Omg I watched this today and it is just fab. Especialy the bus over the bridge bit lol
LOVE
Its seriously so awful, and the acting is sooo dreadful. It actually makes it a great film
They bus bit though is the best with there cardboard london bridge and a toy Spice bus
yes thats a good part and the part where posh is in the water worried about designer labels
I like that movie..I used to own it, but I don't know what happened to it..I should rebuy it.
lmao. i got it on DVD not so long ago. its mint!
i still have the geri tin i got with it
its an amazing film. the bus over the bridge looks sooo dodgey now but when i was wee it looked soo more real
I must get that DVD. I've seen it ages ago. I loved it!
I haven't seen it in years, but I do have the video in one of those special limited edition tins that they had when it first came out . Mine is the Mel C tin !! Just like this:
I got a Victoria tin with my mine
I need to find that video I might sit down and watch it tonight.
i got the geri tin with mine
i wanna buy it on dvd soon, i dont know where my video went
I got the emma tin with mine, i have lost it though.
i need 2 find my geri tin b4 i move. im sure i saw it the other day
i bare got the Geri Tin
i wish i got a tin with mine.
I won all 5 tins but only one cam ewith the actaul video :lo: i love the bit at the begining where they place the extended version of Too Much. Whe i wasyounger i used to pretend I was all of them and do the little dance moves they each did
And the saddest part of it is that I know every single line from the movie.
"There They Are"
"What"
"My Boots Geri, Your Wearing My Boots"
"Oh Yeah, I Didn't Know How That Happened"
have all of ye bought the movie??
my gosh i havent seen it in agessss!
i must hunt down a copy! coz i lost mine when i moved house ages ago
Im sure u will get it cheap now
mmm hmmmm! some places here have it cheap (and there's a few sales on atm!)
but i saw it in a shop the other week for $34.95! i was like what the lol!?!
coz it is kinda old..... ha ha!
I've got the Emma tin somewhere.
I used to now next lines as well. Ages ago since I watched the movie last.
i havnt seen the movue in years
I think we need a place to discuss the epicness that is SpiceWorld the movie, how they didnt all gets Oscars for this still shocks me to the core every single day!
Okay, so it wasn't that amazing, but it is still pretty good right???
i absolutely love it. there's no getting past the fact that it's some of the worst acting ever seen but that's what makes more endearing i suppose. plus the best soundtrack for a film EVER!
Not surprisingly I haven't seen the film but I did enjoy seeing it get panned by the critics and then being an utter flop.
OMG, I've just posted in a Spice Girls forum
Aww I love this film, its such a classic! haha
I just love Victoria in it!
I have this on tape which came in a individual Spice Girl tin. I got Geri.
I don't have a tape player so haven't watched it in years.
I actually think Spiceworld is an underrated Pop movie and should actually be ranked alongside treasured classics like A Hard Day's Night and Help as it captures a global phenomenom at the heights of it's powers. It's well scripted, funny and the acting is pretty good all things considered.
Sorry I can't keep it going any longer. Awful film.
Guilty pleasure if there ever was one. Love the film Was shocked to watch it the other day and discover TOSH from Torchwood playing the best friend. Crazy times.
I loved this when i was about 11 i had all the merch for my birthday, even had the birthday cake fun times
I've never seen it, but Im not surprised to see it was a terrible film that was panned by critics!
received 27% from Rotten Tomatoes
I do rather love this film. I actually watched it the other week! !
Victoria completely MAKES the film. Amazing <3 I also have the video tin thing, I have Victoria on mine
Can you get it on 3D BD?
This is showing on Sky Family at 5am.
