BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Record Of The Decade 16 - Results!

Posted by: Iz~ 3rd September 2016, 10:25 PM

The results thread has come a little later than in previous years, mainly because I want to a) streamline the whole process and b) I delayed the conclusion of this thing by a few weeks so I could do it when I would be freer. At time of writing, the Final is still open, http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=193269 if you haven't already. Thanks again to everyone who's voted, I love you, you're very cool people.

A reminder of the previous winners and runners-up of this thing:

2006: Natalie Imbruglia - Torn / Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out Of My Head
2007: No Doubt - Don't Speak / Natalie Imbruglia - Torn
2008: Britney Spears - Toxic / Nelly Furtado - Say It Right
2009: Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love / Rihanna (feat. Jay-Z) - Umbrella

2014: Lady Gaga - Bad Romance / Britney Spears - Toxic
2015: Robyn & Kleerup - With Every Heartbeat / Rihanna - We Found Love (feat. Calvin Harris)

Now, it's late and I'm mainly opening this up to remind me to start posting in it from tomorrow onwards, so feel free to speculate away at what will be going on, or just ignore this thread until the interesting stuff gets posted. UP TO YOU.

It's crazy seeing there was a year when Leona Lewis was genuinely super-popular and at the top of her game given where things have gone since. Also that's so recent! It seems a million miles away from where pop is at now...

2006

As there will be no more rounds of 2006 in future versions of this game, here's a post looking back at the history of the popular songs of that year in ROTD. Basically, it's a load of chart runs detailing the results of every game from Thisispop's second running of this back in 2007 to the present day. I believe for 2007's round he chose the final songs but otherwise these songs all made it here through merit. They're ordered by their finish in the last final they took part in.

Interestingly, we have had four total winners in 2006, something that's a bit more than normal for these years. Nelly Furtado's Maneater threatened to make it a monopoly, winning 6 times in the first 7 years and never finishing out of the top 4. Something Kinda Ooooh briefly broke the Maneater stranglehold in 2009 but has been fairly up and down otherwise. Who Knew topped off its wanderings around the top 10 with a win in 2014 and the final two incarnations of 2006 have been won by Shakira's ever dominating Hips Don't Lie.

You can see a few songs that have grown in popularity, Welcome To The Black Parade and Everytime We Touch finishing on a peak, and a few wanings, like Chasing Cars going from solid top 5 finisher to something quite a bit lower or Promiscuous steadily finishing worse and worse. But obviously the big one is Set The Fire To The Third Bar which after missing out for a few editions was a solid top 15 finisher for a while and even top 5 material before falling off a cliff in the last 3 years.

Down the bottom there's curios such as Kasabian's Empire, Massive Attack's Live With Me and Raconteurs' Steady As She Goes managing to all pleasingly snag at least one go in the final, even if they didn't do very well.

It's always shocking and fascinating to see which songs randomly fell off a cliff since last year. For two of those to be Florence + The Machine is very peculiar, 'All Of The Lights' is great but I'm surprised it got anywhere near #20 in the first place. And 'All Fired Up' among others of course fall victim to the Sats fanbase suddenly vanishing.

But so far nothing looks more impressive than 'Really Don't Care' landing in 569th two years in a row!

191 161 2010 Tinie Tempah - Pass Out 202 34 5.941 ( 123 - 83 - 128 - 198 - 161 - 191 )

195 395 2011 Florence & The Machine - What The Water Gave Me 194 33 5.879 ( X - X - X - 395 - 195 )
196 104 2012 Nicki Minaj - Starships 223 38 5.868 ( 146 - 105 - 104 - 196 )
197 NE 2015 Nick Jonas - Jealous 216 37 5.838 ( 197 )

199 NE 2015 Hozier - Take Me To Church 216 37 5.838 ( 199 )
200 250 2014 Lorde - Team 221 38 5.816 ( 250 - 200 )

The first 10 of the top 200 opens with a rather large amount of new entries that have almost all reached a new peak here, so that's really cool. Of course, four of them being 2015 songs, that is inevitable and we have three of that year's biggest hits that are probably all still suffering from a little bit of overplay... and Style, which gets rave reviews and I've never really been able to figure out why, it's quite a blank space of a track for me. basil.gif Nick Jonas is actually stuck on the same score as his nemesis but through my great ordering system (apparently reverse alphabetical on this tie magic.gif ) he manages to beat her. I break ties when it's important, guys. Though perhaps this one is.

The other new entry is Paramore's Ignorance, getting a great first go in the yearly final, making it all the way to the top 200. That is something I'm still quite in awe of, but Paramore have had their fanbase growing here and hopefully that's here to stay.

A first entry to the top 200 comes from Bang Bang Bang which got a good first position last year and built upon that this year, and Lorde's Team which despite not being as huge a hit as it deserves, manages to remain well-regarded here and climbs a neat 50 places to round off the top 200. And What The Water Gave Me, one of Florence's loveliest singles also neatly climbs 200 places, to #195, a rare good result for Florence in a year that's otherwise been quite hard on her.

Starships and Pass Out are the two fallers, both have been always in the top 200 but never this low, maybe they won't be here next year?

Avicii painfully close to the top 200 sad.gif it's got to happen for him next year surely? Levels is too good of a song to just keep missing out.

Posted by: RobBob 5th September 2016, 07:49 PM

Some baffling falls there, not sure how a song goes from being a top 20 to outside the top 200! A pretty bad year for Katy in terms of falls, Roar and California Gurls really bombed sad.gif

Starships should be higher but at least it hasn't suffered an embarassing fall.

'Style' heart.gif A real favourite from Taylor and such a perfectly produced song.

Coldplay had a pretty bad year last time as far as ROTD goes, but this year they've pretty much made it their own and with the strength of two fantastic songs (or not, as your taste goes) that wouldn't go away at the beginning of this year, Every Teardrop - the first catalogue song on their tour for me <3 - leaps up out of the 300 region it's normally in and gets a huge new peak. Aside from the two 2015 songs, it's the only one in this section.

Now one of those 2015 songs is Tove Lo's Talking Body. And, with a score of exactly 6, it manages to come in just ahead of her debut hit. Now that's a bit weird for me. I like Talking Body well enough but it never stood out to me on Queen Of The Clouds like other songs did and is not Tove's best by a long shot. Yet according to ROTD it now is. The unusual hit that was Stay High is on the contrary one of her best and one I'd hope would rise this year rather than fall ten places. Now that's basically the same position so it probably doesn't mean much but... we'll see next year.

The other is One Last Time, continuing Ariana's trend of having nearly all her songs do well in ROTD. It moves just ahead of 'pop perfection' (Joseph, any year you care to mention) track Something New as that one falls out of the top 100. It'll probably be back in next year, internet gays can never ignore GA for long and soon enough this'll be their only representation (that matters).

After three years in the 260s, Hot Chip is now back to the top 200, as is Buttons, which has had rather more of a volatile history. 4 Minutes and I Will Never Let You Down fall from highs in the top 150 last time to just a bit below, and Sex On Fire continues its near inexhaustible run of popularity that no longer seems to be suffering from the continuous overplay it's constantly subjected to whenever anyone puts on an indie playlist at a social gathering. In fact, it's climbing, I don't want to jinx it but Mr Brightside only got more popular towards the end of its ROTD run...

171 NE 2010 Plan B - She Said 209 34 6.147 ( X - X - X - X - X - 171 )
172 139 2013 Lady Gaga (feat. R Kelly) - Do What U Want 227 37 6.135 ( 122 - 139 - 172 )

179 105 2014 Lilly Wood And The Prick - Prayer In C(Robin Schulz Remix) 230 38 6.053 ( 105 - 179 )
180 70 2012 Rudimental - Feel The Love 230 38 6.053 ( 37 - 47 - 70 - 180 )

Two new entries here from songs getting an overdue first appearance in their finals, and they've both done so well that they debut in the top 200. I don't know why it took so long for soul-pop classic She Said and dubstep wonder Guilt to be acknowledged but they're here now, and hopefully to stay.

Something else that's always pleasing to see is songs on their last year getting a new peak and that's the success of Breakaway overcoming the lack of other Breakaway songs to vault upwards, along with the (always somewhat surprising) success of Justice's We Are Your Friends, coming back into the top 200 for the first time to go out on a high.

Drake has had a great year as often happens with stars experiencing big real-world success at the time of competition, more of their fans on here is what I always guess at. Hold On We're Going Home climbs into the top 200 for the first time too. His best song for me still (I feel obliged to say that as I too often dislike him and next year will probably see certain songs of his doing rather well again).

Drops for Rudimental, out of the top 100 for the first time sadly, Prayer In C, falling from its fairly good debut along with the song that finished behind it now just ahead in Katy On A Mission, and we have Marina & The Diamonds and Lady Gaga slowly declining (one of the few songs she has with this year I believe). This is actually Marina's highest song, she's been way underrated this year and that's something that had better not stick although I totally understand why, it's been so long since she had a hit that she might even be fading from Buzzjack memory...

170 446 2006 Justin Timberlake (feat. TI) - My Love 283 46 6.152 ( X - X - X - X - X - X - 110 - 277 - 446 - 170 )

Some songs in this game do see a steady decline as the years go past and the song ages a bit poorly, or becomes less of an important standout as it was at the time. Of course the proper answer is that 2011 results this year were quite weird and may snapback next year but it does see Someone Like You slip to its lowest position yet after once getting a top 10 out of this. It's joined in huge falls with Little Mix's DNA no longer being one of LM's top 2 here and Kelis' Acapella slowly slipping.

I Kissed A Girl has fallen too but that's slightly different as last year was an unusual high point for it, maybe that one has aged well, not that I'd agree. But it only slips 15 places and so relatively holds rather steady, despite not getting to the semi-finals this time. Similarly, Kelly Rowland's Work sees its second year in the top 200 ever, except it's moved even higher this time, maybe even a round further one of these years.

U + Ur Hand is one of P!nk's greatest but has had several different results over the course of the ten years it's been here. It finishes at one of the more middling positions, but goes out with 3 top 100 positions scalped. Justin Timberlake's My Love only really came into this in the last 4 years and has even then run the gamut of ups and downs but it finishes here on a much better position than that low #446 it was last time.

A new strong entry for Sia's big hit adopted from the Hunger Games soundtrack Elastic Heart, debuting in ROTD two years later than its original release date would suggest, and Mumford & Sons sees the top 200 for the first time and it isn't Little Lion Man, which has always hung around the 300s, but The Cave which only came into the yearly finals last year. The Cave is my favourite Mumfords track and has been a fave for a long time so I fully support this climb, may it go even higher.

160 507 2014 Oliver Heldens & Becky Hill - Gecko (Overdrive) 240 38 6.316 ( 507 - 160 )

Last section before the semi-finals, so all the tracks that just missed out on going a little bit further by not finishing in the top 15 of their year. Because of my counting system and the differing situations of the rounds, where 2006 got way more voters than any other round, this means that three 2006 songs are right towards the top of that list. All with different pasts. She Moves In Her Own Way was a shock entry to the top 100 two years ago although wasn't in the final, and for the past two years has finished just outside making the cutoff point for the next round, great song though. Something Kinda Oooooh was once a kingpin of Girls Aloud tracks and for most of its entries was in the top 100, only once just slipping outside the top 200. It doesn't exactly finish on a high but finishing on a score of exactly 6.5 is pretty cool, right. The final 2006 song, LDN has a new peak, an improvement of just two places on two years ago but that's pretty good, it was doing excellently in its yearly round and I thought it'd go further.

