Jo Brand put the odious Quentin Letts firmly in his place on Have I Got News For You last night. Judging by his performance on the Today programme this morning, Tory MP Roger Gale is one of many who would benefit from watching it.

And the list of allegations of harassment and assault has increased over the past week, with Steven Segal, Louis CK, and now George Takai have been accused of sexually harassing women and men, and Kevin Spacey has been replaced by Christopher Plumber in an upcoming film due to be released in 6 weeks time. The rot is deep.

George takei firmly denies the allegation and is a campaigner for civil rights and against this sort of thing. Someone making allegations could have ulterior motives. The media and the public should not assume one person's story is true and another's is false - but that is where we are. Go to the police.
During the last batch of celebrity accusations many were not charged with anything. I suggest everyone read Paul gambaccini's book on the year out of his life and career. |

George Takei as well now? I hope that that incident didn't happen as it would be a true shock as someone I respect as an activist for good.
He himself has said that we shouldn't dismiss the accuser though, though he was going all in against the others prior to this. |

I'm not sure whether this is the right thread for this, but it didn't seem worth starting a new one...

Flirting is more or less harmless, as long as it stops as soon as the flirtee makes it clear they are not interested. If the person doing the flirting is in a position of power over their subject, even mild flirting is overstepping the mark. |

But the problem is, what might be considered harmless flirting by one person, could be considered harassment by another. |

But the problem is, what might be considered harmless flirting by one person, could be considered harassment by another. If flirting is harassment then it's a form of harassment that a lot of us never get aimed at us. At which point all of us poor troglodytes can sympathise entirely with poor poor dears unfortunate enough to be blessed with good looks who find flirting annoying, so other shallow people try it on with them and fail to see it as a sort of compliment, the poor souls forced to get all the best jobs that they don't want, or get work in modelling and entertainment. It's very easy to dress down, stop wearing make-up, get a bad hair do, and avoid all the flirting. That or wait for age to take it's course before leaving the house. Or just say "piss off". That's quite effective at making sure no-one wants to have anything to do with you. I may have mentioned my chat in a bar with an ageing model in her 40's who was bereft because she was starting to lose her top notch looks and thought life was no longer worth living if she had to face life like the rest of us. I tried to make her realise that 99.9% o the world manage quite well, but the vanity was quite difficult to overcome. |
