I disagree with you and think Modern Talking's track is great! It isn't very cheesy compared to some of the other dance-pop to come later in the decade and has some interesting synths in it, which are a bit industrial sounding like Depeche Mode's 'It's Called A Heart'. I quite like that Peter Cetera song, despite it being very cheesy. I prefer 'If You Leave Me Now' though, for nostalgia reasons! A cafe I used to go to a lot when I was younger must have had it on their playlist there, as I heard it as background music there a few times! That Depeche Mode track definitely isn't one of their best tracks. Cry is great, very atmospheric. Thanks Snakey, though "cheese" isn't a dirty word for me I love Modern Talking records, at their best, and they remain catchy. I've often been tempted to enter You're My Heart You're My Soul into BJSC just to see how it does with a young audience who have never heard of it I think they come over as "cheese" due to the campy vocals & visuals, and hook in this case. I was always a fan of europop despite critics slagging it off, cos what do critics know, they slagged off Abba and I loved them from day one. I was right and they were wrong I love "If You Leave Me Now", just gorgeous that one. I like quite a few of their ballads, but Glory Of Love never quite convinced me to the same degree, though I obviously liked it enough to chart it I haven't heard that Depeche track in decades, one I never got round to buying, this period I need to review for Depeche tracks as they have faded in my mind, whereas 1981-84 are very fixed and firm, as is 1989-90. cheers! |

It's a first week on top for the Jam & Lewis Human League, their 7th chart-topper, while the Jam & Lewis Janet Jackson is up to 3, with Human and When I Think Of You respectively. It's Janet Jackson's 2nd top 5. Modern Talking follow-up a chart-topper with a second top 5 hit, Phil Fearon returns to the top 10 for the first time in 2 years with the Tony Etoria minor classic. The Stranglers are nicely inside the top 20 with a leap, followed by Depeche Mode, Prince and Jermaine Stewart inside the 30. Highest new entry is Eurythmics with a more funkrock anthemic style Thorn In My Side at 32, with The The's Heartland just behind. Bucks Fizz take the Stephen Stills oldie into the 40 with a mighty bound, while new entries lower down from Killing Joke, Frankie and Psychedelic Furs give a more indie feel to the chart. The Furs is a re-record of an oldie for a movie, I think, and Frankie are Trevor Horn-less, and it shows. Michael MacDonald is back with jolly tune that flopped - till 1987 - and the monster Communards "song of 1986" cover of Harold Melvin's Don't Leave Me This Way enters quite low. I'm in a minority in preferring the original over all other versions. 9 years on, Jean-Michel Jarre is back, with a chart-topper still 30 years in the future, OMD have a lovely new entry, Genesis mine Invisible Touch, and Bananarama release one of their less remembered singles. 1 ( 2 ) HUMAN Human League 2 ( 1 ) AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH Diana Ross 3 ( 6 ) WHEN I THINK OF YOU Janet Jackson 4 ( 12 ) BROTHER LOUIE Modern Talking 5 ( 5 ) BURN Doctor & The Medics 6 ( 7 ) PANIC The Smiths 7 ( 3 ) CRY Godley & Creme 8 ( 9 ) AIN’T NOTHIN’ GOING’ ON BUT THE RENT Gwen Guthrie 9 ( 4 ) OH PEOPLE Patti Labelle 10 ( 16 ) I CAN PROVE IT Phil Fearon & Galaxy 11 ( 14 ) THE WAY IT IS Bruce Hornsby & The Range 12 ( 18 ) BREAKING AWAY Jaki Graham 13 ( 13 ) CAN YOU FEEL THE FORCE (REMIX) The Real Thing 14 ( 25 ) I WANT TO WAKE UP WITH YOU Boris Gardiner 15 ( 10 ) SHOUT Lulu 16 ( 11 ) PAPA DON’T PREACH Madonna 17 ( 28 ) HAPPY TOGETHER Sophie & Peter Johnson 18 ( 20 ) DREAMTIME Daryl Hall 19 ( 15 ) I DIDN’T MEAN TO TURN YOU ON Robert Palmer 20 ( 51 ) NICE IN NICE The Stranglers 21 ( 8 ) WE WALKED IN LOVE Dollar 22 ( 34 ) DON’T WALK The Big Supreme 23 ( 36 ) CARVE YOU IN MARBLE Tim Finn 24 ( 17 ) CALLING ALL THE HEROES It Bites 25 ( 47 ) WE DON’T HAVE TO TAKE OUR CLOTHES OFF Jermaine Stewart 26 ( 49 ) A QUESTION OF TIME Depeche Mode 27 ( 40 ) GIRLS AND BOYS Prince 28 ( 19 ) FIND THE TIME Five Star 29 ( 38 ) NO MORE ‘I LOVE YOU’S A Lover Speaks 30 ( 24 ) (BANG ZOOM) LET’S GO GO The Real Roxanne with Hitman Howie T 31 ( 35 ) DANCING ON THE CEILING Lionel Richie 32 ( NEW ) THORN IN MY SIDE Eurythmics 33 ( 26 ) NEW BEGINNING (MAMBA SEYRA) Bucks Fizz 34 ( 69 ) LOVE THE ONE YOU’RE WITH Bucks Fizz 35 ( 37 ) YOUR WILDEST DREAMS The Moody Blues 36 ( 21 ) PRESS Paul McCartney 37 ( NEW ) HEARTLAND The The 38 ( 22 ) THE LADY IN RED Chris De Burgh 39 ( 45 ) YOU GIVE LOVE A BAD NAME Bon Jovi 40 ( 31 ) CAMOUFLAGE Stan Ridgway 41 ( 30 ) HIGHER LOVE Stevie Winwood 42 ( 41 ) OPPORTUNITIES (LET’S MAKE LOTS OF MONEY) Pet Shop Boys 43 ( 43 ) A DIFFERENT CORNER George Michael 44 ( 27 ) AIN’T NOBODY EVER LOVED YOU Aretha Franklin 45 ( NEW ) ADORATIONS Killing Joke 46 ( 39 ) I CAN’T WAIT Nu Shooz 47 ( NEW ) SWEET FREEDOM Michael MacDonald 48 ( 32 ) WHAT’S THE COLOUR OF MONEY Hollywood Beyond 49 ( 57 ) EVERYDAY I WRITE THE BOOK Winston Reedy 50 ( NEW ) RAGE HARD Frankie Goes To Hollywood 51 ( 29 ) RED SKY Status Quo 52 ( 23 ) SOME CANDY TALKING Jesus & Mary Chain 53 ( 73 ) GLORY OF LOVE Peter Cetera 54 ( 75 ) TYPICAL MALE Tina Turner 55 ( 44 ) THE EDGE OF HEAVEN Wham! 56 ( 42 ) VENUS Bananarama 57 ( NEW ) DON’T LEAVE ME THIS WAY The Communards 58 ( 33 ) FALLIN’ IN LOVE (UH-UH) Miami Sound Machine featuring Gloria Estefan 59 ( NEW ) PRETTY IN PINK The Psychedelic Furs 60 ( 60 ) COME ON HOME Everything But The Girl 61 ( 64 ) (I JUST) DIED IN YOUR ARMS Cutting Crew 62 ( 67 ) ANYONE CAN FALL IN LOVE Anita Dobson 63 ( NEW ) FOURTH RENDEZVOUS Jean-Michel Jarre 64 ( 63 ) I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE Marvin Gaye 65 ( 65 ) E=MC2 Big Audio Dynamite 66 ( 46 ) ROSES Haywoode 67 ( 72 ) STUCK WITH YOU Huey Lewis & The News 68 ( NEW ) TWISTING THE NIGHT AWAY Sam Cooke 69 ( NEW ) FOREVER (LIVE AND DIE) OMD 70 ( 58 ) SOMEBODY Brilliant 71 ( 71 ) HOUNDS OF LOVE Kate Bush 72 ( NEW ) IN TOO DEEP Genesis 73 ( 66 ) VIENNA CALLING Falco 74 ( 50 ) PRIME TIME TV Basia 75 ( NEW ) MORE THAN PHYSICAL Bananarama Oldies 1 LOVE COMES QUICKLY Pet Shop Boys 2 BEHIND THE MASK Greg Phillinganes 3 SHOULD I LAUGH OR CRY Abba |

That's an awful #1!
