Salford City co-owner Gary Neville has been accused of trying to "steal" an English Football League spot by Accrington Stanley owner Andy Holt in a row between the pair on social media.

The exchange came after National League Salford signed striker Adam Rooney from Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen.

It's not as if they are the first club to do this. Crawley, Rushden & Diamonds and Fleetwood are just three examples.

I'm not a fan of the rich owners of smaller clubs spending their millions to get their teams up the leagues, as it usually ends in disaster - once the money is pulled out, either by death, or expense, or lack of interest, then the club doesn't have the infrastructure in place to replace it, and in cases like the aforementioned Rushden & Diamonds, and Gretna, they end up going out of business. Salford may be sailing now, but if their Class of '92 owners pull out, will there be enough fans to keep the turnstiles busy for it to stand on its own two feet? We shall see. There have been some organic success stories in the past few years, like AFC Wimbledon, who made the Football League in less than 10 years, but that only succeeded because it had thousands of fans in place from day one, and has continued to grow organically since then (plus, it had the brand recognition as well).

Interestingly, we could see something similar happening, in of all places, within Northern Irish football (which is confusingly known as the Irish League, even though teams from the south don't take part in it). The founder of online estate agent Purplebricks recently bought Larne FC, who are in the second tier of the Irish League, and has started to pump money into the club. Although from what I've heard so far he's not pumping too much money into it, and is trying to encourage organic growth whilst nudging it in a more positive direction, to avoid a Gretna situation.

Jeff Stelling choking on his breakfast after reading the first post... isn't it Hartlepool United not Hartlepool Town?!

Yes it is Hartlepool United, my mistake.

I'm not a fan of the rich owners of smaller clubs spending their millions to get their teams up the leagues either, Brett-Butler as we have seen with Crawley & Fleetwood.

Non league clubs to be relegated if they don’t comply with new FA rules

Well that's a bit ridiculous. Most non-league clubs don't have enough money for that just lying about.

It certainly is daft. The last thing we want to see is non-league clubs going bust because of having to comply with FA rules.