I've still not watched the whole thing but from what i have seen of it, its not a patch on Seeing Double (S Club Movie)
i watched a few parts of this on youtube the other day to refresh my memory and it's one of those films where i can't even concentrate on the plot (what plot suedehead may say! ) because i'm too busy just being reminiscent and thinking of what i would have been doing at the time and what it was like in 1997.. i do this for a lot of old films but this one especially because it was like such a cultural phenomenon. but at the time you don't really realise how big it is.. i mean if i knew how big they were then as i do now i would have got all the albums, all the singles, gone to see them on tour etc to like really take it in. not sure if that makes any sense but yeah just though i'd post here cos we're only 1 post behind another team in this forum resurrection thing so now were even! will go see what else i can post about
must say though i never thought i'd spend most of my time and posting on here in the spice girls forum!
Victoria is the highlight -
I think I basically agree with everything Jake has said about this movie. It's obviously features awful acting, is all over the place with the direction and was nothing more than a rush job in promotion of their second album but I love it so much. I remember watching it lots when I was younger, Victoria is really funny in it, I have so many memories with it.
I watched it again recently and didn't realise how many familiar faces were in it, you don't really notice when you're that young. They were just so huge, I think GaGa is the only person who could pull off something like this since. S Club 7 tried the whole film thing, but it wasn't the same.
Spiceworld is great! I mean it's bad but it's highly entertaining, funny, full of nostalgia and it was made at exactly the right time when they were on top of the world. It really does capture the (admittedly short-lived) phenomenon rather well and it's hard to imagine a pop group doing it today, let alone a girl group. The critics took it waaay too seriously.
So my best friend watched this for the first time today and messaged her reactions to me throughout. What an iconic movie it is and so many *.* moments!
(...)
and my personal favourite,
I guess it's safe to say Posh Spice makes this movie.
"This dress is dry clean only, Melanie" never fails to make me laugh. I agree, Victoria was by far the best in the movie.
I haven't actually watched it in years, it's about time I did again. It's currently on UK Netflix, in HD. I'd love it if it was released on Blu-Ray to coincide with their 20th anniversary!
UV and Jack to move this to the movie forum.
chasing the sats >>
I got it the other day from Cex for £2. Still wish they'd release it on blu ray though
perfect script, cinematography, soundtrack.. p e r f e c t
In a bit of a Spice mood with re-watching their epic BRITs performance *.* This movie is gold lmao, used to watch it all the time <3 So funny and yessss amazing accompanying soundtrack
Maybe a idea to watch it with a lot of people on Rabb.it this weekend now it's on the UK Netflix?
Yes we need to do the session we've been planning for about 10 months now! (Though not this weekend as this weekend is chock-a-block!)
Are we still not talking about how the Spicebus is bigger on the inside?
TWIST: The Spicebus is actually a TARDIS....
Omg. I genuinely don't think that's EVER crossed my mind 😂😂😂😂😂😂
An all-time classic film, I'm sure we'll all agree.
They're re-releasing it later this month for the 20th anniversary! I looked at getting tickets for my local Vue but it's already sold out! Ha impakt!
I wanted to go to the showing of this in my local Vue on the 29th but I'm in Lincolnshire until the 30th for work experience! This film is such a guilty pleasure.
"I'M VICTORIA MALCOLM"
Epic classic. Will never end. Unlike something-something (I'll figure this out later).
also, a bit gutted that I don't think we ever got round to doing a viewing of this on Rabb.it
I really want to go to the Birmingham showing, not sure if I'll be able to though!
Our Screen is teaming up with War Child for the screening for Spiceworld The Movie and after that they will have Q&A with Melanie C on Sept 30th in London!
Just seen that my local Vue in Northampton still needs another 42 people attending to make it happen... so I shall not be too distraught about missing it when it probably won't happen here anyway.
Might have to dig it out on DVD at some point nevertheless because I haven't watched it in years!
Also, random anecdote related to this movie - I was watching an episode of Pointless recently and got a Pointless answer by saying 'Spiceworld' for "Movies that Roger Moore has starred in" - goals *.* x
Omg i still need to see this, I'd be up for Rabbiting it like we've said for bloody ages
My cinema only needs 5 more tickets to go ahead!!! *.*
This will be £2.99 in HMV from tomorrow 😁
I can't wait to see it on the 29th September. Is anyone else going?
