now refusing to answer MP questions. It is an extremely arrogant government that keeps these meetings secret, then refuses to answer to the sovereignty of Parliament.

I don't know why she thought it was a good idea to copy the Republicans, then use money DESIGNED for foreign aid and EXPRESSLY want to give it to a foreign military. If they wanted to copy the Republicans, it should have been a policy in their manifesto that people would vote for and Parliament could discuss. It also makes the UK look more and more like Trump's lapdog.

For many years British policy on Israel / Palestine has been broadly neutral. Patel clearly doesn't agree with this policy. One question is whether she was acting entirely on her own initiative or whether she had discreet (but deniable) backing from elsewhere.

I think the latter is more probable, especially given the silence from Mad May.

Surrupetitiously changing a nation's stance from neutral to active involvement, or in this case AT BEST benevolent neutrality, is a MASSIVE deal. The fact that nothing of indignation has left No.10 suggests plausiblr deniability backing to me.

I'm a fan of Priti Patel, one of the few Conservative politicians that are actually proper Conservative, not this "wet", pandering to Labour voters nonsense.

Um the party is extremely right wing right now??

What do you nake of this scandal? It is appalling. Do you think she should continue in this post? At the VERY LEAST she undermined the foreign sec, before even looking at the other aspects of this appalling behaviour.

And we know that undermining the Foreign Secretary is Boris Johnson's job laugh.gif

If Priti Patel wants the UK to be more pro-Israel then I support her stance. As for Boris, he's a legend. Boris Johnson is definitely a future PM in waiting.

She circumvented parliament and the foreign secretary with secret meetings. Surely this should be a government policy to be voted on and in a manifesto? Where is our control?

Boris is in no way a legend and neither is he pm material. He was born into power and is just another Trump.

No. Only those that actually ARE Nazi/fascist supporters with actual factual proof that they support those organisations. Like Trump. Farage.

Priti Pratel isn't a fascist she's a typical elitist snobby callous Tory, loving the rich and those that can help you get personally rich while mouthing platitudes to the masses (without actually supporting any policies to put her money - or rather OUR money - where her mouth is).

Definitely not a fascist or a Nazi. Bit odd that she's meeting Israeli military though don't you think?

Number 10 confirms that the Prime Minister learned about Priti Patel's plan to give aid money to the Israeli army from the BBC, today.

That was literally after May had taken Patel in to give her a 'dressing down'.

Patel is currently flying out to Uganda, whilst the media apparently brief Number 10 of details of meetings in Israel that she hasn't really told them about! SHAMBLES.

opinions of an actual former FO person (it appears):

2/ Boris gaffe was stupid but affects just one family & hopefully won't have repercussions & can be remedied. (Why he is FM another matter)
3/ but to Pritii Patel: firstly she committed a deliberate act that wld have seen any FCOstaff instantly sacked. But it's worse than that...
4/ to undertake planned secret meeting in foreign country outside of FCO required use of own communication-a clear security risk
5/ such a visit instantly opens up minister to blackmail not just because of her secret behavior but because she cld not use UK secutity....
6/ all FCO visits depend on securing/sweeping. As a individual Patel cld not do. this she was thus vulnerable to pressure/blackmail
7/ from reports we know that Israeli security reps present. Patel was this going in unprotected in talks with a separate state. It's not....
8/ no exaggeration to say such behavior is normally classed as close to spy/becoming a foreign asset for Patel to not be removed thus.....
9/ opens up view that such behavior ok/tolerated. If so UKas serious reliable power collapses, can every minister operate own ForeignPolicy?
10/ if so this will encourage all sorts of states to replicate such policy & so to end I return to the start....
11/ such behavior by FCOstaff is classed for above reasons similarly to spying-so instant dismissal. If Patel not sacked UK foreign policy..
12/...essentially says it can be brought individually minister by minister & we're totally ok with that. /ends (sorry for wordy thread!)

This government is an absolute shambles "led" by a weak and pathetic Prime Minister. Chaotic and embarrassing. Theresa commands no authority in her own Cabinet let alone the wider party, Parliament or the country. It's pathetic.

BREAKING: So I am hearing that Priti Patel is likely to be sacked within hours. That would be two cabinet ministers gone in a week.

Via Robert Peston

If she doesn't go Theresa May is currently completely powerless.

One question. If this is from a former FO person, why is behaviour spelt the American way? Or is this reported on an American website?

Of course, most of what they say is perfectly valid.

Absolutely this!

Why is she still in power?

It just shows the contempt the Tories hold us all in if THI utter shambles of a government is still ambling along, ruling from Labour's manifesto but cockin it up with Neolibetal lite versions of their policies, a powerless PM, and with nearly everyone in the Cabinet WILDLY unsuitable for their posts.

Priti NEEDS to go. If Mad May had more power, Johnson would go with her, but she knows the second she does that he does an Etonian Boy powergrab.

100% laugh.gif I'd love to see her actually give someone a "dressing down". She's so spineless and desperate to cling to power that she never takes any decisive stance.
