In second place we have janet.. In the build up to the album's release, Janet found herself in the midst of a huge bidding war for her contracts. She eventually settled with Virgin, with a record deal an estimated $40 million, which also made her the world's then-highest paid musical act. For this album, Janet attempted and succeeded in breaking away from the stigma attached to her, that led people to believe she was only achieving success due to her ties with the Jackson family. To break this, she wrote all lyrics for the album, co-produced every song on it and dropped her surname from the title, making it further clear that she was her own woman and artist. The album moved away from the harsh industrial sounds of the era before it, and offered more hip hop, opera, house and jazz. Lyrically, the album focuses on female sexuality and sexual experiencesm, which again showed a move away from what she was previously known for musically. It was yet another #1 album for Janet, and actually racked up the highest first week sales for a female artist at that time on the US charts. It remains one of only seven albums in history to produce six top-ten hits on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The singles were: 'That's the Way Love Goes', 'If', 'Again', 'Because of Love', 'Any Time, Any Place', 'You Want This', 'Whoops Now' and 'What'll I Do'.

And this all means that your winner and Buzzjack's favourite Janet Jackson album is her 6th studio album, The Velvet Rope. Her contract doubled from the previous era; $80 million meant it became the largest recording contract in history at that time, and it was worth every single penny. For this album, Janet opened up about her emotional breakdowns and long-term case of depression. She developed a concept album, looking inwards at the self. It is an album about needing to feel special and wanted. Throughout the album, Janet explores depression, self-worth, social networking, domestic violence, sexuality, sexual orientation and same-sex relationships. It helped to propel Janet's status as a sex symbol and helped cement her reputation as a gay icon as she received the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Music. The album fuses a plethora of genres and styles and is considered to be her most mature album and one of her most influential. The album was a huge commercial and critical success and spawned huge singles that went on to win Grammys and make Billboard history. They were: Got 'til It's Gone', 'Together Again', 'I Get Lonely', 'Go Deep', 'You' and 'Every Time'

And there we have it. 11 extraordinary albums from this legend. Thank you all for taking part, and I hope it's helped you to discover more of her back-catalogue! Here are the full results:
