BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: Joe. 22nd October 2016, 10:41 AM

After defying all odds with their Sunday night release and storming to number 1 with the highest pure sales of the year, Little Mix are looking likely that they'll keep the number 1 and make it at least 2 weeks at the top with 'Shout Out To My Ex'. We're also looking at a possible high new entry from Clean Bandit as they join forces with Anne Marie and Sean Paul on 'Rockabye'.

At things in Q4 begin to heat up, in the albums chart, we have a battle between new releases from Lady Gaga with Joanne, Michael Buble and his latest Nobody But Me as well as Elvis and his new collection Wonder of You, with the latter two most likely to fight for the top spot. After a performance on Graham Norton, Kings of Leon should also sustain a strong week 2.

Breakdown of the week

Michael Buble, Elvis Presley and Lady Gaga to be Top 3 in Album chart update surely (as per other Prediction thread).

Most absurd New Album of the week has to be R Kelly's "12 Nights of Xmas"!

Not sure we will get a blanket Top 10 Album update of all new entries as Kings Of Leon will surely hold on and Sia may climb on the back of the Reissue.

Hope to see The Pretenders make an impression in Top 10 with new Album ( got some good promotion on "The One Show" last night ).

So I'm saying these albums will make the top 10- Elvis, Michael Buble, Lady GaGa, Leonard Cohen, Pretty Reckless, Korn, Jimmy Eats World, Melanie C, Status Quo. I also think the Lazurus soundtrack will do well but i'm not sure if that's going to be compliation charts.

Yes just waiting for the weekly whinge from Minty about the lack of Debut Albums

Posted by: The Hit Parade 22nd October 2016, 12:06 PM

I'm pretty sure the Lazarus album will be chart-eligible as a cast recording. It would be even more shocking if they didn't let that in after letting the Trolls album in.

Jimmy Eat World though? In a busy Q4 week?

Posted by: slowdown73 22nd October 2016, 01:20 PM

I'm not sure Gaga will be no1 album. I suspect either Buble or Elvis will make it. Neither are pretty inspiring though.

Yes, the opening post says that.

After the excitement of last week's race to the top for Little Mix no comments so far on the Singles Chart suggests not much to talk about this week,
Suspect the main questions will be: What will be the margin of victory for Little Mix? Where will Clean Bandit enter, in Top 10 ?
Who will gain most from an appearance on X Factor, John Legend, Busted or Shawn Mendes ?

Personally would like to see Kate Bush make some sort of impression on the Top 200 but unlikely to happen.

Suggest we get back to the unpredictability of the Album Chart...

Posted by: Jonjo 22nd October 2016, 01:52 PM

Fairly certain Elvis is gonna smash it out the park. I think he'll end up with a comfortable lead over Buble, I don't think it'll be as close as people will expect, either. Although, when does his BBC show air, come to think about it?

Both should do 50k+ easy though. Maybe higher, but we'll see.

Posted by: Jack 22nd October 2016, 01:53 PM

Elvis & Buble top two?! How depressing.

Posted by: ★Rob S~ 22nd October 2016, 02:01 PM

Considering John Legend was 80 with Love Me Now I'd assume he's in for a 50 place climb but I think Shawn will benefit more on iTunes personally what with it being 59p!

@tim's X Factor boost question.

Posted by: Rafael x 22nd October 2016, 04:37 PM

Mint on Twitter:

Gaga's going to be number 3 at best behind Buble and Elvis. I can see her actually falling out of the top 5 TBH.

Posted by: Addy K!ng 22nd October 2016, 04:43 PM

oh wow that's certainly not a good news for gaga fans

Mint is good for the facts, but take any predictions with a pinch of salt.

Posted by: leewallace 22nd October 2016, 04:50 PM

Guess had she performed on X Factor & Graham Norton, she could have been number one but I can see this album getting completely lost in the Christmas market and failing to recover.

Not sure when the Lady Gaga Carpool Karaoke will be broadcast but it has the potential to give her Album a real boost, will be surprised if she is not number 3 at the end of the week.

Posted by: shindymindy 22nd October 2016, 05:38 PM

According to Mint Royale, Gaga has sold 11,444 units and Buble and Elvis over 20,000 units each. Buble has sold more than double Gaga.

Not bad numbers for Gaga on her first day. Thats almost more than last week's #3 sold all week

expected numbers for gaga considering the bad reception

well I've been told he's always been a Gaga hater, so that's the main reason.

At least she is not doing as bad as Britney.

Comparing with how bad the others did it won't make Gaga situation any better tbh.

