Funny how the increase in number ones by the late 90s really only means classic songs that reached the top spot stayed there for a shorter time as boy and girl bands just took their final weeks away by releasing when the moment was right - in the early decade the classic number ones stayed for 3-5 weeks as this wasn’t the case!

It was all about marketing, building up demand for weeks and weeks before release, 99p CD's week of release to maximise sales, and then a downward chart trajectory after that. Almost no records had steady climbs, and most of those that did were from movies. It all cheapened the charts, as the 90's rapid turnover made loads of records that had only one real week of sales into "hits" that were forgotten before they had a chance to build. I'd like someone to do a "rolling-top-10" averaging out the later 90's sales over 2 or 3 weeks to see what the real chart-toppers actually were minus the Record Industry manipulation.... smile.gif

Let's start off with the ZERO pointers from 1990-1996

No 176- ZERO POINTS

Cliff Richard- Saviour's Day- #1 for 1 week in December 1990- He's related to god so I guess we're all going to hell!

Iron Maiden- Bring Your Daughter......To The Slaughter-- #1 for 2 weeks in January 1991- It was from a "Nightmare On Elm Street" film but we think it was a nightmare at No 1

Hale & Pace- The Stonk- #1 for 1 week in March 1991- "Comedy" seems to be deeply ironic for this one.

Vic Reeves & Wonderstuff- Dizzy- #1 for 2 weeks in November 1991- seems we prefer Vic for his jokes rather than his singing

KWS- Game Boy- #1 for 5 weeks in April/May 1992- Yeah no-one recalls "Game Boy" do they.....

Shaggy- Oh Carolina- #1 for 2 weeks in March 1993- Nil points for Mr Lover Lover

Chaka Demus & Pliers- Twist And Shout- #1 for 2 weeks in January 1994- more reggae bits the bullet

Manchester United Football Squad- Come On You Reds- # 1 for 2 weeks in May 1994- A football record combined with Status Quo- a predictable zero pointer

Take That- Sure- #1 for 2 weeks in October 1994- They have another 7 entries but this is one that you "sure" aren't keen on biggrin.gif

Pato Banton Featuring Robin & Ali Campbell- Baby Come Back- #1 for 4 weeks in October/November 1994- Reggae again

Robson & Jerome- Unchained Melody- #1 for 7 weeks in May/June/ July 1995- The second biggest seller of the decade found little favour with us.

Shaggy- Mr Boombastic- #1 for 1 week in September 1995- And now you kick out Shaggy's other effort without any points!

Robson & Jerome- Up On The Roof/ I Believe- #1 for 4 weeks in November/ December 1995- It doesn't matter which of the A-Sides were offered- you gave them both a fat zero!

Take That- How Deep Is Your Love- #1 for 3 weeks in March 1996- Perhaps our emotions got the better of us when they split- this is the second Take That song to leave the rate.

Gary Barlow- Forever Love- #1 for 1 week in July 1996- and we aren't keen on Barlow's initial solo effort either.

Peter Andre- Flava- #1 for 1 week in September 1996- We're not hypnotised by that six pack anymore as we boot this out.

Boyzone- Words- #1 for 1 week in October 1996- The first of 6 chart toppers to exit the rate- this was their first No 1

Robson & Jerome- What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted/ Saturday Night At The Movies- #1 for 2 weeks in November 1996- this remains the only Triple A-Side single to make No 1 but you're kicking two of the three tracks out straight away. More surprisingly it means that 2 R & J tracks have picked up points!

Peter Andre- I Feel You- #1 in December 1996- and now we're done with Peter as we rebuff his second offering

Dunblane- Knockin On Heaven's Door- Throw These Guns Away- #1 for 1 week in December 1996- Another charity record then we don't seem to love now,.
