BuzzJack Music Forum _ Forum News and Help _ Forum Lag Time

Posted by: ⓐⓦⓐⓡ^ 5th September 2017, 04:58 PM

I believe that the forum has been lagging a bit more of late. It can take ages for pages to load and I've noticed a number of instances of double-posting which is often caused by someone clicking the "Post New Reply" tab due to delays in pages loading. dry.gif

I know there's nothing much that can be done, but I'm curious to know if others are experiencing similar issues on the forum at present?

Posted by: Separate 5th September 2017, 05:28 PM

I get it sometimes but I think it's just my internet.

Posted by: Phil 5th September 2017, 08:45 PM

Clear the Buzzjack cache on your browser, and it should be as fast as ever again.

Posted by: ⓐⓦⓐⓡ^ 5th September 2017, 09:12 PM

It's an intermittent issue browsing from my iPad. Haven't noticed it yet using my phone for example.

I'll try and do what you suggested mdh. happy.gif

Posted by: cqmerqn 5th September 2017, 10:10 PM

That sounds like a connection issue

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 5th September 2017, 10:46 PM

I don't have any issues on iPhone, iPad or MacBook. Unless my actual internet connection is bugging out so your internet connection might be the best place to start. Is it slow on other sites at the same time as buzzjack is lagging?

Nope, and a quick check on speedtest just now reveals this speed;

If you notice others double-posting on the forum that suggests that the page they were loading was lagging if they pressed reply twice.

Sometimes after I've marked forums as read by clicking the "NEW" button on the homepage and refresh the site they still display "NEW" even though there haven't been any posts since doing so.

The site has been briefly going down / seriously lagging more frequently than usual over the last few weeks (and it's not just my Internet, as it always affects other people I'm chatting to on Skype as well) - it's not a serious issue though, as it thus far hasn't ever lasted more than a few minutes at a time, just throwing in my two pennies that it's not just Wardy experiencing this.

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds 7th September 2017, 06:00 PM

Not lagging as such but the forum did go down for me for a few minutes this afternoon.

Yes! I've noticed it a few times over the past week or so.

Posted by: SGrey 17th April 2018, 06:27 PM

More so recently when I am using a laptop or computer, not so much when using my phone.

Buzzjack just wouldn’t load at all during the chart show last week for like 5 minutes. My wifi was fine and I even switched to 4G but every other website worked. Just not this one tongue.gif

Posted by: awardinary 20th April 2018, 10:19 PM

Pages are taking too long to load, and sometimes don’t load at all. The servers are really struggling lately. huh.gif

Some thing here, page took a while to load.

Lagging again for me, more LAG than redsox commenting on the UK singles chart this evening.

Posted by: Same Ol' Andrew 22nd April 2018, 09:15 PM

Went down twice in about twenty minutes and has been happening daily lately!

Posted by: Klaus 1st December 2019, 09:57 AM

Is it just me or are have others been having speed/connectivity issues over the past few days or so?

It's taking about 20-30 seconds to open a page on my phone (if that) and, whilst slightly quicker, isn't as fast as it should be on my laptop. This is on both wifi and 4G and every other website is working fine for me!

If it's just me, then consider this my leaving post because I can't put up with it x

Posted by: danG 1st December 2019, 10:00 AM

No it's definitely a server issue, it's being very slow for me too.

It has taken about 3 minutes on the tablet for the homepage to load. Couple of minutes for this page.

Posted by: Envoirment 1st December 2019, 09:56 PM

I'm glad it's a buzzjack issue as I thought it was something on my end! Just noticed the 2k+ guests has now decreased to 500-1k and the forum is loading a lot better. I wonder where that large number of guests is coming from?

Posted by: Philip 1st December 2019, 09:57 PM

yes apologies, it seems like the server is being inundated by requests which is putting pressure on some parts of the infrastructure. We are monitoring and will keep working on it.

Posted by: Medellíam 1st December 2019, 09:58 PM

Mine was taking a good 5 minutes to load but seems to be working perfectly now!

Posted by: Bré 1st December 2019, 10:07 PM

Looks like the number of guests viewing is rapidly rising again now but it doesn't seem to be causing the site to crawl to a halt again so I guess the temporary forced login is working.

Posted by: Mart!n 1st December 2019, 10:11 PM

I had problems loading as well it took at least 5 to 8 minutes to load up.

Actually this also happened a week ago as well, it was also a Friday, and there was a huge amount of guests online the date was 22/11/19, around the time the sales topic went up 6:15pm. I actually reported it last night, as it was acting strange, and gave JosephStyles and Suedehead a nod.

Do we have a permanent solution for this now then? Guest numbers have still been constantly over 1,000 but the site is working fine now.

