Hello and welcome to PHASE ONE of the 70th edition of the Buzzjack Song Contest, coming to you this month from Darpabrak, historic capital city of Altyr Muunilinst.

As per usual, some RULES:

01 It is advisable that you check your entry against the http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=161658. This helpful and well thought out list allows you to have a fair idea of whether your song is likely to be in danger of being vetoed, so for both your own mental health and also Silas' rapidly receding hairline we implore you not to send anything that is an auto-veto and try and be as inspired as possible.
02 It is illegal, not to mention immoral, to send a song that has already been sent to the contest before, if in doubt please check the http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=104463&st=0&p=2860165&#entry2860165 thread, which provides a handy list of all songs entered to the previous 69 editions of the contest.
03 You are also unable to send a song by any of the following acts, as a result of their finishing within last months top 3: Blonde, The Midnight and TALA.
04 If a song has been entered or chosen to enter the Eurovision Song Contest it is also banned from being entered.
05 It is also illegal to send the same artist as you sent last month, it is also advisable not to send an artist from the previous months contest either, it is not illegal to do so but increases your chances of being vetoed and also means you will be branded a cheap, uninspired hoebag and have your lands ceased by the Altyr security forces.

Beyond that if you wish to enter you must have been a registered member of Buzzjack for more than 3 months (unless you are Hendinia, Budtar, or the unfortunately named Land Of The Shamrock, who all failed to vote in the final and suffer a one month ban from competing) and also have a registered country within the BJSC system.

If you pass all of the above, then it's time to PM ME: Johnkm with the following information

01 Your Country Name - despite competing for almost 4 years I still don't know who half of y'all are
02 The name of the artist/act you wish to send
03 The name of the song you wish to send
04 A link to a source where this song may be listened to or viewed, ie. Youtube, Soundcloud, Vimeo, etc.
05 A link to a place where said song many be acquired for the purposes of making an MP3 pack

The chosen representative for Altyr Muunilinst will receive an automatic pass to the final, as to may the chosen representative of Eledan, if conditions allow. The rest of you will be forced to submit yourselves to the humiliating process of semi final qualification, which will take place after the confirmation period ends on THURSDAY OCTOBER 30TH AT 23:59 (GMT). Please do not try to confirm after this date, your song will not be accepted, but you may still be charged (with being a foolish idiot and laughed off the internet by me).

The Egabbaci team in charge of our entry this month have gained the legal right to enter under the name 'Persephonia'. (i.e. I decided I don't really want to enter as Egabbac in case it CURSES US like the last time we entered under a different name).

Coming for a midtable near you. Assuming we aren't vetoed.

If not, then why post the new music on the forum in the first place if you're so protective over it? Surely the reason is for people to hear, enjoy and share it? If not then what's the reason... No one has to pm you to ask permission to use a song that you have discussed on the forum and who's to say said person didn't find it before you but didn't feel the need to make a thread?

In all seriousness, posting a thread on it doesn't mean you automatically own the song and people have to ask you first. As Bal said, don't post it if you don't want other people to make discoveries from it and then potentially send it here. Fair enough if someone stole the entry despite *knowing* you were planning to send it, but evidently that didn't happen and it was a simple clash. I don't bother posting threads for my BJSC potentials purely for this reason. Quite reluctant to even link to them in my chart.

I have to admit I have avoided PM help lately, posting threads about some artists and/or potentials for BJSC until after I've entered them for this reason (not that it's happened to me). If I saw one of my potentials later being posted about in a genre forum, I'd feel obliged not to enter it as a result because it wouldn't be a discovery for members on here then. But then again, that's just me, I prefer being inspired as opposed to just nabbing a song posters on here are likely already know and/or pushing veto boundaries in the aim for success.

look, i'm someone who vocally states what i think and hold certain morals in high regard. i don't like sneakiness and disloyal acts. quite what the point of saying "i don't own the song" is, obviously i don't own it? are you under the impression that i thought i did? i evidently see things differently from the rest of you guys but i'm not ever about to change how i feel about or react to things.

evidently one is best just to not post about any new music ever and let the rest of the forum die (as it slowly and continuously is) with the aim of seeking self-glory paramount

Why? Because one song got taken from you you're making some grandiose self-defeating statement? There's plenty of music that will probably never get entered here to post about.