(sorry) I love Human League but that is comfortably their most cringe worthy track... "While we were apart, I was human too..." |

The original version of Don't Leave Me This Way is very good too. There was another Hi-NRG version by Jeanie Tracy from 1985 which I discovered too recently, maybe The Communards heard this version and were inspired by this!
Seems like Hi-NRG/dance covers of old soul/pop songs were a bit of a trend in the late 80s anyway, first Venus, then Don't Leave Me This Way, then Never Can Say Goodbye and then finally The Only Way Is Up. The best part of the Communards version for me is the 'breakdown' bit just after the middle of the song, which has some interesting wobble bass effects before a rather housey-sounding piano part kicks in. The Communards version is a great energetic dance tune anyway I think, it was good that it and the equally energetic and fun (but of course more influential in the long run) dance track 'Love Can't Turn Around' were in the charts at the same time. Elsewhere in your chart 'The Way It Is' is a great if rather sad tune. Thorn In My Side is a great song too (I used to assume it was called something like 'Run Away From You' though! I prefer it to 'Must be An Angel' I think, but I still prefer the synthpop era Eurythmics. I agree with dandy* that Human while being a rather nice chilled song is rather cheesy, it goes too far down the path that would lead to the likes of Hue and Cry's 'Looking For Linda' (but 'Human' is nowhere near as cheesy as that thankfully)! Everyone loves that Communards record, and it was quite bold reversing the male and female roles vocally, probably a first, and yes House was a biggie that lives on I also prefer synth era Eurythmics, while the appeal of Human for me was the production and melody, which was just so lush. I quite liked the idea of taking a love song and making it one party confessing infidelity, only to find the other one had been too, and both regret it. That's not a cliche in pop music by any means, though the spoken words segment may come over a bit cheesy in a Sheffield accent Janet Jackson could easily have done a duet version that would have been acceptable in the 80's... |

I can see why it was so big in the charts at the time, it definitely stands out with its energy and fun from most of the chart at the time. |

It's Human League on top for a second week, presiding over a Jam & Lewis top 2, and a big pop week for me: the week I got on Radio 1 on Mike Read's Pop Quiz, backstage with The Real Thing, and the week I bought my first Now That's What I Call Music which boosted tracks in my chart which were on it. Highest new entry is the brilliant 20th anniversary of Eleanor Rigby (the reason for the high chart position, Yellow Submarine is for completion purposes only by that time, though I loved it as a kid), the Fabs keeping up with the reissues. Big climbs for Tina Turner, The Communards, The Psychedelic Furs, OMD and Cutting Crew into the 40, with big new tracks entering lower down: You Can Call Me Al, Paul Simon back with a biggie to signal classic Graceland; Chairmen Of The Board back with their first fab track in 13 years, having topped my chart in 1973; House arrives proper with Farley 'Jackmaster' Funk; Cameo do that much-covered future codpiece classic Word Up; Run DMC innovate a rap/rock combo with Aerosmith, and boost the 70's rockers back into fashion in the US, and chart success at last in the UK setting up the rest of the decade and the 90's; INXS' best early single, the fab Kiss The Dirt; and yet another 1976 disco remix from Tina Charles, which pretty much pushed me into overload saturation for the once-loved disco chart-topper, and I've yet to get back to it in the same way. 1 ( 1 ) HUMAN Human League 2 ( 3 ) WHEN I THINK OF YOU Janet Jackson 3 ( NEW ) ELEANOR RIGBY/ YELLOW SUBMARINE The Beatles 4 ( 4 ) BROTHER LOUIE Modern Talking 5 ( 2 ) AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH Diana Ross 6 ( 5 ) BURN Doctor & The Medics 7 ( 6 ) PANIC The Smiths 8 ( 14 ) I WANT TO WAKE UP WITH YOU Boris Gardiner 9 ( 12 ) BREAKING AWAY Jaki Graham 10 ( 8 ) AIN’T NOTHIN’ GOING’ ON BUT THE RENT Gwen Guthrie 11 ( 7 ) CRY Godley & Creme 12 ( 9 ) OH PEOPLE Patti Labelle 13 ( 18 ) DREAMTIME Daryl Hall 14 ( 25 ) WE DON’T HAVE TO TAKE OUR CLOTHES OFF Jermaine Stewart 15 ( 10 ) I CAN PROVE IT Phil Fearon & Galaxy 16 ( 20 ) NICE IN NICE The Stranglers 17 ( 11 ) THE WAY IT IS Bruce Hornsby & The Range 18 ( 13 ) CAN YOU FEEL THE FORCE (REMIX) The Real Thing 19 ( 23 ) CARVE YOU IN MARBLE Tim Finn 20 ( 22 ) DON’T WALK The Big Supreme 21 ( 15 ) SHOUT Lulu 22 ( 16 ) PAPA DON’T PREACH Madonna 23 ( 26 ) A QUESTION OF TIME Depeche Mode 24 ( 37 ) HEARTLAND