Posted by: Dandy* Williams 3rd December 2019, 08:34 PM

Phil managed to clear some 'stuff' (my technical term) that was clogging the site and has managed to isolate some of the traffic - but the former worked in terms of sorting the slowness of the site.

He's still looking at it though to try and understand the guest numbers.

Is it just me or have the servers been really slow at peak times lately?

Posted by: Wall 26th May 2020, 09:27 PM

It’s awful right now

Posted by: Liam.k. 26th May 2020, 09:30 PM

Yeah everyone's been experiencing it. I thought it was just my internet connection tbh!

Posted by: Philip 26th May 2020, 10:24 PM

Thanks guys, what is slow browsing or posting? Also is it intermittent for the occasional few seconds or for long periods of time?

Posted by: Liam.k. 26th May 2020, 10:25 PM

All of sudden pages just won't load, usually when you've tried to post something. It lasts for about 5 minutes or so.

Posted by: awardinary 26th May 2020, 10:29 PM

Pages taking ages to load or simply not loading at all. I find in my case it is when browsing, but I’ve noticed it at times when I’m about to post, so I deliberately wait to avoid duplicating my posts.

Edit: Just to say, as I type this message right now everything appears ok, it just seems to happen at peak times for me during the evenings.

Posted by: JosephStyles 26th May 2020, 10:32 PM

It's happened a few times throughout today alone, normally I get it at least once a day at some point.

Posted by: Calum 29th May 2020, 07:14 PM

This has been awful for a while now (it happening last night reminded me to post in here). If I post a reply, or try to visit certain threads by clicking from the Index, the pages can be hanging for at least 3-5 mins.

Posted by: Philip 29th May 2020, 09:41 PM

I have just turned off site search to confirm or deny if this is the issue. If you experience the same slowness can you please post here to let me know. Thanks

Posted by: Bré 29th May 2020, 10:03 PM

I obviously don't know for sure but I kind of doubt that is the issue? I use the search feature a lot as part of my BJSC mod duties and it's never resulted in the site crashing.

Posted by: Philip 30th May 2020, 12:20 AM

Search will impact this? If so will turn back on tomorrow. Please pm me if you need it urgently.

Definitely the search slows the site, big searches more so. This will not be a problem on the new site.

Posted by: Philip 30th May 2020, 12:15 PM

OK switched the search back on. The new site will resolve this issue whatever the cause as we have a better search system and more powerful server.

Posted by: awardinary 30th May 2020, 08:12 PM

For the record, the last 2 evenings around this time (just after 9pm) pages have been taking longer to load, it isn’t a search function, just refreshing the homepage that is taking so long. I imagine it is the same for others too.

Posted by: Liam.k. 30th May 2020, 08:18 PM

I think Gaga's broken Buzzjack.

Posted by: Bré 30th May 2020, 08:44 PM

I don't know about everyone else but I'd rather just put up with the site lagging a couple of minutes per day than not be able to use the search feature and all the other things that rely on it, even if the issue is with the search engine. It's a bit annoying but it doesn't exactly make the site unusable.

(so yes, thanks Phil for turning that back on)

Posted by: Bré 26th February 2021, 10:14 PM

It went down for a while again after your post Phil - same issue again?

I was getting 'connection timed out' errors from these crashes which isn't usually the case (normally when the site is being slow it just hangs on pages and doesn't load new ones, but it doesn't give up and show errors).

Posted by: awardinary 23rd April 2022, 09:28 PM

It’s not that I’ve been having lag time recently as such, but just an observation I’ve made in more recent times is that having embedded links to Youtube videos, Spotify, Apple Music, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook really slows page loading times. I don’t want these features to be removed of course, but it’s having an effect on some pages in the forum.

Yes, this has been happening for me too (and I was also wondering if it might just be a Firefox thing). I'm pretty sure it has something to do with Spotify embeds - I've only noticed it happening on pages that contain them, but not every time so not sure what specifically causes the issue.

Had a 404 error appearing for a while today.

Same thing here, I had a 404 error as well.

Was the forum a bit slow about an hour ago? I’ve just finished work and had to delete a fair few duplicate posts in the Kylie and Madonna forums.

Posted by: Dobbo 10th July 2023, 01:40 PM

It's been on and off for me for weeks.

Two big lags for me today so far

Posted by: dandy* 22nd July 2023, 07:28 PM

Yeah this has been bad for me as well, there's been several times over the past 24 hours or so where the site has just refused to load simple pages.

Posted by: Brer 22nd July 2023, 11:54 PM

Is it possible the lag might be caused by mod activities in Artist Forums in particular? It seems to happen when people do mod stuff in there but I've never had it while doing mod stuff myself...

