BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: SevenSeize 19th April 2020, 02:40 PM

On the singles chart, could it be a ninth week at #1 for The Weeknd, or will Michael Ball/Captain Tom Moore/Voices of Care Choir's cover of You'll Never Walk Alone hit the top spot? Sam Smith & Demi Lovato drop their new collab I'm Ready, and there's new tracks from Playboi Carti, Tiesto/Becky Hill, Joji and Jamie xx

Gerry Cinnamon looks set for a #1 debut with second album The Bonny. New releases include Enter Shikari's sixth LP Nothing Is True & Everything Is Possible, Fiona Apple's return after eight years with Fetch the Bolt Cutters, DaBaby's BLAME IT ON BABY, plus albums from Nafe Smallz, EOB, dvsn and Rina Sawayama

Breakdown of the week
- Saturday: Some information may be posted on social media but it is likely to be missing most streaming data and is unrepresentative.
- Sunday: Official First Look Chart on Radio 1 from 6-7pm. Please do not post spoilers on the forum in advance as this ruins the countdown for any listeners.
- Monday: OCC Top 100 from 5:45pm
- Tuesday: Top 40 update as and when we receive them with requests, this is NOT 100% guaranteed however. The OCC may publish sales flashes of their own accord but likewise, this is not guaranteed. Twitter and social media is your friend for today. Please post any information you find with a source. Do not nag for updates, we will post a top 40 update if we receive one.
- Wednesday: Top 40 update from Music Week from 5:45, and potential top 5 sales but this is not guaranteed.
- Thursday: See Tuesday.

Other notes (please read)
- You may make requests Tuesday to Thursday but outside the top 40, specific positions will not be revealed (unless deemed necessary by a mod).
- Please do not demand a midweek update, one will be posted as and when we receive the information. Patience is a virtue.
- Sales information will be given out as deemed necessary by a moderator, please bear this in mind when making requests. Most requests for sales will be ignored.
- To keep everyone in the loop of all chart action, please refer to the iTunes and Spotify threads.

YNWA has to be #1 this week. Can see Blinding Lights returning to #1 for a 4th time the week after.

Posted by: LMLou 19th April 2020, 03:23 PM

It's gonna be interesting to see how well Michael can hold up through the week. He'll obviously be #1 today and most of the start of the week, but if the hype dies down and streaming picks up they could loose it

Posted by: jimwatts 19th April 2020, 03:35 PM

I think the Big Night In on Thursday night will help them over the line.

Posted by: Mart!n 19th April 2020, 03:42 PM

I still think The Weeknd will get it in the end, The Big Night In is on from 8:05 to 10:00pm a couple of hours before the cut off point of midnight might not be enough.

Edit that... One World is on tonight, didn't realise, could swing it towards YNWA

Posted by: ___∆___ 19th April 2020, 03:49 PM

I think Michael & Captain Tom will get it - especially if they are #1 in the first set of mids then media will be all over it.

Posted by: Mack. 🐠 19th April 2020, 04:13 PM

How much of an effect could One World have in the charts this week?

Minimal tbh - most artists didn’t sing their own songs and some of the biggest acts were on very late meaning lots of people missed them.

Posted by: JosephStyles* 19th April 2020, 04:55 PM

5 mins to go!

Posted by: Gerald 19th April 2020, 04:59 PM

Rooting for the literal legend that is Captain Tom Moore this week! Hope he gets that #1!

20 Vera Lynn & Katherine Jenkins - We'll Meet Again
19 Little Mix - Break Up Song

Posted by: coi 19th April 2020, 05:02 PM

Vera Lynn was of course in the very first Official Chart in 1952, quite remarkable to see her in today's top 20 update!

Posted by: ___∆___ 19th April 2020, 05:03 PM

Vera Lynn Top 20 - we love to see it!

Posted by: Scene 19th April 2020, 05:03 PM

Little Mix are showing some staying power. ohmy.gif Hopefully it can repeak at some point although maybe that's a big ask.

Posted by: Gerald 19th April 2020, 05:04 PM

Yes @ Vera making it into the top 20 on the First Look chart. I would have liked a play of We'll Meet Again.

Break Up Song showing the staying power I predicted.

