Glad to see they have reduced Olly to 59p - He needs the sales boost!

Posted by: cqmerqn Aug 11 2016, 11:17 PM

Jedward will obviously smash straight into number one

KIDS isn't as good as Wherever I Go, it's still nice though!

Nothing exciting this week then - Would love Bon Jovi and One Republic to do well but I think the days of Bon Jovi troubling the singles chart are long over.

The Example track is not bad - Surprised that Sony are still backing him though. M.I.A to smash with 'Bird Song' please wub.gif

Posted by: Jonjo Aug 11 2016, 11:32 PM

OneRepublic to smash please. Hopefully with the remix EP now out there, 'Make Me' can get some sort of benefit from it!

Is that Tom Chaplin from Keane?

Posted by: Hayzayy Aug 12 2016, 08:07 AM

"Stand by me" by Florence & The Machine is so beautiful wub.gif All three songs are superb smile.gif

Posted by: ML Hammer95 Aug 12 2016, 08:29 AM

The new WSTRN song doesnt sound like a hit to me, theyre making singles that sound too much like 'In2' without being nearly as strong. Although perhaps In2 was more of a 'moment'... where the song was bigger than the artists.

Saying this, 'Social' is much better and should be receiving the single treatment. Different from WSTRN but so catchy.

People literally wait for songs to be 59p it seems, i knew it would happen eventually. Good move this week, wasn't making much progress.

Posted by: danG Aug 12 2016, 11:04 AM

None of the new releases this week seem to be potential top 40 new entries then, the Bon Jovi, Courteeners and Green Day songs are all so high from fanbase buys I imagine.

Heard that Florence song on Radio 1 this morning though and it sounded great, maybe that could do something though its streams won't be good.

As Record of the Day have pointed out, reducing singles to 59p is beginning to bite labels in the bum. People are now waiting for them to reduce the price and turning their nose up at 99p downloads. It just further reinforces people's low sense of the value of music. It might give boosts to certain singles in the short term but in the long term it's a bad idea.

Posted by: Joe. Aug 12 2016, 12:16 PM

As I've said before, 99p is just too much for one song these days. They need make the standard price 59p

Indeed. I seem to recall 'Because We Can' going as high as #6 on iTunes but only just scrapped the Top 40, so I don't think there's a cat in hell's chance of the new Bon Jovi song reaching the Top 40 this time, especially when the cut off is almost 16k now!

I don't think you need to worry about this for a few weeks. Radio 1 will support it after a few weeks and it'll slowly start climbing again.

The thing is though the 59p price tag seems to have struck a chord with buyers - I'll happily stream and will usually only purchase once a track is 59p, I had no intentions of buying Ollys track and was content with streaming, Same for Jonas Blue, Calum Scott etc.,

With so many albums being sold for ฃ4.99 - ฃ6.99 now and Google Play having weekly ฃ1.99 albums (And 99p events every few months) paying 99p for 1 track seems so inflated, For example Lukas Graham's 'Mama Said' was 99p while their album was available for ฃ1.99 on Google.

New Green Day song is good smile.gif . With it, Bon Jovi and the Stone Roses and Viola Beach earlier this year, we have had more rock tracks in the itunes top 40 this year so far than many recent years.

Also I see that annoying song in that National Citizenship advert has appeared at number #167 sad.gif

Runthrough of this week's dance songs on the itunes chart

Nice to see Danza Kuduro back at number 102. Great memories of holidays to Portugal for that one and of course it was huge in Portugal a few years ago. smile.gif

The Bob Marley remix is actually not too bad for a tropical house song as it is more lively than the usual songs in the genre, but I wish they left the horrible pan flute bit out.

The new Kungs I am pleasantly surprised by. Good nu-disco tune. This one is MUCH better than This Girl.

John Gibbons Would I Lie To You is the best though - throwback to the glorious days of 80s remixes (I know it is an early 90s song originally though). dance.gif

But I never would have bought them at full price (As is the case with many others it seems), I would have happily carried on streaming.

The days of 99p downloads are over and with streaming accelerating they need to react or accept the download market will die a painful death, 59p probably is to low but being able to stream music for free essentially gives a song a 0p value anyway.

41.John Gibbons - Would I Lie To You
47. offaiah - Trouble
54. Imany - Don't Be So Shy

Three great early/mid 2000s-style uplifting lively dance tunes just outside the itunes top 40. Great compared to the whining sound effects of DJ Snake/Chainsmokers/Garrix's new stuff in the itunes chart or the dullness of Kungs/Cookin, Tieks or Major Lazer/Beiber and I hope they do well.

That John Gibbons song seems to have come from nowhere by the way but is already holding up well ...

Toothbrush isn't great, but not the most dire thong in the chart. Its not as bad as those awful imo. sound effects infecting some forms of dance music at the minute (Garrix, Chainsmokers)

For instance Dont Let Me Down is a great song in the verses and chorus, why did they ruin it with the awful annoying noises of the drop.

YES NEIKED *.* 'Sexual' really reminds me of something Ciara would record <3 I would also love for Matoma to reach the top 40. wub.gif 'False Alarm' is brilliant!