Farming for tracks on Buzzjack is not a very worthwhile process when there are so many other places to look, that's why most of us don't do it. Doesn't mean the songs that have been posted are off limits. I wouldn't enter one if I found it that way but if I later find that a thread's been posted and it wasn't very popular, what should stop someone from entering something they independently decided would be good for us to hear? Aside from the veto of course.

Only thing I don't get here is why Mikey is being blamed, he hasn't even responded to any Jake threads recently. Poor Mikey.

I would also never send a song that I discovered via a thread on BuzzJack (my last entry HAD a thread but I discovered it elsewhere, even so finding the thread about it made me slightly more reluctant to send) but I don't see why it's being assumed that this was the case. Especially if the song in question is the most recent Jake thread, as I've seen that song in a few other places on the Internet when searching for entries.

Which is where the 'you don't own it' cries are coming from I think.

I too get your point Jake and can fully understand why you might have that opinion. However the last part was completely unnecessary though as it might not offend one, but that cannot be said for every individual out there. Keeping it in a manner without having to resort to call another individual to do one in a more aggressive tone isn't really tolerated here at all and I hope you understand that.

I remember when I entered The Naked and Famous' "Young Blood" into the very first Unknown Pleasures literally a few hours ahead of Jake posted about it, and feeling terrible that I'd potentially taken his entry. I think I then also took West's entry a couple of contests later, but I let him have it and searched for something else.
Could it not just be a coincidence that he found the track elsewhere at the same time as Jake?

Well even post-edit i can't defend it. Just thought it was odd to talk about Mikey's etiquette in this context when no one knows if he even viewed that thread, found the song before Jake did and planned to send it then, and was then called out in the way in which he was here. Everyone seems to be claiming that he's done this heinous sneaky action with no actual evidence to back it up, which if i was Mikey would make me feel pretty shit.

Jake raises an interestingish point but it'll forever be impossible to tell if people discovered the song through a thread on buzzjack or if they had known about it before so it's useless making a big deal when someone else sends it (and then there's the way in which he did it, which as you rightly said is a different issue).

Just to be 100% clear on this... it's this bit of Jake's post that I think is a valid point, I do think everyone holds back posting threads and thus damage forum activity because they are worried someone else will "steal" it and thus the thread starter won't get their entry. The gentleman's etiquette bit I mentioned was possibly a little (unintentionally) harsh on Mikey reading it back, I didn't mean to imply he definitely HAD stolen an entry by those means as such, more that I think there is a certain unwritten fairness in checking whether there is a thread or not before submitting. It's not foolproof though obviously.



(edit... thinking it through further, I guess the whole checking for threads thing actually would just result in posters desperately trying to start the threads on every decent new track just so they could have first shot at it here. Maybe not such a great thing after all!)

Having previously been on the end of one of Jake's rants it is a little disheartening and just made me think "just how seriously do you take this?!".

If I posted a song that I was intending to send to this or one of the other contests on here and someone else sent it first as a result of me posting it, I really wouldn't care. If anything I'd be happy that people have taken notice of something I've posted and feel the song is good enough to want to share wider. When I wasn't first to 'Sunlight' the other month (a song I adored and really wanted to send) I just took it as essentially having two entries in the contest.

BJSC should be a bit of fun and reading stuff like this makes me think people should lighten up a bit!

look not everyone deals with things as passively as you do, i'm more direct and ultimately confrontational. i have posted with mikey on forums for over a decade now, so i feel i know him well enough and how he goes about bjsc, could i ultimately be wrong? yes of course but i use my best judgement and acumen before deciding what decision to come to. i have noticed he's gone for entries posted by others in indie before and have never seen him enter something like this/from the blogs where the song in question was posted. on that basis of using my brain i called him. should i have sworn? perhaps not. is that how i felt at the time though? absolutely.

i'm not some eternally rude, bulldozer of a person, i'm very openly expressive, sometimes wrong but a lot of the time right and i trust my judgement.

If I were to hypothetically make a ten minute medley of 30 'almost Rontvian entries' from the last seven years, would it be vetoed?

(Some of the songs included definitely wouldn't pass the veto but if it's only a 15-20 second clip maybe there's a loophole.)

((this isn't happening by the way, I'm just intrigued - although said hypothetical entry would sound like a complete mess as the genre's are so different))