We have strong first top 200 entries for 2013 tracks Can't Hold Us and Royals, the latter leaping up from the 500s, as did one of my dance nemeses of the last few years, hello Mr Heldens. I wonder where you'll go from here. Some rather less interesting falls greet On The Floor, Be Mine and Use Somebody, while one of the 2015 tracks I was hoping most would make it further, the wonderful debut hit of tropical house king Kygo, falls just short because of a tie, damn Jess Glynne didn't deserve it again.

141 NE 2015 Calvin Harris & Disciples - How Deep Is Your Love 125 42 2.976 ( - 141 )

145 259 2010 Rihanna - Rude Boy 114 42 2.714 ( 298 - 448 - X - X - 259 - 144 )
146 NE 2015 Fleur East - Sax 105 42 2.500 ( - 145 )
147 118 2006 Cascada - Everytime We Touch 105 42 2.500 ( X - X - X - 125 - 152 - 263 - 213 - 143 - 118 - 146 )
148 274 2007 Justin Timberlake - What Goes Around... Comes Around 90 42 2.143 ( X - X - X - X - X - 151 - 375 - 274 - 147 )
149 108 2006 Nelly Furtado - All Good Things (Come To An End) 84 42 2.000 ( X - 27 - 73 - 166 - 168 - 50 - 79 - 199 - 108 - 149 )
150 315 2010 B.o.B (feat. Hayley Williams) - Airplanes 84 42 2.000 ( 271 - 459 - 312 - X - 315 - 150 )

Unlike that other section, 2006 tracks seemed to get underrated in the semi-final, so again we have a whole glut of them, and with Rehab and All Good Things finishing on relative lows after having had numerous top 50 finishes before that seems a little underwhelming for those. The last one, Everytime We Touch though has a bit of a claim to be this high, I'd have loved it higher as it is a major part of my memory of 2006, but seeing it only slip just a bit from its peak last year is a pretty good out.

2010 big hitters from big Buzzjack faves Kylie and Gaga slip but Rude Boy gets into the top 200 for the first time - which is very surprising to me, I was sure that was one that people would have been all over before, but it looks like it wasn't even good enough to be in the 2010 final for two years. Airplanes is the dead-last finisher (along with Nelly) in the semi-final but this still represents its clear best performance now, I never thought a rap track like that would be quite so loved but maybe Hayley helped as she's helped most of her own songs around here.

Only two other years here, a Justin Timberlake song, but this time What Goes Around... gets a peak even higher than the First Great Timberlake Invasion of ROTD, by four places on its 2013 result. And just two places ahead, Fleur East makes a very reasonable debut for a latter-day X Factor alumnus, mainly because she did very well in turning one of the biggest and most popular songs of that year into a Buzzjack-friendly anthem. It's joined on its debut by the big summer hit of Calvin Harris' How Deep Is Your Love, something that's pretty much Calvin Harris in a nutshell but some people love it.

136 148 2006 Madonna - Sorry 129 42 3.071 ( 118 - X - X - X - 158 - 257 - 225 - 327 - 148 - 136 )
137 57 2010 Hurts - Wonderful Life 129 42 3.071 ( X - 42 - 174 - 135 - 57 - 137 )
138 142 2014 Charli XCX - Boom Clap 129 42 3.071 ( 142 - 138 )

140 457 2010 Ellie Goulding - The Writer 125 42 2.976 ( X - 379 - X - 338 - 457 - 140 )

Ellie Goulding is the artist I'd nominate this year for really seeing a huge boost and that can be demonstrated from the huge jump The Writer has had this year, I can scarcely believe a lovely and emotional but otherwise unremarkable song when her whole discography is looked at could be so high and it was one of the ones that the semi-final claimed but this is a much better performance than ever before. Similar stories although less extreme for an Example #1 and most loved song on here, and Paloma Faith's big radio hit from a couple of years ago.

It's a peak for Stereo Love too, something that's slowly been growing in popularity, which is unusual as it does feel like a song confined to its time but I'm just going to put it down to it being brilliant and being a perfectly preserved time capsule of 2010. I always wonder why dance songs don't do as well in ROTD, if we had more dance fans I think Stereo Love has the potential to reach the final if not more. One dance song that hasn't quite reached the final but has always been around the edge (2014 and before the final only held 60) is Spectrum, which has a VASTLY SUPERIOR original version but thanks to a dance remix managed to be one of our greatest and unexpected #1s. So that's that.

It's goodbye to Chasing Cars, twice top 10 at the start of this although it has had very mixed fortunes since then, and Madonna's Sorry, peaking in its first year but manages to go out at its second highest position ever, which is a very good last hurrah for the old dear, I doubt she'll ever be quite this high again, 4 Minutes and future singles are really not as popular.

Boom Clap shifts up a bit and Wonderful Life falls 80 places from last year to a rather middling result for it, it's a song I've always enjoyed seeing do well here as Hurts weren't even that big yet Wonderful Life has remained very loved on here quite consistently.

128 201 2009 AR Rahman & Pussycat Dolls - Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny) 145 42 3.452 ( 157 - 457 - 332 - 219 - 180 - 201 - 128 )

130 444 2013 Rihanna (feat. Mikky Ekko) - Stay 143 42 3.405 ( 310 - 444 - 130 )

It's a peak and the furthest notable Pussycat Dolls collab Jai Ho has ever made by quite a way, I didn't think it'd get anywhere near the semi-finals but it made it fairly far within those. Similarly for Stay which really outperformed what I'd previously seen as a surprising underperformance and a performance standard I expected it'd always be relegated to, but now it has a top 200 place. It's one of the better recent Rihanna songs so it's nice to see it up much higher than it was previously.

Big rises for We Are Young and So What are also on the cards, the latter being just about everywhere in the past but now back at its peak ever since its first try all the way back in 2009. On the other hand, there are big falls for I Love It, which was in the final last time but falls short, as well as Summertime Sadness which debuted as the highest 2013 song but is now no longer anywhere near that.

Break Free rises a bit, just behind another Disney star debuting with one of her best songs in recent times, Cool For The Summer is a great pop anthem and I'm actually excited to see it debut well, maybe it can build on that in the future.

Finally, Black And Gold and Shake It Off slip a bit, Shake It Off just missing the final like it did last year but with Taylor's fanbase on here I'm sure it'll push past some of her better songs to get in one year, while Black And Gold saw its first final run, towards the lower end, last year and dips slightly to a result that's still really good for it, it's shown a good rise in the last few years.

116 125 2013 Paramore - Still Into You 150 42 3.571 ( X - 125 - 116 )
117 97 2010 Alicia Keys - Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart 150 42 3.571 ( 33 - 33 - 58 - 91 - 97 - 117 )
118 93 2009 Veronicas - Untouched 149 42 3.548 ( X - 386 - 215 - 286 - 243 - 93 - 118 )
119 80 2008 Saturdays - Up 148 42 3.524 ( 173 - 112 - 43 - 106 - 53 - 19 - 80 - 119 )
120 262 2009 Girls Aloud - Untouchable 148 42 3.524 ( X - 39 - 147 - 199 - 207 - 262 - 120 )

Spare a thought for Fergie, peaking at #101 a few years ago with Big Girls Don't Cry. It had its worst year ever last year falling out of the top 200 for only the second time but has bounced back to ten away from its peak. Still not in the final though. She won't cry, I promise. A ballad a little bit more flaky but more adept at getting into the top 100 is Rihanna's third #2, Unfaithful, on its final appearance in this game. It peaked at an amazing 21st two years ago, I'm still not quite sure how that happened but that couldn't hold up and it's spent its final two years at slightly more modest heights, getting knocked out in the semi-final. It IS still one of my favourite ballads though.

Paramore snatch another peak for Still Into You as it continues to be one of 2013's more loved songs on here to go along with being what I think is pretty much Paramore's biggest hit now. It is so lovely, I'm so pleased it's starting up a successful run. Also very lovely (seriously, this is a great section) is Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart but in this case this has seen continual slippage that sees no sign of abating and so... it will HAVE to keep falling from here (actually it's probably more likely this is just an off year and it'll be back in the final later, don't any Keys fans worry).

Untouched and Untouchable have seemed rather inseparable this year, isn't that funny. Because like, they nearly have the same name and so it looks weird when they're together. Well, it is a pretty good year for both of them although not the best they've ever done, I'm sure they'd be glad to part ways soon (particularly as that GA track couldn't hold a candle to The Veronicas). In between them is another U track, but it's actually going DOWN (I'm hilarious) The Saturdays grasping onto one remaining track in the top 200 as it plummets down from that top 20 position it once achieved. It's at points like this when I start to actually feel sorry for them.

Human had an amazing first couple of years here, I'm slightly surprised to see that because I can never remember it doing as well as it deserves like that. This year... it still hasn't done as well as it deserves, it nearly went straight to the final and couldn't survive a round in the semis, but it's at least much more of an improvement from last time. Finally, David Guetta's first superstar hit When Love Takes Over continues its oscillating and Hotline Bling registers a remarkably good debut for the type of song it is, all hail Drake, master of the house right now.

(btw, when I post the next section, it will be tonight at around midnight I think, ROTD will close so if you haven't voted already, do that!!!)

About to start my votes now ;0 wait 4 me

Posted by: Riser 10th September 2016, 02:51 AM

Yeah, amazing debut for Hotline Bling there. I'd like to see One Dance at least that high next year as long as it hasn't driven everyone crazy by still being in the top 40.

And I love Untouched and Untouchable being almost next to each other! Plus Up and Unfaithful make four one-word U titles in the same section, now THAT'S impressive.

Posted by: Iz~ 10th September 2016, 05:25 PM

Well when I say 'midnight' I of course mean just over 18 hours later. Voting is officially closed and we have a winner now though!

101 19 2011 M83 - Midnight City 173 42 4.119 ( 13 - 15 - 44 - 19 - 101 )
102 185 2011 Florence & The Machine - Shake It Out 173 42 4.119 ( 38 - 82 - 58 - 185 - 102 )
103 98 2011 Katy Perry (feat. Kanye West) - E.T. 172 42 4.095 ( 165 - 114 - 61 - 98 - 103 )
104 159 2006 Lily Allen - Smile 171 42 4.071 ( X - 136 - X - 106 - 323 - 219 - 176 - 208 - 159 - 104 )
105 136 2011 Drake (feat. Rihanna) - Take Care 169 42 4.024 ( 244 - 236 - 132 - 136 - 105 )
106 174 2009 Calvin Harris - I'm Not Alone 169 42 4.024 ( 181 - 48 - 51 - 75 - 155 - 174 - 106 )
107 453 2010 Ellie Goulding - Guns And Horses 168 42 4.000 ( 325 - 249 - 242 - 324 - 453 - 107 )
108 61 2009 La Roux - In For The Kill 166 42 3.952 ( X - 181 - 94 - 294 - 176 - 61 - 108 )
109 111 2014 Iggy Azalea (feat. Charli XCX) - Fancy 165 42 3.929 ( 111 - 109 )
110 NE 2015 Jess Glynne - Hold My Hand 161 42 3.833 ( 110 )

The debut of Hold My Hand has done a lot better than I would have ever expected, Jess Glynne's popularity as anything more than a cipher for talented producers to use for vocals has rather passed me by. But some of you like Hold My Hand a lot, so it joins the last ten to have NEARLY made the final. Just ahead of it, the popularity of Fancy also never ceases to amaze me as it pretty much holds steady outside of the top 100.

