BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: JosephStyles 26th November 2016, 02:42 PM

Looking like a fourth week for Clean Bandit, Sean Paul and Anne-Marie in the singles, as Rockabye looks set to stay at the top following Sunday night's X Factor promo. Rae Sremmurd will continue to fight for the top though, and expect a load of The Weeknd's tracks to impact in the singles chart this week now his album has been released. New entries might come from Charli XCX featuring Lil Yachty with After the Afterparty, Robin Schulz & David Guetta featuring Cheat Codes with Shed a Light, Calum Scott with Rhythm Inside and Rag'n'Bone Man with Human among others - time will tell as always!

The album chart looks to be an open race this week, with Little Mix and Michael Ball & Alfie Boe most notably still set to hang around. Big new releases come from The Weeknd. Kate Bush, Kylie Minogue, Busted and many others - can any of them dethrone Little Mix?

Kate Bush is easy number 1 album, but Weeknd at 6? Bet he was hoping for more than that.

Posted by: Doctor Blind 26th November 2016, 02:48 PM

Little Mix down to #5.

Posted by: John-James 26th November 2016, 02:51 PM

I didn't expect Kate Bush to have the #1 in the bag. I kind of hoped The Weeknd could grab it sad.gif

Posted by: 🎄cqmerqn🎄 26th November 2016, 02:52 PM

Streaming should help The Weeknd go number one though

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds 26th November 2016, 02:54 PM

Well it's definitely going to be a good week for new songs! (even if they are all by the same person)

Posted by: SKOB 26th November 2016, 03:09 PM

If LM somehow managed to get a second week that'd be biggest shock of the year. Bigger than Rick Astley's success

What about when Blossoms got a second week at #1 after being at #5 on the Thursday update?

Posted by: SKOB 26th November 2016, 03:18 PM

I'm more thinking about the competition and time of the year.

Posted by: Joe. 26th November 2016, 03:25 PM

I'm guessing Little Mix are behind very frontloaded Busted and Kylie sales. I expect they'll climb to about 3, with Weeknd making it to around 4.

Posted by: Mart!n 26th November 2016, 03:43 PM

Little Mix must have dropped quite a bit in sales, I was quite shocked to see them drop to #5, it was bound to drop quite a bit after all the pre-orders were added last week but not that drop.

Surprised Kate Bush is ahead of The Weeknd, for some reason I can't see Kylie in the top 5, it could be Michael Ball & Alfie Boe and Elvis along with Busted and Kate Bush

Posted by: Hadji 26th November 2016, 03:47 PM

The Weeknd's album is now available physically in HMV but not sure about supermarkets so I can see him increasing his sales a bit

Posted by: Danvember 26th November 2016, 03:53 PM

The Weeknd will be top 3 this week surely? Though I didn't realise Kate Bush had a new album out.

Streaming data hasn't been counted yet so once that's factored in there's a big boost for his album.

The Kate Bush album is a live one, not new material.

I really hope Minty has got it right for once. I want Kate Bush to have another number one album!

Neither did I but it will be very front-loaded as there will have been a lot of pre-orders from fans. We'll see what the gap is.

Posted by: MrIndependent 26th November 2016, 04:12 PM

That's a disappointing but unsurprising position for The Weeknd's album. With the physicals not hitting shelves until today and the fact that this time of the year the album charts are very dependent on physical sales, I'm not shocked that other albums that have been doing well physically are ahead of him. I can see the record settling into a top five position in the finish though. I think he chose the wrong time of the year to release.

Posted by: deepinside 26th November 2016, 04:24 PM

Starboy might get #1 album on Jan-Feb instead if the momentum still holds up and there's no big events/big albums coming out during that time.

Posted by: timjimlee 26th November 2016, 04:26 PM

Great to see Kate at the top, Album will be front-loaded but hopefully the margin is enough to keep it top this week.
Album has been near top of Pre-orders for a while now, was hoping it could achieve more than 50k sales and the fact that The Weeknd's Album sales are a third of the Sales of Kate so far looks promising for her.

