BuzzJack Music Forum _ Rihanna _ Why did 'Right Now' flop?

Posted by: Andrew. 20th January 2018, 11:35 PM

Commercial and radio friendly. Trendy and hip (at the time) producer. Got to the top 40 as album track. Radio 1 playlisting. But it still only managed to peak at #97 when released as a single. Why did 'Right Now' flop in the UK and worldwide?

This is such a bop, yes it's generic as f*** but who cares tbh *.* I think a part of it flopping is that the washing machine (credits to Jade), standard dance-pop production was in decline by then (and has been virtually wiped out now). Also the low push although it really should've done better anyway.

cos she didn't do any promo for it, it probably would've been a hit (if only a minor one) if it got a music video and better airplay (it was B-listed on R1 if I remember though).

I really don't think she cares about this song at all. It was probably only recorded as a favour to Guerra for "Who's That Chick?". If she wanted it to be a hit, she would've made a video for it and promoted it - not that she promoted anything from that era after "Stay". It's a bop but so outdated even for 2012.

True. I think her team chose it as a single as a reaction to Pour It Up's underperformance in Europe but she couldn't be bothered with it :')

Yeah, I don't think she cared for the song in the first place. Did she even include it in any of her tour setlists?

And it was released in 2013 while it sounds like something that might've smashed in 2009/2010.

No promo, this was again the now return the favor with David Guetta that she decided to do

Because it's awful

I suppose no video would have been a big thing? It was very late in the album campaign when it got its official release and it didn't even really feel like a proper single release aside from the Radio 1 playlisting.

No video and no promotion doesn't help, but it wasn't great either. That sound was already over by the time the album came out, and then they waited half a year+ to even (barely) push it.