Melanie C will be doing a Q&A at a SpiceWorld screeing in London on September 30th.
I'm waiting on more people for the Darlington showing.. not gonna happen 😭
The nearest one to me is Colchester...alas I am otherwise engaged that day. But would be there otherwise as I loved the film and still regularly dig it out for a DVD rerun on Sundays
I've seen it in fopp for £3 too! With the original 'movie poster' cover.
Wait... You're from the midlands sammy??
My best mate is the GM at Savoy in Nottingham. I'd be going if Machine Gun Kelly wasn't playing Rock City that night.
Over 8000 tickets have been sold for this *.*
I'm going Can't wait.
Got my tickets confirmed ✌🏼
Tomorrow Looking forward to it!
Going to watch on my own tv tonight.
Went to see this with Bal on Friday, so fun! *.* Actually a childhood dream come true, to see Spiceworld at the cinema! (my parents wouldn't take me 20 years ago and made me went for the VHS, how mean ;o).
Was such a good experience. I watched the film multiple times as a child on VHS and pretty much forgot it existed until recently again. A good atmosphere and a real nostalgic evening.
How was Spice Girls vs Girls Aloud??
^ A fun night out! But not as much Spice/Aloud songs played as I was hoping for. They were mixed in between lots of other artist songs.
I heard these: Wannabe, Say You'll Be There, Who Do You Think You Are, Spice Up Your Life, Stop // Mi Chico Latino, I Turn To You // Sound of the Underground, No Good Advice, Love Machine, Biology, Something New // Call My Name, Go to Work(!)
Nowhere near as much GA as I'd have liked. Not hearing Sexy!, The Show & Something Kinda Ooooh was a bit gutting!
Spiceworld showings are happening again on 9th December with some proceeds going to Children In Need! Hopefully I can go this time *.*
They should have turned the movie into the musical tbh!
...I've still never seen it
Spiceworld: The Movie was released in UK cinemas 20 years ago today on Boxing Day, 1997! It topped the UK Box Office Chart, grossing £6.8 million during its opening weekend!
Once again my theater is doing two showings of Spice World in January and it’s already half sold. I’ve seen it the past three years consecutively at the movie theater. They do specialized cocktails to each girl as well as some prizes.
The movie is getting a DVD re-release in Australia in February, with new artwork:
I really wish the movie would receive a blu-ray release, it's long overdue.
Why just Australia? That cover looks awesome though.
Not sure actually, quite random!
The most recent episode of Gogglebox included Spiceworld The Movie! As you might expect, the reactions towards their acting was negative :') but some nice comments about them as a music/performing act.
Love this film to bits! It’s silly, very British and very self-aware and it’s not like they went out of their way to hide the fact that the girls aren’t actresses or anything. Don’t understand what people find to be so negative about it as it’s pretty clear (in my book at least) that it doesn’t try to be anything more than what it actually is.
I saw it again recently. There's something really unusual about it in retrospect. The girls were the biggest group on the planet at the time Spice World was shot. You'd think it'd be a pretty strictly mainstream effort. Instead, the filmmakers cast a ton of cult actors...and loaded it with bonkers scenes like they intended all along for the thing to be a favorite drag queen midnight movie staple in 20 years. Not that there's anything wrong with any of that.
I actually rather like how weird the movie is. It's endlessly quotable. I just have one major criticism.
They should have recorded the Spice World album before they shot the movie...not during production. To me, the best moments come when the girls are performing...and certainly nothing else in the film comes close to the ending performance of Spice Up Your Life. But there should be more. They had such a command of a stage at that time. The Istanbul concert is a very good showcase of that. Spice World only shows that fact in spurts. Had the album been complete at that time, other songs could've been better incorporated (a performance of Stop, in particular, definitely belongs in there)
Aaaaand I've just typed a lot more than I intended on a weird movie about five popstars that features aliens and a live childbirth scene.