Posted by: Bjork 26th November 2016, 04:49 PM

Actually i thought The Weeknd was gonna be even lower in todays mids
Since Sat mids dont include streams yet
And I thought the physical was not out til Sunday?
So @6 today is expected

More shocked at LM down to @5
Although Ball/Boe were beating them on Thu

Posted by: 🎄cqmerqn🎄 26th November 2016, 05:04 PM

Yeah I think The Weeknd is at 6 based on digital sales alone? I'd say number one is a cert for him!

Digital is his market though. He's never been a big physical seller. Streaming will help him climb a couple of places, but that doesn't effect the album chart like it does the singles chart.

Posted by: girl_from_oz 26th November 2016, 08:24 PM

Ahh but Weeknd will have a lot of streams, judging by spotify while Kate Bush won't have any

Posted by: Jonjo 26th November 2016, 08:41 PM

Busted are at #2, according to Mint!

:o

Posted by: 🎄cqmerqn🎄 26th November 2016, 08:58 PM

Busted also have the xfactor!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 26th November 2016, 09:47 PM

I really hope Kate Bush holds the top spot but with the Weeknd as high as 6 on streams alone Kate may lose the top spot, Busted will take number 3. Im finding hard to predict where Kylie will be this week.

Posted by: SmileyKylie 26th November 2016, 09:56 PM

I think Kylie will be around the 30's...... a mix of new album and a few sales of old album..... Problem with Kylie is she has only one new version... she didn't bother with a Vinyl etc which her fans want...... and the DVD of concert was released separately on ITunes.... so I don't think she will sell a lot to be honest.... maybe 5k at best?

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 26th November 2016, 10:45 PM

The Kylie album has no promotion to with it either and i think outside her core fanbase not many will know of its release.

Posted by: SmileyKylie 27th November 2016, 12:39 AM

I think Kylie has a slot on the X-factor final so she may pick up a few sales from that... its the same weekend as her Royal Albert Hall gig

Posted by: slowdown73 27th November 2016, 11:05 AM

Kylie reissue won't sell massively and it will drop quickly. Top 40 maybe at best. There's been virtually no promotion so apart from fans who would know it's out.

Posted by: Joe. 27th November 2016, 11:21 AM

Little Mix have jumped to 2 and Kate Bush has slowed.

Posted by: 🎄cqmerqn🎄 27th November 2016, 11:29 AM

I can imagine Mariah will enter the top 40 this week. Top 40 iTunes and just cracked Spotify Top 50

Posted by: liamk97 27th November 2016, 11:34 AM

If Little Mix receive a similar second week percentage drop as Get Weird (45%), they would be on track for 53k, which I would have thought would be enough for #1 if Kate Bush is the main competitor - I suspect she'll have solid sales for a live album but I'd be surprised if she could sell similar amounts of copies as Bruno and Olly's new albums did with it.

Posted by: 🎄cqmerqn🎄 27th November 2016, 11:38 AM

I think LM's percentage drop will be bigger due to their big sales debut

Posted by: Steve201 27th November 2016, 11:43 AM

I don't think they will drop THAT much considering its Xmas shopping season easily another 60-65k this week and no1 IMO!

His pre order is only 65 on Amazon. I don't think it'll add that much.

Posted by: timjimlee 27th November 2016, 02:08 PM

I think it could be a close one in the Album chart, Kate Bush, The Weeknd, Ball & Boe, Elvis & Little Mix should all be above 45k but can't see any of those going much more than 60k - Elvis down to £6.99 and currently best seller on Amazon is a dark horse as is Ball & Boe as these 2 will be the least front-loaded. The Weeknd's Sales tomorrow will be interesting though.

Kylie confirmed for Jonathan Ross Christmas special. airs on 10th December and will be filmed midweek before her concerts take place. Great line up to... Miranda Hart and David Walliams and Paul Hollywood....

then X-factor final on the Sunday?? 11th?

Christmas is the theme for next week on X-factor.... this could be good also for Kylie as they may use some of her album for intros etc.... ? Cowell loves a Minogue

Chart Performances of Live Albums has definitely dropped off in recent years for a variety of obvious reasons (one of which is surely the easy availability on-line of live Performances) but Kate Bush's fans waited 35 years for this Tour, she had only ever Toured once before, to say this is long-awaited is an understatement.

