Calvin to smash!

Is emeli not releasing until later on?

Posted by: mdh 15th September 2016, 11:11 PM

7am.

New thread, wonder if we'll break 400 again?

Posted by: timjimlee 15th September 2016, 11:30 PM

Will James Arthur knock The Chainsmokers off the top spot before Calvin or Emeli?

Posted by: Tombo 15th September 2016, 11:32 PM

This to somehow smash this week!

81. Say It to Me (Tom Demac Mix) - Pet Shop Boys

Posted by: ___∆___ 16th September 2016, 12:56 AM

Gavin James and Dua Lipa both 59p this week so hopefully could challenge for Top 40 next week.

PSB seem to be doing better with this release than any others from their new album?

Posted by: ___∆___ 16th September 2016, 01:20 AM

Mollie King 'Back To You' also added to the 59p club this week dance.gif Hope it gets a decent boost.

Posted by: cqmerqn 16th September 2016, 05:26 AM

I don't like Calvin's new song. I just cringe whenever I hear his voice on his tracks, I find it so 'cheesy'..

I can't see this going top 3 actually, considering there's no support from fan-base buys.

Posted by: omrimayo 16th September 2016, 06:09 AM

Jesus. A smash. So not Emeli sandé! It's like the bomb and the lyrics are so relatable. Yas!

Posted by: gavindeejay 16th September 2016, 06:31 AM

64. Calvin Harris - My Way

It's not his best, but on first listen I prefer it to TIWYCF.

Posted by: AcerBen 16th September 2016, 06:32 AM

Emeli's single is amazing. #1 please!

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 16th September 2016, 06:47 AM

Hope Emeli smashes with Hurts, incredible comeback!

The Emeli Sande song should do well and deservedly so. It sounds a very 'autumn' song if that makes any sense... laugh.gif

50 Calvin Harris My Way

Posted by: cqmerqn 16th September 2016, 07:21 AM

I really like Emeli's new song. After hearing both songs, I predict:

Emeli: #3
Calvin: #8

It doesn't matter on New Music Fridays, because big new releases like Emeli will get the same amount of plays as TOTD. It's actually better NOT to be TOTD on New Music Friday. For example Hair by Little Mix got the same amount of plays on the Friday as Pink's Just Like Fire, which was the TOTD on the same day, but they then benefited from being TOTD 2 days later. So got double the exposure on release week.

I do, however, think due to such a long break think Emeli will not match expectations at all.

slow start for emeli but big climb now... think it started slow cos it's not a "single", couldn't find it at first, but has to be bought off the album
Hurts #53 & 83

Posted by: ElectroBoy 16th September 2016, 08:27 AM

my guess is Chainsmokers will remain number 1 overall due to streams, James Arthur will be number 1 on sales - as he is taking some fairly big climbs now that he is getting radio plays. Calvin Harris will be Number 2 on both

Emeli - top 30 debut (officially)

Calvin now #14

Emeli #42 & 57

not impressed with the calvin harris track on first listen. such a shame james arthur has no chance of challenging for the official number 1 (bar a miracle turnaround with streaming)

They need to get their heads out of Calvin's arse. On the other side, she'll have the biggest selling album of the year

Posted by: Mango 16th September 2016, 09:20 AM

Yeah, echoing most people's comments on here that Calvin's single is pretty average but Emeli's is brilliant! Both should go Top 10, though I'm hoping Top 3 for Emeli, she deserves it with a comeback single like that.

Posted by: omrimayo 16th September 2016, 09:43 AM

Calvin 10 and Emelie 16 combined. She will pass him soon, I'm hoping, She was out after him.

Well I guess autumn has begun as of today so it's fitting. There's no way that the heavy rain and thunder of last night can be considered as summer!

---------------

As I could have guessed Calvin Harris is already in the top 10, I think sometimes it's his name alone that gets him so high in the charts. I haven't heard his new song yet but I'm sure the formula is the same for this one as well.

Posted by: BillyH 16th September 2016, 12:55 PM

Was gonna grab a copy of Everything I Do, but the only one available digitally on iTunes or Spotify is the full-length 6:33 album version, not the much shorter 4-minute edit that was on the music video, 7" and CD single, played on radio and the hit everyone actually bought at the time, which is a shame. I like the song but not enough to keep my attention a whole two-minutes-thirty more than I should.

