BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: JosephStyles 11th November 2017, 11:45 AM

Camila Cabello has stiff competition this week, as Eminem's comeback single Walk On Water, featuring Beyoncé, is giving it a run for its money. Can it go all the way though? ohmy.gif Keep an eye out for other new releases from Jason Derulo, Fuse ODG, and this year's John Lewis single by Elbow. Keep an eye out on X Factor boosts for Paloma Faith and Harry Styles too!

Taylor Swift should dethrone Sam Smith this week, despite his BBC special, with her new album reputation. It'll be her third UK #1 album in a row if it makes it next Friday! Other new releases come from Bradley Walsh, Elton John, Seal and several others.

Taylor 46k at #1, Sam Smith on 8k at #3

Posted by: BrookeOlivia 11th November 2017, 11:50 AM

Taylor must be shook at what that BBC special boost did for Sam that everyones been saying would hold her off #1 laugh.gif

Posted by: Bjork 11th November 2017, 11:50 AM

pretty good for taylor, guess she'll do >100k then

Posted by: SKOB 11th November 2017, 11:53 AM

Sam's first day 35k -> 97k by the end of week
Taylor 46k -> Maybe 105k or so?

Posted by: Bjork 11th November 2017, 11:54 AM

was thinking that probably taylor is gonna be more frontloaded, she has the hardcore fans that sam smith doesn't

Posted by: John-James 11th November 2017, 11:57 AM

1989 sold about the same and ended up with 90k. I think reputation will be a little but more frontloaded so I think around 80k is more likely.

Posted by: T Boy 11th November 2017, 11:59 AM

I wish I was living in a world where the Corrs could still get a no.1 album.

Posted by: Brébino 11th November 2017, 12:05 PM

So it looks like that TV special didn't really help Sam's album sales much at all then? laugh.gif Not complaining or anything but continuing to be pretty shocked at how much this album is underperforming. Do we know what is at #2 ahead of it right now? Did it fall behind Roy Orbison already or is it another one of the new releases?

Slightly better first day sales than I'd have predicted for Taylor, she stands some chance of matching the opening of '1989' then maybe (although the lack of first week streaming sales is not going to help her with that).

Posted by: Mart!n 11th November 2017, 12:15 PM

Wow... didn't expect opening sales of 45k, I expect her album will do well over the weekend sales wise, should sell pretty well with the run up to Xmas, might just break into 6 figures by the end of the week.

Shed Seven ahead of Sam Smith laugh.gif I should imagine Sam Smith will edge back to #2 later in the week though

Shed Seven ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

16 years is a long time for their fans to wait for new material...

In some ways this week in the Album chart is a week for Artists that haven't been prolific in recent years (As well as Shed Seven, Evanescence have gone 6 years since last Studio Album, The Corrs released an Album 2 years ago but before that they went 10 years between Albums and Tears For Fears' fans have been deprived of new material for too long - admittedly only 2 new songs on their compilation). A little surprised Evanescence aren't at #2 so far.
Personal hope is Tears For Fears can make it Top 10 this week.

Sam Smith had massive promo last Thursday which boosted his sales. I think Taylor will end up roughly the same or slightly lower than Sam in the end. 90-100k, but I'm leaning towards 90k.

Posted by: Bjork 11th November 2017, 01:09 PM

unbelievable that shed seven are at #2

Posted by: danVember 11th November 2017, 01:22 PM

I still can't see Taylor doing 100k. She will be very frontloaded, probably looking at 80-90k for the week I think.

Never heard of Shed Seven before Chris Moyles played their new single on his breakfast show and went on about how great they are, I suppose they're just doing well from the fans waiting so long anyway. I didn't think the song was all that.

Posted by: Bjork 11th November 2017, 01:26 PM

shed seven never were that famous, typical indie with album debuting low top 10 on week 1, then out of the top 40 the next week
just checked their discography on wiki and it's not that amazing

Change giver #16 (1994)
A Maximum high #8 (1996)
Let it ride #9 (1998)
Going for Gold-Best #7 (1999)
truth be told #42 (2001)

Posted by: Lomadz 11th November 2017, 01:29 PM

Cant believe I was worried about Taylors success. The reviews are great and the fans love it. Some of the haters will hate either way.

She is going to have another massive era, potentially as big as 1989.

