Woah, that's a big one. Had been expecting it for some years but seeing Castro gone feels unreal. Like, he was one of the few people left who really felt like a historical icon as in not quite belonging to this time. Guess Kissinger and Gorbachev are the main
big players we have left from top-level Cold War politics now.

Definitely one of the more interesting communists, swaying between dictatorship and 'hero of the people', I'd have to be much more of an expert to write a good analysis on him.

One of those people it always amazed me was still alive. Lived through 50 years of the CIA actively trying to assassinate him.

The fact that Cuban refugees are celebrating his death should tell you everything you need to know about the man. The numerous death squads, his human rights abuses, his rounding up of gays for horrific treatment, and his cracking down on religious freedom, there's so much pain that he's inflicted on that island.

Not that my view is shared my many people who live on my island, as the nauseating tribute from President Higgins goes to show.

I'm not going to celebrate his death, but nor am I going to mourn it either.

All that and he dies of old age.

Well that was anticlimactic

For all the astounding work he did - the Cuban health service has saved *millions* of lives across the developing world and has made breakthroughs that constitute actual medical miracles, almost solely thanks to the overwhelming support he gave it - it's quite difficult to get away from the uncountable human rights abuses he oversaw.

I think it's right to look at both sides of his rule and not just be biased by one side who dismiss him as a dictator and others who ignore the human rights abuses!
