In a recent interview, Dua Lipa stood her ground against naysayers claiming her music "all sounds the same"

QUOTE
Dua Lipa was unimpressed by social media saying that “Houdini” micked her previous releases

— “It’s not the same at all, people just say things for the sake of saying things or to rile people up… I don’t resonate with that at all, also, I’ve been listening to the new songs, compared to ‘Physical’ or ‘Love Again’, and they have no relation whatsoever. They sound like me, because I’m singing them, but sonically they’re worlds apart!”

I tbink SHE'S riled up by it!! And her music DOES all sound the same, as she hasn't evolved her sound!! In fact, the most radically different was One, Two, Three (Don't Let Him In) and Be The One, which were from the first album!!! Since then, the extreme pop productionof everything, from lyrics polished to the bone, the music, and the vocals, every track could be on any other album. You could switch the lyrics from one track to another, or the vocalz, and they'd be the same! Girls Aloud suffered from the same thing too, but they did evolve the sound for their last album ... but the production and vocal productions made the tracks so pristine that they became pasturised, just like Dua's.

This energy that pop girls need to reinvent and constantly change in 2024 feels rooted in misogyny. Why aren't rock bands or rappers or male singer songwriters not treated with same expectations?

Dua has her own unique funky dance pop sound, nobody else is making music like she does. Many even copied her after she brought back disco into the mainstream.

While I don't think this era's music is "world's apart" from Future Nostalgia, I do think it's taken a fresh and grittier approach with slightly more daring elements. For example, when that intro for Houdini comes on the radio you immediately pay attention. The instrument breakdowns in Houdini and Illusion, the guitar outro in Houdini, Training Season's relentless energy.

As she said though, "They sound the same because she's singing it" *mic drop*

I genuinely think she's done something this time around which although feels identifiable to her brand she's carved out, and although it's not a radical 180 has shown a bit of progression which I think is the right way to go. Like, the Tame Impala influence in 'Houdini' is clear and something different to what she was doing before.

It's true, why aren't rappers or certain male artists being commented on for this when some I could mention are notorious for regurgitating? Or even Becky Hill for example who has LITERALLY been pumping out the exact same song for years now.

Houdini is not the problem lol, Illusion is the one she has done way better before, and that's why it has performed modestly compared to H, TS, especially in the US where her fanbase isn't that big so she needs to sell the songs more to get big hits.