Posted by: Hassaan 16th September 2016, 02:07 PM

James Arthur at #1! I didn't expect that at all. It'll be interesting to see if he can hold onto that for the whole week. If so, and his streaming is decent, he could get a #1 officially which would be the first a male solo act from The X Factor has done so since Zayn with Pillowtalk, although if you wish to discount him as he was in 1D, it'd be the first since his own winners single "Impossible" (excluding that, Olly Murs' Troublemaker in 2012).

So just to be clear you don't want me posting this in future as you'd rather do so yourself within this weekly thread?

I saw the This Morning interview earlier and fair play he doesn't seem like the douche he once was. I'm all for surprise chart hits (if they're not bad) and a James Arthur #1 would be far more shocking/hilarious than a Calvin one. Also Hassaan, Ben Haenow got to #1 didn't he? tongue.gif

I highly doubted Emeli would get to #1 initially (though I did think #2!), it's a shame iTunes didn't auto combine the two versions because the top 10 exposure would have presumably done her a certain degree of good.

I don't mind, it probably fits better in the iTunes thread than the weekly purchases thread I suppose.

Posted by: Davidson 16th September 2016, 05:53 PM

To be fair to Emeli she seems like the kind of artist a lot of people like but wouldn't hype up their latest release, or even know it was out yet.

She's not an internet hype kind of artist and has probably gone further away from being so by keeping such a low profile over the last few years. I'm sure that when casual music buyers, who don't follow internet blogs for new Friday releases hear that she is back she will pick up more sales steadily over time.

I'm surprised that a programme that's on at 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM can have that much of an impact for a song, the housewives and people on the dole must have showed their love for this song from James Arthur.

Posted by: SLlewellyn 16th September 2016, 06:39 PM

All for James Arthur returning to the charts - I supported him through his days on X-Factor and then, like most of the public, let him go once he seemed to want to just throw it all away. This new single is great though - would be nice to see it becoming a long-running hit like "Dancing on My Own".

Posted by: JosephStyles 16th September 2016, 06:41 PM

It's not like Emeli's got a massive fanbase or anything so I can see Hurts continuing to climb for a bit as awareness increases, as opposed to a fanbase act peaking quickly and falling.

You mean the version that got played on the radio wasn't six minutes long? It must have just felt that way.

You could easily edit it though, because the same 4 minutes are the same as the single version. It has a false end and then keeps going.

That's what I love about the charts though. It's similar to when 'Moves Like Jagger' took off. 4 years prior, a feature on a Rihanna song couldn't give Maroon 5 a hit while a year prior Christina flopped with her comeback. As much as I don't like JA's voice, the chart geek in me loves a shock hit.

I agree with this - she will no doubt be an AirPlay no1 in the coming month!

Yeah that's where I heard it!

James Arthur's success is simultaneously baffling (because how did he even have enough name power left to get off to such a good start?) and completely understandable (as it's the exact sort of song that would be a big hit). It's a fairly good song, I usually cannot stand his voice but it's not too bad on this.

I find it baffling too. You see huge artists struggle but an unheard of song from an artist who wasn't that popular in the first place, (who people disliked if anything) with no airplay jumps up like that...I really can't understand the logic.

Posted by: danG 17th September 2016, 09:09 AM

He had a deep house song last year 'Darlin' which got some radio one support but didn't make any chart impact. Not heard this new one yet - surprised it's doing this well.

Posted by: mdh 17th September 2016, 09:11 AM

Yeah, always puzzles me how established acts like Lost Frequencies and Avicii can massively flop with a single yet the likes of offaiah and Tom Zanetti can initially go top 30 with a single?

In other news James Arthur is the furthest ahead he's ever been, I'd love for him to push Closer down to 0.5

I'd say because it's something fresh and different. Radio 1 gave a lot of support to Offaiah months before it was released so I'm not surprised at its success. Tom Zanetti is popular on social media so this may just be an initial surge before it drops back again.
I wouldn't paint Lost Frequencies with the same brush as Avicii in terms of 'established' though... Are You With Me was always going to be popular but that's it from him whereas Avicii has had multiple Top 10s and is hardly struggling.

