Harry is the cover star of the first global issue of Rolling Stone!

Lots of interesting quotes to take from his interview. A selection:

Acting
“I think there’ll be a time again when I’ll crave it, but when you’re making music, something’s happening. It feels really creative, and it feeds stuff. A large part of acting is the doing-nothing, waiting thing. Which if that’s the worst part, then it’s a pretty good job. But I don’t find that section of it to be that fulfilling. I like doing it in the moment, but I don’t think I’ll do it a lot."

My Policeman
“So much of gay sex in film is two guys going at it & it kind of removes the tenderness from it. There will be I would imagine some people who watch it who were very much alive during this time when it was illegal to be gay & [we] want to show that its tender, loving & sensitive”
“I think everyone, including myself, has your own journey with figuring out sexuality & getting more comfortable with it. It’s not like ‘This is a gay story about these guys being gay.’ It’s about love and about wasted time to me”

Sexuality / Queerbaiting
“Sometimes people say, ‘You’ve only publicly been with women,’ and I don’t think I’ve publicly been with anyone. If someone takes a picture of you with someone, it doesn’t mean you’re choosing to have a public relationship or something.”

Harry's received quite a significant amount of backlash/mocking on social media and forums for his comments about gay sex in films, and honestly, I think the reaction is justified - at least regarding the core of the issue.

I don't think there's anything inheritantly wrong if a movie was to depict gay sex as "two guys going at it" because that is a completely valid part of the gay experience for many people. For him to kind of be dismissive of that and stress that gay sex is more accurately "tender and loving and sensitive.", like that's preferable, is not a great take. Gay sex is multifaceted; "going at it" doesn't have to imply there isn't love there.

Honestly, as someone who has watched a wide array of LGBTQ films, the more commercial ones tend to shy away from graphic or implied graphic scenes, more eager to show "tenderness" as Harry puts it... which I assume is to make it more palatable for a wide audience. I don't think his thoughts on the supposedly abundant graphic content in LGBTQ films is very well informed at all.

Another issue is with: To him, My Policeman is a very human story. “It’s not like ‘This is a gay story about these guys being gay.’ It’s about love and about wasted time to me.” because it's reflective of the awkward soundbites that actors before him have given in interviews when promoting an LGBT themed film - whereas these sentiments aren't ever expressed if it's a film focusing on a male and female story.

I'm sure Harry is well-intentioned, but yeah, it's kind of gone down like a lead balloon.

I found a few notable tweets that show off the backlash.

I'm not saying I agree with the sentiment of every tweet though (re: queer-baiting - I think it's very murky territory for anybody to insist that Harry is straight and profiting off the LGBT community by pretending to be otherwise. Yes he has a proclivity to be very vague, but it's his prerogative to not have to explicitly label/define himself).

^ This was taken to be an indirect response to Harry's comments.

I get the criticism of some of the comments but Twitter's very quick to misconstrue and read into things the way they want to. I've seen tweets directly referring to Harry as "heterosexual" which he's made very clear is not a label he relates to, and he makes a good point that his love life is actually mostly private. We don't know who Harry has and hasn't been with, so suggesting he has no right to comment on LGBTQ+ matters is unfair and very gatekeep-y in my view. He's not open about anything in his love life in the media. The "queerbaiting" accusations are yawnworthy for this reason too.