For one song that just missed, it was the last time it would be able to have a go. Lily Allen's Smile has been pretty much everywhere but the top 100 in this game, peaking at 106 in one of the early runs. It had never gotten back to that height until this year, which has actually seen a small rise in the popularity of Lily Allen on select songs, and it finishes 4 from the final. In For The Kill falls out from the final last time, leaving only the one La Roux song to battle for the title of best L artist of 2009 (a battle which they CLEARLY win, don't they?), while Calvin Harris rises back to a better position for I'm Not Alone after spending the last two years outside even the semis. It's not the highest Calvin song for once though.

Guns And Horses is another strong Ellie song seeing a huge (and lovely) rise this year, all the way up from #453 this time. That is the third-largest rise this year, I forgot to note the other two, with Gecko (Overdrive) rising one more place than Guns And Horses and Royals outperforming both of them with a huge 373 place rise. Another Drake song falls short of the top 100 and leaves Drizzy out of the final this year although, yeah, he'll probably make it with something in the future.

The last three songs are all from 2011, but no, that's not the year with the least final representation, that's 2010 with only 6, nearly the minimum possible! E.T. slips out from the bottom of the final last time into only just missing it this time, while Shake It Out and Midnight City are two final regulars who got denied a place this year, Midnight City for the first time. Midnight City was the track I entered to BJSC's 10-year contest because it's a track I really associate with Buzzjack and a huge part of that is its amazing run here despite lack of huge commercial success compared to the other tracks that regularly make the final.

Right, I'll start the proper countdown later this evening once I've tallied and checked everything.

FINAL RESULTS BEGIN HERE

91 202 2013 Mariah Carey (feat. Miguel) - #Beautiful 253 ( 249 - 202 - 91 )
92 79 2013 Taylor Swift - I Knew You Were Trouble 252 ( 73 - 79 - 92 )
93 28 2014 Taylor Swift - Blank Space 238 ( 28 - 93 )
94 NE 2015 Ellie Goulding - Love Me Like You Do 235 ( - 94 )
95 72 2006 Justin Timberlake (feat. Timbaland) - SexyBack 225 ( 116 - 63 - X - 150 - 303 - 155 - 49 - 123 - 72 - 95 )
96 112 2014 Ariana Grande (feat. Iggy Azalea) - Problem 222 ( 112 - 96 )
97 90 2007 Amy Winehouse - Tears Dry On Their Own 221 ( 128 - X - X - 232 - 310 - 283 - 255 - 90 - 97 )
98 75 2008 Katy Perry - Hot N Cold 220 ( 88 - 42 - 18 - 41 - 43 - 38 - 75 - 98 )
99 117 2014 Katy Perry (feat. Juicy J) - Dark Horse 216 ( 117 - 99 )
100 123 2006 Rihanna - SOS 216 ( 43 - X - X - 71 - 151 - 273 - 138 - 118 - 123 - 100 )

SOOO.... dead bottom of the final is, a tie. Each on 216 points. Which I've broken because I feel like it which makes SOS finish bottom of the final on its last go at this game - but does this mean we'll see the final bookended by songs leaving ROTD? Who knows (I do). Just beating it out is Katy Perry's first of three songs, her modern classic and Seven fave, Dark Horse. It moves into the final for the first time on only its second go so it perhaps could be one to rise at some point in the future.

Yeah, poor Katy really is the whipping girl of ROTD when it comes to massive faves and it's never been made more clear than right now when her usual strongest challenger, Hot N Cold finishes off her having two of the bottom three. It HAS never been out of the top 100 before but this is really testing it, it has two more years to complete the run.

Tears Dry On Their Own was the song I thought was going to end up at the bottom for quite a while, not gaining anywhere near as many points as the other Amy song, but a couple of fans towards the end pushed her up to get her second best result, it's secured itself a strong position as the secondary Winehouse song around here lately.

Like Dark Horse, Problem rises from just outside the final to just in it. This one got pretty much all of its points from the high pop contingent (I'll take both meanings of that phrase) and so was never going to quite match the other tracks in this final which do tend to have at least some form of crossover appeal.

SexyBack I mistakenly announced at #148 because of a clerical error that saw me add during the semi-final stage instead of Madonna's Sorry, yeah. That's part of what I have to say about it but we also need to say farewell to Justin's announcement of bringing sexy and huge Timbaland beats back. It's not quite at 2013 levels but going out on your third-highest performance is no bad result either.

One of the FOUR Ellie songs in the final (we really overloaded on her this time didn't we) is up next as the lowest 2015 final debut. One of Ellie's biggest hits now, I'm sure this will have a bright future (even if she has better).

I knew the bottom section would be squeezing out some of the pop songs that couldn't grab huge fanbases but I really didn't expect Taylor to be one of the first casualties - with two of her best big hits no less. I Knew You Were Trouble has been stuck around here before but that's a sharp drop for Blank Space nevertheless. This means Taylor is out already, I'm so sorry Ultraviolence. Jahq is also the first person to lose his top score with I Knew You Were Trouble.

#Beautiful's huge rise is a little unusual and unexpected for me so I'll take that, I never saw it getting universal acclaim enough to reach the final so I think it's done very well for itself. Even if that performance does mean finishing in the bottom 10. You can't win them all, especially when you're Mariah and always doomed to lose the war that approaches as the first vestiges of festivity start to make themselves known.

81 56 2014 Ella Henderson - Ghost 293 ( 56 - 81 )
82 198 2013 Disclosure (feat. AlunaGeorge) - White Noise 281 ( 441 - 198 - 82 )
83 89 2009 Beyoncé - Halo 281 ( 134 - 51 - 124 - 66 - 82 - 89 - 83 )
84 133 2006 Beyoncé - Irreplaceable 281 ( 105 - 176 - 55 - 31 - 44 - 79 - 78 - 75 - 133 - 84 )
85 192 2006 Gnarls Barkley - Crazy 275 ( 103 - 48 - 98 - 86 - 119 - 37 - 52 - 115 - 192 - 85 )
86 46 2012 Disclosure (feat. Sam Smith) - Latch 272 ( 102 - 71 - 46 - 86 )
87 181 2008 MGMT - Kids 272 ( X - 12 - 112 - 53 - 189 - 139 - 181 - 87 )
88 328 2012 Calvin Harris (feat. Florence Welch) - Sweet Nothing 259 ( 107 - 117 - 328 - 88 )
89 186 2008 Estelle (feat. Kanye West) - American Boy 256 ( X - 135 - 147 - 196 - 119 - 168 - 186 - 89 )
90 62 2009 Kelly Clarkson - My Life Would Suck Without You 255 ( 28 - 138 - 87 - 168 - 112 - 62 - 90 )

Kelly Clarkson, stripped of her three 2005 powerhouses that served her so reliably in the past, is the next big name out of contention with the comparatively weaker My Life..., which did beat a couple of those 2005 songs sometimes, but has only managed a height of #62 in the days since its 'omg this recent song is the best thing ever' hype.

A couple of songs reaching the top 100 for the first time and they're both songs I wouldn't have expected to see this far... ever really. American Boy was a big radio hit back in the day but it always screamed 'middling Buzzjack fave that we always ignore in favour of brasher pop women', like the rest of the world did to Estelle's career after this. Against that, Calvin and Florence have sustained and grown their careers since but against the otherwise huge anti-Florence tide, Sweet Nothing recovers from that rather anomalous looking dip it had last year and registers a massive climb.

Kids has had a rough time lately, once a huge ROTD big hitter for about... one year it's had to settle for regular top 200 appearances. Here also marks the first of the 'indie hits', if you can call psychedelic pop true indie, that is. Compared to the REST anyway... But yeah, this is where the bare minimum of indie power reaches you and as that's more concentrated than pop, we might see a few more of them start to tumble out and letting the true pop queens move ahead (like they deserve to?).

Coincidentally, or not, indie-dance electronic music duo Disclosure are out next with both of their songs, wonderful wonderful tracks. Latch drops 40 places away from its strongest position but White Noise is seeing the top 100 for the first time, and ABOUT TIME. These two were struggling to get off the bottom but thankfully they got a few points enabling them to move well clear of that bottom ten.

Two Beyoncé songs are also here, the wonderful Halo continuing to wander around the 80s very consistently while Irreplaceable returns to the top 100 after a year's break to finish on a fairly decent position that's just a bit lower than the 70s it was more familiar with. This means that only one (lead) Beyoncé track is left - see, we are hitting the icons hard.

It's also a sad farewell to Gnarls Barkley, one of the more recent huge long #1 runners, but as it reaches 10 years of age now, it's getting kicked out. This was a 2006 everpresent and despite not being totally to Buzzjack's taste it's remained so for a decade, so all good there.

And finally what I had pinned to be the 2014 juggernaut, Ella Henderson doesn't quite live up to that and flops down a bit to land at #81 with just under 300 points. Still plenty of time for it to change but no win contender for Ghost today.

Great countdown! The reversal of fortunes of Ellie and Florence this year really is bizarre and fascinating! Especially given Ellie's big hit last year isn't even leading the way

71 64 2011 Lady Gaga - The Edge Of Glory 321 ( 77 - 88 - 102 - 64 - 71 )
72 NE 2015 Little Mix - Black Magic 320 ( - 72 )
73 67 2014 Beyoncé (feat. Jay-Z) - Drunk In Love 320 ( 67 - 73 )
74 253 2009 Agnes - Release Me 315 ( X - 314 - 226 - 64 - 140 - 253 - 74 )
75 NE 2015 Justin Bieber - Sorry 313 ( 75 )
76 NE 2015 Mark Ronson (feat. Bruno Mars) - Uptown Funk 306 ( 76 )
77 59 2010 Katy Perry - Teenage Dream 306 ( 154 - 161 - 77 - 84 - 59 - 77 )
78 NE 2015 Galantis - Runaway (U&I) 304 ( 78 )
79 NE 2015 Adele - Hello 298 ( 79 )
80 88 2011 Adele - Set Fire To The Rain 296 ( 131 - 109 - 67 - 88 - 80 )

Adele makes her first big appearance in this and like with other artists so far (what is it with ROTD and doing this a lot of the time), it's two of her songs together. Two of her three in the final to be more precise. Set Fire To The Rain moves a bit uninterestingly up to #80. That's cool, but what's more notable to talk about is the AMOUNT of new entries in this section. Half of them are new songs. And one of them was the big new Adele song that spawned a meme at the end of last year, and we all love for that. And I suppose it's a rather good song. Maybe. But it did storm through the rounds to get all the way up here, joined by Justin Bieber's debut appearance in the ROTD final with his dance-pop song Sorry that made TOO MANY people start loving him. For what it is. It starts our top 75.