Posted by: Jonjo 22nd October 2016, 06:07 PM

Also, Gagas been a bigger album seller than Britney (bar BOMT album and I'm not sure what Gagas other album sales are tbh). So the point is irrelevant. Also, she's a lot "fresher" than Brit and is considered to be up there with Katy, Taylor, Rihanna etc.. when in reality she is nowhere near (at least for now - she's in a position where if she released one storming pop song she could be huge again)

But anyway, 11k is great for at this stage. I was thinking maybe 22k for the week, but I think that puts her on track for more, doesn't it? It's such a nice album that will hopefully grow on those who have listened already!

You're fighting him over his opinion? Why? Some of the replies to him are ludicrous. Why does he have an obligation to remain unbiased? He can say what he likes. He doesn't have to disclose any of the figures in the first place.

I'd like the album to do better than it's doing, as it's a gorgeous piece of work. It's a pity she's not going to see much commercial success in the U.K. with Joanne. At least it's smashing in the US. She's on to sell around 160k there, but that could well increase after SNL tonight.

Posted by: iain 22nd October 2016, 06:42 PM

God some people are just completely crazy aren't they? He doesn't like the album. There is no reason why he shouldn't state this. People need to get over the fact this is not going to do well in the UK.

I genuinely don't understand how Elvis Presley albums can continue to be so popular...? Wasn't there one just last year or something too??

Genuinely if someone could go into who is buying them that would be cool. Is it just older people forgetting they already have a copy of the last one?

This one and the other last year have different melodies as they're with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Obviously all different tracks to last year's release. Don't think just older people are buying them.

We should probably start seeing them climb iTunes by mid November once the John Lewis advert signals the start of the holiday season (who do we think will do the ad song this year? I can't see them getting another nobody in as last years one was a flop)

Posted by: Bjork 23rd October 2016, 09:35 AM

I wouldn't call it a total flop (did peak at #11 right?) but after Gabrielle Aplin and Lilly Allen both hit #1, it was a bit of an underperformance...

It dropped off the face of the charts afterwards though and I'd say that #11 was a bit bad considering the level of hype and advertisement the John Lewis ad songs receive.

Well firstly, your comment suggests that you think that Elvis only recorded a handful of songs in his life and that this album must therefore be essentially the same as last years.
Elvis recorded and released about 45 original albums in his career, and hundreds and hundreds of songs.
Last year's and this year's albums are tracks that have been recorded with a philharmonic orchestra, so they have quite a different sound to the original recordings of the songs.
These orchestral albums could literally be released every year until the 2050s without repeating songs.

As to why people are buying them-
Elvis is the most iconic, most popular and most successful solo artist in history... that has a lot to do with it.

CD albums are now Christmas presents more than anything else. About 20% of the UK's population (more than 10 million people) would have been teenagers when Elvis was alive, so for many people it would make an ideal Christmas present.

Add to that there are many millions of people in their 20's, 30's and 40's who also love or at least enjoy the music of Elvis, there's no reason why they wouldn't enjoy this album.

Radio 2 is the most listened to station in the UK by far, and they have heavily promoted and played both this and last year's album.

Finally, it's a simple fact that people like shiny new things, and casual music fans who have a passing interest in Elvis or want to 'discover' Elvis, are much more likely to go out and buy a new CD that is on the front shelves of shops, has radio play and tv adverts, than try to choose from 1000's of online Elvis track options or root through a CD shop for a random Elvis greatest hits from years ago.

Hope that's enough reasons as to why this album might sell a few hundred-thousand copies.

Posted by: skankhunt42 23rd October 2016, 10:10 AM

That makes sense tbh. I only get cds for presents now too with the exception of my fave fave who I didn't get.

Re John Lewis, the advert and song last year were pretty atrocious. Neither was popular and therefore both flopped. I think they will bring in a bigger name and with a better song and campaign.

That would mean her daily average (day 2 - day 7) is gonna be less than 2k?!

According to Mint Royale, Gaga has sold 11,444 units and Buble and Elvis over 20,000 units each. Buble has sold more than double Gaga.

Big sales week then.

Didn't Gaga sell something like 240,000 first week in 2011? ohmy.gif

Could be Birdy!

I can't see Sia singing a cover howevwr and is too busy with her album.

does anyone remember how much did Artpop sell on week 1? (thats the right comparison, not BTW)

It was 40 or 80 000 wasn't it? Oops, right in the middle: 65 000. 280 000 in US, then the week after ...

Not even Lady Gaga?