Amazing number for Taylor.

Never said I wasn't a fan, I will surely give the Album a listen. I acknowdge it is a personal view but I don't always appreciate the themes in her lyrics, prefer if she moved on a bit and there was more of a happier positive tone.

If Taylor Swift wrote as many songs about each of her exes as Adele has written about one man, she'd be able to release an album each year for the next few decades laugh.gif

Posted by: Jonjo 12th November 2017, 07:36 AM

Also, I think people's main issue with Taylor writing about her exes are the lyrics. They're quite immature in comparison to the likes of everyone else.

Although not quite as bad as what Taylor gets, I remember there being a similar sort of backlash for Ed with 'Don't' for example

Posted by: SKOB 12th November 2017, 08:41 AM

Wow Evanescence are still around?

My problem with Taylor Swift is not songs about her exes, it's the inability of self-criticism and to see the world around her, she's not a spoiled teen anymore, but I guess the new album is softening that a bit.

Posted by: Bjork 12th November 2017, 08:47 AM

in the past Taylor had great songs about her ex that had great melodies and genious lyrics, and it was something new
now it sounds forced, like you know in advance what all sogs are gonna be about, so there's something fake about it,
while before the lyrics were natural and pretty realistic and even relatable
plus the genious lyrics are gone, zero so far that I've heard
while there were so many genious moments in the last 2 albums
blank space ("got a long list of ex-lovers, they'll tell you I'm insane, but I've got a blank space baby, and I'll write your name"), the whole shake it off ("I go on too many dates, but I can't make them stay"), I know you were trouble ("That you never loved me or her, or anyone, or anything"),
the whole We are never ( remember when we broke up, the first time...we hadn't seen each other in a month, when you said you needed space,What?")

now there are no genious lyrics + the music is basic and lacks melodies and hooks

amazed she's still selling well, good for her if she still can sell despite the drop in quality

Posted by: SKOB 12th November 2017, 08:54 AM

Blank Space is totally amazing, the lyrics are actually fantastic there. However, she used to write full albums aboit the same topic. That's just quite a lot.

Posted by: Bjork 12th November 2017, 12:12 PM

minty just twitted this

Swifto is selling about 20% faster than Sam Smith last week in the UK so will probably top 100k. #stats

Posted by: Lomadz 12th November 2017, 12:58 PM

Was worried about the fact thay she released the lead ao early with yhe 3 songs followong but the album is literally full of hits so she can keep this album going for a while.

Posted by: SKOB 12th November 2017, 01:19 PM

WHat does that 20% more even mean? 20% more on a daily basis (great) or overall (she already was that much ahead)

Posted by: Bjork 12th November 2017, 01:27 PM

i read it as 20% more than sam smith at the same point last week (sun mids), was he on 48K at this point? that would put taylor at ca. 58K (I think)

Posted by: SKOB 12th November 2017, 01:32 PM

If 58k, that's not very good second day for Taylor, 12k... it will drop to under 8k/daily fairly soon. 100k is still possible.

Posted by: UltraReputation 12th November 2017, 01:33 PM

58k would be the exact same increase as 1989 so I'd take that!

Posted by: 777666jason 12th November 2017, 03:46 PM

I'm surprised Sam's Thursday show hasn't done much really to boost his sales (yes OK 4 hours sale would have counted to last week)

Posted by: Jez 12th November 2017, 04:33 PM

if Taylor Swift is at 58k after two day sales then her sales have dipped by 74% which shows that it is pretty much frontloaded.

Nonetheless, it will most probably clear 100k, even if it averages 8k-9k per day.

Posted by: BrookeOlivia 12th November 2017, 04:34 PM

I’ll say 83K for Taylor, seeing as she’s very frontloaded.

Posted by: TomJ1991 12th November 2017, 05:21 PM

They should release a Nick Knowles Happy Meal toy.

Posted by: Supercell 12th November 2017, 05:41 PM

Maybe Taylor may end up doing better than I originally thought this week. Seems she's taking the Adele route by not releasing it straight to Spotify. Quite surprised at how Sams sales seem to have collapsed I thought he would have had a bit more consistency.

Gradually beginning to like Rita's new one, can actually see this being a potential contender for xmas no.1 in a few weeks.