The The 25 ( 32 ) THORN IN MY SIDE Eurythmics 26 ( 34 ) LOVE THE ONE YOU’RE WITH Bucks Fizz 27 ( 29 ) NO MORE ‘I LOVE YOU’S A Lover Speaks 28 ( 19 ) I DIDN’T MEAN TO TURN YOU ON Robert Palmer 29 ( 39 ) YOU GIVE LOVE A BAD NAME Bon Jovi 30 ( 54 ) TYPICAL MALE Tina Turner 31 ( 17 ) HAPPY TOGETHER Sophie & Peter Johnson 32 ( 57 ) DON’T LEAVE ME THIS WAY The Communards 33 ( 69 ) FOREVER (LIVE AND DIE) OMD 34 ( 27 ) GIRLS AND BOYS Prince 35 ( 53 ) GLORY OF LOVE Peter Cetera 36 ( 50 ) RAGE HARD Frankie Goes To Hollywood 37 ( 21 ) WE WALKED IN LOVE Dollar 38 ( 59 ) PRETTY IN PINK The Psychedelic Furs 39 ( 61 ) (I JUST) DIED IN YOUR ARMS Cutting Crew 40 ( 33 ) NEW BEGINNING (MAMBA SEYRA) Bucks Fizz 41 ( 24 ) CALLING ALL THE HEROES It Bites 42 ( 30 ) (BANG ZOOM) LET’S GO GO The Real Roxanne with Hitman Howie T 43 ( 45 ) ADORATIONS Killing Joke 44 ( 43 ) A DIFFERENT CORNER George Michael 45 ( 42 ) OPPORTUNITIES (LET’S MAKE LOTS OF MONEY) Pet Shop Boys 46 ( 36 ) PRESS Paul McCartney 47 ( 47 ) SWEET FREEDOM Michael MacDonald 48 ( 40 ) CAMOUFLAGE Stan Ridgway 49 ( NEW ) I LOVE TO LOVE (REMIX) Tina Charles 50 ( NEW ) WORD UP Cameo 51 ( 38 ) THE LADY IN RED Chris De Burgh 52 ( 28 ) FIND THE TIME Five Star 53 ( 46 ) I CAN’T WAIT Nu Shooz 54 ( 41 ) HIGHER LOVE Stevie Winwood 55 ( 31 ) DANCING ON THE CEILING Lionel Richie 56 ( 67 ) STUCK WITH YOU Huey Lewis & The News 57 ( 55 ) THE EDGE OF HEAVEN Wham! 58 ( NEW ) LOVE CAN’T TURN AROUND Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk 59 ( NEW ) YOU CAN CALL ME AL Paul Simon 60 ( 56 ) VENUS Bananarama 61 ( 35 ) YOUR WILDEST DREAMS The Moody Blues 62 ( 44 ) AIN’T NOBODY EVER LOVED YOU Aretha Franklin 63 ( 68 ) TWISTING THE NIGHT AWAY Sam Cooke 64 ( NEW ) LOVERBOY Chairmen Of The Board 65 ( 65 ) E=MC2 Big Audio Dynamite 66 ( 64 ) I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE Marvin Gaye 67 ( 72 ) IN TOO DEEP Genesis 68 ( 48 ) WHAT’S THE COLOUR OF MONEY Hollywood Beyond 69 ( 49 ) EVERYDAY I WRITE THE BOOK Winston Reedy 70 ( NEW ) KISS THE DIRT (FALLING DOWN THE MOUNTAIN) INXS 71 ( 60 ) COME ON HOME Everything But The Girl 72 ( 71 ) HOUNDS OF LOVE Kate Bush 73 ( NEW ) WALK THIS WAY Run DMC featuring Aerosmith 74 ( 75 ) MORE THAN PHYSICAL Bananarama 75 ( 52 ) SOME CANDY TALKING Jesus & Mary Chain PLAYIST OLDIES 1 I KNOW THERE’S SOMETHING GOING ON Frida 2 YOU JUST MAY BE THE ONE (ORIGINAL VERSION) The Monkees 3 BEHIND THE MASK Greg Philinganes |

3 weeks on top for Human, as my top 10 goes mad, with a massive leap for Killing Joke, far and away their biggest track for me, Adorations at 5, and INXS get a first top 10 with the fab Kiss The Dirt, up a whopping 64 places to 6. The Communards become the 3rd act to get a big hit out of Dont Leave Me This Way at 8, and highest new entry is the title track from Madonna's fab True Blue album, in at 9. Big climbs for Frankie, their 5th top 20, Bon Jovi get the first of a few top 20's, novelty Holiday Rap enters at 16 for some European rapping, Cameo go top 30, and Five Star's best and most charming record is in at 29, Rain Or Shine. Run DMC rock-et into the 40 helped by that fab video, and Farley takes House into the 40 too. The Ramones are back with some crummy stuff 8 years into their chart career, Amazulu cover Bobby Bloom, Pete Wylie is into diamonds, Elvis Costello makes it 9 years of chart success, Cyndi Lauper pops in with True Colors, not one of my faves of hers if I'm honest, Dead Or Alive make it 2 years and running, Falco makes it a hat trick of hits, and XTC are into grass, presumably having given up on making plans for Nigel after 7 years of trying. 1 ( 1 ) HUMAN Human League 2 ( 3 ) ELEANOR RIGBY/ YELLOW SUBMARINE The Beatles 3 ( 2 ) WHEN I THINK OF YOU Janet Jackson 4 ( 4 ) BROTHER LOUIE Modern Talking 5 ( 43 ) ADORATIONS Killing Joke 6 ( 70 ) KISS THE DIRT (FALLING DOWN THE MOUNTAIN) INXS 7 ( 14 ) WE DON’T HAVE TO TAKE OUR CLOTHES OFF Jermaine Stewart 8 ( 32 ) DON’T LEAVE ME THIS WAY The Communards 9 ( NEW ) TRUE BLUE Madonna 10 ( 5 ) AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH Diana Ross 11 ( 7 ) PANIC The Smiths 12 ( 36 ) RAGE HARD Frankie Goes To Hollywood 13 ( 20 ) DON’T WALK The Big Supreme 14 ( 6 ) BURN Doctor & The Medics 15 ( 29 ) YOU GIVE LOVE A BAD NAME Bon Jovi 16 ( NEW ) HOLIDAY RAP MC MIker G & Deejay Sven 17 ( 10 ) AIN’T NOTHIN’ GOING’ ON BUT THE RENT Gwen Guthrie 18 ( 9 ) BREAKING AWAY Jaki Graham 19 ( 24 ) HEARTLAND The The 20 ( 25 ) THORN IN MY SIDE Eurythmics 21 ( 11 ) CRY Godley & Creme 22 ( 8 ) I WANT TO WAKE UP WITH YOU Boris Gardiner 23 ( 12 ) OH PEOPLE Patti Labelle 24 ( 13 ) DREAMTIME Daryl Hall 25 ( 39 ) (I JUST) DIED IN YOUR ARMS Cutting Crew 26 ( 33 ) FOREVER (LIVE AND DIE) OMD 27 ( 15 ) I CAN