Chart Commentary

Soaring to a #1 debut, Australian boyband 5 Seconds of Summer score their first #1 single with comeback track Want You Back. It becomes their ninth top 10 hit, two of which have made it as high as #2, but none made the top spot. Hits such as She Looks So Perfect and Good Girls proved to be long-runners, but were slow-burners and didn't do enough in any single week to hit #1. Meanwhile, their previous lead single She's Kinda Hot was unlucky, stalling at #3 for two weeks behind four individual tracks. Their last hit was Girls Talk Boys, almost two years ago, and it was particularly unlucky as it ended at #2, behind Britney Spears' surprise new single Make Me. Finally though, they achieve a #1 single with Want You Back, the first single from their long-awaited third album.

Now that all four Melodifestivalen heats are complete, every song is widely available in its studio form, meaning Benjamin Ingrosso's Dance You Off, which premiered in the first heat a month ago, finally enters my chart. It becomes his highest charting track in almost two years, since Fall In Love debuted at #1. Dance You Off's #2 debut instantly outdoes his MFest entry from last year - Good Lovin' peaked at #3, behind two other MFest songs from FO&O and Anton Hagman. This year, Benjamin leads the pack. Whilst nothing from this year's MFest has hit #1 yet like Frans in 2016 and FO&O in 2017, Dance You Off nevertheless continues the hit streak from the Swedish talent show. It's Benjamin's fifth top 10 hit, and first since One More Time hit #8 last year.

Benjamin Ingrosso
2016 24 Love You Again | NAS | 37-24-33-x (3 weeks)
2016 01 Fall In Love | NAS | 1-2-6-11-19-28-38-x (7 weeks)
2016 29 Crystal Clear | NAS | 29-x (1 week)
2017 03 Good Lovin' | NAS | 3-7-12-18-21-28-35-x (7 weeks)
2017 04 Do You Think About Me | NAS | 4-10-21-33-x (4 weeks)
2017 08 One More Time | NAS | 8-18-28-39-x (4 weeks)
2018 02 Dance You Off | NAS | 2-... (1+ weeks)

Continuing the MFest domination, Felix Sandman (stylised in capitals for whatever ridiculous reason) debuts just behind at #3. EVERY SINGLE DAY is his first solo release, previously having success as a member of FO&O, who dominated my chart with Gotta Thing About You, from last year's MFest. While that went all the way to #1, Felix's track hasn't quite matched that, but it's a solid debut nonetheless. If we include his FO&O hits, EVERY SINGLE DAY is Felix's fifth top 10 hit, and fourth in the past year.

FO&O / The Fooo Conspiracy
2016 07 My Girl | 3 | 7-13-24-37-x (4 weeks)
2016 20 Who Doesn't Love Love | 5 | 36-20-27-36-x (4 weeks)
2017 01 Gotta Thing About You | 6 | 1-1-2-5-5-9-11-20-21-24-27-24-33-x (13 weeks)
2017 01 So So Good | 7 | 1-3-11-16-22-29-32-37-x (8 weeks)
2017 03 Buzzkill | AT | 36-31-27-19-19-18-3-4-9-15-21-27-36-x (13 weeks)
2017 34 Hurt Like We Did | 8 | 34-x-40-x (2 non-consecutive weeks)

FELIX SANDMAN
2018 03 EVERY SINGLE DAY | 1 | 3-... (1+ weeks)

New at #10 and making her chart debut is Jessica Andersson, another contestant in MFest this year. The 44 year-old singer represented Sweden in Eurovision back in 2006 as part of Fame, and has also tried out as a soloist in Melodifestivalen four times before. Party Voice marks her fifth entry, and it qualified for the final from the third heat. Party Voice is the first song of hers that I've heard, and therefore is her first hit in my chart. To complete the MFest chat, Margaret's In My Cabana falls four places to #8 in its third week, and Olivia Eliasson's Never Learn is new at #19 - her first hit. Both songs, alongside Felix, will be hoping to qualify for the final in tonight's (Saturday) second chance round.

Elsewhere, Why Don't We's Trust Fund Baby jumps eight places to #6, re-entering the top 10 at a brand new peak. It's their best position to date, only competing with #40 hit These Girls. The American boyband also hold #2 in the album chart with the Invitation EP, stalling behind Camila Cabello's debut album which spends its eighth week at the top. One more week would see it match the longest consecutive run at the top (with Ulrik Munther's Rooftop), and non-consecutively it would become the joint second longest run, trailing only Troye Sivan's Blue Neighbourhood (16 non-consecutive weeks).