Just behind that is Galantis, one of the best Scandi-dance exports of recent times with their wonderful emotional breakthrough hit Runaway (U&I) that basically defined 2015's summer for me, and given how badly dance can do here, that's an amazing start for it, may it only continue to climb. Just ahead of it is the fourth new entry, just about THE biggest song of the year, Mark Ronson bringing funk back into the uptown and one I'm sure will be a familiar face around here for years to come given how it managed to refine the pop landscape into something pretty special for a short time (oh god, one year Fleur is going to actually beat it isn't she?)

The final new entry is Little Mix's Black Magic, which Buzzjack likes a lot because it's a strong girlband song. I guess soon we'll have loads of Little Mix songs instead of loads of Girls Aloud songs - I suppose that's an upgrade.

It's no good news for Beyoncé and Katy Perry as their final songs fall just a couple of sections ahead of their already announced songs. Teenage Dream looks to maybe have taken away the title of 'best KP prospect in ROTD' from Hot N Cold and it's certainly a strong contender, but maybe it doesn't quite have the reach to be truly great in this competition. Maybe. The landscape of voters can always change. It has before. Meanwhile Drunk On Love is very new and may have to be the best Beyoncé can hope for in the future as all of her Sasha Fierce and 4 songs are just a bit too divisive to reach high aside from Halo. Drunk On Love also has a very cool appeal to it that does help it along, it's not really my sort of thing but I can easily get swept up in it regardless. That's what you want for a song to get a wide audience.

Agnes bounces back from her fall last year to register another top 100 place after it looked like the first might be a fluke. This must actually be then the first ROTD final for Release Me and I must say, it's done rather well, even if it was towards the bottom for a lot of it, it managed to pull clear of the bottom 20 in the end.

The first Gaga song, I didn't expect it to be The Edge Of Glory, I mentally note where tracks were during the adding process and Edge was far higher in my mind than this. The only representation from Born This Way to get this far, one of Gaga's more simple and epic songs has always got some sort of audience and registers its fourth year in the top 100 out of 5. All good for the first lady of ROTD so far...

(And that's it for tonight! I'll resume this tomorrow, speculate away, discuss what tracks have appeared, what tracks haven't appeared yet, all that)

Posted by: Mack 10th September 2016, 09:40 PM

I think Bad Romance will regain its crown. 'Black Magic' wasn't really a fan of this at first but it has become one of the biggest girl band songs in the UK in the last 2 years deserves a place in the Top75.

I'm stoked to see what the top song of each year will be and if there'll be any changes or surprises there...

Loving so so many of these, all my favourites seem to fall early! Love Me Like You Do, Release Me, Ghost and Hot N Cold are my highlights of the ones that have fallen, the latter in particular should be much higher!

I'm surprised Uptown Funk has done this well, thought Buzzjack as a whole would still be tired of it from how long it was in the charts. Especially since Pharrell's Happy doesn't seem to be here at all and that's the closest equivalent I can think of. I've said it already but this shows it really could go either way for One Dance next year.

61 36 2012 Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe 340 ( 47 - 32 - 36 - 61 )
62 96 2014 G.R.L - Ugly Heart 334 ( 96 - 62 )
63 173 2014 Kiesza - Hideaway 332 ( 173 - 63 )
64 310 2011 Coldplay - Paradise 330 ( 66 - 123 - 222 - 310 - 64 )
65 164 2012 Ellie Goulding - Anything Could Happen 328 ( 55 - 149 - 164 - 65 )
66 275 2011 Chase & Status (feat. Liam Bailey) - Blind Faith 328 ( 279 - 216 - 217 - 275 - 66 )
67 87 2009 Lady Gaga - Poker Face 325 ( 2 - 34 - 40 - 22 - 55 - 87 - 67 )
68 187 2008 Elbow - One Day Like This 324 ( X - X - 227 - 140 - 115 - 120 - 187 - 68 )
69 55 2013 Justin Timberlake - Mirrors 322 ( 57 - 55 - 69 )
70 RE 2010 Owl City - Fireflies 322 ( 259 - 164 - 309 - 434 - X - 70 )

Fireflies takes probably the biggest jump from last year as it makes a massive re-entry that's far higher than it's ever been before. I gave this a 40 as it is definitely my favourite song in this competition and one of my favourite songs ever (the perfect geek-pop anthem to insomnia) but I'm very happy it even got this far because I'm used to it reporting a performance similar to what happened in the past three years.

It's not the only one seeing a huge improvement in fortunes, Paradise sees the highest climb barring re-entries after a poor year for Coldplay last year, it's bounced back and grabs a peak by two places. Coldplay's second #1, it's also their second-highest song here and it has become one of their most well-loved modern tracks.

Blind Faith moves up from continuous 200s placings to a top 100 place and like with Fireflies, I'm not sure how it managed to come straight to the final but I'm incredibly pleased it did so, one of the most excellent parts of the dubstep wave of the turn of the decade, it managed to get enough points to get a decent position, again one I thought would struggle in the final but it's done very well to get up here.

Hideaway moves way up from last year as Buzzjack recalls just how great Hideaway really was at the time, and yet even that isn't the final song in this section seeing the top 100 to the first time - the song with the longest wait for it goes to Elbow's One Day Like This. Always in recent times a top 200 regular, it nearly got enough to go to the semis for the first time last year but didn't quite (on account of RFC missing that round) but this time it managed both semis and final with ease. It's the lowest song on the list to have gotten two top scores, which really shows how concentrated the love for this was.

On songs that were in the top 100 before, we say goodbye to Justin Timberlake in this competition as his new strongest performer, Mirrors, slips a bit, Poker Face continues its performances of being one of the less strong Gaga songs in the final after coming second one year, and Ugly Heart shows that not all girlband songs are doomed to fall when Saturdays fans leave us, they can actually climb if they have excellent hooks.

Finally, Carly Rae Jepsen may be out a bit early as Call Me Maybe has its worst ever result, but unlike before, this time she has another song in this fight and it's one people have touted as a contender, so perhaps that's just points transference talking...

51 245 2013 HAIM - Falling 361 ( X - 245 - 51 )
52 73 2008 Britney Spears - Piece Of Me 361 ( 102 - 85 - 272 - 173 - 163 - 161 - 73 - 52 )
53 26 2013 Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know? 360 ( 66 - 26 - 53 )
54 27 2012 Azealia Banks - 212 360 ( 50 - 26 - 27 - 54 )
55 82 2008 Alphabeat - Fascination 360 ( X - 159 - 351 - 128 - 90 - 87 - 82 - 55 )
56 119 2009 Little Boots - Remedy 352 ( 45 - 50 - 84 - 150 - 83 - 119 - 56 )
57 38 2013 Little Mix - Move 349 ( 40 - 38 - 57 )
58 63 2007 Kate Nash - Foundations 343 ( 159 - X - X - 125 - 138 - 81 - 56 - 63 - 58 )
59 31 2010 Rihanna (feat. Drake) - What's My Name 342 ( 36 - 65 - 60 - 23 - 31 - 59 )
60 137 2007 Paramore - Misery Business 341 ( X - X - X - 487 - 286 - 386 - 204 - 137 - 60 )

Again starting off a section with a huge fave of mine that's got itself a huge huge peak this year, it's MISERY BUSINESS. I was so excited to see this get to the final as Paramore never have before and with only two years left I was wondering whether its constant improvement would ever let me be able to reward it with so many points. That run is really quite beautiful to look at and it shows just how songs can age well and find greater audiences on here as the makeup of Buzzjack slowly changes.

I did get it wrong earlier, Drake does have some representation in the final but it's the same representation he's been having for years, being featured on a Rihanna song. What's My Name is one of the many Rihanna songs in this final, she's actually got more than Gaga this year, but it was one of the ones that wasn't going to be doing as well as some others from the start, despite its impressive run.

Already we're getting to songs that I had seen go really high at some point in the adding stage and Remedy is definitely one of those. It was always way higher than the similar looking Little Mix tracks but in the end it only finishes just ahead, this final is tight. Remedy bounces back into the final for the first time since 2010 in actual fact which seems surprising for a song that is loved so much, it's good to see it back at these heights anyway. Move has never had a problem getting to the final on the other hand and while it drops to its lowest position yet it's not a bad position by any means and there's plenty of life left in it I'msure.

Foundations nearly reaches a new peak but in any case seems pretty comfortable around this new high, it was also looking to be a bit higher than this but like Remedy, faltered a bit in points collecting towards the end.

Then we reach the 360 point mark and there are three A artists on a tie. I find that very pleasing. And... two of them have peaked at #26. Do I Wanna Know and 212 couldn't really be more different in terms of song sound but they seem stuck together for ROTD lately (and they ARE both massive faves). Fascination is obviously a little older but is a song that's only started to really get appreciated by Buzzjack properly in recent years - it always used to land just outside my votes in 2008 terms, this year, it snuck in. A more joyful pop song you could scarcely imagine.

Speaking of long-serving sufferers getting a peak, Piece Of Me, which has had to suffer through me and/or Bre shading it every time it shows up in this game, gets itself a peak for the second year in a row. I suppose it is one of the few huge Britney prospects left available to Britney stans and people who don't host ROTD seem to rather like it (at least in recent years, RFC does like it, I remember he dislikes a different Brit song in this final, one that's higher). For myself, I'm just incredibly pleased that THE QUEENS OF MUSIC (AND GIRLBAND RATES) HAIM have not disgraced themselves on their first final appearance and Falling has finished far higher than I thought it would throughout adding up with tons of people towards the end giving it high points. And this isn't even their final song, meaning that HAIM have a song in the top half of the final. cheer.gif

That last section is incredible!
Piece Of Me, Foundations, Move, Fascination and Misery Business are all 10/10 fabulous and Remedy is in my top 10 of all time so great to see most of those climbing wub.gif

Amazing few sections there, Fireflies, Paradise, Falling & Blind Faith wub.gif Have no idea how the latter did so well this year at all, Chase & Status aren't even currently active! But always lovely to see a track outperform expectations.

Very pleased to see my 40 pointer, One Day Like This, get to the final this time. Hopefully can improve on it's peak in the two years it has left (that feels weird to say sad.gif)

Awesome to see Kiesza and Ellie inside the top of 100.

They are, it's just that no-one is noticing because they're not putting out any good songs. Seriously their singles from their forthcoming album have so far been so poor. sad.gif

Have to echo this, Control was alright & a nice switch up but everything else has been pretty awful summed up by Spoken Word one of the worst songs I've heard this year.

Luckily their new track All Goes Wrong sounds very promising.

Literally if I could have given Uptown Funk minus points I would've. It's one of the songs that's never gelled with me at all. If it (and sound-alikes) keep getting made and played into next year, I reckon it will drop for sure.