Remember James did have the best-selling winner's single of all time. He was a popular winner at the time, and most people either don't know or have forgotten about what happened afterwards. He still has 2 million Twitter followers. He had enough of a fanbase to get the single off the ground.

Posted by: mr_pmt 17th September 2016, 10:00 AM

I wish Tom Zanetti - Darlin' had made some chart impact, it's one of the best dance tracks of recent years. Maybe they can push it again at a later date? I don't think it received any real R1 support first time around except for INMWT list (or maybe not even that, perhaps just TOTD and not playlisting it like they tend to do).

Glad to see this doing well anyway!

Those numbers relate to the performance against the biggest selling single - she has actually gained on the Chainsmokers (up from selling 52% of “Closer” to 53%)

Before 0.4424 /0.8503 = 0.52

A lot of big female pop stars are having a difficult time at the moment, unfortunately. Make Me by Britney and Rise by Katy Perry should've both been smash hits, especially the former. I'd like to say that it's just streaming that's pulling them down, but it's not. No one is even buying their music on iTunes which is quite weird. it is actually quite shocking to see tbh. i'm sure we all didn't expect number ones everywhere especially after artpop but for it to be doing this badly is unbelievable. she definitely had a bit of hype from all the critically acclaimed vocal performances she's given recently so i would have thought that would have gotten the public back on board with her but it's really not translated at all.

It does seem coincidental that they're all flopping simultaneously but then on the other hand they've all done far better than Make Me, Rise and Perfect Illusion in the past imo. That said its clear to see (sadly) that Britney and Gaga's imperial phases are long behind them and even Katy's star has faded a lot recently, I question if she'll ever have another top three hit.

Pretty sure it's always been uncool to like Lady Gaga.

I think it's just because her song sounds so out of place in the current market. It's all about trap, EDM & tropical house nowadays and similar to how all the pop artists jumped on the dubstep bandwagon a few years ago they're all doing the same now. Gaga didn't & unfortunately it backfired which is a shame as I quite like the song.

You could say that it's down to their output, but we haven't had a female number one since 2015 which says a lot. With the exception of Rihanna and Adele, I think most of the worlds biggest female stars will struggle to get a top 10 single now which is sad.

James Arthur's success has seemed to stir interest in his back catalogue - Impossible is #117 and his album is back in the iTunes Top 150, big boosts for his music on Spotify too.

Impossible was played on The XFactor last night.

Posted by: JosephStyles 18th September 2016, 01:46 PM

I don't think Katy will struggle actually, I think the issue with Rise was simply the song, I like it but it's one of her weakest for sure, plus the Apple exclusive thing led to terrible Spotify streams when it eventually got added sad.gif I think if she puts out a huge pop song next, she'll have no trouble getting a big hit!

I must admit, this is how I expected Gaga to do really - it's a love/hate song seemingly, and her star has faded a lot the past few years, that was especially clear last era. It's doing *okay* for now and it's waaaaay too early to write it off but it's not doing excellently. The issue with Britney is radio, they see her as past it when she's making incredibly current and relevant music, it's a shame.

Pretty sure it's always been uncool to like Lady Gaga.

I wouldn't say so - for a time in late 2009 she was critically acclaimed, right around the time of “Bad Romance”.

She seems to have gone massively off the boil though, I really enjoyed some of the singles from the Fame Monster EP but since then it has been a rapid and pretty terminal decline in quality IMO.

She was definitely running the industry back in 2009 but I don't think she has ever been a "cool" artist, at least not for guys.

Hmm, well I think Katy would need to have a feature on the song if she wanted a hit but that's subjective, I guess.

But the thing with Britney is she has been in the business since 1999 and hasnt been popular in the last few years which is understandable as she is not regarded in the same league as Katy Perry, Rihanna, Pink, Ariana nowadays, and she doesnt really seem to care about success anymore or care anymore. Also radio refuse to play her as they think she is past it, if she released Toxic now it would flop. And that Katy Perry song was just a promotional song for NBC Olympics in the US, nota lead single with little promotion so it didnt really matter if it did bad like Pinks song for the film. If Rise was a lead single it would be a different story.