I'm only really interested in the albums chart but even then my faves fall quickly, dreading where Rebecca will end up. I have a casual interest in where Maroon 5 are in the singles but I'm not a huge fan of the song.

QUOTE(rundmck @ Oct 23 2016, 11:05 AM) *

Fair enough. I guess to me the music of Elvis has always sounded impossibly retro, and just really very different to what I understand music to be.

Of course he was an iconic musician, but an iconic musician from 50 years ago. Just feels like milking it a little.

But I guess he's become more than a person. Anyway. Don't want to get into debate over it or step on anybody's toes. Just thought it seemed odd initially.

Not quite sure how the same Christmas songs that have re-entered the chart for the last ten years would be making things *less* stale, TBH.

On the "older people"/Elvis thing, I suppose it might depend on what you think an older person is. I reckon I'm an older person by Buzzjack standards and even I was born after he died. For the record, I think the orchestral albums are rubbish, and the second one must be even worse than the first. But I'm listening to his first album even now.

The Elvis/RPO Albums are the best albums that he has released. Brings Elvis' sound bang up to date with innovative backings. The general public obviously love them as the previous album IICD was the second biggest seller after Adele last year.

Posted by: The Hit Parade 23rd October 2016, 10:01 PM

I'm not convinced that adding an orchestra is "up to date" but I can of course see that there's a market for it. In fact, it's possible that if they'd done it while Elvis was alive and had him singing over an orchestra it would have been quite good, but doing it posthumously just doesn't work for me. I heard a version of 'If I Can Dream' that was especially awful.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 24th October 2016, 02:44 AM

Id rather Buble number 1 than Elvis so i hope Buble does it.

Really hope Mel C can stay top 20 at the worst, her last 2 album i think missed the top 40 so this would be a nice turnaround for a great album.

To give her credit, she's doing good numbers. On another week the could have been number 1. Just not against Buble and Elvis.

this means Gaga is doing good! Just like I predicted, she will definitely sell at least 30k.

Can KoL go top 40 this week? (The single)

Posted by: Bjork 24th October 2016, 11:15 AM

from the sun.co.uk

His new posthumous LP, The Wonder Of You: Elvis Presley With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, has unexpectedly leapfrogged MICHAEL BUBLE and LADY GAGA in the race for this week’s No1.

If it holds on then he will defeat MADONNA to become the solo star with the most No1 UK albums ever — bagging 13 in chart-toppers in total.
He and MADGE are currently neck and neck on 12.

While Michael Buble’s Nobody But You was tipped for the top after huge pre-orders, Elvis has now soared ahead by more than 2,000 copies.

Posted by: danG 24th October 2016, 11:36 AM

Would be very impressive for Elvis to get another #1 album this far into his career, and beating Michael Bublé in the process who most of us thought would be a certain #1 ohmy.gif

Gaga is coming from an underperforming era (ARTPOP) and the UK is very promo-sensitive - she didn't do any major promo (cancelled The X Factor & Graham Norton). Also the sales climate is quite down, so these numbers are not surprising at all.

Posted by: dandy* 24th October 2016, 07:16 PM

To be honest, given the total disinterest in the lead single, Gaga is doing way better than I would have expected. I thought about 17K for the whole week tbh.

Posted by: pippa 24th October 2016, 07:31 PM

I do not want another Elvis Presley number 1, i do believe Michael Buble can overtake as the week progresses. Good start for Melanie C and witH Lady Gaga i dont yet know if i think she is doing well or under-performing.

Thrilled to see the wonderful Little Mix on course for a second week at number 1.

Posted by: gooddelta 24th October 2016, 07:46 PM

Sexual is a really interesting hit, it feels like classic Scandipop blog pop to me so it's interesting to see it taking off so much here. It hasn't really even smashed back in its native Sweden (low top 40 I think).

Makes me think that record companies should be picking up more of this blog pop with big choruses that never really ever makes it off the blogs.

Britney hasn't been playlisted on Radio 1 since Hold It Against Me, that's more than 8 years! Gaga can be happy for being playlisted.

If Elvis does get to Number 1 in the Album Chart it will be the fourth posthumous number 1 of the year (3 is all ready the most ever for a year, David Bowie x2 and Viola Beach all ready).
Personally I think it was a massive shame that Prince didn't make it to the top this year after his death - another compilation ("4Ever") is due at the end of November but unlikely to make it to top as a fairly competitive week (The Weeknd & Kate Bush).