It's also great to see Usher as high as #34 with 'Crash'. Really willing for that to become a hit for him and 'Superlove' is having a decent effect with the video premiere! It was top 900 before the video was release. biggrin.gif

Just about top 75 for Crash with streams tho unfort - good track! Thought an artist like usher would do well on streaming since he's American!

The John Gibbons track sounds like something from the 2005 funky retro remix/cover trend (which I liked) so I am willing it to do well. Needs some AirPlay though and a reduction to 59p.

Offaiah is a great tune too, like the female disco vocals in it, again very mid 00s,although more like early 2006 with the Infernal/Beatfreakz eurodance synths and David Guetta Love Dont Let Me Go style drop. Also needs to be reduced to 59p although it will get AirPlay I am sure (R1 likes it) smile.gif

Other tracks I like - Alarm is still doing well enough. Love the way she sings the end of each verse where her voice drops down low - very unique.

Can only assume it's people returning from holiday and buying it? It's been 59p for weeks now so that's not the reason.

Also the fire lack of new releases might be helping as people seek out something new!

That is also Charlie Puth.

What the backing singing too... it sounds like female disco vocals to me?

Oh well I like it a bit of early 2006 style dance music is great and refereshing to hear with all the futuristic stuff like Matoma and Chainsmokers getting tiresome to a retro style dance lover like me. dance.gif

The Imany rise reminds me of what happened with Passenger - Let Her Go which rose well into the iunes top 40 before any playlisting and then AirPlay really got started - I wondered why that happened....

I've seen it on the music channels a fair bit recently too so rotation must be increasing on those!

I can't even find a video for it?

Where do we think Ellie will end up tomorrow? I'm thinking top 5?

With the state of sales right now I think she'll easily be able to get top 3. There's also another big release from Shawn Mendes - that could halt its climb but I reckon Ellie will reach the top 3.

Is Shawn releasing another promo track? Or is it a single? I was also thinking top 3 but I thought it would be difficult with double Bieber and The Chainsmokers

She went top 3 last year with On My Mind whilst Bieber was number one. Would 4K first day sales be enough for a top 3 placing?

It's called Mercy and I've just seen it's a promo track laugh.gif. I thought it was a single but obviously I was mistaken.

On iTunes? I'd think so. 5k would get Ellie iTunes number one.

Posted by: danG Aug 18 2016, 11:52 AM

'On My Mind' only debuted at #7 and peaked at #5 (unless you're talking about iTunes peaks).

I think this new one will do better (having not heard it though but it's meant to sound 'big'). I'd guess at #3 on iTunes / #5 official.

More Ellie then. Not overly pleased - the tone of her voice, I find a little annoying. Not a big fan of the fairy like vocals. angel.gif

Despite this, Starry Eyed/The Writer I liked back in the day though. Outside was tolerable because it was a great dance tune and for some reason I really liked Explosions, probably because it is an amazing song.

So it may not be as bad as I think.

This is very sad. Looks like this type of dance music in the charts will have to stay back in 2005 sad.gif

Looks like they took one of the fanmade videos from Youtube (with a couple on a beach) laugh.gif I can't be 100% sure what channels it was on, but I saw it twice in half an hour the other evening.

@danG and @mdh

- I meant iTunes placings for On My Mind.

I'm not sure how much On My Mind sold on its first day on iTunes, but I'd guess that the new track will garner a similar number.

She's on Heart Radio tomorrow for an interview regarding the song, and it's getting played. Capital seem to be on board too.

In all fairness it's promotion hasn't started yet, so might climb back once airplay starts up.

I have fond memories of 2005 too, but the amount you bang on about it is ridiculous. Such a broken record.

I just tend to compare dance music to similar stuff from other years. I only mention 2005 because a lot of songs that sound like styles from the year are cropping up in the charts this year. If it was 2014 that I joined I would be mentioning the early 2000s a lot as big room house does to me sound a lot like early 2000s hard dance music.

Maybe I will ease off the comparisons with other years a bit, I do tend to use them a bit too much. smile.gif

I don't think this is the type of track that radio stations will play much unfortunately. Probably not 'relevant' enough sounding because of the similarities to last decades dance music that I mentioned. But I suppose Offaiah has been well liked by Radio 1 despite its 2006 style sound so it may happen.

Yes that's great. Most Precious Love vibes with the repeating bassline. Hopefully AirPlay will start soon. smile.gif

The popularity of this in Europe shows that the pan-European obsession with tropical house may soon be over.

Tomorrow the first solo single from a former "The Saturdays" member will be out. Mollie King is releasing "Back to you". It will be interesting to see how this one does. I expect it to have a good start on itunes with fanbase sales. The release is promoted on her own, as well as on the bands Facebook page - which has 1.5 millions fans.
I wonder if radio sations will playlist it upon release. Of course streaming will not be very high, so I think Top 40 on the official chart would be a big surprise.

Yes huge improvement on This Girl - an excellent disco house tune.

That Bob Marley remix - great funky house tune until they ruin it with the horrible pan pipe bit.