I'd never have told people at school that I liked Lady Gaga personally, so I have to agree with Dobbo. She's never exactly been "cool" in the same way as Drake, Rihanna or Justin Bieber, but she sold a lot of records..

Closer getting closer and closer to James Arthur again, I hope he clings on :/

Posted by: Jonjo 18th September 2016, 02:04 PM

Weren't the likes of NME and Kerrang praising Gaga, though (who's core audience are predominantly males)? Especially coz I'd guess she was a bit more "dark" and daring with her pop than majority of others. So I'd argue she was cool to like for guys. Right up to about 'Born This Way', which as anthemic as it was for her gay fans, it kinda isolated "the straights" and from then on... That's just how I see it personally. She catered specifically to her gay fans, pretty early on in her career and I think, it's kind of had a knock on effect as a whole.

(I hope this makes sense laugh.gif)

Posted by: danG 18th September 2016, 02:07 PM

well I loved the 'Born This Way' era and I'm not even gay laugh.gif I see where you're coming from though. She could have easily just made some widely accessible hits but she chose to cater to her core fanbase more than the general public.

She said in an interview recently that it was a joint agreement between her and her management to have PI as the lead single, what were they thinking? The lead single is meant to be the most GP friendly, accessible, commercial song on the album. This was a bad move, if this is the best they can offer. If the is the most commercial song on the album, they may scrap it. They shouldnt have released the release date so they could delay it w

I'd say yes here, as long as you specifically refer to post-Where Are U Now Bieber.

Posted by: JosephStyles 18th September 2016, 02:13 PM

Justin Bieber is incredibly cool right now I think! A lot of people I know have been loving him since Where Are U Now and are quite happy to talk about him.

Honestly I get the sense with this era that commercial success isn't the priority for Gaga, so if that's true, Perfect Illusion likely wasn't a bad choice.

Posted by: danG 18th September 2016, 02:14 PM

They're not going to scrap the album just because the lead didn't do well. Lady Gaga said it's a very personal album so I very much doubt she'd be okay with delaying or scrapping it in fear of having a commercial flop (and I'm sure money isn't an issue anyway, she's got loads of it)

Posted by: Cremey 18th September 2016, 02:16 PM

Who cares who's cool or not really :')
But yeah I feel like it's definitely much more widely accepted to like Bieber than it was a few years ago!

Posted by: T Boy 18th September 2016, 02:43 PM

The kids at school love Bieber at the moment. Even the older lads love his 'bangers'.

Lady Gaga didn't take off until I was in uni and was in decline by the time I started teaching so I'm unable to address whether or not she was ever cool.

Half of the show's listeners probably know no different and take the #1 on that show to be official, so it would be a pretty big profile boost for the song.

That said, why that show hasn't changed its format yet is beyond me. They might as well just change it completely to an airplay chart, iTunes has become so unrepresentative. Either that or take the live Spotify top ten instead of the iTunes top ten.

Posted by: Doctor Blind 18th September 2016, 03:45 PM

True, most people I speak to think the iTunes #1 is the official number 1.

I still enjoy it when two versions of the same single are in the Top 10 and they have to play it twice! Amazing.

Posted by: gooddelta 18th September 2016, 03:51 PM

Yes the rules have always seemed made up as they go along laugh.gif

It's a real shame that it's actually the official chart which seems to have become meaningless in the eyes of the public, even though it means the most. People might know what's #1 on Spotify or iTunes but probably not officially as hardly anybody listens to the official chart and it's barely referenced in the media anymore, apart from when a record is broken, like Ward Thomas becoming the first UK country #1 album.

We used to get blanket media coverage of every new #1, especially if it was a novelty song (would never happen anymore), or something that stands out from everything else musically (this never happens anymore either, if it ain't mildly tropical house-inspired pop or dance then it ain't coming in sad.gif)

Posted by: Jack 18th September 2016, 03:55 PM

I just think it's because people only seem to like songs by random dance acts / Justin Bieber or male ed sheeran types.