Posted by: tommie 28th November 2016, 12:47 PM

^ Exactly. I'm not sure if Kate will stay at number one through the week as she's inevitably front-loaded, but it should sell way more than the average live album.

Weeknd's album is still only 64 on Amazon, that's pretty poor for a new, Q4 release. Robbie, Olly, Little Mix, Metallica, Elvis were all top 20 before even being released!

Always a bit unsure what timeframe that "Best Sellers" list is based on though, it says "Updated hourly" but it is unclear what period it covers (as it was only available as a Pre-order right before Release it might be misleading).
I would agree, however, it does not look good for The Weeknd's chances of the top spot though.

Posted by: MrIndependent 28th November 2016, 04:38 PM

The Weeknd's album is out of stock on Amazon so not only is that not a good representation of how it could be selling but it also suggests that physical copies may still be getting produced. I don't think the label started pressing physicals of the record until late. What a mess. As suggested elsewhere in the thread he isn't a strong physical seller and I don't think his Amazon sales would add much to his overall total anyway.

Album sales must be pretty low because I can't believe KB would sell MORE with this live album than she did with her studio album.
The one before, Aerial (2005), opened with 90k but had hit single and her first album since 1993 AND the sales were much better in general.

I doubt that they're low, Kate Bush will just be really front loaded. Clearly Little Mix are closing in on her fast for her to have been a long way ahead with them at #5 on Saturday, whilst now they're #2 and only 5k behind her. I wouldn't be surprised if the next few albums are selling more on a daily basis than Kate's live album is now.

I think that comment is very debtable in relation to Kylie.

Poor start for Busted, Susan Boyle and Rumer in the album chart, i think all will end up dropping through the week and i predict number 11 for Busted, 21 for Susan Boyle and 31 for Rumer.

Little Mix are holding up wonderfully well on their 2nd week considering their excellent sales sales last.

That's because the older generation have been collecting records for many years and have collections which they wish to add to. I am one of them and do not wish to download or stream. I have not bought a single for many years. Each to their own.

To an extent I agree, the growth of streaming has meant younger people are more happy to stream an entire album rather than go out and buy a £10 CD or buy it digitally.

But the likes of Elvis, Alfie Boe, Andre Rieu etc, have always sold well at this time of year, older, established artists always sell a lot before Christmas.

Bruno and The Weeknd may well sell big numbers in the coming months but I never expected them to have huge debuts.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 29th November 2016, 12:24 AM

I agree, its harder and harder to sell albums to the younger generation, for example my daughter is 15 and a huge Little Mix fan, i said i would buy her the album if she wanted it and she was no its alright i dont like cd's i will just listen to the songs i like from the album online. Keep in mind, last year she was extremely keen to get the cd of their previous album, i know this is only one person but i think it reflects many many others of her age.

I myself am a huge fan of music and have bought thousands of cd;s but i notice i am buying less and less, this is for 2 reasons, their isnt as much music released that i like and also i listen to albums online before i buy them and luckily for me any albums i buy i know i will like, i dont miss the days of buying albums based on singles only to find out the rest of the album is terrible.

Back to the chart, im happy to see Kylie back in the chart with the re-release, i thought the album sold much better than expected last year, in general Christmas albums dont do well with the odd exceptions such as Mihcael Buble or the one released by Rod Stewart, other artists such as Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson sold much much less than Kylie. Kylie as i have said before has nothing to prove, she as had an amazing career and her albums are still doing better in the UK than many other females of time and after, Madonna, Britney Spears been examples.

I really expected Busted to be guaranteed a top 5 album and i hope it goes well for them but their new single is awful i much preferred the McBusted era. I really wanted Kate Bush to hold number 1.

Mariah Carey looking like in with a chance of returning to the top 40, i hope she has the biggest Christmas hit again this year like last year.