Taylor making all the tracks "album only" apart from the singles is probably helping her with sales, the only people can get the duet with Ed Sheeran is buying the album

Posted by: 777666jason 12th November 2017, 06:43 PM

I know it probably sold a few extra copies due to an ed collab but I don't
Think that's the main reason people are buying it laugh.gif

Posted by: cqmerqn 12th November 2017, 06:52 PM

I’d say they’re album only because they want everyone to buy End Game all at once, to maximise impact.

Posted by: Bjork 12th November 2017, 09:12 PM

they're album-only in order to maximize album sales and sell more, especially in the US, which is their #1 priority
just shows how powerful taylor is that she can make itunes bend the knee and not allow cherrypicking,
when cherrypicking has always been itunes #1 policy

This isn't the first instance of a whole album being album-only, Beyoncé did a similar thing at first with her self-titled album for a week or so iirc. It's not bending the rules or going against "policy", it's just a record label decision. You're right in that it's to maximise album sales but I don't think it's down to Taylor's power making iTunes change their policy - more an executive decision that the record label can willingly make.

Posted by: Lenny 12th November 2017, 11:39 PM

I think it's a great way to encourage purchasing the full album. Although without a streaming option we'd likely just see piracy rise again.

Posted by: Envoirment 12th November 2017, 11:51 PM

The whole album-only thing is dependent on the labels/artists. There's many instances of songs being album-only on iTunes from over the years.

65k for Taylor now, 25k for Sam.

Looks like Rita will be #2

Taylor could still make 100k if she averages 8.75k a day. Yesterday was a Sunday so I could see her doing more than 7k today

THIS

If Sam Smith hadn't underperformed last week he would have challenged for #1 this week!!!

You could say that for just about anything! tongue.gif If Ed Sheeran's sales were still as strong as his debut week, he would be challenging for #1 ohmy.gif

Posted by: Jez 13th November 2017, 04:42 PM

So sales have slowed down even further for Taylor Swift around 42% down on its previous day.

Her album will need to pick up slightly during the remaining week for it to hit 100k+

I Think she might miss out tbh, depending on whether she has any promo this week?

Who would have thought Taylor beating Sam Smith to #1 in week 2, great sales for Taylor, I think she could just come under 100k in the end. I wish Evanescence was a lot higher

Rita Ora needs a big surge from somewhere to dethrone Camila.

Posted by: gooddelta 13th November 2017, 06:07 PM

Argh, annoying position for The Corrs, considering White Light lost out on a top 10 position by a handful of sales I was hoping this would manage it (despite not being as good an album) but I'm sure it will teeter into the 11-20 region pretty quickly.

I think if they are cherry picked from the album, streams do not count, that's how I'm reading into it.

Posted by: JosephStyles 13th November 2017, 07:07 PM

Technically those four songs aren't tagged to an album on streaming sites, so it won't count I guess.

QUOTE(JosephStyles @ Nov 13 2017, 08:07 PM) *

Yup, this. For streams to count towards an album sale there has to be a minimum of 8 tracks available to stream from the album. If the regular version of the album consists of less than 8 tracks then there is a minimum requirement of 5 tracks to count as an album and all tracks must register at least one stream. Taylor loses out on just having 4 tracks available to stream - she needs to make another 4 tracks available to attract streaming sales for her album.

Posted by: SKOB 13th November 2017, 08:22 PM

There's no album called Reputation on streaming services yet so of course there are no streams either.

I am totally with this. It was frustrating to see White Light miss the top 10 with only a few sales to be beaten by the Vamps album which sold less than half of the overall sales of the Corrs. I can see the Corrs once again missing the top 10 pirate.gif

Steps are falling hard, likely to be out of the top 60 when the chart is revealed on Friday.

Shane Ritchies album is starting poorly, i am sure he was hoping to repeat the success of Bradley Walshe last year.

It's been happening for about 70 years so I think we can safely rule out the notion it's a passing fad.

I'd like to know where P!nk is too. Hopefully she's managed to climb back into the top 10 with Carpool Karaoke/"Beautiful Trauma" gaining in airplay and some new entries falling.

Sam Smith's second week looks decent; should do 40-45k. Will be interesting to see how it does this xmas period - it's certainly doing a lot less than I thought but looks to be a strong seller still.
