Congrats Green Day on your third #1 album, the other two being American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown. They now have as many #1 albums as they do #2 albums (Dookie, Insomniac, and Uno). Norah Jones narrowly takes #2, she also has three #1s but all six of her studio albums have peaked in the top three. OneRepublic miss the top 2 but have their highest charting album to date, just beating Native which peaked at #4. Their other two both missed the top 10. Surprisingly, so has every Alter Bridge album since their debut until this one, their first top 10 in 12 years. Likewise, Phantogram improves from the #11 peak of their previous album. Further down, what happened to Daya's album, a new entry at #36 of all places? Britney Spears drops to #200, giving Glory seven weeks in the top 200 unless it climbs next week or re-enters later on.

Green Day Earns Third No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Revolution Radio'
10/16/2016 by Keith Caulfield

Green Day rocks the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200 with its third chart-topping album, Revolution Radio. The band’s 12th studio effort enters atop the list with 95,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Oct. 13, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 90,000 were in traditional album sales.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Oct. 29-dated chart (where Revolution Radio debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Green Day last led the Billboard 200 more than seven years ago, with 21st Century Breakdown. That set debuted atop the chart dated May 30, 2009 and spent one week in the penthouse. Before that, the band's first No. 1, American Idiot, racked up three nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 back in 2004 and 2005.

After 21st Century Breakdown, the band’s next studio project was the expansive Uno!, Dos!, Tre! series -- three studio albums released in quick succession in late 2012. Uno! and Dos! debuted and peaked at Nos. 2 and 9, respectively, while Tre! missed the top 10, peaking at No. 13 (its opening frame).
Overall, Revolution Radio is Green Day’s tenth top 10 album, stretching back to its breakthrough effort, Dookie, which peaked at No. 2 back in January of 1995.
The new album was led by the single “Bang Bang,” which garnered the act its 21st top 10 hit on the Alternative Songs airplay chart. The only acts with more top 10s on the 28-year-old tally are Foo Fighters (with 22), U2 (23) and Red Hot Chili Peppers (25).

Back on the new Billboard 200, Norah Jones collects her sixth top 10 effort, as Day Breaks bows at No. 2 with 47,000 units (44,000 in traditional album sales). Her last solo studio album, 2012’s Little Broken Hearts, launched at No. 2 with 110,000 copies sold. Day Breaks also enters at No. 1 on the Jazz Albums chart, giving the artist her second leader on the tally. She was last atop the list back in 2004, when her debut effort Come Away With Me wrapped a run of 115 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1.

OneRepublic notches its highest charting album ever on the Billboard 200, as Oh My My bows at No. 3 with 46,000 units (35,000 in traditional album sales). The band first hit the top 10 with its last effort, 2013’s Native, debuting and peaking at No. 4 from a 60,000-sales start. Before that, 2009’s Waking Up peaked at No. 21 in its opening frame (in the thick of the very competitive Christmas shopping season), and the group’s debut effort, Dreaming Out Loud, peaked at No. 14 back in 2008.

Drake’s Views dips one rung to No. 4 on the new Billboard 200, with 43,000 units (down 9 percent) and the Suicide Squad soundtrack falls a spot to No. 5 with 37,000 units (down 1 percent).

Solange’s A Seat at the Table descends from No. 1 to No. 6 in its second week with 34,000 units (down 53 percent).

Twenty One Pilots’ Blurryface rises one position to No. 7 with 29,000 units (up 15 percent), following the band’s performance on the Oct. 8 edition of NBC’s Saturday Night Live.

Rock band Alter Bridge is back in the top 10 for the first time in more than 12 years, as The Last Hero debuts at No. 8 with 28,000 units (27,000 in traditional album sales). The group was last in the top 10 way back in 2004, when its first effort One Day Remains debuted and peaked at No. 5 on the Aug. 28, 2004-dated list. After that, the band notched three more top 20-charting sets with Blackbird (No. 13 in 2007), AB III (No. 17 in 2010) and Fortress (No. 12 in 2013). The Last Hero also opens at No. 1 on the Independent Albums chart, the band’s first leader on the tally.