Whenever I’ve done mod duties in the Kylie AF, like deleting posts, it proper lags the site for 5 minutes. Only notice it happen on my laptop though.

Posted by: JSG 23rd August 2023, 06:41 AM

Well that was unusual. Buzzjack logged me out and I couldn't remember my password for the life of me. I was in the middle of commenting on charts and it just came up with an error message. Managed to reset my password through my laptop but I'm just wondering if anyone else came across this issue today.

Posted by: Tafty³³³ 22nd September 2023, 10:38 PM

Is Buzzjack laggy for anyone else today? Just had a good 3-5 minute spell.

Probably because I had to delete a post, website pretty much always freezes every time I carry out a mod function. drama.gif Sorry guys! laugh.gif

Every page seems to take a good 10-15 seconds to load for me the last few days. It's not my internet as no other website is having the same issues.

Posted by: Brer 24th September 2023, 12:33 PM

It's not like it all the time for me but I've also noticed occasional periods over the last few days where all pages take a few seconds to load (not quite 10-15 seconds I think, more like 5 seconds). Different to the usual lag pattern of the whole site going down for a couple of minutes every now and then but then being completely back to normal when it's back.

Posted by: Y'all Starlight 24th September 2023, 12:40 PM

Over the past few days the website has also been taking a very long time to load for me as well. Sometimes only a segment of the page will actually show up and i'll have to refresh to see the full page

Posted by: awardinary 24th September 2023, 12:46 PM

Out of curiosity, does anyone know exactly how many unique web pages that exist on www.buzzjack.com?

Web page loading for me after a minute a few times today.

PSA: if the forum is lagging and you've just submitted a post, please DON'T press "add reply" again, it will go through when the forum loads!!! It'll end up with double posts, triple posts or WORSE (the deletion of which could slow the forum down again, it's a vicious cycle x)

Well apparently there's over 266,000 threads, many of which will have multiple pages, and over 170,000 members who will each have their own profile page.

Posted by: Dobbo 25th September 2023, 04:27 PM

Horrendous lag for me all day today, sometimes taking well over a minute to load one page.

Posted by: Liam.k. 25th September 2023, 04:31 PM

^ Literally coming to say the same, a minute at best for each page to load.

Posted by: JosephStyles 25th September 2023, 04:39 PM

Yeah it's especially bad right now, and over 1700 guests viewing the site? mellow.gif

I have emailed Phil btw

Posted by: k👠th 25th September 2023, 04:42 PM

What is going on

Posted by: JSG 25th September 2023, 04:42 PM

Yes it's being incredibly slow to do anything just now. An absolute pain in the arse. Is there anyway that Phil could see if the number of members/pages etc... are causing issues on the site and delete accounts that have been inactive for a certain period of time?

Posted by: Brer 25th September 2023, 04:47 PM

I think it must be the number of 'guests' viewing the site, I've been watching the number each time I've been able to load the front page and it increases by a few dozen every time. Idk if setting the site to members only would fix that? x

Posted by: uhsting 25th September 2023, 04:50 PM

I have an inkling we are at the centre of a DDoS attack thinking.gif

Posted by: Brer 25th September 2023, 06:08 PM

Someone changed the rules to make that happen. We suspected that the unusually high number of guests was causing the issue. It seems to have rectified it for now.

Posted by: JosephStyles 25th September 2023, 06:25 PM

Yup I changed that in the hope it'll reduce the number of guests viewing

Posted by: Brer 25th September 2023, 06:34 PM

We're down to 1375 guests now after peaking over 1800 so it seems like it might have worked, unless it's just coincidentally dropping now anyway.

Posted by: Klaus 25th September 2023, 06:56 PM

There must be a thread somewhere that they’re targeting.

I remember we had like thousands of guests viewing the TV Forum Index years ago which slowed down the site and meant the thread has stayed quarantined in the Entertainment Mod Forum. RIP sad.gif

The TV Forum Index has almost 750,000 views laugh.gif

Posted by: Klaus 25th September 2023, 07:00 PM

I think the cursed thread is Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny - over 100,000 total views and 150 guests currently viewing

Probably more people than have seen the actual film ohmy.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles 25th September 2023, 07:06 PM

tearsmile.gif and a whole 4 replies, it must be that thread

Posted by: JosephStyles 25th September 2023, 07:14 PM

It's now in the entertainment mod lounge, I'll leave Buzzjack guest-only for a day or so just to monitor the situation though. Things seem to be working normally for me currently anyway!

Posted by: Brer 25th September 2023, 07:18 PM

Still getting a variable few seconds of lag but that feels instant compared to how it was for a couple of hours earlier, I will not take this for granted :')

Posted by: Riser 25th September 2023, 07:25 PM

Yes it is a noticeable improvement. We're currently at 1417 guests, I suppose they are being counted even if they're stuck on the login page? thinking.gif

Posted by: JSG 25th September 2023, 08:21 PM

Back up to over 1500 guests and the site has slowed down considerably again.