18 was Adore You

You don't have to like the song but the chances of it being a long-running hit are low. May as well give them this week as a sign of respect if nothing else.

Why would they be distraught? It's been a big hit. Perhaps not as big as they expected but nevertheless, still a hit. They won't be losing any sleep over its performance.

15 was Tones, 14 was Lil Mosey

But a #10 peak is hardly a disaster! That's the point I'm making. It's been a hit, Mabel's got a third consecutive top 10 hit (as a lead) from her album, there's nothing to be distraught over.

Theres something about why Youll Never Walk Alone is succesful every time a version is released.

I loved The Crowd version back in the 80s

Posted by: Breraldine 🐠 19th April 2020, 06:18 PM

Unless the list I found is out of date this will be only the 5th song to get to #1 in three or more different versions ('Do They Know It's Christmas?' and 'Unchained Melody' did it 4 times each and 'With A Little Help From My Friends' and 'Spirit In The Sky' 3 times each). Assuming it holds on of course (which it looks like it very likely will if it's on 36k sales already).

Who'd have ever seen Michael Ball racking up multiple #1 albums and even a potential #1 single in the past couple of years laugh.gif

'Three Lions' had 4 runs at #1 if you consider the 1998 run to be the same song as the 1996 run (the two versions have had their sales combined in the download/streaming era so that seems reasonable but I know they're counted in some sources as two different #1s so there is an asterisk attached).

This tbh laugh.gif I think chart fanatics forget it’s only us and stans of artists that actually care about the charts. Most people wouldn’t have a clue who is/isn’t in the charts and use guides such as the Spotify charts and Big Top 40 as their information source.

Probably not. But the “newsworthy” number 1s (like this one or something like 3 Lions) are probably good for small talk chit chat and therefore it’s no surprise media outlets would rather report a chart that’s more quick to react.

Eg “Did you hear that 3 Lions is number 1 in the [big top 40] chart?” when it’s actually at its most popular
is probably better than “Did you hear that 3 Lions may get to number 1 at the end of the week [ie midweek number 1]”
And is definitely better than “Did you hear that 3 Lions got to number 1 in the [official] charts today?” (almost a week after it’s peak sales, and it’s actual *moment* has passed)

Future Nostalgia singles really are like the sweetener era of 2020.

Album #1 but no number one singles yet they’ve all been huge hits.

I bet when she does next get a #1 single too it will be a with a track what’s good but less good than what missed out as well wink.gif

Can Michael Ball hold on to No 1 with no streams? Will be interesting to see how far ahead he is tomorrow. Based on last weeks numbers he's guaranteed Top 5 already but he needs LadBaby type numbers to be Number 1. What do people think his chances are?

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 19th April 2020, 10:02 PM

Certainly doing better than I expected on there.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 19th April 2020, 10:06 PM

I think they might just about go to #1 and possibly get an extra week top 40 as well.

It’s nice to see growth in pure sales though regardless of what the track is its nice to see there is still some of market for it.

Just the other day my mam was saying how he’ll be #1 and chart master me was giving it all but you don’t know how the chart works he won’t get playlist support and iTunes means nothing. Oops I was wrong x

I'm pretty certain I have never seen a 'media outlet' reporting on anything from the Big Top 40? I thought your point was about people posting stuff on Twitter or whatever.

edit: after Googling it there are a couple of outlets reporting on this being #1 in the Big Top 40 to be fair but I also do see just as many reporting that it's 'set to be #1', referring to the midweek chart, or just stories about it going to #1 on iTunes. The ones reporting it as just going to #1 as if this is the actual chart are largely trash sites like The Sun and Daily Mail which I stay away from so if this is something they do frequently I wouldn't be aware of it kink.gif

Posted by: ___∆___ 20th April 2020, 08:30 AM

^^ In fairness most media outlets have stated he’s #1 - some mentioning the Big Top 40 but others just outright claiming he has the top spot - ITN, Metro, Mirror, Daily Mail, The Sun, Express, and Daily Record. The only one stating he’s set to hit the top spot is the Evening Standard.

I guess the media don’t care at the moment though tbh, it’s makes a nice news story although it would be better if they were encouraging people to buy it rather than claiming victory.