41 74 2009 La Roux - Bulletproof 380 ( X - 330 - 125 - 211 - 80 - 74 - 41 )
42 153 2012 Ellie Goulding - Figure 8 374 ( 120 - 160 - 153 - 42 )
43 51 2011 Adele - Rolling In The Deep 374 ( 8 - 18 - 24 - 51 - 43 )
44 9 2008 M.I.A - Paper Planes 373 ( X - X - 52 - 36 - 44 - 28 - 9 - 44 )
45 18 2007 Britney Spears - Gimme More 371 ( 40 - 52 - 67 - 62 - 92 - 132 - 16 - 18 - 45 )
46 32 2012 Swedish House Mafia - Don’t You Worry Child 365 ( 26 - 64 - 32 - 46 )
47 NE 2015 Years & Years - Shine 363 ( 47 )
48 83 2006 Nelly Furtado - Maneater 363 ( 8 - 14 - 27 - 48 - 47 - 39 - 29 - 50 - 83 - 48 )
49 194 2013 HAIM - The Wire 362 ( X - 194 - 49 )
50 138 2011 Ellie Goulding - Lights 362 ( X - 131 - 111 - 138 - 50 )

Turns out to be a short-lived victory for HAIM as they go out with their other song in the very next batch, just one point ahead of Falling, as it happens. The Wire is nearly as good and a wonderful rhythmic guitar pop song so I hope this isn't a one year thing for the group and they can continue to make the demand clear. Another Ellie song shows up, into the top 100 for the first time after three years hanging outside - Lights, one of her most famous songs worldwide has kept some of its resonation here to be our #50.

An impressive run for the next 2006 song to finish up here, although never quite reaching the top 10 like it did on the first run through, Maneater has spent most of its time being a 2006 top dog and has been in the top 50 every year apart from the last - I'm not even sure what happened there. On the same score as it is a new entry from Years & Years, the first of their two in this final to show up, a very impressive performance for a male group in ROTD, I wonder where King will finish.

Don't You Worry Child was the song that got through the semis on the tiebreak that kept Midnight City out and it's made up for scraping through by putting in a very impressive performance in the top half. Also a final regular, it's had a fairly pleasing looking chart run and this sort of continues, all those even numbers...

What I thought would be Britney's biggest song until it left doesn't even take that title this year as Gimme More drops after two years in the top 20. And we've also lost our first of last year's top 10 as Paper Planes can't sustain a #9 and has to make do with mid-40s. Sadly, but with the high points totals something had to shift.

Rolling In The Deep reverses direction as Adele leaves the fight with what's probably going to remain her biggest song here. And that's be something I'd be happy with, Rolling is one of the few songs where her artistry really shows excitement to me these days and shows she's more than just a balladeer.

Another Ellie Goulding song goes, and in actual fact, Figure 8 is her DONE here, for all her increased domination this year she hasn't yet got a song to get into the top 40 of the decade, and one of her flops, Figure 8 is the song that's apparently closest to that. Which I quite agree with, it's a huge power of a song and definitely one of her best if not THE best she's done. Sitting in the mid-100s really wasn't enough for this.

I swear Bulletproof was doing even better than this on most of the adding up, it's really done incredibly well this year, it normally does well but as you can see, that chart run has never seen it quite this high. I'm even surprised it took as long as it did to become a top 100 staple, it's always one of my top picks for 2009 for being a whirlwind of a pop song, and one I would definitely support toppling Bad Romance there one of these years (let's make it happen).

Posted by: Riser 12th September 2016, 04:31 AM

Wow, so many great songs in the final getting massive new peaks! Fascination and Bulletproof are two of my all-time faves and Lights, Falling, and Piece of Me are high up there as well! wub.gif

36 110 2011 Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks 390 ( 54 - 154 - 107 - 110 - 36 )
37 44 2010 Lady Gaga & Beyoncé - Telephone 385 ( 26 - 23 - 38 - 45 - 44 - 37 )
38 47 2011 Nicki Minaj - Super Bass 382 ( 110 - 103 - 14 - 47 - 38 )
39 163 2009 Lady Gaga - Paparazzi 382 ( 40 - 40 - 72 - 62 - 151 - 163 - 39 )
40 121 2008 Britney Spears - Womanizer 381 ( 51 - 87 - 129 - 112 - 275 - 63 - 121 - 40 )

Well, Britney's gone down now, a lot earlier than she has in past years, although it comes with a new peak for Womanizer, never the strongest Britney challenger, in fact, looking at the run and with how the final has expanded over the years this may actually have been a first final for it, depends if the final was 50 or 60 back in 2009. It's done well, to start off a section full of pop faves.

Up above it is Paparazzi which has finally done what I thought was never going to happen and reversed its decline to beat its double #40 peak. By one. It's one of the Gaga songs which has held up better so I am happy to see that, just as I'm quite interested in what caused that massive decline. Two ahead of it, it's another Gaga song, one with Beyoncé, that always does far better than I expect it to, this year more so than before as it didn't win 2010 for once and even went through the semi-final. But given its remarkable consistency that's its third best performance and it remains the second-most popular Gaga song (and for other Gaga songs, that's like winning).

Finally Pumped Up Kicks has done an excellent job of being the song that bedevils and annoys pop types for this year, nearly winning 2011 and still doing well here, it's jumped back into the fray with amazing power and I hope that this indie pop anthem can sustain what's now its peak for a good few years more.

31 71 2010 Rihanna - Only Girl (In The World) 409 ( 154 - 161 - 77 - 84 - 71 - 31 )
32 NE 2015 Major Lazer (feat. DJ Snake & MØ) - Lean On 405 ( 32 )
33 24 2006 My Chemical Romance - Welcome To The Black Parade 404 ( X - X - X - X - 445 - 228 - 300 - 125 - 24 - 33 )
34 25 2007 Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love 401 ( 21 - 1 - 4 - 108 - 61 - 21 - 8 - 25 - 34 )
35 85 2008 Rihanna - Don't Stop The Music 392 ( 92 - 63 - 61 - 175 - 187 - 138 - 85 - 35 )

Bookending a fairly wonderful section, we have two Rihanna songs here, both getting new peaks. I might as well talk about them together as their runs are fairly similar. Don't Stop The Music is a bit older and always one that's a bit more divisive I'd have thought, it's the sort of song I found annoying for ages before taking a proper listen and actually rather liking its energy. Only Girl meanwhile was a hit as I started following the charts properly and really stuck with me because of that, one of the songs out at Rihanna's high point of success and in terms of ROTD, a track that's always been a bit overshadowed by all the very many other Rihanna songs around, it seems this year it's shaken that off a bit. Only a bit, mind you, as it is still only the 4th highest Rihanna song.

Bleeding Love, Leona's biggest hit, is the first former winner we come across, as normal really, it's been top 10 three times in varying eras of Buzzjack but doesn't have enough consistency to do quite that well all the time and makes its penultimate appearance as the first track over 400 points in this final.

Then we have the new against the old. Lean On I was always expecting to make a respectable debut like so, it's one of the few big hits that even on here there has been very little bad said about them, it kickstarted the commercial career of all acts involved through to this year and is a very well-played and enjoyable modern classic (acceptance pending). May even move up in future years, although we'll see.

Against that we have the final appearance of a track whose brilliant success has really helped make running this enjoyable for me in the last few years. It's not quite a new peak for Welcome To The Black Parade but it's quite easily the second-best perfomance it's gotten and I'll take that any day over what came before. Just look at that beautiful rise. Full of strong votes from me and other wonderful people, its anthemic legacy will live on, will carry on, in ROTD memory as one of the best turnarounds on a song Buzzjack has ever had. *.*

Quite surprised that it's taken this long for 'Only Girl (In The World)' to place Top 40 in this! I thought it'd have had way more popularity over the years.

What an unusual run for Bleeding Love, falling out of the Top 100 only two years after winning (what went wrong that year ohmy.gif ), and then clawing its way back up to the Top 10. Glad to see that it has at least managed Top 40 for the past 4 years.

Posted by: danG 12th September 2016, 01:16 PM

good to see 'Lean On' so high already!!

an early top 10 prediction from me:

01 Lady GaGa - Bad Romance
02 Robyn - With Every Heartbeat (feat. Kleerup)
03 Rihanna - We Found Love (feat. Calvin Harris)
04 Robyn - Dancing On My Own
05 Sia - Chandelier
06 Carly Rae Jepsen - Run Away With Me
07 Loreen - Euphoria
08 Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
09 Clean Bandit - Rather Be (feat. Jess Glynne)
10 David Guetta - Titanium (feat. Sia)

yep I think it's Lady GaGa's turn again especially with the recent hype around her comeback. Wouldn't rule out either of the Robyn songs though and 'We Found Love' is guaranteed to do well again too.

Posted by: 360Jupiter 12th September 2016, 02:45 PM

I don't think Carly Rae will win this year (unless she does), but I would expect that track to threaten it in the future as it gets more recognised as a classic.

In other news I'm a little disappointed at my 40 throughout a few rounds, Shine, going out so early, but at the same time, I'm impressed it did so well. King was probably always going to rack up more points, but it's never done it for me - in fact, I completely dismissed Y&Y based on it.

Can't quite remember what else is left. I'm guessing Umbrella and WFL are the other two Rihanna songs to come?

Posted by: RobBob 12th September 2016, 03:09 PM

After 'We Found Love' underperforming in its year, I'm glad to see it's still at least managed top 30. The Haim climbs are completely baffling, a disappointing year for both my Katy & Little Mix faves but I'm used to Katy being undeservedly unappreciated in this thing, compared to the other pop girls. Glad to see Super Bass doing well though and personally I'm hoping for a 'Run Away With Me' win if at all possible.

26 189 2012 Lana Del Rey - Born To Die 431 ( 104 - 119 - 189 - 26 )
27 23 2014 Clean Bandit (feat. Jess Glynne) - Rather Be 429 ( 23 - 27 )
28 101 2013 Bastille - Pompeii 425 ( 46 - 101 - 28 )
29 22 2007 Girls Aloud - Sexy! No No No 416 ( X - 42 - 99 - 104 - 177 - 73 - 30 - 22 - 29 )
30 21 2012 Solange - Losing You 411 ( 188 - 77 - 21 - 30 )

Losing You seems to have solidified its position as a completely underrated fave from 2012 and again, sees Solange move far higher than her sister. It's a small drop on last year but that's pretty inconsequential compared to the rises it had seen before. It's one of the songs that pretty much everyone likes and benefits from that despite being little known. We can definitely get our own faves here with that sort of power.

Rather Be is not a contender... again. I really thought it would be at some point, I thought it would dominate in its first year and this year I thought it was looking to do even better but instead it drops 4 places. It's still a very good position but it hasn't yet got the power to reach the top 10 although I'll tempt fate and tell you to watch for this one, it won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

Pompeii reaches a new peak, rather wonderfully, Bastille have been one of the great debuts of the 2010s with a pretty good fanbase on here for what is a simple alt-pop band, but Pompeii is the greatest of their works, you can feel like you are watching the destruction of the titular city through the instrumental and his voice remains one of the best and most distinctive things about their songs on here.

Born To Die, I'm surprised it hasn't been higher before but Lana's seen a huge increase for her two most popular songs and so that means that Born To Die is a mere whisker away from the top 25. That's a very very big and well-earned climb, the highest in the top 40, for one of the best examples of majestic but sad pop that Lana specialises in.