Alt-rock duo Phantogram claims its highest-charting album on the Billboard 200 and best sales week yet, as its third full-length studio effort, Three, starts at No. 9 with 25,000 units (23,000 in traditional album sales). The act (comprised of Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter) saw its last set Voices top out at No. 11 in 2014 (off a 21,000 sales start), while its 2010 debut effort Eyelid Movies missed the chart. (Between its first and second album, however, the act logged entries with a pair of EPs: Nightlife and a self-titled set, which reached Nos. 122 and 155, respectively.)

Rounding out the latest top 10 is Ariana Grande’s Dangerous Woman, slipping three spots to No. 10 with 25,000 units (down 5 percent).

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: Melissa Etheridge Earns 14th Top 40 Album
10/19/2016 by Keith Caulfield

On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Oct. 29), Green Day nabbed its third No. 1 with Revolution Radio, while four more albums arrived in the top 10.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the latest Billboard 200 chart:

— Melissa Etheridge, Memphis Rock and Soul - No. 34 — Melissa Etheridge keeps up her hot streak in the top 40 of the Billboard 200, as her latest album, Memphis Rock and Soul, debuts at No. 34. It’s her 14th top 40-charting set — her only album to miss the region was the 2008 holiday effort, A New Thought for Christmas (No. 113 peak).

Etheridge made her Billboard 200 debut nearly 30 years ago, on the Jun 18, 1988-dated list, with her self-titled album. It eventually peaked at No. 22 the following year.

In the past 30 years, Etheridge is tied with Celine Dion for the fifth-most top 40 albums among women. In that span of time, the only women with more top 40-charting sets are Mary J. Blige, Reba McEntire (both with 16), Mariah Carey (19), Barbra Streisand (20) and Madonna (22).

Etheridge’s new blues/rock album is a covers set of tunes associated with the Stax label, and also debuts at No. 9 on Top Rock Albums and No. 1 on the Blues Albums chart — Etheridge’s first leader on the latter tally.

— Daya, Sit Still, Look Pretty - No. 36 — After peaking at No. 61 with her self-titled debut EP, the rising star bows at No. 36 with her first full-length album, Sit Still, Look Pretty. The set starts with 13,000 equivalent album units earned, of which 6,000 were in traditional album sales. The new album includes her breakthrough single “Hide Away,” which peaked at No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the title cut, which has so far reached No. 28 on the list. (The album does not feature her monster hit with The Chainsmokers, “Don’t Let Me Down,” which peaked at No. 3. The track isn’t actually on any album yet.)

— Barry Gibb, In the Now - No. 63 — Barry Gibb’s second solo album begins at No. 63, and is his first collection of all new material since the final Bee Gees studio album, 2001’s This Is Where I Came In. Gibb’s first solo set, Now Voyager, hit No. 72 in 1984.

— Bruno Mars, Doo-Wops & Hooligans - No. 116 — Bruno Mars’ debut album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, jumps back onto the list at No. 116 (6,000 units; up 40 percent) following the release of his new single “24K Magic.” It’s the highest rank for the album since the Feb. 27-dated chart, when it placed at No. 107 (up from No. 174 the week previous), following his performance during the Super Bowl halftime show. Mars’ second album, Unorthodox Jukebox, also bounds back onto the new Billboard 200, at No. 147 (5,000 units; up 52 percent).

— Van Halen, 5150 - No. 132 — 5150 (5,000 units earned in the week ending Oct. 13; up 149 percent) returns after Google Play discounted the set to 99 cents. The set has been absent from the chart since June of 1987.

The album was Van Halen’s first No. 1, and topped the list for three weeks a little more than 30 years ago (April 26-May 10, 1986). The band followed up 5150 with four more chart toppers: OU810 (1988), For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991), Balance (1995) and Best of Volume 1 (1996).

Another 99 cent deal in the Google Play store pushes PARTYNEXTDOOR’s PARTYNEXTDOOR 3 from No. 84 to No. 46 with a 50 percent gain (to 11,000 units).

— Garth Brooks, The Ultimate Hits - No. 150 — The superstar’s 2007 hits album returns to the list for the first time in over a year, following its reissue on Oct. 7. The set debuted and peaked at No. 3 on the Nov. 24, 2007-dated chart. Brooks most recently hit the chart with a new album nearly two years ago, when Man Against Machine bowed and peaked at No. 4 on Nov. 29, 2014.