PROVE IT Phil Fearon & Galaxy 28 ( 50 ) WORD UP Cameo 29 ( NEW ) RAIN OR SHINE Five Star 30 ( 30 ) TYPICAL MALE Tina Turner 31 ( 17 ) THE WAY IT IS Bruce Hornsby & The Range 32 ( 16 ) NICE IN NICE The Stranglers 33 ( 22 ) PAPA DON’T PREACH Madonna 34 ( 73 ) WALK THIS WAY Run-DMC featuring Aerosmith 35 ( 35 ) GLORY OF LOVE Peter Cetera 36 ( 38 ) PRETTY IN PINK The Psychedelic Furs 37 ( 26 ) LOVE THE ONE YOU’RE WITH Bucks Fizz 38 ( 23 ) A QUESTION OF TIME Depeche Mode 39 ( 58 ) LOVE CAN’T TURN AROUND Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk 40 ( 21 ) SHOUT Lulu 41 ( 18 ) CAN YOU FEEL THE FORCE (REMIX) The Real Thing 42 ( 28 ) I DIDN’T MEAN TO TURN YOU ON Robert Palmer 43 ( 47 ) SWEET FREEDOM Michael MacDonald 44 ( 40 ) NEW BEGINNING (MAMBA SEYRA) Bucks Fizz 45 ( 19 ) CARVE YOU IN MARBLE Tim Finn 46 ( 59 ) YOU CAN CALL ME AL Paul Simon 47 ( 27 ) NO MORE ‘I LOVE YOU’S A Lover Speaks 48 ( 44 ) A DIFFERENT CORNER George Michael 49 ( 45 ) OPPORTUNITIES (LET’S MAKE LOTS OF MONEY) Pet Shop Boys 50 ( 42 ) (BANG ZOOM) LET’S GO GO The Real Roxanne with Hitman Howie T 51 ( 34 ) GIRLS AND BOYS Prince 52 ( NEW ) CRUMMY STUFF The Ramones 53 ( 64 ) LOVERBOY Chairmen Of The Board 54 ( 56 ) STUCK WITH YOU Huey Lewis & The News 55 ( RE ) FOURTH RENDEZVOUS Jean-Michel Jarre 56 ( 37 ) WE WALKED IN LOVE Dollar 57 ( NEW ) MONTEGO BAY Amazulu 58 ( 41 ) CALLING ALL THE HEROES It Bites 59 ( 48 ) CAMOUFLAGE Stan Ridgway 60 ( NEW ) DIAMOND GIRL Pete Wylie 61 ( 53 ) I CAN’T WAIT Nu Shooz 62 ( 31 ) HAPPY TOGETHER Sophie & Peter Johnson 63 ( 49 ) I LOVE TO LOVE (REMIX) Tina Charles 64 ( 67 ) IN TOO DEEP Genesis 65 ( 65 ) E=MC2 Big Audio Dynamite 66 ( 57 ) THE EDGE OF HEAVEN Wham! 67 ( 46 ) PRESS Paul McCartney 68 ( NEW ) TOKYO STORM WARNING Elvis Costello 69 ( 54 ) HIGHER LOVE Stevie Winwood 70 ( NEW ) TRUE COLORS Cyndi Lauper 71 ( NEW ) BRAND NEW LOVER Dead Or Alive 72 ( NEW ) THE SOUND OF MUSIC Falco 73 ( 72 ) HOUNDS OF LOVE Kate Bush 74 ( NEW ) HOLD ON TIGHT Samantha Fox 75 ( NEW ) GRASS XTC Playlist Oldies Of The Week 1 WHITE ROSE OF ATHENS Nana Mouskouri 2 IT’S FOUR IN THE MORNING Faron Young 3 THE LEGEND OF XANADU Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich |

It's 4 weeks on top for Human, as Bon Jovi get a first top 5 along with INXS. Run DMC and Aerosmith have a big climb for a first top 10, while Cameo make it a second with Word Up. Big climbs into the 20 for Psychedelic Furs & Five Star, and highest new entry is one-hit wonders Timex Social Club with the great Rumors. Dead Or Alive keep the top 40 run going strong, and Michael MacDonald takes Sweet Freedom into the 40, Chairmen Of The Board do the same for the first time since Finder's Keepers in 1973, Pete Wylie adds to his occasional top 40 forays, Paul Simon makes his list longer, and Amazulu keep 'em coming. UB40 keep the 6-year-run strong as they enter with All I Want To Do, and The Bangles come back strongly walking like an Egyptian. Meat Loaf pairs with Parr for a spot of mercenary chart attacking, Big Country, Talking Heads and Ultravox have minor returns, and Queen's Highlander anthem Who wants To Live Forever sneaks in quietly. 1 ( 1 ) HUMAN Human League 2 ( 2 ) ELEANOR RIGBY/ YELLOW SUBMARINE The Beatles 3 ( 9 ) TRUE BLUE Madonna 4 ( 6 ) KISS THE DIRT (FALLING DOWN THE MOUNTAIN) INXS 5 ( 15 ) YOU GIVE LOVE A BAD NAME Bon Jovi 6 ( 8 ) DON’T LEAVE ME THIS WAY The Communards 7 ( 7 ) WE DON’T HAVE TO TAKE OUR CLOTHES OFF Jermaine Stewart 8 ( 34 ) WALK THIS WAY Run-DMC featuring Aerosmith 9 ( 3 ) WHEN I THINK OF YOU Janet Jackson 10 ( 28 ) WORD UP Cameo 11 ( 5 ) ADORATIONS Killing Joke 12 ( 12 ) RAGE HARD Frankie Goes To Hollywood 13 ( 16 ) HOLIDAY RAP MC MIker G & Deejay Sven 14 ( 25 ) (I JUST) DIED IN YOUR ARMS Cutting Crew 15 ( 29 ) RAIN OR SHINE Five Star 16 ( 4 ) BROTHER LOUIE Modern Talking 17 ( 36 ) PRETTY IN PINK The Psychedelic Furs 18 ( 13 ) DON’T WALK The Big Supreme 19 ( 20 ) THORN IN MY SIDE Eurythmics 20 ( 11 ) PANIC The Smiths 21 ( 10 ) AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH Diana Ross 22 ( 26 ) FOREVER (LIVE AND DIE) OMD 23 ( 14 ) BURN Doctor & The Medics 24 ( 39 ) LOVE CAN’T TURN AROUND Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk 25 ( 19 ) HEARTLAND The The 26 ( NEW ) RUMORS Timex Social Club 27 ( 30 ) TYPICAL MALE Tina Turner 28 ( 71 ) BRAND NEW LOVER Dead Or Alive 29 ( 17 ) AIN’T NOTHIN’ GOING’ ON BUT THE RENT Gwen Guthrie 30 ( 18 ) BREAKING AWAY Jaki Graham 31 ( 21 ) CRY Godley & Creme 32 ( 43 ) SWEET FREEDOM Michael MacDonald 33 ( 23 ) OH PEOPLE Patti Labelle 34 ( 53 ) LOVERBOY Chairmen Of The Board 35 ( 33 ) PAPA DON’T PREACH Madonna 36 ( 60 ) DIAMOND GIRL Pete Wylie 37 ( 57 ) MONTEGO BAY Amazulu 38 ( 27 ) I CAN PROVE IT Phil Fearon & Galaxy 39 ( 22 ) I WANT TO WAKE UP WITH YOU Boris Gardiner 40 ( 46 ) YOU CAN CALL ME AL Paul Simon 41 ( 32 ) NICE IN NICE The Stranglers 42 ( 24 ) DREAMTIME Daryl Hall 43 ( 37 ) LOVE THE ONE YOU’RE WITH Bucks Fizz 44 ( 38 ) A QUESTION OF TIME Depeche Mode 45 ( 52 ) CRUMMY STUFF The Ramones 46 ( 44 ) NEW BEGINNING (MAMBA SEYRA) Bucks Fizz 47 ( 55 ) FOURTH RENDEZVOUS Jean-Michel Jarre 48 ( 48 ) A DIFFERENT CORNER George Michael 49 ( 40 ) SHOUT Lulu 50 ( 35 ) GLORY OF LOVE Peter Cetera 51 ( NEW ) ALL I WANT TO DO UB40 52 ( 49 ) OPPORTUNITIES (LET’S MAKE LOTS OF MONEY) Pet Shop Boys 53 ( 42 ) I DIDN’T MEAN TO TURN YOU ON Robert Palmer 54 ( NEW ) WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN The Bangles 55 ( 47 ) NO MORE ‘I LOVE YOU’S A Lover Speaks 56 ( 45 ) CARVE YOU IN MARBLE Tim Finn 57 ( 72 ) THE SOUND OF MUSIC Falco 58 ( 41 ) CAN YOU FEEL THE FORCE (REMIX) The Real Thing 59 ( 64 ) IN TOO DEEP Genesis 60 ( 31 ) THE WAY IT IS Bruce Hornsby & The Range 61 ( NEW ) ROCK ‘N’ ROLL MERCENARIES Meat Loaf and John Parr 62 ( 68 ) TOKYO STORM WARNING Elvis Costello 63 ( NEW ) ONE GREAT THING Big Country 64 ( 65 ) E=MC2 Big Audio Dynamite 65 ( NEW ) SAME OLD STORY Ultravox 66 ( 66 ) THE EDGE OF HEAVEN Wham! 67 ( 74 ) HOLD ON TIGHT Samantha Fox 68 ( NEW ) WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER Queen 69 ( 56 ) WE WALKED IN LOVE Dollar 70 ( 61 ) I CAN’T WAIT Nu Shooz 71 ( 50 ) (BANG ZOOM) LET’S GO GO The Real Roxanne with Hitman Howie T 72 ( 73 ) HOUNDS OF LOVE Kate Bush 73 ( NEW ) WILD WILD LIFE Talking Heads 74 ( 59 ) CAMOUFLAGE Stan Ridgway 75 ( NEW ) NO MORE TEARS Hollywood Beyond PLAYLIST OLDIES 1 TELSTAR The Tornadoes 2 KEEP ON Bruce Channel 3 HERE IT COMES AGAIN The Fortunes |

23rd September 1986
It's 5 weeks on top for Human, on track to be my biggest record of 1986, and Five Star get into the top 5 with the lovely Rain Or Shine. Eurythmics get their almost obligatory top 10 in my charts, they rarely fail to make it, and Timex Social Club leap up to 10 for the first and last time with a top 10 track. Outside the top 10 things are very volatile with big drops, big climbers and loads of new entries: Dead Or Alive continue the run of top 20's, Paul Simon leaps Al up to 13, for his highest placing in 13 years, House hits my top 20 with the Jackmaster, OMD sneak another top 20, and highest new entry at 20 is a comeback for The Monkees, or rather 2 of them with vocals from Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork, and the first Monkees tracks to chart in 6 years, but actually the first new stuff ever to make my charts - as all their previous chart-toppers were reissues of stuff I adored before I began charting in 1968. They most-recently charted with a Paul Weller/Noel Gallagher song in 2017, their best stuff since their heyday 50 years earlier. Big climbers into the 40 for Meatloaf, Big Country, Falco, Ultravox and The Bangles, all returning from previous hits, while the 20-year-old That'll Be The Day brings Buddy Holly back into my charts - a semi-regular event over the decades which is pretty good considering they all date from the year I was born or earlier, being as he died around my first birthday. Others extending the runs of hits: Elton John (15 years), Billy Idol (8 years), Billy Joel (11 years), Ashford & Simpson (18 years as writers). Notable newies from Black, with the gorgeous Wonderful Life, Pet Shop Boys entering relatively low with Suburbia, following on from 2 chart-toppers & a top 10 - the B side was equally as good (Paninaro) and should have been the next single instead, but in those days B sides were ineligible for my charts or else it would certainly have topped my chart. 1 ( 1 ) HUMAN Human League 2 ( 2 ) ELEANOR RIGBY/ YELLOW SUBMARINE The Beatles 3 ( 3 ) TRUE BLUE Madonna 4 ( 5 ) YOU GIVE LOVE A BAD NAME Bon Jovi 5 ( 15 ) RAIN OR SHINE Five Star 6 ( 10 ) WORD UP Cameo 7 ( 8 ) WALK THIS WAY Run-DMC featuring Aerosmith 8 ( 19 ) THORN IN MY SIDE Eurythmics 9 ( 14 ) (I JUST) DIED IN YOUR ARMS Cutting Crew 10 ( 26 ) RUMORS Timex Social Club 11 ( 18 ) DON’T WALK The Big Supreme 12 ( 28 ) BRAND NEW LOVER Dead Or Alive 13 ( 40 ) YOU CAN CALL ME AL Paul Simon 14 ( 9 ) WHEN I THINK OF YOU Janet Jackson 15 ( 17 ) PRETTY IN PINK The Psychedelic Furs 16 ( 24 ) LOVE CAN’T TURN AROUND Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk featuring Daryl Pandy 17 ( 7 ) WE DON’T HAVE TO TAKE OUR CLOTHES OFF Jermaine Stewart 18 ( 22 ) FOREVER (LIVE AND DIE) OMD 19 ( 6 ) DON’T LEAVE ME THIS WAY The Communards 20 ( NEW ) THAT WAS THEN THIS IS NOW The Monkees 21 ( 4 ) KISS THE DIRT (FALLING DOWN THE MOUNTAIN) INXS 22 ( 13 ) HOLIDAY RAP MC MIker G & Deejay Sven 23 ( 11 ) ADORATIONS Killing Joke 24 ( 