I have a questions, do youtube streams count for chart positions?

Posted by: Slick 20th April 2020, 11:01 AM

The media (and artists themselves) repeatedly confuse/deliberately ignore the difference between The Big Top 40 and the Official Chart. I feel like it's a distinction only chart followers understand. I always see "so and so number 1 on charts", and I know (because I'm a geek) that they mean the Big Top 40. It's frustrating because we live in a world where people read a headline, take it as gospel and it becomes fact.

Posted by: Bjork 20th April 2020, 11:02 AM

^yes

While unofficial videos or other user-generated content will not count towards artist streams - official videos played on YouTube, Apple, Tidal and Spotify will.

The new rules will kick in on Friday 29 June, 2018 and have been approved by record labels and BBC Radio 1, which broadcasts the chart each Friday.

Wow, Enter Shikari have already beaten the first week sales of their last album - much, much better than I was expecting them to do, their sales are going to be extremely frontloaded obviously but given Dua only did 11.8k last week they look like they have a great chance of hanging onto #2. Anyone have any insight on how they might have managed this? (Looking to RabbitFurCoat as you seem to know a lot about artists like this with surprisingly good sales though I don't know if you're particularly a fan of Enter Shikari laugh.gif)

Pretty good sales for Gerry Cinnamon too of course, though I was expecting/hoping 'Where We're Going' to be a little higher at this stage, looking like it might still miss the top 40 now.

Great sales for Gerry, Radio 1 will have a field day if Gerry releases Canter as a single biggrin.gif just listening to it now.

Too many charity singles around at the moment, the No.1 its not that perfect, but in the light of what is happening in the world its quite fitting, It seems strange I'm sharing my birthday with Captain Tom Moore I feel so honorable to a war veteran. I just hope we don't have a new charity track every week, as I can see another new charity track is going to be released this Thursday a cover of the Foo Fighters track, I quite like the original.

what do you mean by "his star fell" - dance act never been a good album sellers and in recent times it's hard to get top 40 single with the music he's producing.

He is still a great house music producer I don't see any downgrade of quality of his music tbh.

Very happy with a potential 4th week in Top 20 for Little Mix again without any of the promotion they usually rely heavily on. Great to see them back on form - so rare for a pop group to achieve this after almost a decade in the game.

I genuinely think "Love Song" off of this album is the best thing he's ever done, and one of the best dance tracks of the past few years. He may not be able to have commercial success in the charts like he initially did but he's killing it in quality terms.

re: Duke Dumont - losing his relevance as a chart act was basically his own decision, he did an interview with Billboard recently where he basically says he lost his interest in getting chart hits and would rather just make whatever he wants to. he very easily could have taken the path of Jax Jones and kept getting smashes, especially after Ocean Drive which was a huge hit worldwide (500m+ YT, 250m+ Spotify).

From Music Week -

QUOTE
The Official Charts Company Midweek Sales Flash is in and we could be in line for new No.1s in both the singles and albums charts.

Gerry Cinnamon has sold almost 23,000 units of The Bonny (22,833 sales) already, and takes an early lead over Enter Shikari’s Nothing Is True & Everything Is Possible (9,509 sales) in the albums chart. Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia (3,266 sales), Lewis Capaldi’s Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent (2,800 sales) and EOB’s Earth (2,515 sales) complete the Top 5.

Michael Ball & Captain Tom Moore go straight in at No.1 in the singles chart with You’ll Never Walk Alone, released in celebration of the 99-year-old Captain’s fundraising achievements in support of the NHS. The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights (25,499 sales), Saint Jhn’s Roses (18,810 sales), Drake’s Toosie Slide (17,572 sales) and Beth Porch’s new entry You Taught Me What Love Is (14,242 sales) complete the Top 5.

Posted by: LMLou 20th April 2020, 06:20 PM

I think based on sales from 3 days, Michael and Tom will end up just break 80k after a last minute push later on In the week which should see them scrape the #1

Shame Ava isn’t higher than she was last week as it means she’ll likely just miss out again. A slightly better Spotify push could easily ensure this goes top 40

Posted by: dandy* 20th April 2020, 08:56 PM

It's on it. Apparently the vinyl has the extended version but the CD/download has the normal single mix.