Then Sexy!, I have made no secret in the past of me really not understanding this one's popularity, it is easily my least favourite GA single and I see no redeeming qualities it has, whatsoever. Apparently, I'm alone in that and that's okay, but this means that for the last three years in ROTD it has come 6th in 2007, storming through the semis and making me add up points for it as much as possible over three rounds, while retaining for three years on the trot the title of my least-favourite song in the final, in the top 30 for three times in a row. Which doesn't help my feelings. Oh and it's the second-highest Girls Aloud song now owing to them losing many big contenders as 2002-2005 slip away from us. Jay or Joseph or someone will be sure to extol its virtues to balance this out. I predict it'll go even higher on its last year next time. To punish me.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 12th September 2016, 03:10 PM

Still can't quite believe MCR made that leap to the final just last year, I remember when I first started voting in these that it always did awfully in it's yearly round, but hooray for people finally seeing the light almost ten years after release *.* Will very much miss it from this game (indeed 2006 will be a big loss, so many amazing songs from that year).

What an unusual run for Bleeding Love, falling out of the Top 100 only two years after winning (what went wrong that year ohmy.gif )

I think, 2007 being the competitive round that it is, it only made 12th and so couldn't advance to the semis given the parameters (top 3 and then top 10, instead of top 5 and then top 15) at that time. That format can sometimes lead to very unusual runs.

Posted by: Iz~ 12th September 2016, 03:31 PM

21 42 2009 Lily Allen - The Fear 455 ( 29 - 10 - 48 - 48 - 39 - 42 - 21 )
22 16 2013 Daft Punk (feat. Pharrell) - Get Lucky 448 ( 35 - 16 - 22 )
23 33 2012 David Guetta (feat. Sia) - Titanium 444 ( 7 - 17 - 33 - 23 )
24 34 2007 Nelly Furtado - Say It Right 443 ( 2 - 8 - 39 - 13 - 9 - 30 - 27 - 34 - 24 )
25 40 2006 P!nk - Who Knew 443 ( 22 - 111 - 22 - 24 - 29 - 85 - 86 - 20 - 40 - 25 )

Funny thing about The Fear, after about half of the votes had been added, this one was the one leading the whole thing! Of course that couldn't hold, I didn't really expect it to although it would have certainly been a nice shock, it only got 114 of its points in the second half of voters so crashed down. It's nearly always the second in 2009 although it wasn't quite this year, losing to Bulletproof. But it beat that in the final anyway so all's well for Lily. And this will probably be her only real presence in this game from now on unless we see a huge rise for Hard Out Here or something. Or maybe that Keane cover could get a reprise. But very impressive performance for The Fear and I'm sorry it missed the top 20 in the end.

Get Lucky is a song whose appeal is mostly lost on the more pop-oriented voters I tend to notice, instead it's a big target for the more alternative of us as one of the finest and slickest huge hits in recent years, bringing eternal relevance to Daft Punk and eternal dismay to those who protested about the 2013-14 dominance of Pharrell. It slightly slips a bit but is looking pretty good to hold where it is for the time being, unless Buzzjack gets totally overrun by even more pop fans in the near future. Some of whom may even like it.

Again, Titanium also loses out a bit, although it's at least a rise from last year. Like with Rather Be I always expect this to do slightly better except in the year it came top 10 but even the strongest of dance singles can't get in there unless they're lucky, I guess. And this time it's been overtaken by another Sia song. Maybe that'll be two next year with Cheap Thrills...

Say It Right was an old top 10 contender but hasn't done that so much lately, although this is just about the highest it has been for a few years, rising ten places as Nelly Furtado's highest song to draw with P!nk's highest song. Who Knew has had a bit more of a struggle consistently performing well but as a very likeable anthem about an old friendship gone it's pretty much always been her most appreciated song here. I'm not actually sure what will take the place of that next year.

Completely agreed, I was going to say the exact same! I really would've thought Born To Die and Video Games would be loved fairly equally in this but hopefully that will be the case from now on.

19 NE 2015 Years & Years - King 459 ( 19 )
20 10 2007 Girls Aloud - Call The Shots 456 ( 30 - 10 - 16 - 17 - 55 - 11 - 41 - 10 - 20 )

Second-highest new entry goes to the first major hit for Years & Years, the fairly wonderful King, loved by nearly all of Buzzjack that I can see, setting it and Y&Y in general up for a good future in this game. I haven't really listened to it for a while so it sounds fresh to me, and it's definitely one of the better #1 singles we've had lately. It was challenging for the top 10 for at least a bit of this but has to settle for a top 20 debut, which is very good in all fairness.

Sad times as Girls Aloud go out of the race, as Call The Shots drops from 10th place to 20th place. It's been in the final every year so far and most of those in the top 20 so this is actually a bit of a slightly worse result for it. But it's definitely one of the better Girls Aloud singles (no shade here) and well deserves its continuing legacy as their most popular song here.

17 13 2007 Sugababes - About You Now 463 ( 24 - 9 - 9 - 21 - 56 - 27 - 13 - 13 - 17 )
18 17 2008 Coldplay - Viva La Vida 462 ( 15 - 51 - 15 - 32 - 28 - 79 - 17 - 18 )

Guys, we've reached the highest FULLY male song at #18, as Viva La Vida sneaks ahead of King by a mere 3 points (almost certainly due to Bré's votes). There are plenty of songs (well, six) still to come with (credited) male involvement but they all have a woman with them as well. Viva La Vida is a great song to take up the mantle of Mr Brightside and I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor, definitely Coldplay's best for me and so it seems for Buzzjack as well, with four years in the top 20. It's just slightly short of its double peak at #15 but well, great result for them.

We have another song with a double peak just ahead of Coldplay, only this double peak is in the top 10, but that top 10 is one that About You Now has been trying and just failing to reach for the past three years. It was in there at several points during the adding up but couldn't quite sustain. Again, easily the most loved Sugababes song in this game consistently, and one of the best girlband singles Buzzjack has ever loved full stop, its pop glory has held it well for 9 years (except for maybe that one year at #56), I wonder how well it will do on its last try next year. Actually, 2007 is going to be a huge year to let go next year...

15 49 2012 Gotye (feat. Kimbra) - Somebody That I Used To Know 475 ( 19 - 62 - 49 - 15 )
16 2 2011 Rihanna (feat. Calvin Harris) - We Found Love 465 ( 15 - 5 - 3 - 2 - 16 )

So last year's runner-up (by a very narrow margin) falls all the way to #16. It's actually not even the highest Rihanna song anymore... or even the second-highest. I'm sure I thought it'd be a shoe in to win one year or something so I'm surprised at the falloff for We Found Love, although since 2011's frankly very weird yearly round I was sort of expecting it. Still the second-highest 2011 song after not going straight to the final, I think that's a slight turnaround worth celebrating. And this may be its lowest year but there is plenty of life in it yet to stage a comeback one year.

It's a new peak for Gotye's Somebody That I Used To Know as it recovers from a couple of off years and everyone remembers why it's so good and so addictive to listen to over and over again. Or that's just my experience with it, it has an obscene amount of plays for me because it's such joyous easy listening. The duet and interacting voices of both Gotye and Kimbra really help. We could use a big old 'indie' hit like this again, anything like this would really stand out wonderfully in the current landscape. Someone get Gotye to stage a Good Time-sized comeback.

13 45 2011 Lana Del Rey - Video Games 476 ( 52 - 42 - 43 - 45 - 13 )
14 52 2014 Sia - Chandelier 475 ( 52 - 14 )

Going fast and hard towards the top 10, we lose two more potential contenders, two songs that both started their ROTD careers at #52. What are the odds? Though it's rather a quicker march up the field for Chandelier than the other, I swear it was seeded first in 2014 last time, and it's nearly managed to get itself as the top 2014 song, with only one more of those left. A song filled with huge singing and wild abandon, it really was the song to kickstart Sia's career as a mainstream solo artist, and famously, on here, was a song that hung around in the charts for absolutely a goddamn age, which is perhaps why it didn't debut as high as its Buzzjack-friendliness would have had people predicting. Here though, that seems to have worn off and Sia is flying high again.

Video Games has spent a bit longer waiting for that big breakthrough, having spent the last four years at nearly the same position. This time, it really did break through, winning 2011 in its yearly round and here as well. Actually, small fact, 2011 is the ONLY year out of our ten to fall before the top 10. That top 10 consists of 9 different years. I think that's nearly as close to neat as we could have gotten. But Video Games, definitely appealing to us in the beautiful ballad stakes, I've never particularly rated it next to Lana's other songs but it's still a very nice song that I can appreciate at times. Most other people love it a lot more than me. And honestly, it might have been a several years long grower because it definitely sounds better to me now than it ever has before.

and in fact is STILL in the official top 100, it's literally spent over 2 years in the top 100 {106 weeks at the moment and counting}.

BOO at 'We Found Love' dropping off so much, what happened to it? sad.gif

Posted by: Iz~ 13th September 2016, 11:18 AM

11 12 2007 Rihanna (feat. Jay-Z) - Umbrella 501 ( 5 - 2 - 3 - 7 - 28 - 34 - 12 - 12 - 11 )
12 5 2007 Amy Winehouse - Back To Black 494 ( 23 - 118 - 82 - 4 - 3 - 9 - 9 - 5 - 12 )

And so the last two to fall before the top 10 are both from 2007. I said it'd be a huge year to lose. In fact both of these are top 10 regulars, although Umbrella has been just missing out on the regular lately too. Once the safety net we all indulged in, secure in the knowledge that no one could ever give us a long #1 run more torturous than Rihanna's dominance over summer 2007, you might have heard that that has been broken recently. I don't think I would have gotten bored of Umbrella even if I were paying attention to the charts at the time though, it is a very joyful pop song and one that has been high in Buzzjack's hearts for a very long time. Actually, the start of that run looks similar to We Found Love's. Guys, this could be where We Found Love is in 4 years.

Back To Black ends a 5-year run in the top 10, one that I always thought it'd slip up on eventually but it's taken this long for it to happen. Notably it started doing really well in the same year that Amy tragically passed away and has never really faltered in the same way since - death causing a new appreciation for the artist? Perhaps. But Back To Black is a wonderful soul-pop song and definitely one wide-appealing enough to continually do well at this sort of thing, those early years are probably just anomalies. It, along with Video Games and Welcome To The Black Parade got some of the highest concentrations of high scores outside of the top 10, this is definitely a song built on the strength of huge love here.

So that means the top 10, all over 500 points, is...
Carly Rae Jepsen - Run Away With Me
CHVRCHES - The Mother We Share
Katy B - Crying For No Reason
Lady Gaga - Bad Romance
Loreen - Euphoria
Of Monsters And Men - Little Talks
Rihanna - Disturbia
Robyn - Dancing On My Own
Robyn - With Every Heartbeat
Shakira (feat. Wyclef Jean) - Hips Don't Lie

You may predict and speculate away at what order they will appear in.

top 10 prediction:

1 Lady Gaga - Bad Romance
2 Robyn - With Every Heartbeat
3 Robyn - Dancing On My Own
4 Carly Rae Jepsen - Run Away With Me
5 Loreen - Euphoria
6 Of Monsters And Men - Little Talks
7 Shakira (feat. Wyclef Jean) - Hips Don't Lie
8 CHVRCHES - The Mother We Share
9 Rihanna - Disturbia
10 Katy B - Crying For No Reason

surprised Disturbia is more highly regarded than Umbrella and We Found Love in this.

nooooooo @ Back to Black dropping out of the top ten, such an exquisitely crafted song and half of that top ten PALES in comparison. it had a good run tho, hopefully it can get back in for its final go next year!

good to see Crying For No Reason so beloved, tho, and really quite surprised by Disturbia (which I've lost love for) and The Mother We Share (great song, just never really thought of it as a big hitter and I think Lies is a bit better)

I expect Bad Romance to win again, but Run Away With Me to be nipping at its heels. but I've never been good at predicting anything.