16 ) BROTHER LOUIE Modern Talking 25 ( 25 ) HEARTLAND The The 26 ( 12 ) RAGE HARD Frankie Goes To Hollywood 27 ( 36 ) DIAMOND GIRL Pete Wylie 28 ( 20 ) PANIC The Smiths 29 ( 32 ) SWEET FREEDOM Michael MacDonald 30 ( 21 ) AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH Diana Ross 31 ( 37 ) MONTEGO BAY Amazulu 32 ( 23 ) BURN Doctor & The Medics 33 ( 61 ) ROCK ‘N’ ROLL MERCENARIES Meat Loaf and John Parr 34 ( 34 ) LOVERBOY Chairmen Of The Board 35 ( 63 ) ONE GREAT THING Big Country 36 ( 54 ) WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN The Bangles 37 ( NEW ) THAT’LL BE THE DAY Buddy Holly & The Crickets 38 ( 31 ) CRY Godley & Creme 39 ( 57 ) THE SOUND OF MUSIC Falco 40 ( 65 ) SAME OLD STORY Ultravox 41 ( 35 ) PAPA DON’T PREACH Madonna 42 ( 33 ) OH PEOPLE Patti Labelle 43 ( 29 ) AIN’T NOTHIN’ GOING’ ON BUT THE RENT Gwen Guthrie 44 ( 51 ) ALL I WANT TO DO UB40 45 ( 30 ) BREAKING AWAY Jaki Graham 46 ( 59 ) IN TOO DEEP Genesis 47 ( 68 ) WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER Queen 48 ( NEW ) HEARTACHE ALL OVER THE WORLD Elton John 49 ( NEW ) TO BE A LOVER Billy Idol 50 ( 48 ) A DIFFERENT CORNER George Michael 51 ( 39 ) I WANT TO WAKE UP WITH YOU Boris Gardiner 52 ( 46 ) NEW BEGINNING (MAMBA SEYRA) Bucks Fizz 53 ( RE ) STUCK WITH YOU Huey Lewis & The News 54 ( 27 ) TYPICAL MALE Tina Turner 55 ( 38 ) I CAN PROVE IT Phil Fearon & Galaxy 56 ( 52 ) OPPORTUNITIES (LET’S MAKE LOTS OF MONEY) Pet Shop Boys 57 ( NEW ) WONDERFUL LIFE Black 58 ( NEW ) BA BA BANKROBBERY Eav 59 ( 49 ) SHOUT Lulu 60 ( NEW ) SUBURBIA Pet Shop Boys 61 ( 50 ) GLORY OF LOVE Peter Cetera 62 ( 41 ) NICE IN NICE The Stranglers 63 ( 67 ) HOLD ON TIGHT Samantha Fox 64 ( 64 ) E=MC2 Big Audio Dynamite 65 ( 42 ) DREAMTIME Daryl Hall 66 ( 43 ) LOVE THE ONE YOU’RE WITH Bucks Fizz 67 ( NEW ) COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS Ashford & Simpson 68 ( RE ) TRUE COLORS Cyndi Lauper 69 ( NEW ) A MATTER OF TRUST Billy Joel 70 ( NEW ) I WANT EVERYTHING The Godfathers 71 ( NEW ) RUNAWAY Luis Gardenas 72 ( 72 ) HOUNDS OF LOVE Kate Bush 73 ( NEW ) I’VE BEEN LOSING YOU a-ha 74 ( 66 ) THE EDGE OF HEAVEN Wham! 75 ( NEW ) GOOD VIBRATIONS Psychic TV Oldies 1 THE LEGEND OF XANADU Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich 2 SECRET LOVE Kathy Kirby 3 RACE WITH THE DEVIL Gun |

It's 6 weeks on top for Human, their longest run at 1, as Big Supreme get a well-deserved top 10 placing in the absence of an actual chart placing in the real world, and The Police try a comeback which goes horribly acrimoniously leaving only the new version of their 1980 number one in at 8 - they really did mean it when they said don't stand so close to me. Dead Or Alive get a full-set of top 10's since You spin me Round. Critics who claimed every Quo song sounded the same (they don't) had no response to their cover of In The Army Now, sounding nothing like Quo and fab, in at 18. Pet Shop Boys make it 4 top 20's in a row as Suburbia rockets up to 17, and Elton is still leaping into the 20 15 years on. The Pretenders have an Avengers-themed 60's moment with the great Don't Get Me Wrong in at 30, while lower end hits continue to enter for Loose Ends, Julian Cope and his best post-Teardrops Explode single, Howard Jones, Marti Webb, 15 years of Rod Stewart, Paul Young, The Housemartins, and New Order. 1 ( 1 ) HUMAN Human League 2 ( 3 ) TRUE BLUE Madonna 3 ( 8 ) THORN IN MY SIDE Eurythmics 4 ( 5 ) RAIN OR SHINE Five Star 5 ( 10 ) RUMORS Timex Social Club 6 ( 6 ) WORD UP Cameo 7 ( 11 ) DON’T WALK The Big Supreme 8 ( NEW ) DON’T STAND SO CLOSE TO ME ’86 The Police 9 ( 7 ) WALK THIS WAY Run-DMC featuring Aerosmith 10 ( 12 ) BRAND NEW LOVER Dead Or Alive 11 ( 2 ) ELEANOR RIGBY/ YELLOW SUBMARINE The Beatles 12 ( 13 ) YOU CAN CALL ME AL Paul Simon 13 ( 18 ) FOREVER (LIVE AND DIE) OMD 14 ( 15 ) PRETTY IN PINK The Psychedelic Furs 15 ( 16 ) LOVE CAN’T TURN AROUND Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk featuring Daryl Pandy 16 ( 20 ) THAT WAS THEN THIS IS NOW The Monkees 17 ( 60 ) SUBURBIA Pet Shop Boys 18 ( NEW ) IN THE ARMY NOW Status Quo 19 ( 4 ) YOU GIVE LOVE A BAD NAME Bon Jovi 20 ( 48 ) HEARTACHE ALL OVER THE WORLD Elton John 21 ( 14 ) WHEN I THINK OF YOU Janet Jackson 22 ( 9 ) (I JUST) DIED IN YOUR ARMS Cutting Crew 23 ( 39 ) THE SOUND OF MUSIC Falco 24 ( 19 ) DON’T LEAVE ME THIS WAY The Communards 25 ( 31 ) MONTEGO BAY Amazulu 26 ( 21 ) KISS THE DIRT (FALLING DOWN THE MOUNTAIN) INXS 27 ( 29 ) SWEET FREEDOM Michael MacDonald 28 ( 17 ) WE DON’T HAVE TO TAKE OUR CLOTHES OFF Jermaine Stewart 29 ( 34 ) LOVERBOY Chairmen Of The Board 30 ( NEW ) DON’T GET ME WRONG The Pretenders 31 ( 27 ) DIAMOND GIRL Pete Wylie 32 ( 35 ) ONE GREAT THING Big Country 33 ( 33 ) ROCK ‘N’ ROLL MERCENARIES Meat Loaf and John Parr 34 ( 24 ) BROTHER LOUIE Modern Talking 35 ( 36 ) WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN The Bangles 36 ( 30 ) AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH Diana Ross 37 ( 46 ) IN TOO DEEP Genesis 38 ( 40 ) SAME OLD STORY Ultravox 39 ( 28 ) PANIC The Smiths 40 ( 53 ) STUCK WITH YOU Huey Lewis & The News 41 ( 25 ) HEARTLAND The The 42 ( 32 ) BURN Doctor & The Medics 43 ( 22 ) HOLIDAY RAP MC MIker G & Deejay Sven 44 ( 44 ) ALL I WANT TO DO UB40 45 ( 41 ) PAPA DON’T PREACH Madonna 46 ( 49 ) TO BE A LOVER Billy Idol 47 ( 47 ) WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER Queen 48 ( 38 ) CRY Godley & Creme 49 ( 26 ) RAGE HARD Frankie Goes To Hollywood 50 ( 50 ) A DIFFERENT CORNER George Michael 51 ( NEW ) SLOW DOWN Loose Ends 52 ( NEW ) WORLD SHUT YOUR MOUTH Julian Cope 53 ( 23 ) ADORATIONS Killing Joke 54 ( 42 ) OH PEOPLE Patti Labelle 55 ( 57 ) WONDERFUL LIFE Black 56 ( 52 ) NEW BEGINNING (MAMBA SEYRA) Bucks Fizz 57 ( 73 ) I’VE BEEN LOSING YOU a-ha 58 ( 43 ) AIN’T NOTHIN’ GOING’ ON BUT THE RENT Gwen Guthrie 59 ( NEW ) ALL I WANT Howard Jones 60 ( 56 ) OPPORTUNITIES (LET’S MAKE LOTS OF MONEY) Pet Shop Boys 61 ( 68 ) TRUE COLORS Cyndi Lauper 62 ( 37 ) THAT’LL BE THE DAY Buddy Holly & The Crickets 63 ( 69 ) A MATTER OF TRUST Billy Joel 64 ( NEW ) ANOTHER HEARTACHE Rod Stewart 65 ( 45 ) BREAKING AWAY Jaki Graham 66 ( 64 ) E=MC2 Big Audio Dynamite 67 ( 67 ) COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS Ashford & Simpson 68 ( 55 ) I CAN PROVE IT Phil Fearon & Galaxy 69 ( NEW ) ALWAYS THERE Marti Webb 70 ( 59 ) SHOUT Lulu 71 ( NEW ) TWO OF HEARTS Stacey Q 72 ( NEW ) WONDERLAND Paul Young 73 ( NEW ) DREAMER B B & Q 74 ( NEW ) THINK FOR A MINUTE The Housemartins 75 ( NEW ) STATE OF THE NATION New Order FAVE OLDIES OF THE WEEK 1 HOW CAN YOU MEND A BROKEN HEART The Bee Gees 2 EMMA Hot Chocolate 3 THE WEDDING Julie Rogers 4 I STARTED A JOKE The Bee Gees 5 YOU’LL ALWAYS BE A FRIEND Hot Chocolate |

7th October 1986
7th and final week on top for Human (phew!) leaving Madonna at 2, Quo shooting up to 3, or Pet Shop Boys up to 7 to take over next week. Madonna had just had her first chart-topper, Pet Shop Boys 2 of 3, and Quo never ever topped my chart to date. The Monkees get a new track into the 10 for the first time ever, Paul Simon his first since Love Me Like A Rock in 1973, and The Pretenders make it 7 years of top 20's. Highest new entry is a stonking Hi-NRG version of the Supremes You Keep Me hanging On to give Kim Wilde her first biggie in a few years, in at 32, while Paul hardcastle takes the new TOTP theme tune in at 40. Red Box are all For America (not really, it's a slagging off), and Wax are systematic at 59 - but presumably not their car is not hydromatic, nor greased lightning. Shakatak & Gary Numan are back at 71 together again, and two veterans return - James Brown, and Jackson Browne, the man who had Doctor My Eyes back in 1972 before The Jackson 5 covered it. 1 ( 1 ) HUMAN Human League 2 ( 2 ) TRUE BLUE Madonna 3 ( 18 ) IN THE ARMY NOW Status Quo 4 ( 4 ) RAIN OR SHINE Five Star 5 ( 3 ) THORN IN MY SIDE Eurythmics 6 ( 8 ) DON’T STAND SO CLOSE TO ME ’86 The Police 7 ( 17 ) SUBURBIA Pet Shop Boys 8 ( 16 ) THAT WAS THEN THIS IS NOW The Monkees 9 ( 5 ) RUMORS Timex Social Club 10 ( 12 ) YOU CAN CALL ME AL Paul Simon 11 ( 10 ) BRAND NEW LOVER Dead Or Alive 12 ( 13 ) FOREVER (LIVE AND DIE) OMD 13 ( 15 ) LOVE CAN’T TURN AROUND Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk featuring Daryl Pandy 14 ( 30 ) DON’T GET ME WRONG The Pretenders 15 ( 7 ) DON’T WALK The Big Supreme 16 ( 6 ) WORD UP Cameo 17 ( 9 ) WALK THIS WAY Run-DMC featuring Aerosmith 18 ( 23 ) THE SOUND OF MUSIC Falco 19 ( 25 ) MONTEGO BAY Amazulu 20 ( 20 ) HEARTACHE ALL OVER THE WORLD Elton John 21 ( 14 ) PRETTY IN PINK The Psychedelic Furs 22 ( 11 ) ELEANOR RIGBY/ YELLOW SUBMARINE The Beatles 23 ( 29 ) LOVERBOY Chairmen Of The Board 24 ( 24 ) DON’T LEAVE ME THIS WAY The Communards 25 ( 21 ) WHEN I THINK OF YOU Janet Jackson 26 ( 27 ) SWEET FREEDOM Michael MacDonald 27 ( 40 ) STUCK WITH YOU Huey Lewis & The News 28 ( 28 ) WE DON’T HAVE TO TAKE OUR CLOTHES OFF Jermaine Stewart 29 ( 35 ) WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN The Bangles 30 ( 19 ) YOU GIVE LOVE A BAD NAME Bon Jovi 31 ( 22 ) (I JUST) DIED IN YOUR ARMS Cutting Crew 32 ( NEW ) YOU KEEP ME HANGIN’ ON Kim Wilde 33 ( 26 ) KISS THE DIRT (FALLING DOWN THE MOUNTAIN) INXS 34 ( 37 ) IN TOO DEEP Genesis 35 ( 34 ) BROTHER LOUIE Modern Talking 36 ( 38 ) SAME OLD STORY Ultravox 37 ( 52 ) WORLD SHUT YOUR MOUTH Julian Cope 38 ( 51 ) SLOW DOWN Loose Ends 39 ( 39 ) PANIC The Smiths 40 ( NEW ) THE WIZARD Paul Hardcastle 