27th March 1971 : Clodagh Rodgers - Jack In The Box (4 weeks at # 1) Rating : 8 / 10 UK chartrun : 23-10-6-4-5-10-17-26-35 Third # 1 hit for Clodagh Rodgers. Fifth consecutive # 1 for British Eurovision entries. Honestly all previous entries had a strong chances for # 1, but some from them (like my favourite "I Belong" in 1965 year) didn't reach UK top 10 and became illegal for imaginary chart topper here. Fresh songs in UK top 10 : Andy Williams - (Where Do I Begin) Love Story - 7/10 Olivia Newton-John - If Not For You - 6/10 Elvis Presley - There Goes My Everything - 5/10 Ray Stevens - Bridget The Midget - 4/10 CCS - Walkin' - 3/10 John Lennon and Plastic Ono Band - Power To The People - 2/10 Dave and Ansel Collins - Double Barrel - 1/10 |

29th May 1971 : Severine - Un Banc, Un Arbre, Un Rue (1 week at # 1) Rating : 7 / 10 Strong Eurovision winner, but 7 points was enough only for 9th place in my 1971 ranking. Well, apart from The Poppy family (which I never got hear when I lived in Singapore) all the rest of the 1970 chart-toppers were huge faves of mine and 5 of the 7 topped my charts. So good!
1971, Elton is a classic, I bought Apeman in a charity shop in 1972 as Id never heard it, Rose Garden, Jack In A Box, and Love Story were all Singapore faves of mine at the time, and Ringo I liked a lot when I got to hear it in 1972. Tony Christie was another one I first heard when I was back in the UK - on the Christmas year-end rundown I recorded on the radio, and I liked it. Severine I never got to hear for years and years - 1976 I think! The only 2 Eurovisions I missed from 1967 onwards were 1970 and 1971. |

10th July 1971 : Middle Of The Road - Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep (3 weeks at # 1) Rating : 6 / 10 UK chartrun : [36-16-1-1-1-1-1-2-2-3-8-8-13-22-22-29-24-30-35-39] [38-39] Honestly I can't explain the huge success of this single in European charts. It's very cheesy track, even for me who love Scooch and YVA. Fresh songs in UK top 10 : New World - Tom-Tom Turnaround - 5/10 Lobo - Me And You And A Dog Named Boo - 4/10 T Rex - Get It On - 4/10 Greyhound - Black And White - 3/10 Dave and Ansel Collins - Monkey Spanner - 1/10 This post has been edited by Last Dreamer: 5th July 2023, 11:23 AM |

I can explain Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep - I bought it in Singapore based on one hearing
It was an earworm and sounded like nothing else before, sort of like The Chipmunks, but not quite. Sally was huge amongst teenage boys and dads with her hotpants, and kids loved it. Topped my charts for months. Then I got back to the UK where everyone had got sick of hearing it as it hung around the charts into 1972. I'm still fond of it, but err it's not going down in history as a timeless classic |

2 more songs I love, I just got back into the UK in September 1971 and we were staying with my grandma and grandad, and my Aunty Ann, aged 15, had just bought the New Seekers track which I absolutely loved enough to buy it myself. The chorus of vocal noises reminded me of the muppets in Sesame Street which I'd been watching in Singapore as a new TV show. Nancy & Lee were huge faves of my mum (and I inherited her love for them) - this track was quite naughty and innuendo-based but not enough to get it banned, hooray!

loved Middle Of The Road, bought it at the time, and got Johnny Reggae for Xmas, and I'm not even going to try and justify it by saying I was only 13. It's quirky, nothing like anything before or since. Banks Of The Ohio not my fave Olivia song, but it's nice enough.
