On Monday, former French president Nicolas Sarkozy said this: "If you want to become French, you speak French, you live like the French. We will no longer settle for integration that does not work, we will require assimilation."
He then went on, saying this: "Once you become French, your ancestors are the Gauls. 'I love France, I learned the history of France, I see myself as French', is what you must say." A few things here: first off, people who come from Martinique or Guadeloupe are not descended from the Gauls, and unless I'm mistaken they are most certainly French. Second off, assimilation is the second phase of colonisation, coming after conquest and before pacification. Third off, I would like to point out this idiot has an Hungarian father, and Hungarians aren't descended from Gauls. Although this isn't worthy of its own thread, it's an interesting topic to discuss, so I'll start the topic for the upcoming presidential election now. |

The upcoming French presidential election is going to be worrying one if you're of a more liberal bent (and even if you're of a cozy centrist disposition like myself). It's almost guaranteed that the Socalists & Hollande are going to lose the office as a result of general dissatisfaction with his leadership, coupled with the horrific terrorist attacks that have affected France in the past 12 months. The worrying part is that that means the run-off is likely to be a two-way contest between Le Pen's National Front & The Republicans (Sarkozy's Party). The National Front is a far-right, anti-immigration party (which has tried to detoxify itself with some success), and if Sarkozy's rhetoric and headline grabbing policies are anything to go by, he is going to be taking his party further into the right, very far in some cases.

The last report I read suggested that Sarkozy would not win the primary to be the centre-right candidate. Of course, that doesn't mean the actual candidate will be any better.

 I don't know whether he is really that stupid or pretending to be. Either way, the actual cost of one pain au chocolat is of 1 euro. |

With Brexit 4 months ago, and Trump now, I fear Le Pen could win the election.
At this point, I can only hope she makes good of her promise for an EU referendum in France and loses, leading to a resignation. That looks like the best-case scenario right now. |

With Brexit 4 months ago, and Trump now, I fear Le Pen could win the election.
At this point, I can only hope she makes good of her promise for an EU referendum in France and loses, leading to a resignation. That looks like the best-case scenario right now. |

One difference here is that Juppé is *very* popular. So having said that he's bound to collapse in the polls for some reason or another in the next few months, because 2016.

Juppé seems to be one of the better politicians within the Republican party so if he's up against Le Pen in the second round (which I'm sure he will be) then I hope the Socialists get behind him to keep Le Pen away from the Élysée Palace. The thought of her or any FN politician getting anywhere near that level of power is frightening.
She will do VERY well in the election though, especially given the current environment in France. She did well back in 2012 and the FN have done well (with the popular vote) in the Regional and Departmental elections since. It'll be interesting to see if the Socialists nominate Hollande for a second term. He was a good choice for 2012 (I like Aubrey but I don't think she'd have won against Sarkozy) but he has struggled a lot in his first term. Ideally Valls would win the nomination but it doesn't really matter as I can't see any of them beating Le Pen in the first round. (I still want Ségo as President but it's never gonna happen )

In a somewhat surprising developpement, Franēois Fillon is actually ahead in the Republican primary, winning 44% of the vote, while Alain Juppé won 28%, meaning they'll face off in the final round. Which means that Sarkozy is out!

And Franēois Fillon is the centre right candidate. Well, at least he isn't racist like Sarkozy, but that's about the best I can say about him.
He wants to return the work week to 39 hours (but paid 35 hours), to roll back certain adoption rights for gay couples, and is in favour of a burkini ban, aswell as deleting 500,000 public sector jobs (teachers, police officers, etc.). Oh, why couldn't Alain Juppé win? |