And re my original star has fallen comment - I just meant in terms of going from a sure fire #1/#2 artist to not managing a top 40 album, in fact probably much much lower. It doesn't mean I don't like the music, I think the album's pretty decent... love the full version of Therapy and the last few tracks on the album, there isn't anything I feel the need to skip.

That is definitely just Kworb tagging it wrong, the Alfie version has barely any views on YouTube.

However the most viewed video of the Michael/Tom version is an auto-generated video which do not count (as far as anecdotal evidence suggests) to the video streaming chart - uncertain if they count as audio streams for some reason or if they're ignored entirely. It'll likely be only views from the audio and video versions on the DeccaRecordsMusic channel that count and even then that probably depends on the label having actually registered that with the OCC, the video streaming chart is very janky and often completely misses songs.

This isn't really relevant as the song will have pretty minimal sales contribution from YouTube and is heading to be #1 easily regardless just from its downloads though.

It would be great if he stays top 40 in the singles and also gets 30k in the albums. Im hoping the album will have good longevity and sell well, his debut should rack up a good few more sales in the months to come aswell.

Yeh 'Erratic Cinematic' is currently 35 in the mids!

According to OCC, the Weeknd is only 18k behind Captain Tom. The Weeknd can piss off trying to stop Captain Tom getting #1

Posted by: coi 22nd April 2020, 11:56 AM

The article is saying the gap's closed by about 9k then (to 18k now, Captain Tom on 60k apparently), part of that might be the missing streaming data for yesterday's update being added I guess.

The Weeknd should have withdrawn his music from all streaming and online music stores for Captain Tom!!!

Ugh! Have downloaded from iTunes but going to download from Amazon too - Michael/Captain Tom have to get the #1!

Captain Tom deserves his #1 for his 100th !

Posted by: Bjork 22nd April 2020, 12:21 PM

that doesn't make sense... they were on 58.7k yesterday, cannot be on 60K today, sure they did more than 1.3k on iTunes yesterday

-----

Captain Tom Moore's battle for this week's Official Number 1 single in the UK is heating up, with the gap between the Top 2 narrowing today (April 22).

According to the latest sales and streaming data compiled by the Official Charts Company, The Weeknd's Blinding Lights is catching up to Captain Tom Moore and Michael Ball's You'll Never Walk Alone, who still hold the lead with 60,000 chart sales accrued so far this week.

However, just over 18,000 chart sales now separate the two, compared to a gap of 27,000 yesterday (April 21). Captain Tom Moore leads the way on downloads, while The Weeknd proves himself a powerhouse on streaming. Can the 99 year-old war veteran and one-man fundraising machine fight off The Weeknd to claim victory on this Friday’s Official Singles Chart?

Posted by: ___∆___ 22nd April 2020, 12:24 PM

They had a lot of red and dark red Kworb updates yesterday so it’s possible I guess - also the general public seem to think it’s already #1 so hopefully the news that it’s not in the bag yet might get people downloading!

I just downloaded another from Amazon - I never usually download but it’s a good cause and it would be lovely to see him get the top spot.

Posted by: Bjork 22nd April 2020, 12:26 PM

yesterday they were doing 6 times more than The Weeknd on iTunes, should be at least 5K...
today they've really slowed down, now it's like 3 times more than The Weeknd, so just 2-3K today...

Posted by: coi 22nd April 2020, 12:29 PM

Less than 2k sales from yesterday does seem quite sudden if true considering how it's been doing so far this week!

It's not The Weeknd's fault to be honest, it's the people who are still buying and streaming that song that are to blame. I doubt The Weeknd cares much about the UK chart this week.

would be a bit of a shame if they fall at the last hurdle and end up missing #1 but I suspect they'll do a last minute push tomorrow with the knowledge that they're not as safe a #1 as they may have thought?

Damn those selfish people listening to whatever music they want...

If YNWA somehow doesn't get the 15-20k or so it needs from here to secure #1 (which I'm sure it will) the blame surely would lie with the media outlets who claimed it had already got there.

I don’t think it’ll even need that much, even 10k should be more than enough, if YNWA is on 60k and BL 18k behind (which would be 42k) with only two days to go I think they’re still the favourites here by some distance.