SIR GOTYE yahoo.gif Somebody That I Used To Know still sounds every bit as good as back in 2011/12, one of the decade's most iconic and influential hit singles <3

Deserved climb for Video Games as well!

Amazing Top 10. I'm going to predict a Swedish top 2 with Loreen finally taking the cake. Carly is gonna go Top 5, OMAM could sneak into 6th and Katy B and Chvrches might warm up the bottom two places (though I'd be happy to be wrong). Wouldn't place Bad Romance and Disturbia anywhere near my personal Top 10 and would gladly switch them out for #11 and #12 but the rest are amazing.

Predicta:
01 Loreen - Euphoria
02 Robyn - With Every Heartbeat
03 Lady Gaga - Bad Romance
04 Carly Rae Jepsen - Run Away With Me
05 Robyn - Dancing On My Own
06 Of Monsters And Men - Little Talks
07 Shakira (feat. Wyclef Jean) - Hips Don't Lie
08 Katy B - Crying For No Reason
09 Rihanna - Disturbia
10 CHVRCHES - The Mother We Share

Absolutely agree with you on Video Games, Iz, it's never struck me as a breakout hit for Lana in the way some of her other songs have.

So proud of CHVRCHES doing so well, I've been a fan since their first small gigs when I lived in Scotland.

That Robyn doubling-up in the top 10 is impressive. Truly we have better taste than the music-buying (streaming?) public at large. Seeing two of our eventual top 10 as non-top 20 - in fact, barely top 40 - hits makes me happy.

On that note, seeing Sia's success over the last few years after being in the game for 20 and only a few minors makes me wonder if Robyn is due a renaissance and new commercial success. Not completely out of the running for it to happen I think!

CHVRCHES & Of Monsters & Men in the top 10 heart.gif Now that I didn't expect. Also Only just occurred to me that it will be With Every Heartbeat's last year next year, that'll be some big shoes to fill (Run Away With Me I'd imagine has that power).

I'm surprised We Found Love that fell that much, I've been appreciating it even more after her awful new material this year kink.gif Certainly more so than Disturbia. Lana's rises are both quite surprising too but both deserved. Coldplay being still top 20 is great too, just a shame Adventure of a Lifetime didn't get the same good fortune as their other material did this time sad.gif

10. 48 2012 Of Monsters And Men - Little Talks 504 ( 54 - 106 - 48 - 10 )

So let's kick off the top 10. With one of the most surprising, for me, and yet very pleasing entrants in there, just at my favourite place of 10th, Little Talks has jumped back up from its second year falter in the past two years, being a strong entrant last year and an even stronger contender here. It just kept getting points from all over the place, some unexpected ones as well, and I guess part of that is because it's just such a cheery, light-hearted song. Honestly, I have a bit of a confession to make with this, I love the lyrics and have listened to this song over 150 times so you'd have thought I'd know all sorts of interpretations, but a Reddit comment earlier this year made me realise the song could easily be about an old woman talking to her dead husband. And I never noticed that for years because it sounds so happy. I think (finally) figuring this theming thing out has made it even more epic for me.

But yes, excellent start to the top 10, let's see how it continues.

Posted by: Iz~ 14th September 2016, 01:36 PM

9 14 2014 Katy B - Crying For No Reason 509 ( 14 - 9 )

So with one of the 2012 songs going out, we have an entirely disparate top 9. And the second year to go is 2014, as Crying For No Reason moves UP five places. I was so sure that her great performance last year would have been a fluke (like with Summertime Sadness the year before) that this song climbing has completely knocked my predictions for future ROTDs off guard. Not that it's a bad thing as the emotion in this song is so apparent, so the combination of that, with an artist who's only gotten more critical acclaim as her career has moved forward, has created a song in Crying For No Reason that looks to be a future contender even. Again, I should be wary about making those kinds of predictions but I don't see high points for this song slowing down at any point in the future if they could hold two years, it's surely going to only age better.

Plus that outro is godly, some of the best instrumentation I've ever seen someone from her kind of British dancepop ever do.

Posted by: Iz~ 14th September 2016, 01:42 PM

8 53 2013 CHVRCHES - The Mother We Share 520 ( 131 - 53 - 8 )

Does this get all the shock top 10s, who are 'mildly indie' in that they don't have their Buzzjack home in the pop forum, songs out of the way? Actually, I can't remember which one Robyn goes in. No matter. The first part of that statement is true. I mean, I had a few high hopes for CHVRCHES but really never to this extent. They have probably grown into my literal favourite thing about pure British pop in the last few years, because they are so consistent in making that sort of electropop that is so easy to listen to over and over. Nearly all blogpop since them has seemingly been trying to model on them and while there are other similar artists, Lights comes to mind, there isn't one quite like them really killing it in the popularity stakes. The Mother We Share getting top 40 was sadly one of the few instances where this threatened to become popular. However, this type of music is so popular here that it's managed to translate to a big ROTD success and it's another top 10 I'm so pleased for.

(oh and if we're counting these things, this is now the highest former BJSC entry, congrats Hendinia)

Posted by: Iz~ 14th September 2016, 01:51 PM

7 39 2006 Shakira (feat. Wyclef Jean) - Hips Don't Lie 530 ( 29 - 152 - 113 - 92 - 67 - 73 - 87 - 68 - 39 - 7 )

The final song that won't be here next year, meaning we have only one place in the top 10 opening up freely next time, but it's an incredibly fulfilling goodbye for Shakira fans as her last great hope in this game goes out with what is by far its highest position ever. You look at that and you mostly see underperformances and positions I wouldn't really expect for one of the biggest songs of the year done by an internationally famous female popstar to have had to settle for. Thankfully, as it is a great pop song, although this year I gave it a few less points that I feel I normally do, it doesn't spend its last try messing about and just kept gaining points after a slow start, enough to get well into the top 10. Bye Shakira, we will miss you. Most of us. I hear this particular song is one of the great #JJ disagreements.

And, Wyclef, you've done your comparatively unusual country of Haiti a great service, you are our highest credited male, this year. Only girls from hereon. Oh, and while we're talking about nationalities, Shakira is the highest artist not from North America or Europe. As you'd probably expect when you consider that almost all entrants into our charts come from those two continents but facts are facts. In fact what was probably more pertinent was that CHVRCHES are the highest British act. After I went on about them saving British music. Yay.

Just caught up on everything! Pleasing to see the big rises for 'Misery Business', 'Video Games', 'Somebody That I Used To Know', 'Little Talks' and 'The Mother We Share' among others!

I'm surprised that this is 'Hips Don't Lie's first year top 10 ohmy.gif Very pleased that it got there in the nick of time! <3

Gaga to win *.*

6 54 2008 Rihanna - Disturbia 536 ( 44 - 13 - 35 - 63 - 85 - 33 - 54 - 6 )

Yes, this being the highest Rihanna song has confused a lot of people. It's confused me a bit too, although it is just under a top score away from Umbrella. Out of the options I'd actually call it my pick these days, I don't listen to nearly as much Rihanna now as I used to but Disturbia, with an attempted lean on dark pop and a thundering beat has always been towards the top of my favourites from her and it holds up even now for me. It makes the fifth straight new entry into the top 10 and we haven't even gotten to the 2015 song yet. But that's a great place for it to be after it's spent many years trundling through different places in the top 100, missing the final a couple of times, it normally is the song to win 2008 so it must have given way for something else there, which was, if I look at ROTD history, Hot N Cold, which is right at the other end of the final this time. See, things can change a lot. I've probably said that too many times to count in this results commentary.

Still, while the bottom half of the top 10 is all songs getting a chance at top 10 stardom for the first time, the top 5 is more filled with stalwarts and predicted stalwarts, how will they fare?

Posted by: Jade 14th September 2016, 02:01 PM

Big leap for 'Disturbia' ohmy.gif I totally get it though - it is my third favourite Rihanna song after 'Rehab' and 'SOS'.

Posted by: Iz~ 14th September 2016, 02:11 PM

5 NE 2015 Carly Rae Jepsen - Run Away With Me 543 ( 5 )

How Run Away With Me captivated Buzzjack is probably a story for the epics to tell in the future. It is a song that wasn't a hit, while several in this top 10 weren't particularly big hits, they all at least reached the UK top 40 aside from this one. I actually speculate it was the injustice that this incredible song, coming quickly after Carly Rae made herself from the girl only known for the Call Me Maybe song to a girl known for another silly pop song. This was the song that would get her on the radar as a SERIOUS POP ARTISTE, with her apparently amazing album Emotion. Anyway, Carly is a true Buzzjack fave now based on pretty much this song, so I'd just like to indulge you all in a bit of psychicIz from 2012 when I hosted Buzzjack's favourite artists:

QUOTE(Eyes @ Jul 29 2012, 10:01 PM) *
Just think, in 10 years time we could be saying all we have been about Britney about Carly Rae Jepsen. Stars of the future everyone. But for now, lets let Britney enjoy her second place, which I think was a bit more than anyone hoped for.

(I apologise Britney fans, I like her a lot more now than I did back then)

Oh and this really is a most excellent pop song isn't it? So listenable, so emotion-filled, so wistful, especially that gorgeous instrumentation. I'm actually going to double down on my predictive skills and predict that this WILL be a future ROTD winner. And Carly Rae WILL ascend to internet forum cult status. I think those look accurate, right guys?

Love this song

Posted by: SevenSeize 14th September 2016, 02:14 PM

Run Away With Me for future winner please!

Tough to call a winner this time around, i'd say it's between Gaga and Loreen though i guess you can never rule out Robyn (and infact i wouldn't be surprised if Dancing On My Own ended up being the higher of the two!)

Posted by: Iz~ 14th September 2016, 02:28 PM

4 3 2012 Loreen - Euphoria 569 ( 4 - 6 - 3 - 4 )

Record Of The Decade continues to be the one possible competition on Buzzjack that Loreen has not won with Euphoria even as it racks up a 4th straight year in the top 6, showing no signs of a sudden dropoff as her win drops further and further behind. This sort of thing never happened to Heroes (which is a GOOD thing), and while the other recent Eurovision winners have seen mild success here it's nothing compared to this pop masterpiece. If you weren't here in 2012, just imagine for a moment that the whole board, in nearly every forum imaginable was focused on building shrines to Loreen and this song and making sure people heard it and weren't judging it as a Eurovision song but as a normal song (which doesn't make much sense to me, most Eurovision songs are BETTER than normal *.*). Such was its prevalence that people would make a living out of pretending to hate it and saying that it was overrated. Which is perfectly fair, hype can kill a song, but still, there were more people excited about it crossing into the mainstream, I would love an experience like that with a song again because it was one of a kind.

Basically that and it being a Eurovision winner that the buying public actually liked enough to let it semi-transfer into a life outside the contest has kept it a dominator of 2012 and always something in contention for ROTD. Unlike with Run Away With Me, I'm not sure it'll ever quite manage up enough support across the board to win the whole thing but it's well deserving of this fourth place.