It is ICONIC!!
It's one of the things that makes Spice Girls more iconic than the likes of Backstreet Boys, Destiny's Child and One Direction etc. They had a flipping movie and a play station game for crying out loud!
Released in cinemas 24 years ago today!
I saw this with my family on Boxing Day, 1997. The local cinema was packed. Can’t believe it’ll be 25 years next year
Meat Loaf has passed away I tend to associate him with Spiceworld The Movie, as that was the first time I became aware of him. RIP
He had some great songs! Thats the 2nd? actor passing away from Spiceworld if i am right after Roger Moore.
I guess my first familiarity with Meat Loaf was hearing I'd Do Anything For Love. Loved both the song and video as a kid. Next...I would have caught him in Spice World. I started watching Rocky Horror Picture Show not long after that (I'm a bonafide fan of the film today). Actually, an actor who played Meat Loaf in a VH1 TV movie used to come speak to my high school every year. He shared the story of hating having to say the line..."So, you mean to tell me after 20 years...I have the #1 record?!" Meat Loaf also has a pretty memorable part in Fight Club.
He really was a very varied guy...and I'd credit him with being someone who redefined what a rock star could look like. I like that his music was kinda halfway between rock and Broadway musical.
His role in Spice World is a fairly random thing, I think. There's part of me that thinks the musicians in it should have all played themselves...instead of getting Elton John as Elton John...and Elvis Costello and Meat Loaf as whatever rando roles they could shove them in. But. Nonetheless, I see Meat Loaf's presence as further proof the filmmakers of Spice World knew it would be a movie for kids in 1997...and a midnight cult film in the decades to come.
Actors who’ve passed away who appeared in Spiceworld
Richard Briers
Sir Roger Moore
Meat Loaf
i honestly adore this movie
When the 25th anniversary of this rolls around what do you want? A limited cinema rerelease, blu-ray/dvd 25th anniversary release, added to streaming services?
For me physical media is dead so I'd do a limited cinema run on its release date 26th Dec for a few weeks then add to streaming services on the anniversary of the video release. I'd upload the Mama performance to Youtube too.
I’d like a blu ray of it. I seen it in the cinema a few years ago so not that bothered about it being screened again in tbh
Tbf I think it was deliberate to not renew any liecences the last couple of years so a 25th anniversary release would be more impactful. They stopped making the budget dvd that was like £5.99 on Amazon for years and never renewed it on Netflix. At least now it will be a bit of a bigger thing as unless you have an old copy of the dvd it is hard to watch.
I really want a DVD/Blu-ray re-release, but also make it available on streaming too.
We know that their plans for celebrating the Spiceworld anniversary will involve the movie, so I thought it'd be a good idea to bump this thread so we can keep discussion about that in this thread instead.
Do you have any hopes or expectations for what they should do to celebrate Spice World?
I said it above but re-releasing it on DVD and Blu-Ray would be ideal. Even on 4K if they're able to release it in that quality. New artwork. Maybe they could have some steelbooks. Imagine if they did the "individual girl artwork" gimmick, as a throwback to the VHS tins?
I hope that they could share some cut scenes, any more footage they have from Royal Albert Hall.
Having it back in the cinemas for a time would be great. It also needs to be put on streaming again.
Since they skipped the individual vinyls this time, I’ll them to do five individual covers for Blu-ray Discs then.
I can't believe we still have not heard anything about the plans for the 25th anniversary! At this point, I doubt there are any plans to start with, but it could have been so easy for them; a short theatre run, new DVD and potentially sell it to a streaming service.
SW25 has only just been released. You don't need 6 weeks in advance announcement to put it on streaming and a DVD wont need huge long pre-orders, especially if they go with the DVD release on the 25th anniversary of the VHS.
25 years later and it's not widely available to stream, and never released on Blu-ray...
Only the Spice Girls ey?
But I love that Richard E Grant has remained so loyal to them!