Little Mix had higher sales than any 'older generation' act of the year so far bar David Bowie though, and he wouldn't have sold as much as he did if it weren't for the timing of his death. Albums with older target audiences always sell well especially at this time of year, it doesn't exactly mean none of the younger acts can sell albums any more.

Also, The Weeknd's last album only sold a bit over 30k and was released at a less competitive time of year, I wouldn't say 'Starboy' is underperforming tbh.

The Black Friday promotional price for Elvis CD of £6.99 on amazon has ended this morning, it has gone back up to £9.49 - expect Ball & Boe to overtake it again in the Best Sellers. Little Mix Deluxe edition is only position below Ball & Boe (also the regular edition has gone back up £9.99, it is still in Top 10 Best Sellers but will probably drop as well). It is a shame for Little Mix they don't have much in the way of Promotion this week as they could secure a second week with a boost from somewhere, they could still do it though.

Posted by: Sinner 29th November 2016, 09:48 AM

As time goes on the singles chart seems to reflect more and more the taste of younger people and the album chart is being driven by sales to older generations. I'm not sure what that means for the future of the album chart. It may end up being a mostly vinyl chart with sales of a few hundred being enough to make number 1.

There’s been quite a trend over the past 20 years of R&B/urban leaning acts performing quite badly with albums released in late Q4, mainly because they don’t jump out as obvious Christmas presents for the most part I suppose.

Sometimes they pick up the following year or have good longevity despite an underwhelming peak, but yeah, he’s a prime candidate to get lost in the Xmas rush I reckon. But yeah, the album will hang around for ages.

Posted by: pippa 29th November 2016, 02:23 PM

While i am thrilled to see Little Mix doing so well i really did want Kate Bush to attain another number 1 album as its been so long since she had a number 1. Sales are close in the top 5 but its now very likely Kate Bush will not be number 1 and based on that i am happy for Little Mix to hold on.

Olly Murs holding up extremely well which i welcome. Busted, Susan Boyle and Kylie all dropping in the newest update and this trend is something that will most likely continue through the week. I am surprised but not disappointed to see the Weeknd drop from yesterday but i have no doubt when the physical comes available a climb is certain as many of the songs are in the top 100 which indicates interest in the album.

Posted by: Joe. 29th November 2016, 02:25 PM

I think Urban artists like Weeknd would perform pretty much the same any time of the year. It would have been an easy #1 most of the year, but I don't think it gets a sales hike in Q4 lots of artists get because of physicals. Even artists like Drake or Frank Ocean, I don't think would benefit much from Q4 and I could even have seen them being beaten by large artists like Little Mix if they were.

Posted by: SKOB 29th November 2016, 02:27 PM

I wouldn't call five songs in top 40 underperforming... his music is just not for physical market

I am surprised but not disappointed to see the Weeknd drop from yesterday but i have no doubt when the physical comes available a climb is certain as many of the songs are in the top 100 which indicates interest in the album.

The physical has been out since Saturday :')

Michael & Alfie will take the #2 album tomorrow, they are selling thee times as much as Kate Bush sales she did yesterday. I think the Weeknd will chart between 7 to 10. Nice to see Little Mix taking the lead, its the highest album sold yesterday.

Top 5 singles are looking set in concrete, maybe not for James Arthur, Maroon 5 could end up as a non mover at #5, once all data is collated.

Posted by: liamk97 29th November 2016, 03:12 PM

Hopefully Kate Bush can remain Top 5 - she's on track for #4 but could be #5 if Olly Murs keeps climbing.

Little Mix should hold onto #1 but I wouldn't be surprised if Michael & Alfie overtook them next week, only to possibly remain #2 in favour of The Rolling Stones.

Yeah, to expand on what I said earlier I think it'll go

this week (2nd) :

#1 Little Mix
#2 Michael & Alfie
#3 Elvis

next week (9th):
#1 Rolling Stones
#2 Michael & Alfie
#3 Little Mix

16th
#1 Michael & Alfie
#2 Little Mix
#3 Rolling Stones

23rd
#1 Little Mix (assuming they have more promo/XF before this)
#2 Michael & Alfie
#3 Elvis

The Weeknd simply cannot be bombing this hard. Probably some sales are missing or something. Would be shocked if he really missses the top 5 on Friday.