Posted by: Mart!n 25th September 2023, 08:33 PM

It still takes a bit of time to load the pages, it should be pretty instant though, so there must be an issue somewhere. I do find it a bit straining at times, and it was pretty awful earlier around between 5 pm to 6 pm ish

Posted by: JosephStyles 25th September 2023, 08:36 PM

It's about at the level it's been this weekend for me, slower than it should be but a lot better than earlier.

Not sure there's anything more I can do, it's up to Phil now!

Posted by: awardinary 26th September 2023, 05:37 AM

If the guests are mostly bots then I imagine from my limited knowledge that they are programmed to keep refreshing pages so that they don’t get kicked off the forum and forced to sign up. I think it’s still possible to view what pages guests are clicking on by viewing the online list, but the fact the numbers have stayed over 1,000 for a long time is still concerning. I’m not sure what it was a year ago, maybe the Wayback Machine can tell us for example this time last year;

https://web.archive.org/web/20221003081613/http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/

A snapshot from September 2022 suggests just over 200 guests online.

2021 has a similar figure for this time of year just over 200 and I imagine it’s a recurring theme for many years prior too.

Posted by: Iz 💀 26th September 2023, 10:26 AM

Had a look at what they were looking at, quite a number of guests were printing topics and searching. Spam attacks for sure when I searched up a few of the IP addresses.

I turned off guest searching for now because that's quite resource-intensive (and hey, if real guests want to search they can sign up) and banned a few IP ranges that were showing up constantly - I and the other admins can keep an eye on that activity and it should drop off if we continue doing that.

Posted by: Brer 26th September 2023, 11:11 AM

And as if by magic we're down to a mere 300 guests.

I spotted a guest 'printing a topic' in the online list the other day and honestly forgot that was even a feature on this site laugh.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles 26th September 2023, 03:30 PM

Nice job Iz! I've allowed guests to view the forum again and we can monitor from here on in.

Posted by: Jester 26th September 2023, 07:18 PM

Clicking the 'print this topic' button at the top of the page, shows a printable format in case you ever want to either actually put this forum on paper or save a page to a PDF by using Ctrl + P. Along with other entirely useful and well-used functions like 'track this topic' in case you want incessant email updates on whenever someone new posts to it.

In this case probably just another action done by the bots to put load on the server.

Like with the Indiana Jones movie thread (that we moved to the Entertainment Mod Lounge and STILL has guests viewing it somehow), a thread that just got targeted for some reason, perhaps SEO-related.

trouble is that the bots that are viewing it all have different IPs so it's harder to swat them unlike that huge botnet I banned earlier - if I notice any big patterns I'll take them out but a small load we can handle.

That happens with me too

Posted by: Brer 30th September 2023, 02:52 PM

Yes that still happens but that's a separate issue that's been going on for a lot longer (which I hypothesise is something to do with mod actions and more specifically artist forum mod actions but that's just speculation). I mean we seem to have eliminated the more recent issue of the site lagging constantly between every page load as opposed to just occasional periods of the site dying for a minute or two then going back to normal.

Posted by: Calvin Maxwell 30th September 2023, 08:21 PM

Posted by: Calvin Maxwell 1st October 2023, 04:47 PM

not me getting paranoid that my personal chart thread got locked because it was causing lag 😵‍💫

Posted by: Riser 7th October 2023, 03:28 AM

The "today's active topics" link is still not usable for guests even though the other restrictions have been lifted. Was that intentional or can it be changed?

Posted by: Brer 7th October 2023, 02:14 PM

I think that link uses the search feature (as does 'view new posts', which may or may not be the exact same thing)

Posted by: awardinary 21st October 2023, 01:21 PM

Finding some lag this afternoon but seems ok as I type this now with around 300 guests online. Not sure that’s the cause though.

Posted by: JosephStyles 21st October 2023, 01:23 PM

300 is about normal!

Posted by: awardinary 23rd April 2024, 10:28 PM

Is anyone else finding that links are loading slightly slower than usual, it’s not really a lagging issue as such, but maybe something causing delays to load graphics perhaps? thinking.gif It’s not terrible in that it’s disruptive, but there is a subtle extra second delay than usual to open all pages on the forum.

I've noticed that it now takes a while to load any thread or access the site.

Posted by: JosephBoone 24th April 2024, 06:02 AM

I noticed it yesterday too, seems okay this morning but obviously it's a bit quieter at this time in the morning. Shouldn't be graphics related because the page itself is taking time to load!