I really must watch this again somewhen next year. Not seen it since it came out
A re-release would've been nice for the anniversary. It's incredibly hard to find on DVD, even more reason for it to go on a streaming service
I had it on VHS as a kid and vaguely remember having it in some kind of collector's tin. Wish I still had it
Honestly I'm done with them (Universal more). Universal got the rights to the movie from Paramount ages ago, before all the 25th anniversary stuff was happening. They have had so much time to sort a physical release and a streaming service deal. Both of which Paramount had, it used to be in print on a budget dvd and have a deal to be on Netflix.
It seems all Universal want is to be able to use clips of it on social media. We were actually much better off with it with Paramount. At this point it feels like self sabotage everything Universal do.
Universal really fumbles de bag with them, at every stage... jesus wept...
Throwing it up on a streaming service would be great but also, so many people used to watch the film on Christmas day, they could totally get a deal to show it on TV channels and then for it to go on streaming in 2023...
Whatever, I guess... They don't seem bothered at all
I think the "problem" is that the movie is seen as a novelty item and not really a classic in its own right + the girls are not so keen on reminiscing it themselves. I would lie if I said it's a GOOD movie But it is interesting time-capsule and nostalgia.
I was lucky to see the movie at a special screening in my home town but it took a Spice Girl fan and lots of help from Universal to arrange it as there are not many copies available.
The movie has a pop-cult status to it which they could easily capitalise on. Clearly, something went wrong as even Mel C mentioned they were in discussions with the studio early this year to release it...
SO maybe this time it is on Universal, not them?...
Still never seen it
Thats such a shame, specially as there is so much potential. The downturn in quality from Spice25 to Spiceworld25 was so apparently clear, wow... I wonder if Spice25 just didn't sell what they wanted it to sell so they went with the cheapest and lowest quality possible... It was still a very successful campaign from what we understand, right?....
Certainly the backlash between the product, and its quality, and their lack of support for it was very stark this time.
The girls themselves barely promoted Spice25 to be honest with you, each of them mainly just shared the instagram post, but Melanie C did do some interviews in support of it as she was promoting her own work at the time anyway. It is quite telling that they keep expecting the group to sell bucketloads without the involvement of the GROUP to promote it. We should know by now that without the group's support, things will flop.
It's been that way since 1999/2000, and it absolutely sucks they and their teams at Universal don't seem to grasp that.
Random thoughts... but I wonder why the poster/VHS design for the film in some territories (including the UK) put really heavy emphasis on 'THE MOVIE' (with "SPICEWORLD" in a much smaller font size) whereas in other countries such as the US there was more focus on "SPICE WORLD"? I wonder why there wasn't consistency in the way the design was presented worldwide?
Other examples: https://www.ecranlarge.com/uploads/image/001/129/67hf6pqkb29mtwpaw7fghjll60r-589.jpg and https://i.ebayimg.com/thumbs/images/g/AbYAAOSwQYZW1YNX/s-l225.jpg
VS.
Another thing... clearly the design of the first posters suggests that it is spelled "Spiceworld" as one word, just like the album is... but over time it seems to have become widely accepted that the movie is called "Spice World" with a space... which I'm guessing is influenced by the second posters having 'SPICE' and 'WORLD' separated by having the words above and below each other.
Oh and there's also different slogans as can be seen above. "They don't just sing!" / "Five girls. Five days. One rocking world!" / "You say you want a revolution?" - which slogan do you all think is the best and most effective?
Also! The picture of them together is mirrored, and I wonder why the designers felt that was the right choice for it? Emma's necklace is amended so it shows 'Baby' despite being mirrored, but they forgot that Melanie's arm tattoo would appear on the wrong arm when mirrored.
^ I really love the US poster for the film with the sequin union jack background. Was this one used for a lot of other territories too? I remember spotting it in theaters back at the time. It was so bold and eye-catching. Such an iconic design. I remember being a bit disappointed when that design wasn't carried over into the VHS release...and they went for the considerably more muted globe background. As for taglines...I don't love "You Say You Want A Revolution". I get that the film owes more than a little DNA to the Beatles' films...but still...I don't think that tagline sums up the film well. I like "They Don't Just Sing" and "Five Girls. Five Days. One Rockin' World" far better.