Yeah I think that sounds like a sensible prediction, baring any unconfirmed promo slots that may be announced in the meantime. It definitely feels like it's between Little Mix and Michael & Alfie for Christmas #1 in the albums; they're certainly the main stand outs of who stands a chance of hitting 100k+ this December, potentially Elvis as well and maybe Robbie given it seems there is a lot of promo coming up for him (an ITV show and potentially a performance before the New Year's Eve fireworks on the BBC).

The Christmas Number 1 Album has always been a multi-week number 1, likely to continue that trend this year. Agree with Joe on the top 3 Albums but may be in different order dependent on how the promotion goes.

The Weeknd's album looks like it'll top out at roughly 32k sales, which is less than Beauty Behind the Madness debuted with. The messy rollout isn't helping (only 19% of his sales are physical), but I think everyone overestimated the hype of the album unfortunately. I suspect it will repeak at a later date and have great longevity though.

I don't know if it was posted, but Kate Bush's album was only the 13th largest selling album yesterday. Interesting.

The interest in the album is clearly there for the entire album to be in the singles top 100; the problem in the end is he has picked the wrong time of the year to release. I'm disappointed but not worried.

You'd think their Greatest Hits would have done given it's 4x platinum / million seller but it was only #1 for one week!

Compilations are rather outdated everywhere else in the world and died / are dying - don't block major releases. For some reason the Uk clutches onto them. 100s of rightful albums would have been denied because of a compilations of chart hits whacked onto a collection.

That's simply not true. The NOW compilations regularly chart in the Top 5. What they don't do is top the chart on a regular basis.

ETA: Debut chart positions of the last 5 NOWs--4,4,7,5,7

All the TEAs from the singles get credited to the original artists, so their pure sales numbers are the same as their SPS numbers.

Speaking of farcical charts, Little Mix finally knocked Drake off of the album streaming chart #1 after 27 consecutive (28 non-consecutive) weeks at number 1.

Clearly the addition of streaming is really representative and works REALLY WELL on the albums chart.

What you're missing here is that albums were barely even a thing in 1958. Look at the album chart from around that time and earlier and you'll see the top 10 (or top 5 as it was at one point) was mostly made up of soundtrack albums, with the odd addition of Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. It spent so long at the top of the chart because there was literally no competition, was probably only selling a few hundred copies a week (although of course we'll never know exactly), so there would have been no point in creating a compilation chart to leave the official album chart pretty much empty. laugh.gif

That's too cool promo for that:

Dec.5 - Brits Icon Concert on ITV1 (1:45)
Dec.6 - Royal Variety Performance BBC1
Dec.8 - BBC Radio 2: Concert + interviews + live performance
Dec.9 - Key 103 Christmas Live
Dec.12 - BBC Music Awards - Dec.12

Lovely to see that Starboy has climbed back into the top five, but positions 5-7 in the albums are very close and it might easily end up falling out again.

Glad that Little Mix have continued to extend their lead; I recognised that the Black Friday sale on Amazon had ended and their stability on there had started to decrease because of it. I was worried that Michael Ball & Alfie Boe might have started to sell more because of that, but so far so good.

There's so many christmas gift bundles with the album on their official website, I imagine loads of people are going there to buy the album rather than Amazon.

Thank you for confirming guys, Should stay #1 for the second week then really wanted that for them with it being 15 years since a girlband did it.

They aren't doing too bad on amazon, Deluxe is still #5 and the standard is around #12 or #13 I think.

Starboy could end up selling more than what BBTM did in its first week

Posted by: pippa 30th November 2016, 03:35 PM

Based on their previous album Get Weird, Little Mix always appear to sell better towards the end of the week as Get Weird in general ended up with a higher position on Friday than it was in the midweek chart information through the week. Based on that i hope they can fend off Ball and Boe to hold the number 1 but the battle is close.

Robbie Williams has some serious promotion lined up, while i dont like any of the material from the album that i have heard and wont be buying the album myself its worth mentioning that he knows how to market and promote an album and many other could and should take a leaf out of his book.