If the people who are buying/streaming Blinding Lights also want captain Tom to go to #1 they could have easily gone through this whole week without helping Blinding Lights challenge for this week's number one. My original point was that The Weeknd is not actively campaigning for #1 in the UK chart this week.

Is Sawayama top 100 yet? I noticed she was doing exclusive UK vinyls. Only 500 but I assume that would be enough to get her charting if people bought them. I was expecting a Top 40, shame if she even missed 100. Excellent album.

Posted by: Breraldine 🐠 22nd April 2020, 03:19 PM

Has Rina had any mainstream exposure beyond one song making the Radio 1 C-List? I'm not really sure where people were getting expectations for her to chart from, I get the sense she's pretty much entirely unknown outside certain Internet circles.

Maybe slightly surprising that she wasn't even top 100 in the mids from whatever fanbase she has but I definitely wouldn't have predicted her to be top 40.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 22nd April 2020, 03:22 PM

I had no idea who Rina was until I seen this thread but I’m gonna check the album out based on the strong reviews it’s had on here.

She might be someone who takes off after a televised performance somewhere though isn’t what got Christine & The Queens more exposure.

There are two other new entries in the Top 20: You Taught Me What Love Is (17,083 sales) by Beth Porch at No.11 and I'm Ready (12,821 sales) by Sam Smith & Demi Lovato at No.20.

She's never made the top 200 on Spotify with any song and most likely hasn't ever even come close to it judging by the fact her only charting song on Apple Music is at #875.

I wouldn't compare this to MNEK, his failing to even go top 100 was a lot more surprising considering he had had commercial success before that. I think Rina is in a similar boat to someone like Kim Petras who similarly seems like a pretty big artist if you look in the right places on the Internet but at the end of the day she just isn't widely known enough to actually make any chart impact. (Kim of course also an artist Radio 1 has picked up to give some minor support recently). Maybe this little bit of radio support will translate into them becoming more established names who are able to make a bit more noise chart-wise with their next releases.

I think the missing Amazon/Apple streams from yesterday's update are up to date again now, would explain the sudden boost for Blinding Lights (increasing by 11k in today's update after 6k in yesterday's update) and Ava Max returning to the midweek top 40, so I don't think Blinding Lights will continue to increase at the fast rate we had in today's update.

500 sales would make a huge impact most weeks especially when you consider last weeks #26 sold 2,486 and #70 sold 1,375 - literally every sale counts on the album charts as they are so close the lower you go.

But The Weeknd only gained so much today because the Apple and Amazon streams that were missing in yesterday’s update have been added now. For that reason I doubt Blinding Lights will continue to gain that quickly, see this post I made earlier:

Decca have sent out an email to their database - the first part of the email encourages people to watch the video on YouTube so they obviously know that will get them a few streaming sales, they also link the iTunes and Amazon downloads - some morning TV media coverage would help give it a final push tomorrow.

I think Rina has a good chance of continuing to be supported by R1 now she's on their radar (even if that's just repeatedly stalling on the C-List).

It def needs that last push, i will be really disappointed if the weeknd pips it at the lats minute.

The BBC are giving her some extra support today.

I hope so, but they always seem to drop artists as soon as I start liking them (I'm thinking specifically of Grace Carter here).

Posted by: Robbie 23rd April 2020, 09:20 AM

At a guess, sales today will be:

1: YNWA - 65k
2: BL - 52k

and if missing Wednesday streams were included in the midweeks, 'Blinding Lights' would be on 60k

but unfortunately when the Thursday sales / streams are included on Friday it will be:

1: BL: 71-73k
2: YNWA 67k

I hope I'm wrong though!

Posted by: coi 23rd April 2020, 09:22 AM

Radio 2's Breakfast Show encouraged listeners again to buy YNWA this morning, mentioning that it's a close fight for number one. They're clearly doing what they can to give it that last push!

Posted by: Bjork 23rd April 2020, 09:59 AM

Michael Ball is still doing the same as yesterday on iTunes, roughly 3 times more than Blinding Lights
so there has not been much effect if he's pushing for more sales

The data hasn't updated for the time since that push on the breakfast show though, so we'll have to wait and see if that has any influence.

