15. A Hard Day's Night (1964) / A Hard Day's Night

Kicking off the top 15 is 'A Hard Day's Night'! It was released in the United States on 26th June 1964 and we got it two weeks later in the United Kingdom. It was backed by B-side 'Things We Said Today', which also made the cut for the 'A Hard Day's Night' album. The phrase originated from Ringo saying it in the midst of the group being overworked. These words had so much impact that The Beatles have a song, album and film named after it! The song itself is more romantic than the original meaning of the phrase. The male lover is overworked, so that stays true to it, but he feels as if his hard work is worth it so he can buy his lover the things she wants. The lyrics were predominantly written by Lennon but had some input from McCartney too. This was the case for the vocals too, as John takes the lead but Paul helps out elsewhere, mainly because John felt he would struggle with the higher notes. The song also features instrumental standouts. Firstly, like other songs on the album, the use of cow-bell noises is pretty quirky. But the most impactful part of all was simply the opening chord! The immediately recognisable intro was enough to influence The Byrds, who would adopt the Rickenbacker (the instrument George used to play this) as their signature instrument. Another memorable part to feature the guitar is during an instrumental break. So it's a pretty simple love song, full of cliché lines, but containing instrumental quirks that are considered influential. The single was a smash - becoming a #1 single on both sides of the pond. What a year 1964 was for The Beatles. The 'A Hard Day's Night' album now has no representation in the poll, following back-to-back eliminations of 'Can't Buy Me Love' and the title track.

I really like 'A Hard Day's Night' - despite the phrase originating in exhaustive circumstances, I find that the song gets me hyped up. Paul's pre-chorus and the instrumental break are particularly electric! I also really enjoy the film of the same name, definitely the best movie that they ever made I think.

'We Can Work It Out' again of course!

All You Need is Love ... yet again. I'd love to know who the other voter who is of a same mind is!

For the record ... We Can Work it Out is probably one of the best songs left in there!

I think we've got most of the irritating earlier stuff out actually, I Want to Hold Your Hand is the one I actually hold up to the same standard as their later material.

I Feel Fine to go now, looks like this is happening!

We Can Work It Out AGAIN. We don't seem to be able to get it out though do we?

Looking like I Feel Fine going this round.
