Just like last year, I am going to have a lot of my first round nominations in the final semi (6 of that top 8 I believe). [Edit: swapped Turn Around and Kernkraft 400 after hearing the latter for the first time in ages] This post has been edited by jimwatts: 23rd February 2020, 11:04 AM |

50. Alvin Stardust - My Coo Ca Choo 46 pts Stopped by : Gary Glitter - I Love You Love Me Love Top points - Achabaan 23,Suedehead 10,AH Gold 8 Born as Bernard Jewry,Alvin already had six hit singles under his belt from 1961-62 under the name Shane Fenton and the Fentones with none of them charting any higher than number 19. 'My Coo Ca Choo' from 1973 was actually sung by its writer Peter Shelley under the name Alvin Stardust but when it became a hit he decided he didn't want to be known under that name so he got Shane Fenton to lip sync the song on television. Shane (the new Alvin Stardust) did sing the vocals on his subsequent records. Peter Shelley went on to have two top 5 hits under his own name with 'Gee Baby' and 'Love Me Love My Dog'. One of Alvin Stardust's sons is Adam F whose top 20 single from 1997,'Circles',was not so long ago entered by Jade into the BJSC. |

49. The Osmonds - Crazy Horses 47 pts
Stopped by : Chuck Berry - My Ding-A-Ling Top points - Achabaan 21,King Rollo 12,Suedehead 9 And from the same era comes an early environmental protest song with the crazy horses of the title being cars and lorries. The Osmonds first single in March 1972 only got to number 40 but big solo hits for Donny Osmond in June and September helped this one all the way up to no.2 in November. It's the only Osmonds hit to feature Jay Osmond on lead vocals. |

48. Dire Straits - Private Investigations 66 pts
Stopped by : Survivor - Eye Of The Tiger Top points - King Rollo 25,Suedehead 14,Achabaan 11 One of the reasons that 1979-1983 was the golden era for chart music is that songs like this and 'O Superman' by Laurie Anderson which featured in the last semi could get as high as number 2. Although it's a minute shorter than the album version,it's still almost six minutes long. There is no chorus, the lyrics are spoken rather than sung, the last three minutes are instrumental only and the whole thing is very quiet and delicate. It gave Dire Straits their highest chart position which they repeated in 1986 with 'Walk Of Life'. |

47. Ralph McTell - Streets Of London 83 pts
Stopped by : Mud - Lonely This Christmas / Status Quo - Down Down Top points - Darrenj 22,DASHER77 17,Suedehead 15 Originally recorded in 1969,it was this 1974 re-recording of the song that gave Ralph McTell his biggest hit. A subsequent single reaching number 36 prevented him becoming a one hit wonder. Another recording of 'Streets Of London' with Annie Lennox and the Crisis Choir gave Ralph a no.1 on the Physical Singles Chart in December 2017. |

46. True Steppers and Dane Bowers featuring Victoria Beckham - Out Of Your Mind 85 pts
Stopped by : Spiller - Groovejet (If This Ain't Love) Top points - girlsaloudjunkie 21,Alex! 20,Medelliam 14 Victoria Beckham is the only Spice Girl not to have a solo no.1 single, denied on this occasion after a fierce chart battle with Sophie Ellis-Bextor. |

45. Dr Hook - A Little Bit More 87 pts
Stopped by : Elton John & Kiki Dee - Don't Go Breaking My Heart Top points - DASHER77 22,King Rollo 20,Darrenj 19,Achabaan 19 This is another song I didn't know was a cover. The original version from 1973 was by Bobby Gosh. The song was Dr Hook's first hit since their other no.2,'Sylvia's Mother',four years previously and spent five weeks in the 2nd position. They finally got a well deserved no.1 in 1979 with 'When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman'. 'A Little Bit More' eventually became a no.1 single in 1999 when the boyband 911 recorded their version. |