Busted should cling onto the number 10 position by the skin of their teeth, unfortunately the same cant be said for Susan Boyle and Kylie who will most likely fall for the remainder of the week.

Not far at all but Closer is selling more sad.gif

I Feel It Coming is absolute tune so I hope it does make top 10 this week. Human is alright and will get there in the future anyway.

Posted by: twentyonemdh 30th November 2016, 04:40 PM

Both are tunes but Human is preferable for the sake of a new entry in the top 10.

I never expected Kate Bush to pick up many streaming points anyway, but I've just been told by a friend (who's a big Kate Bush fan) that she hasn't allowed streaming on Spotify or Apple. Does that mean there's no streaming for Before The Dawn at all?

Looking at today's update, compared with Monday's (which led to various media reporting that she was heading for #1 on Friday), Kate Bush has only increased her chart units by 18.0% in two days, which is why she's been overtaken by Little Mix (63.3% increase) and Ball & Boe (64.8% increase). At this rate, she'll be overtaken by Elvis & RPO (59.1% increase) as well by Friday. On the plus side, I don't think Kate Bush has ever had a #4 or #5 peaking album, has she? (Not up to Aerial, anyway.)

This will be her 11th top 5 album, impressive! I know Madonna has the most when it comes to females (20), but is Kate the runner-up?

Kylie Minogue has 11.

Yes - 11, 8 studio albums and 3 compilations, so yea she is #2.

1. Madonna : 20
2. Kylie Minogue : 11
3. Celine Dion : 10
3. Kate Bush : 10 (about to get 11th)

this is probably it.

It's a climber, not a new entry!

Posted by: The Hit Parade 30th November 2016, 07:37 PM

It's true that Before The Dawn isn't available to stream. I'm not sure whether the album would benefit from streams of the studio versions of the track, though I presume those would be relatively few anyway.

Regarding Little Mix, I think their new sound is quite a bit aimed to UK market as they really underperfomed in the US, #25 compared to two top ten's and #13 they have previously achieved

What new sound would that be?

What position is Christmas by Buble?

But it's never been in the top 40 before, and the Official Chart on Radio 1 covers the top 40 meaning it's theoretically a new entry in the top 40.

Robbie Williams has some serious promotion lined up, while i dont like any of the material from the album that i have heard and wont be buying the album myself its worth mentioning that he knows how to market and promote an album and many other could and should take a leaf out of his book.

If only it were that simple. Such huge promo is only granted to very few.

Surely that wouldn't comply with the chart rules? Or would it? The tracks on Before The Dawn are unique tracks; live recordings from 2014. If you could clock up streaming points for those tracks by playing the original studio versions, that would seem daft to me, but I suppose you could argue they're different versions of the same songs, for the purposes of the singles chart, rather than the albums chart. Anyone able to clarify the rules on this?

I've checked the chart rules (probably should have done that before) and whilst streams can be attributed to multiple studio and one Greatest Hits album, live albums are explicitly excluded from that so only live versions count. It's not totally clear what happens when an act has multiple live versions of the same songs but that doesn't apply in this case anyway.

It's Page 9 of this if you wanted to check: http://www.officialcharts.com/media/650607/official-uk-charts-album-chart-rules-may-2016.pdf

No idea what their lead is, but I've been told the girls are on 49k now. Great second week sales tbh! Looking at 55k week, outselling DNA's and Salute's first week sales in week 2!

Posted by: BrookeOlivia 1st December 2016, 04:28 PM

Little Mix are killing it right now, I think this will keep selling great over next few weeks could past 100k one week on lead up to Christmas as I am pretty sure an x factor final performance is going to happen for them.

Posted by: pippa 1st December 2016, 04:38 PM

I think the album should easily sell in the region of 400,000+ by year end.

As per last week there was a slight slowdown for Little Mix on Wednesday/Thursday but will be surprised if they don't have enough to secure the top spot tomorrow.

This would be an excellent result given "Get Weird" sold 388,593 in 2015, it would definitely indicate a stronger era (ie not just because they got to number 1 this time).