There has been a HUGE boost for Captain Tom on iTunes in the latest update!

Posted by: Bjork 23rd April 2020, 11:20 AM

the occ are doing their bit to help too... the article says the difference today is "a few thousands"

Captain Tom Moore's race for Number 1 looks to be going right down to the wire as The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights is forecast to overtake the 99 year-old war veteran during the course of today, according to the Official Charts Company.

Downloads of You'll Never Walk Alone, Captain Tom’s duet with Michael Ball and The NHS Voices of Care Choir in aid of NHS Charities Together, have slowed down across the week, allowing The Weeknd's Blinding Lights to quickly catch up. While Captain Tom leads on this morning’s latest Official Charts sales flash, just a few thousand chart sales now separate the two songs.

The Weeknd’s reigning chart topper is proving a major powerhouse on streaming services, and with more streaming data to be added in at the end of the week, the Official Charts Company forecast this will tip the lead in favour of The Weeknd during the course of today. At this late stage of the week a Number 1 single is looking less likely for Captain Tom by the time tomorrow’s chart is published.

Downloads of You'll Never Walk Alone would need to accelerate significantly throughout today if it is still to be in with a chance of securing Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart for the 99 year-old war veteran’s 100th birthday.

The cut-off for sales and streams to count towards this week’s chart is midnight tonight. The final Official Chart Top 40 will be unveiled on BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart with Scott Mills this Friday from 4pm, with the full Official Singles Chart Top 100 published on OfficialCharts.com from 5.45pm.

Posted by: coi 23rd April 2020, 11:22 AM

They certainly are trying to help! Not often do they give a "forecast" on Thursday for who will be number one laugh.gif

I do wonder how much 'a few thousand' might be as well, I find it unlikely that BL suddenly closed the gap by around 15k if it only managed 11k yesterday with missing data added too thinking.gif

Posted by: Lee_J11 23rd April 2020, 11:51 AM

The download surge is back in full force so I wouldn’t worry tbh x

Posted by: Breraldine 🐠 23rd April 2020, 12:09 PM

That 'few thousand' is probably going to turn out to be like 10k+, they're just being overdramatic I reckon. x

In any case the final day boost for YNWA is coming through now (it was always bound to happen somehow even if that one Michael Ball tweet yesterday seemed to have nearly no effect) so it should very much still be safe.

Just noticed the title of that OCC article is 'The Weeknd now expected to dash Captain Tom Moore's Number 1 hopes' laugh.gif definitely overdramatic...

Posted by: ___∆___ 23rd April 2020, 12:16 PM

Nothing like the OCC to get a chart battle into action and those extra paid for sales. Zoe Ball has just tweeted about it telling people it’s close and to download.

Posted by: Bjork 23rd April 2020, 12:23 PM

pretty sure it's not that close today

it's also funny how the occ tells people to go download the NHS single, they know no one is streaming it

Posted by: Breraldine 🐠 23rd April 2020, 12:24 PM

Presumably they also know that Thursday streams don't actually count for anything... kink.gif

(not from the biggest streaming services anyway)

Posted by: Liam.k. 23rd April 2020, 12:27 PM

Also a stream isn't going to give anything to the charity and it's obviously easier to make up a chart sale by purchasing than it is to stream.

Posted by: ben08 23rd April 2020, 12:56 PM

According to LivePop the ratio is,
1:0.4849187935
So YNWA downloading is over twice The Weeknd.

LPB's numbers are probably wrong (their numbers are always different to Kworb now for some reason). The Weeknd is at 0.12 on Kworb and has never gone above 0.34 during the week.

It's possible that it could be Kworb that's wrong of course but I think their numbers seem more consistent with what the midweeks have said.

Posted by: coi 23rd April 2020, 01:59 PM

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's LPB that are wrong - Blinding Lights was on 0.61 and 0.62 all morning on LPB then suddenly dropped to 0.48 when it fell to #3, and the new #2 (Times Like These) is on 0.63 laugh.gif

You're misunderstanding how percentages work here tongue.gif Michael & Tom were beating The Weeknd by roughly 8 to 1 both before and after the current Kworb update, the difference between the actual numbers means nothing when both of them have been pushed back by the Live Lounge song racing ahead.