In terms of other marketing, I remember thinking the full length trailer was super odd. It sets itself up to be a Charlie's Angels-type mission film...that somehow lands the girls in all these bizarre scenarios. From the trailer, I was expecting something along the lines of Michael Jackson's Moonwalker film. Moonwalker is more a string of musical scenes starring MJ. There's not a singular storyline that connects the whole thing. So. I was actually really surprised to catch Spice World and find...there was a far more streamlined plot than what had been advertised (and the spy mission plot just...wasn't a thing at all...?...)
i Always prefered the green one.
That's a good observation regarding the posters and the trailer.
I always preferred the green SW Movie Poster but the Union Jack shoot was iconic and was probably a better way to sell it internationally because of the whole 'cool Britannia' thing and of course Geri's union jack dress.
As for taglines, I always liked 'they don't just sing' as in there will be acting in the movie but the 5 girls, 5 days, one rocking world isn't bad.
If anyone wants to see the many international posters I posted them on stories last year and now I have added them to my highlights tab on Instagram.
The green one is the best imo, and it was everywhere when I was growing up in Portugal.
Glad I only came across the UK-flag one later in life. It's a great picture but that background is literally national propaganda lol I know the whole 'cool britannia' was riffe at the time and they were the queens of it, but it is really cringe and wouldnt work in a lot of places lol
It seems like Spice World The Movie is finally going to be re-released on DVD next month:
https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/dvd-spice-world-the-spice-girls-movie/39257109?ean=9317486006138&fbclid=IwAR1OJGl3VAMwc1nQgYFBxVkWnBQPvSHpfMjkaVg74pWQrqXqAkpk0foNJdk
No info yet on what it will look like or what content will be available. Shame it doesnt seem to be going on streaming either...
WAIT Amazon seem to have the cover art, but still no sign of content. I LOVE the cover art though:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BQWTQCR9?ref_=cm_sw_r_mwn_dp_761QRA6BP6CR28955E6F&fbclid=IwAR2MHMgnaP-RBdQu8bgtNa0mW1s8hJd-6bLAqmfRqHiCSX9fYe_q2Zpdiak
I hope it is not just a placeholder for a worse cover, cos I love this one!
A new DVD of Spice World? They can't even bother to release a quality version of the movie on blu-ray or 4K. Ridiculous!
Yeah why DVD in todsys HD and ultra HD era.
Cant remember the last time I bought a DVD. Should be a Blu ray release.
Retro Kweens
It isn't being done by Universal or the Girls team. I think the rights are held by someone else in Australia and they are rereleasing it there, just it will be an import elsewhere too.
Iirc Australia had a 20th anniversary rerelease too by the same people. Obviously shows what could be if Universal actually cared.
To weigh in on earlier discussion, I like the promo posters and covers with the green lettering.
This needs to be on Netflix. Full stop.
No effs given about DVDs or other related-merchandise.
And please, an Oscar to Victoria for best Comedy.
Spice world on Netflix would probably could help selling the SW25 too. Why are they doing this to our girls??? Can they get out of the contract with them?
It’s definitely irritating that they’re getting some good 25th anniversary coverage and it’s not as easy as it should be to access the movie.
The union jack background poster is far better! The green lettering sucks, but they should have focused on the name, SPICEWORLD, rsther than just, THE MOVIE, in the UK promo.
Did you know that the working title of the film was Five?
I'm not sure if I did!
It made me recall that at the Cannes Film Festival it was introduced as being called Spice The Movie (and I've just seen that the logo used for it there was more focused on 'SPICE' than 'THE MOVIE'). [I think the more I look at the designs with 'THE MOVIE' in such large font, the less I like it... lol]
So much praise!
Great article! They totally get it
