I still can't get over Mr Blobby beating Take That to Christmas number one in 1993, that has to go down as the worst Christmas number one ever.

Mariah should be number one or Wham or any Christmas song, better than these novelty songs that people won’t remember in a month time...

Conversely I always tend to remember the novelty hits (assuming they're big hits in the first place). Wealdstone Raider & Lou Monte for example always get a spin on my Spotify every year
Interesting that before LadBaby that last novelty #1 was way back in 2000. So it is very rare for novelty songs to actually go all the way to the top. LadBaby just makes it look so easy. |

We should do a quick rate of these to find out Buzzjacks favourite Christmas number 1, everyone just giving their top 20 or top 10.

Some great sales in the singles and albums there the notable exception being Mr Blobby lol but he was a big Saturday night Noel Edmonds show star then so no surprising the single sold alright. Lol at ‘Mistletoe and Wine outsold Band Aid 2 in Xmas week in 1988/89!

And on her fifth week in the chart when she'd already sold 2m copies in the first 4 weeks. What an icon *.* |

1993 Mr. Blobby Mr. Blobby 92,500 2007 Leon Jackson When You Believe 275,742 2012 The Justice Collective He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother 269,248 Mad thinking that these 3 songs were at one point top of the biggest sales week of the year, but now aren't available digitally at all. Band Aid II appeared on Spotify for the first time this year - surely these would pick up enough streams to make it worthwhile for the rights owners? Don’t knock a future Christmas classic Walk This Sleigh is way better from Robbie Williams than his new Christmas song. I do have good memories of Walk This Sleigh despite it not being a UK hit as the chorus was used quite a bit as a soundbed in ITV's This Morning I think around Christmas in the early 00s. |