It's Beyoncé's fault Prince didn't get a posthumous #1 album and a shame that Kideko dropped out. I hope he re-enters on Friday as he's at #22 on iTunes and #51 on Spotify

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 25th October 2016, 10:31 PM

I had hoped Buble would have closed in on Elvis not fall back, Elvis looks likely to be def number 1 now. Buble Christmas album on track for making another top 20 return, the album just manages to do well year on year.

Great to see Mel C top 15 again, top 20 still looks a real possibility now.

Posted by: liamk97 25th October 2016, 10:35 PM

Maybe more data was missing from the Monday update than usual or it's just because Christmas is on the way, but the rate that albums are selling, the likes of Mel C and the new entries surrounding her will be very lucky to stay Top 20. Shawn Mendes is even on track to return to the Top 15!

Posted by: BrookeOlivia 25th October 2016, 10:43 PM

Them sales for Little Mix wub.gif excited to see the total by the end of the week, Fact still as 55% lead on iTunes and #1 on Spotify I think could have another 2 weeks or so at #1 yet.

Posted by: raphaelalm 25th October 2016, 10:45 PM

I think Shout Out To My Ex will sold more than 100k copies this week. Amazing!

Posted by: Steve201 25th October 2016, 10:51 PM

Christmas by Buble mud be taking advantage of the new album being released - usually doesn't enter the top 20 for another month - both albums by him could do very well this December on the back of each other!

QUOTE(rundmck @ Oct 23 2016, 11:05 AM) *

Fantastic post! dance.gif

So after months and months of dire sales we now have the Top 3 albums selling 100k already. I wish these releases were spread out - appreciate artists and record companies want to go for Q4 but it's frustrating to have albums selling 15k go to #1 and now albums selling 40k+ not coming close.

she really shows she can sing, makes you feel a bit sad she's not making songs like Bad Romance or Pokerface anymore but the two newies sound good too, especially the final Million Reasons

It seems like she's testing the waters with both Million Reasons and A-Yo at the moment. The former is more likely to be a hit though i think.

A-YO is confirmed as the next US single (radio adds Nov 1st). Hopefully they'll release MR in the UK, it's already getting a significant boost from Carpool Karaoke.

I was kinda thinking Fake love could go top 40, considering the streams he's had today (>220k) x 3-4 days, thats gonna be sure >10,000 sales... and sure he can get 5K more from downloads in 4 days since Fake Love is top 10... think 15K is enough for top 40 these days...

Yes, it was the first sign of Madness this year (from OCC).

The Nutty Boys are on "The One Show" tonight - presumably performing "Mr Apples", hope it gets a boost although they have done a lot of shows (eg Strictly, Jools Holland) without much impact.

I kinda understand the Trolls situation, it's cos all the songs are sung by the cast of the movie (Justin, Anna, Gwen,...), so it could be credited as "Cast of Trolls"... it's not like a regular movie soundtrack that includes random songs from random artists unlinked to the movie...

but yep, same thing could be said about Frozen, since the cast of Frozen (Idina and co) sing all the songs... with the exception of the Demi Lovato version of Let t Go, which was the lead single, maybe thats why it got excluded?

Unlikely to get in Top 20 but still shaping up to be her third highest peaking Album (out of 7).
I was a little surprised to see she had a previous Studio Album that peaked as low as 57.

Posted by: pippa 27th October 2016, 03:02 PM

Its a big turnaround in position but i would also think she will outsell opening sales of her last 2 albums.

Posted by: Bjork 27th October 2016, 03:08 PM

her last three albums (This Time, The Sea, Stages) all missed the top 40. The Sea was ok and got very good reviews but the other two were terrible (and Im a fan). This Time was preceded by a cover pf I Want Candy (enough said)... and Stages was an album of covers of songs from musicals I think...

Posted by: pippa 27th October 2016, 03:44 PM

Beautiful Intentions was Mel's last strong album in my opinion, i did not enjoy Stages at all. I purchased Version of Me and have yet to listen to it properly but from a quick listen it seems a good album.

Posted by: Jonjo 27th October 2016, 10:12 PM

'The Sea' is her best album for 'Burn' alone tbh.

Posted by: andeeeeyhart 28th October 2016, 12:07 AM

I thought This Time was a lot better than Beautiful Intentions. The Sea was average, and I didn't bother with Stages.

Posted by: ___∆___ 28th October 2016, 12:51 AM

Would love Mel C to stay Top 20 as she hasn't done so since 2003. But I guess despite a low sales climate the fact she's returning to the Top 40 at all is a huge achievement in itself as her last 3 albums peaked at #57, #45 and #50!
