With news today of Sky Sports having live exclusive rights to The Open Golf Championship from 2017 and the BBC losing their rights to show it live.

It's got me wondering which sporting events should remain broadcast live on free-to-air TV?

According to the Ofcom Code on Sports and Other Listed and Designated Events.

These are the events that should be live on free-to-air TV only:

FIFA World Cup
UEFA European Championship
FA Cup Final
Scottish Cup Final
Grand National
The Derby
Rugby League Challenge Cup Final
Rugby World Cup Final
Wimbledon
Olympic Games (Summer and Winter)
Paralympic Games (Summer and Winter)

These are the events that can be shown on pay-per-view TV but free-to-air TV should provide full highlights/delayed coverage:

World Athletics Championships
England Test Cricket Matches
Cricket World Cup
The Open
Ryder Cup
Commonwealth Games
Invictus Games

So what do you think about this?

I think the Ryder Cup & The Ashes should be on free-to-air TV.

However some events are protected by the Government aren't they? Although they're always changing their minds.

Sky have been in interested in the World Cup/Euros before - I swear the UK is one of the only countries where the whole tournament is free-to-air.

I agree with the free to air sports and I reckon the Athletics World Championships should also be.

I'd personally like to see the BBC stop buying Formula 1 altogether. It clogs up the schedules something chronic when they have it. If they do have it, then the practice and qualifying rounds should be red button only and they should only show it once live at the time it happens - no showing the whole race again live later on.

I think the World Athletics Championship should always free-to-air.

We shall see what happens in 2018 whether the BBC pull out of Formula One altogether or not.

Yes definitely the Commonwealth Games should remain on free-to-air especially after the success of last year's in Glasgow.

No news on the broadcaster for the 2018 Commonwealth Games yet.

As most of you might have heard Sky and BT have paid £5.14 billion pounds for the rights to show Premier League football with Sky retaining five of the seven live packages paying over £4 billion for them and BT paying £960 million of the other two live packages.

Yep it's bonkers! I don't think the figure really matters that much, what's worse is that I don't expect any of that will be invested in fairer ticket prices, or in grassroots. Madness.

I don't think they have announced anything yet, but the assumption is that they will be charging. In the meantime, Sky Sports have increased their charges despite losing Champions League football.

No news on whether BT will be charging. Although they will broadcast the final of both the Champions League and Europa League and one match per season involving each British team on free-to-air.

From next season,

Channel 5 will be showing the Football League highlights in a prime-time slot at 9pm on a Saturday night which also contain highlights of the Capital One Cup and the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

What do you reckon to the new Football League highlights deal and the time slot?

It's certainly a better time-slot. Where possible, I will probably record it and start watching at about 9.30. Then I can skip the ads and be ready in time for MOTD.

British Eurosport will be showing all of the athletics Diamond League events live from next year in a five-year deal excluding the UK events (Birmingham) and the (Anniversary Games) which will be shown live on BBC. And the BBC will show highlights of all 12 events for the next two years.

Free-to-air TV in Russia (mostly Eurosport and Eurosport 2):

Most major sport events, include :
FIFA World Cup
UEFA European Championship
Olympic Games (Summer and Winter)
Formula 1
3 Tennis Grand Slams (exclude Wimbledon)
Winter World Cups (Ski Jumping, Cross-country, Biathlon, Alpine Ski, Nordic Combined, Luge)
Figure Skating (Grand Prix, World and European championships)
All three main cycling tours
World and European Athletics Championships
World and European Aquatic Championships
20 / 20 Cricket World Cup and Champions League
World and European Curling Championships
Ice Hockey World Championship
Weightlifting World and European Championships
+ maybe I forgot about any sport events.

Wish :
Rugby World Cup (we have it in 2003, 2007, 2011, but Russia is not a participant in 2015, so it's 99 % No)
From winter sports : Bobsleigh and Skeleton World Cups (some years ago we have them), Speed Skating World Cup (only one winter World Cup with zero TV airplay in Russia)
From summer sports : Athletics Diamond League

Also I want to see Commonwealth Games (but it's impossible in Russia) and Rugby Six Nations again (I still remember 3 wonderful years with this competion, when rugby had a very good airplay on Russia Sport)
