The video is great. The song is obviously great too but it just doesn't blow me away.

5th place - Maria McKee - Show Me Heaven
7.0

I did like this back in 1990 but I assumed I wouldn't like it very much now because my tastes have changed so much. But it is still very good.
The early 90s seemed to have so many huge hits from movies. I'm sure her voice is not for everyone.

She finished the year in 6th place

4th place - Sinéad O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2U

7.5

Yeah - I know. I'm going to get abuse for not having this at least in second place. It is flawless. Her voice. Her performance. The video. The music. The lyrics. The lyrics are the biggest factor, for me. The first couplet is devastating. A uniquely compelling song.

I didn't like it at the time. It was the biggest seller of 1990 until the first week in December when Unchained Melody replaced it.

Knock EnglandNewOrder into last place (sorry it's got footballers rapping on it, just no, not under any circumstances! laugh.gif ) and the rest is pretty much a perfect list to date....

3rd place - Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody

7.9

Time goes by, so slowly. Hey Madonna, quit stealing our lyrics. I really didn't understand the fuss with this when I was a kid and honestly only started to appreciate the climax of the song this week. It's an old chestnut of a song which has probably been ruined by the multitude of covers that never match the Righteous Brother's now definitive version.

As you all know, this was the best selling single of 1990. It is incumbent upon me to review one of the covers later in this thread. Pray for me. sad.gif

2nd place - Elton John - Sacrifice

8.3

One of those songs with a better verse than chorus. I love the music from the second verse onward. And the exquisite poignant melody of each verse. A totally uncool song by a totally uncool singer. If I believed in guilty pleasures, this would be one. Despite being the only 5-weeker in 1990, it finished in 3rd place in the chart of the year.

1st place - Adamski - Killer

10.0

It will come as no surprise to Dandy* and a few others that this comes out at the top of my ranking as it's one of the best songs of 1990 and one of the best dance songs of all time.

I'm copying my review from an old review that I did somewhere else on Buzzjack.

Killer is quite an unusual song in that it is almost universally revered and has been covered many times but nothing really sounded like it afterwards. The first and only song I've heard compared to it was Gnarls Barkley's Crazy and that wasn't exactly in the same genre. Anyway, the instant hook of the kick drum and THAT riff plus Seal's textured vocals made this a huge hit.

With a large sigh I must proceed to the musical wasteland that is the top 10 sellers of 1991.

10th place - Color Me Badd - I Wanna Sex You Up

2.0

In quite the contrast to 1990 there's very little to recommend in the 1991 biggest 10 sellers. Five of them all vying for worst song, but I Wanna Sex You Up clinches it. I do like the intro.

Dismal.

The is marginally less awful because they aren't American.

8th place - The Simpsons - Do the Bartman

3.8

There's a certain funkiness that lifts this above the two song that precede it but it's still cringe worthy novelty pap.

4.0

Phew! At least were over the completely awful songs. This would probably come last if it was in the 1990 top 10. I never ever need to listen to it again, though.

6th place - Oceanic Insanity

4.1

Now we're into the unfeasibly successful tunes. 1991 was a great year for dance music with rave going overground and into the charts. Somehow Insanity sold more than the rest and wouldn't leave the Top 10 for the whole of September and October. Some versions of this song are worse than others.

Diabetics beware. A Christmas number 1 in sheep's clothing.

4th place - Bryan Adams - (Everything I Do) I Do It For You

4.4

I'd already heard this too many times by the end of July 1991. Even Summer of 69 was better than this.

3rd place- Cher - The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)

5.5

Ok - we've made it to the three songs that have redeemable features. The main one in this is simply because it's Cher singing. And she has a great voice.

2nd place - Chesney Hawkes - The One and Only

6.2

I never ever thought The One and Only would be second in any list I ever did, but here we are. There's lots wrong with this but I really like the verses.

1st place - Queen - These Are The Days Of Our Lives (and that other song)

8.0

The only song in this top 10 (11 counting BR) that I would actually choose to listen to. I sometimes wonder if this would have hit number 1 on its own, after Freddie's death. He looked somewhat content in the promo, with his friends around him, knowing he wouldn't record many more songs or videos. Lyrically and musically it's beautiful.

If this hadn't sold so much, I'd have been reviewing 2 Unlimited's Get Read For This and we'd have had possibly the worst top 10s ever.

I agree with your top 2. These Are The Days Of Our Lives is packed with emotion and The One And Only was written by Nik Kershaw giving him the well deserved no.1 single that he didn't quite manage with his own songs.

laugh.gif at you rushing through 1991 to get it out of the way so you never have to think of it again! I think Chesney Hawkes may actually be my favourite of the ten, which says enough in itself.

Killer was obviously going to be your #1 for 1990 and it’s very much deserved wub.gif
