Poor George Ezra losing a fifth week in the top 40 from streaming

New positive change record for Hozier. smile.gif

And he loses it this week, with a new sales peak of #6/official peak of #5, leaving Sam Smith back with the positive change record for I'm Not The Only One/Like I Can.

We do get a new record however for biggest difference between sales and official peak, with James Bay 'Scars' charting at #63 officially/#37 on sales, beating the old record set by CHVRCHES 'Get Away' (-23, #52 officially, #29 sales)

This week's updates:

+1
05 • 06 • Hozier ~ Take Me To Church

-2
07 • 05 • Tchami feat. Kaleem Taylor ~ Promesses

-4
39 • 35 • Echosmith ~ Cool Kids

Sorry I'm being thick then! What do you mean by sales peak?

You forgot to mark Tulisa and James Bay who aren't top 40 in green.

The peak it would have been if streaming didn't ruin the charts sorry I mean if it wasn't incorporated into the charts

Does anybody else think that Scars is going to climb and lose the negative change record next week? It's at #16 on iTunes.

Posted by: ‘brι! 12th January 2015, 05:09 PM

'Scars' was only released on Thursday so I would expect it to climb with 4 extra days of sales in its second week (much like 'Only One'). I expect it'll still fall short of the overall top 40 though.

Probably will, but maybe it will lose the negative difference record. I have a hard time believing that it's going to do like Only One and get an even larger difference between sales and official peaks!

Posted by: Taylor Jago 13th January 2015, 08:29 PM

Scars is at #32 on the Tuesday update. CHVRCHES, I think Get Away is getting the record back!

Posted by: Taylor Jago 18th January 2015, 07:07 PM

And Scars is #30 on sales alone but #48 overall. The negative difference record goes back to CHVRCHES "Get Away"

48 • 30 • James Bay ~ Scars

-20

43 • 21 • Kid Ink feat. Chris Brown ~ Hotel

Also, Hozier has been taken off the list with his #3 peak on both charts

Posted by: zenon 18th January 2015, 07:57 PM

Kid Ink just one place away from CHVRCHES' record!

Posted by: Taylor Jago 25th January 2015, 07:54 PM

And just one week after regaining the record, Only One by Nathan Grisdale is #37 on sales alone but #67 overall, breaking the record with a -30 difference, probably for good this time.

OUCH at Nathan Grisdale, although I've no idea how it even went sales top 40, where did its sales even come from? unsure.gif

Posted by: Dobbo 25th January 2015, 10:34 PM

I think it's only a matter of time before a song that goes top 40 on sales misses the top 75 combined.

Posted by: zenon 26th January 2015, 01:10 AM

Also with Kid Inc making number 21 on sales last week but yet only made 43 combined, we're now looking at the first top 20 sales entry not to make top 40 overall!

Kid Ink also re-entered the top 40 at #37 and is at #49 officially (12 place difference) but that won't be noted in the OP.

It should read 16 place difference.

We're also pretty much guaranteed a -20 difference for a top 40 sales entry to miss the overall one every week now. ohmy.gif

Not how it works - her peak would have been #2 on sales alone, yet her overall peak to date is #3. It's not a week-by-week comparison only.

(Rolls eyes) Honestly, I thought it was clear how it works: I was wrong. But seriously, Dan's already said it, it's difference between sales peak and official peak!

MNEK came pretty close there.

And I believe that's a new record of -40 (surpassing Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel)?

Yep, Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel "only" had a 33 place difference (which is noted in the OP but not officially part of the list as it still has its #1 peak from ages ago)

Posted by: zenon 23rd March 2015, 01:51 AM

Posted by: ► ▲ N 29th March 2015, 08:16 PM

This week's changes;

Chic narrowly escapes being the worst casualty of streaming, increasing its difference from -40 to -29. Also we get a new biggest difference for a top 5 sales hit, with 'Higher' peaking at #12 officially and #5 on sales. Pitbull increases his own lead as the biggest beneficiary of streaming for whatever reason, now having a difference of +4. Maroon 5 finally matches the #7 peak on sales so is taken off the list

this week's changes:

Major Lazer decrease their difference by 3, but a +7 lead is still very good (I imagine it'll decrease further as its sales increase). Pitbull finally catches up (nearly) on its sales peak, lowering its difference to just +1. Nick Jonas becomes the 2nd sales #1 to miss out officially, having a -1 difference (as did Union J). The fake version of 'Cheerleader' is unsurprisingly the worst affected by streaming this week, as it has a difference of -24 this week, the worst difference for a fake version ever. Bars & Melody hilariously get a difference of -23 for the second time, after 'Keep Smiling' which went to #52 (#29 on sales), and also coincidentally Kodaline match themselves too, with 'The One' changes its difference to -15, the same difference as 'Honest', although it is still climbing so it will probably change again next week. Poor 'Rumors' loses 9 positions this week, although that isn't the record for worst difference for a sales top 10 hit (that would be 'Beautiful Me' from last week which lost 10 positions).

Interesting that acts I would expect to benefit from streaming are not such as Disclosure and David Guetta.

Also I think launching pop bands is going to be harder than ever with streaming unless record companies can come up with a strategy to combat this - Recent examples of Conor, M.O etc 'flopping' despite being comftably in the Top 30 sales shows how tough it is.

Posted by: Dobbo 10th May 2015, 08:16 PM

Yeah agreed, also gonna be a lot harder for the likes of new talent show acts to start off as streaming definitely favours those with already big fanbases such as One Direction or Olly Murs so for those now starting in post-streaming era they could struggle.

Posted by: zenon 10th May 2015, 09:18 PM

Four tunes with at least -20 difference, shows how far streaming has come in only ten months.

Posted by: GTH 10th May 2015, 11:09 PM

Record labels seriously need to start releasing more songs on streaming services sooner to give them time to build up before official release. Certainly didn't do Magic, Meghan Trainor or Omi any real harm.

Britney's label need to get Pretty Girls on Spotify pronto, otherwise I worry it will have a similar (if not worse) chart run to Work Bitch when actually released here.

Just noticed George Ezra (Listen To The Man) appears to be missing on the list in the first post now.

Posted by: Danvicii 4th September 2015, 04:57 PM

this week gives a new record for most positions gained (3 by The Weeknd 'The Hills') and lost (36 by Katie Melua 'Wonderful Life'). And streaming also denies classic 'Tiny Dancer' from entering the top 40 but it finally gets a top 75 peak (it was never released as a single).

Didn't Trap Queen have a 10 place gain or something when it first entered?

Posted by: Dircadirca 4th September 2015, 07:12 PM

It did, but in the end, its overall sales peak was only 1 place lower than its chart peak, so The Weeknd has the record now, but could just as easily lose it if he picks up more on sales.

Posted by: Dobbo 4th September 2015, 07:22 PM

Ah I read it as most gained in a single week ever but then I remembered all the Xmas songs would surely have that distinction.

OUCH at Taylor Swift becoming the first act to miss the top 40 with a sales top 20 peak. We could definitely see this coming though as she still won't put her songs on Spotify.

Lean On got this accolade in its first week top 40! Although sales did of course catch up with that. I'd imagine 679 will enter the top 40 on sales before long anyway, particularly if airplay catches on!

Taylor Swift also had that with Style I think too.

How will you sum it once a record reaches a top 40 peak on sales but not top 100 overall?