Posted by: Iz~ 14th September 2016, 02:35 PM

3 1 2007 Robyn & Kleerup - With Every Heartbeat 587 ( 33 - 125 - 7 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 7 - 1 - 3 )

So last year's winner drops to 3rd place, at the same time sadly killing the 1, 2, Seven run it had kept up beautifully for six years. One of only two songs to win ROTD since 2009, it looked the stronger contender throughout most of this but got overtaken by the two ahead as the last few voters filed in. Actually, so many people were giving points to all three of the top 3 that it was hard for any to get an advantage over the other.

With Every Heartbeat has stood out as a favourite for us for a long while now, I'm not sure what happened in the first couple of years but it's never left our love since with high points from all over the alt-pop/dance spectrum. Because With Every Heartbeat is a song that appeals well to all comers, it has interesting and pronounced vocals from Robyn and a foreboding and rich production from Kleerup complementing that all through the song, it's just so perfectly produced it'd be hard to think of something in the pop world that beats it for raw ingenuity as a song.

(okay Kleerup is technically a male but he wasn't even named on my spreadsheet when I copied this in, does that sort of thing count)

Well, both of the top 2 got well over 600 points. Has Gaga reclaimed her crown for a 5th total year at the top or has Robyn replaced Robyn with her 2010 offering Dancing On My Own?

Posted by: danG 14th September 2016, 02:44 PM

Dancing On My Own overtaking With Every Heartbeat ohmy.gif

Well I can't really be that surprised considering the DOMO cover has brought a new appreciation for the original for many (including myself).

With Every Heartbeat and Euphoria remain lush though, glad those are still doing well in this.

Expecting a Bad Romance win here but it could be close.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 14th September 2016, 03:04 PM

I'm surprised Loreen still has enough support to be top 5 on this, although maybe that's because I don't hear it AT ALL outside of this website and even then I see it mentioned less and less on here. Run Away With Me I expected higher, but quite sure it will be a future winner on this. Very strong pop song, even if I was never quite in on all the mass looning.

Dancing on my Own winning would feel wonderful given it got cruelly massacred by Calum Scott this year wub.gif Pretty sure it'll be Gaga though~

Posted by: Iz~ 14th September 2016, 03:06 PM

2 6 2009 Lady Gaga - Bad Romance 623 ( 1 - 1 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 6 - 2 )

It was a short-lived fall to #6 last year as Bad Romance makes 2015 the only year so far it hasn't appeared in the top 2, but it can't quite reclaim its crown. Instead, it finishes 19 points behind Dancing On My Own. Which is a lot better than it was doing at the end of the first week of voting, it was somewhere in the depths of the pack. It is a song that tends to get more points from later voters but over 400 of those points appeared in the second half of the voting. Which meant I was quite comfortable in it not getting yet another victory before it raced upwards at an alarming rate, I always forget it's capable of doing this.

Why has it consistently done so well? Well, Gaga, but Bad Romance is on another level for most people, I can see why, it's not my favourite of hers and like, the only reason I tend to root against it winning is that for the level of song it is to me, that many victories is excessive. But not to lots of people, it had so many 40s and 39s that when it need the points it was racing up. See it has the quality that makes it very likely that anyone who calls themselves a pop fan will love what is on offer here, a big tribute to a knowingly bad and crazy relationship. And the longest Gaga has gone without winning. Still three more available though, I won't be counting this one out of the race until 2020 (imagine if I'm still running this in 2020).

1 7 2010 Robyn - Dancing On My Own 642 ( 20 - 7 - 10 - 15 - 7 - 1 )

Is this the biggest f*** you to the soulless Calum Scott cover you can imagine? I don't know, it certainly makes it a thematically appropriate winner this year. Dancing On My Own has always been popular here but it is only this year that's given it the extra push to reach top 5 and win, spending every year in the top 20 but otherwise only just making it into the top 10 when possible (and actually a look at this run has made me realise that this is probably the first year in a long while that Robyn hasn't been at #7. And I'm really glad, it's won that is. It's, for one, a winner that isn't Bad Romance or With Every Heartbeat, after 6 years of those two, and, out of those three, I think it's my favourite. The cover definitely inspired some people to go back and listen again to the original and give it more exposure as a song because it's so wonderfully written that at least the cover is doing that.

The lyrics work way better with Robyn's involved method of singing them and with that I can really feel the sense of loneliness and desperation in the song. Something that speaks to me. Again, like with With Every Heartbeat, the production that accompanies Robyn's words adds to those lyrics and gives you a complete package of a song. I'm going to go on record and say that this is the best win I've seen ROTD do since I've started running it. Two years of Robyn domination may not sit well with everyone but this time, we've let some of the older songs give way to the first winner released during the 2010s. And because I'm always after excitement and new winners shaking the status quo up, I like it.

Posted by: danG 14th September 2016, 03:12 PM

wow, great to have a new winner finally after all these years, and Dancing On My Own definitely deserves it as it's been so popular on this forum this year especially.

I wonder whether it would have been #1 if Calum Scott had not released his cover

omg Robyn's rotd stranglehold reaches a whole new level

(don't suppose this means i have to partly thank Calum Scott for his dancing on my errrrn cover version? i guess~)

Mostly a great Top 5! (granted i'm not a Euphoria stan really but at least i understand why it'll be a contender every year), seeing CHVRCHES & Of Monsters and Men in the Top 10 is a definite highlight of this 2016 round though <333

And of course a big loud THANK YOU to my dear boy Izzy, always appreciate your hard work on this thing wub.gif

Shit winner as ever when Robyn wins. Such an irritating voice that I will never understand, genuinely prefer Calum's version.

A shame that Carly couldn't do it, I was really rooting for her and then subsequently Gaga. AND WHAT @ CHVRCHES. May I remind you, you let me finish 5th with that BJSC entry and now it's nearly top 5 in your favourite songs of the DECADE. Go them though, what a surprise <3.

Top 10 Prediction:
1. Robyn - Dancing On My Own
2. Loreen - Euphoria
3. Robyn - With Every Heartbeat
4. Lady Gaga - Bad Romance
5. Carly Rae Jepsen - Run Away With Me
6. Of Monsters And Men - Little Talks
7. Shakira (feat. Wyclef Jean) - Hips Don't Lie
8. Katy B - Crying For No Reason
9. Rihanna - Disturbia
10. CHVRCHES - The Mother We Share

So got Robyn (x2), Carly and Shakira right, nearly all the odd numbers!

Fabulous to see Carly debut top 10 and RiRi/OMAM top 10 wub.gif

here's a Spotify playlist of the results if anyone's interested! All the songs are there except Taylor Swift's cos she's a bitch which have been replaced by fake versions

*.* that jinxing. Great winner, as you say, very appropriate for this year definitely and a really wonderful, emotional song, reassuring to know that this is a place that knows which version is better biggrin.gif (The Youtube comments for that though :/)

Thank you as always for all your hard work and commitment for this, Iz <3 (srsly I would've got so bored of running this by now had I been doing this as long as you so you are stronger than I laugh.gif)

Posted by: SevenSeize 14th September 2016, 03:29 PM

(p.s. is it too much to ask for Robyn Dethrones Herself Pt. 2 next year? 2017 will be With Every Heartbeat's final appearance so it needs that big send off biggrin.gif)

Posted by: RobBob 14th September 2016, 03:33 PM

I will add though, if either of the Robyn songs is to win, Dancing On My Own is definitely the better of the two. They're just both painfully somewhere between 6/10 and 4/10.

Omg slay Robyn Dancing On My Own is such a feel good pop song I do love Calums version too ngl heart.gif

Great to see Carly enter at top 5 such a well deserved placing heart.gif

I am so happy to see CHVRCHES, Rihanna and Of Monsters and men enter top 10 too cheer.gif

Amazing results though I wish Loreen had gotten the Top spot </3

does anyone know where to see the full results for 2006 - 2011?

I don't think the full results for those years were ever published, which is why I have Xs for some of the older songs. What I can give you is the links to the past results threads (and if I know they're all in here I can find them easily) which give top 200 results. http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=133211&st=240, http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=110748 and then http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=93213 contains 2006-2009.

You're all welcome guys, and thank you for the playlist Dan, I'll keep that for future reference.

Thank you so much for running this! It's definitely my favourite of the forum competitions. Pleasing to see a new winner and some surprise new faces in the top 10.

Posted by: blacksquare 14th September 2016, 10:48 PM

Dancing On My Own is one of the best pop songs ever. So wonderful and a deserved winner.

Now to erase Calum Scott from my memory~

Posted by: Jaÿ 17th September 2016, 09:28 AM

Firstly, thanks Iz for running this so successfully yet again; I really admire the extreme amount of hard work this must take! Always an enjoyable read (give or take the light GA shade x)

A very pleasing winner! wub.gif I much prefer Dancing On My Own to With Every Heartbeat these days, so I'm glad to see this handing over of the baton occurring. A glorious song!

I adore Bad Romance but admittedly I'd have found it boring if it'd won again, so runners up is great for that.

An obligatory "yaaaaas" for Carly making it into the Top 5! heart.gif Please can it win at some point in the future (how daunting does it sound that it has until 2025 to pull it off? Assuming this still takes place by then, of course. Iz to still be doing these threads in 2025 *_* cool2.gif )

Amazing to see Hips Don't Lie make it into the Top 10 in its final attempt. Very surprised by its chart run actually, given its status as a mid-2000s classic (or at least, that's how I feel it is regarded).

Rather shocked to see Disturbia place so highly this year, and even more shocked to see We Found Love plummet after its near win last year. sad.gif Please can it experience a turn around next time? It's the best song of the 2010s so far imo.

Glad GA managed to squeeze into the Top 20 with Call The Shots. With next year being its last shot (see what I did there~) can more people throw their weight behind this majestic pop song, pretty please? cry.gif

Dancing On My Own is one of my favourite songs ever so it's beautiful to see it take the crown here. I want her to see this somehow lmao. What a heartbreaking masterpiece <3

Yay for Gaga and particularly Carly for such a strong debut. Winner next year please ~

Posted by: Ðøßßø 17th September 2016, 12:11 PM

Thank the lord that awfully overrated Gaga track didn't win. I'm not huge on the Robyn song either really (With Every Heartbeat >>>) but that is far preferable at least.

Good to see Euphoria in 4th, definitely the only Buzzjack-mad song I can get on board with.

As for the rest of the top 10 really @ that awful Carly track debuting in 5th manson.gif mind you the 2nd highest new entry is even worse puke.gif

Disturbia so high is a pleasant surprise, definitely one of her more underrated hits.

And great to see CHVRCHES in the top 10. Not a fan of them in general but that song is really fantastic biggrin.gif

As always thanks for running this Iz!

Just want to chime in to say thanks for running this, Iz. It's been my first time following one and I enjoyed literally every round! A lot of work went into this and it was a real treat to watch the drama unfold. Much appreicated efforts!

Posted by: AaronTM 19th September 2016, 11:34 AM

Very pleased with that result! I always thought "Dancing On My Own" deserved to finish in the top 5 one year, so to win it is amazing!

Thank you Iz for hosting once again, I think this competition is one of my favourite things about Buzzjack - I find the history of it so interesting. I think next year I'll have probably been following this for 10 years, which is a bit of a weird thought.