41 ( 36 ) AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH Diana Ross 42 ( 46 ) TO BE A LOVER Billy Idol 43 ( 47 ) WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER Queen 44 ( RE ) BA BA BANKROBBERY Eav 45 ( 57 ) I’VE BEEN LOSING YOU a-ha 46 ( 45 ) PAPA DON’T PREACH Madonna 47 ( 61 ) TRUE COLORS Cyndi Lauper 48 ( 48 ) CRY Godley & Creme 49 ( 42 ) BURN Doctor & The Medics 50 ( 50 ) A DIFFERENT CORNER George Michael 51 ( 63 ) A MATTER OF TRUST Billy Joel 52 ( 31 ) DIAMOND GIRL Pete Wylie 53 ( NEW ) FOR AMERICA Red Box 54 ( 59 ) ALL I WANT Howard Jones 55 ( 33 ) ROCK ‘N’ ROLL MERCENARIES Meat Loaf and John Parr 56 ( 32 ) ONE GREAT THING Big Country 57 ( 41 ) HEARTLAND The The 58 ( 56 ) NEW BEGINNING (MAMBA SEYRA) Bucks Fizz 59 ( NEW ) SYSTEMATIC Wax 60 ( 60 ) OPPORTUNITIES (LET’S MAKE LOTS OF MONEY) Pet Shop Boys 61 ( 69 ) ALWAYS THERE Marti Webb 62 ( 54 ) OH PEOPLE Patti Labelle 63 ( NEW ) WHOLE NEW WORLD It Bites 64 ( 44 ) ALL I WANT TO DO UB40 65 ( 72 ) WONDERLAND Paul Young 66 ( 71 ) TWO OF HEARTS Stacey Q 67 ( 66 ) E=MC2 Big Audio Dynamite 68 ( 73 ) DREAMER B B & Q 69 ( 64 ) ANOTHER HEARTACHE Rod Stewart 70 ( 75 ) STATE OF THE NATION New Order 71 ( NEW ) NEW THING FROM LONDON TOWN Sharpe & Numan 72 ( NEW ) IN THE SHAPE OF A HEART Jackson Browne 73 ( NEW ) GRAVITY James Brown 74 ( 74 ) THINK FOR A MINUTE The Housemartins 75 ( 53 ) ADORATIONS Killing Joke 7th Oct PLAYIST OLDIES 1 I STARTED A JOKE The Bee Gees 2 LAST NIGHT IN SOHO Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich 3 THE LEGEND OF XANADU Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich |

Welcome back Popchartfreak (or should that be our Halloween username 'Choppartfreak' this month! ), haven't seen you around on the site in a while.
'Kim's version of 'You Keep Me Hanging On' is very good I think. I really like the epic production in it, and it isn't cheesy unlike a lot of late 80s Hi-NRG/dance-pop songs! 'Love Can't Turn Around' is much more fun and funky than many of the house hits to come in 1987 and 1988. Very good track. As for Dead or Alive, 'Brand New Lover' is very good but, naturally, I prefer the more dancey sounding 'Something In My House'. 'Suburbia' I definitely much prefer to 'Opportunities....' Great song. 'Don't Get Me Wrong' by The Pretenders is a lovely song as is 'Wonderful Life' by Black and your oldie The Bee Gees 'I Started A Joke'. I really like Bon Jovi's track 'You Give Love A Bad Name' too, probably more than 'Living On A Prayer'. Finally the Sharpe and Numan track 'New Thing From London Town' I have just listened to, and it sounds great for the time, pity it wasn't a hit. SEVEN WEEKS?!!!!! This is simply unforgivable Suburbia though Hi dandy A bit over rated by me i agree, but at least i didnt keep you on tenterhooks wondering how long the torture would carry on with human on top Suburbia is a better record, and the best track in the upper reaches i agree. This marked the changeover from human league being my fave act of the 80s to pet shop boys being my fave act of the second half of the 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s. Cheers! John |

Hi John.
So sorry to hear of recent issues. I hope you are ok. Missed you in BJSC last month. As for 1986, this was the year where I became obsessed with the charts and TOTP for the first time, so will need to set aside a couple of hours to go through this thread. I'm sure I will approve Glad to have you back |

It's Madonna grabbing a second chart-topper and not the Pet Shop Boys who have to make do with 4 for now, their 3rd top 5 (2 of them number 1's). I love the video for True Blue, Madonna was all 50's-stylee in love with Sean Penn. Possibly why she excludes the track at every opportunity from compilations and concerts. It's not as if it's as awful as Hanky Panky... The Pretenders make it 7 years of top 10 hits, since Kid became the first, and OMD 6 years after a slow climb with Forever (Live And Die). Red Box rocket up For America and a second top 20, The Bangles get a 3rd, and Chairmen Of The Board do it for the 7th time after a gap of 13 years. Highest new entry is a bit of a classic from Berlin, Take My Breath Away from a film I've never seen, Top something or other starring Tom somebody. Probably obscure. New at 34 it's DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince, both debuting for the start of a lengthy chart runs as kids. Not sure what happened to Will someone, I think he went into acting and had some modest success. The Stranglers are back with Always The Sun, very tuneful and not at all like Peaches some 9 years earlier, in at 47. Kissing The Pink get a 3rd entry, presumably It should have been Kissing The Green as pink is worth 6.