If you're female you're f***ed really. Ellie and Emeli should be doing much better and even Ariana has only just got a top 10 hit. It's a shame and I hope the music climate changes because music released this year has been great but we're still celebrating trash at the top of the charts.

It's even harder for new artists too, M.O and Dua Lipa would've done much better a couple of years or so ago too I think. sad.gif It actually is low key upsetting to see.

Posted by: AcerBen 18th September 2016, 04:07 PM

The Big Top 40 show is more interesting than the Radio 1 show now at least, plays records that don't get into the "play zone" on Radio 1! Makes me laugh though that they reveal the current top 10 at 5pm like it's going to change at all in 1 hour's time.

Posted by: John-James 18th September 2016, 04:22 PM

The Big Top 40 is a mess of a chart, it really makes me laugh. Songs that drop out the iTunes Top 10 while they're on air effectively drop off the chart

He was a guest on the Big Top 40 - any snippet of promo is really benefiting him and the song so I really think it's going to be one of those songs to stick around for an age once media get behind it properly.

When ever I hear the Big Top 40 show it's always weird to hear Marvin Humes say "you can change the songs that we play in the top 10 by downloading your favourite tune now from iTunes". I doubt there is a single person in the UK who buys songs on iTunes just to make sure it will be in the top 10 by 6 PM on Sunday. The top 10 of iTunes by 6 PM on a Sunday is just a matter of coincidence surely, especially now that new releases come out on Fridays and not Sundays like they used to.

I think the point is the fact James Arthur came out of absolutely nowhere. He could be born in America for all it matters but we'd still be surprised he's at #1 after nearly 3 years away from music.

I think the point is the fact James Arthur came out of absolutely nowhere. He could be born in America for all it matters but we'd still be surprised he's at #1 after nearly 3 years away from music.

I think it'd be less of a shock for a good song, whoever it's by, to be #1 on iTunes a couple years ago compared to now though

Well he has to close a 10k gap that the Chainsmokers had - and they're still a fair way in front on Streaming.

I think they're too far in front this week - although his streaming had increased significantly I don't think it will be enough (for this week)

Daft Punk aren't exactly trend-hoppers so we can hope they'll actually bring something vaguely original to the table, and it'll smash either way because of The Weeknd's streaming impakt.

Agreed totally to Jonjo above. I'm in my late twenties so I'm hardly gonna enjoy the charts as much as my partying college/uni days (2008-2012) but I look back at a year like 1995, which I'd adore if that was the stuff being released now, and wonder what's gone so wrong. I used to think music would evolve into new and exciting sounds - it hasn't, it's gone backwards and boring.

It all started so well this year too, I was thrilled when 'In Ibiza' became such a huge #1. Then Drake happened tongue.gif

Weeknd is a big, hyped artist, who's album went to #1 last year, he's also a huge streaming juggernaut. Daft Punk also went straight to #1 with Get Lucky a couple of years back, when they had a similarly relevant feature (though weeknd is arguably more relevant now than PW was when GL first premiered). I'm not sure if this'll go to #1 next week, but I hope it's in with a chance - it's not rising as fast as I expected.

Posted by: Bjork 22nd September 2016, 08:42 AM

I also think it won't block James Arthur, nice tune but hardly on the same level as Get Lucky

Posted by: ElectroBoy 22nd September 2016, 09:07 AM

Posted by: Mango 22nd September 2016, 10:46 AM

'Starboy' is quite good on first listen, it does sound like an eventual #1 but I'd quite like James Arthur to get there for one week.

Posted by: Bjork 22nd September 2016, 10:48 AM

not so far, would be much higher, it's not even out as single

I see it's on Spotify too already... but how they're gonna count their streams is also an issue cos Spotify does not report Thu data on time and Thu data is always an estimation based on the streams gained during the week... not sure how can they estimate a brand new Thu release smile.gif

They just won't acknowledge it at all. I seem to recall a Music Week report confronting this issue with a release that was also released on a Thursday earlier this year.

^ pretty sure there was an issue earlier this year with The Stone Roses

by the way, James Arthur is increasing his lead again, Chainsmokers almost down to 0.50 when James is combined

Why is it such a problem for Spotify to report Thursday's streaming data in time for Friday afternoon's chart? Surely in this technological day and age it can't be that difficult!

That's right, I found the article:

Stone Roses' first new single in 21 years, All For One was released at 8pm on Thursday (12th) and topped iTunes' singles chart within two hours. However, the song fails to show on the Top 200, with just seven sales recorded. That's because iTunes dominates paid-for digital sales and also has a significant presence in the streaming market, and failed to provide data to OCC in time for the chart. To make up for the shortfall, as often happens, data from earlier in the week was upweighted - but that's no use to All For One, which also suffered because there was no data from Spotify for Friday either.

Would LOVE Neiked to become a hit!! 'Sexual' is amazeeee wub.gif great to see it fairly high despite no airplay (to my knowledge!)

Posted by: Joe. 22nd September 2016, 11:46 AM

The Thursday rule hugely effected the Christmas songs last year, too. As Thursday was Christmas eve all the Christmas songs had their biggest streams (by far) that day, but it was unweighted instead included.

OMG loving this Starboy song. heart.gif And The Weeknd's demo isn't teens. laugh.gif When I was in my first year of uni 4 years ago, everyone was raving about him.

James Arthur would be a nice shock #1 for the history books but Starboy is 100% the best and more original song of the two imo.

Posted by: Bjork 22nd September 2016, 12:13 PM

not sure how original it is to repeat what Daft Punk and Pharrell did 3 years ago already, that was original, doing a Get Lucky part 2 now, that's not very groundbreaking at all imho... good song, all you want, but an rnb singer collaborating with Daft Punk... done before...

still shocking how well James Arthur is doing, so well it almost makes no sense, there are much better songs by much better singer-songwriters with much more promo and radio support and they do barely nothing, was just listening to Tom Odell's Magnetised now, and for me that's 1000 times better than the James Arthur song (and I do genuinely like it), got tons of airplay and still only got to #40 on the charts :/

They literally sound nothing alike? Get Lucky is a happy clappy (bordering on cheesy) song, and this is a dark and autumnal slow jam.

Weeknd has collaborated with loads of people, as have Daft Punk - same with half the chart. Why is this specifically "done before".

Posted by: Bjork 22nd September 2016, 12:41 PM

was just replying to someone saying the Weeknd deserved it more cos the song was more original than James Arthur
which I personally don't think it's the case
just cos a song is by a singer-songwriter and an acoustic guitar doesn't make it boring and unoriginal, but each to his/her own

And if they can't, wouldn't it make sense to delay the chart till Sunday to ensure it's actually correct?

Posted by: JosephStyles 22nd September 2016, 01:24 PM

Honestly 9 times out of 10, I doubt the data would make much difference to the final outcome of the chart. Sure, we've had instances where it notably has made a difference, but on your average week, you might get a few of the lower positions swapping or something but I wouldn't say it matters a great deal if a big hit from January is #177 instead of #176 heehee.gif Most of the time we get an accurate estimation I would say! (having said this, I would prefer correct data, but they can't delay the chart just because Spotify are crap at reporting data on time)

Posted by: Bjork 22nd September 2016, 01:40 PM

The Weeknd now at #14 (+55)
Human at #31
Lady gaga up to #34 (video effect)
Country Forever #39
Kooks #40 (is it in an ad??)
new Chase & Status #51

Posted by: mdh 22nd September 2016, 03:42 PM

I'd expect The Weeknd to have a massive impact this time tomorrow - it'll probably be advertised then, and as far as I'm aware there's nothing bigger out, so it'll be #1 on the Spotify new music playlist.

That segué's nicely onto my question of the week - what's out tomorrow that could do something in the iTunes top 40 tongue.gif

Agree with this! Chart worked better on Sunday and would ensure totally accurate streaming figures are reported. Unlikely they'd do it, but we can hope smile.gif

Tbh I think it's a bit lazy to call 'Starboy' a repeat of 'Get Lucky' simply because they're the two most recent Daft Punk hits (I know SB hasn't become a hit yet but it looks as though it will). As Joe said, they aren't even similar whereas 'Say You Won't Let Go' is lyrically and musically like 'Thinking Out Loud'. But that's just my view.
