The title alone makes me feel like this is going to be such a departure for her musically and thematically. Has she ever had such a normal/natural (not sure they are the right words, but this sounds really whimsical and pure if that makes sense? I think we may be able to rule out an Applause 2.0 (i love it but that is probably a good thing!). I would LOVE it to be a ray of light moment, I just feel like it's going to be really powerful! Screamed when I saw this today, had 5 notifications from her Instagram posts, so had a legitimate panic attack for about 10 seconds and then when I found out It cheered me up so much ...although I hope that isn't the cover, visually she's capable of creating something much more interesting and less Microsoft Powerpoint.

Music, especially pop music needs this woman back. So happy and hyped and hope we get a VMA performance and that the song and video is of amazing quality. If you can survive being a Gaga fan when she's not releasing music, you're a real survivor.

This was *apparently* going to be an Apple Music exclusive but the deal has fallen through because of Frank Ocean's release and deals with UMG and Apple.




I don't know much about the full ins and outs but I for one am GLAD it's not getting any exclusive deals. They probably would've given it a huge push but i'd rather it be accessible to ALL.

In terms of success and what this could've meant I have no idea... Less of a backing from Apple? More opportunities to promote the single in other avenues? Spotify accessibility from day 1? WHO KNOWS.

In an ideal world the Apple Music deal would start midnight and be exclusive on there for 48 hours and then it's released on iTunes, youtube, Spotify and everywhere on Friday. I'm not sure it *completely* eliminates the possibility of an exclusive deal still because with Apple Music it will still be available for radios to play. But the fact it's coming on FRIDAY makes me think she wouldn't be foolish enough to restrict it to just Apple Music on the first day of the new sales week. Unless she really is going to start the new era badly AGAIN ()

This is going to sound like such a STAN comment but more than anything else so far, I am so so thrilled to see that Gaga seems happy in the snapchats and she seems genuinely excited to let the world hear this without any of the theatrics that have come before in previous eras - it seems really genuine. The last era was such a mess and she was really struggling personally and wasn't happy so the fact she seems to be for the start of this is the major plus.

Now let's just hope the music delivers ~~

I'm SO optimistic for this week, Gaga and her team have done a really decent job of hyping the track what with the Breakfast Show Co-Hosting meaning there're going to be near on 6 million people hearing Perfect Illusion all morning - and who knows how many streams and sales that'll produce. Add that to the token curiosity and fanbase streams and buys - we're looking at a huge debut next week!

I'm HOPING to GOD that she can debut top 50 on streams - because with her name she can easily reach top 10 within a week or so IF she debuts top 50.

I just really hope (even though he's one of my faves) Calvin's track isn't THAT big because I'd hate for Gaga to be overshadowed (honestly that'd be typical and probably end up happening). I'd love for Gaga to debut higher than Calvin.

Fair enough to get excited about the key change if it was actually good but it actually makes the song even worse. Her vocals on the key change part sound so weak too, they not only sound cheesy but also just sound a bit empty. The key change doesn't make the song sound bigger at all.

If this is honestly the best song on the album she has lost that spark she had for sure. I hope this is just a poor lead single choice.

Having calmed down from my stan state a bit, this is no way a hit. I just can't see it catching on, but she's choosing artistry over chasing a hit. This is what she wants to do, and you tell it's coming from her heart.

I love it though, I adore how raw it feels and the power behind it. I can definitely see it being marmite though, for sure.

Sorry, I'm not buying the whole artistry over charts thing. There is no real artistry in releasing a less than average song.

It's hardly as if this is experimental or indie either; it is clearly a out and out pop track, the instrumental, the key change and the pop hook. This is trying to be a pop song and therefore a chart hit but it is missing the mark tenfold.

I think it does give me an 80s vibe, which is what she went for. However I think "The Edge Of Glory" was a much more successful attempt at recreating that era and giving it a modern touch

Pop songs don't per se fail on their own terms just because they aren't a chart hit. This unambiguously throws back to 80s pop-rock - a sound that isn't exactly in right now. It seems a little r*ductive to judge it as a track on the basis of how well it performs in a chart scene which couldn't be further from this sound.

I love everything about it! Her voice is seriously stunning, the production is so f***ing retro 90's it's BEAUTIFUL!. Most I've stanned for a song by her since 'Bad Romance'. Outside of 'Glory', this is the best song I've heard this entire year. It's UNEQUIVOCALLY Gaga, but a change of pace. I AM IN FULL STAN MODE.

The only song I've listened to on repeat since 'Glory' dropped.

This is SOMETHING ELSE. I can't even begin to describe it but I'll try.

The production is sublime; like a BTW track for sure but more metallic and open than that album. The vocals yes I can see how they might grate on some but for me I find them so intriguing and raw. Is she happy is she distraught is she crying out for pain? I can't even pin point what this song means. It's not LOVE but it's a PERFECT illusion so is she ok with it not being so? SO MANY QUESTIONS is it about Taylor?

I'd say she's more passionate than angry. Like the reverse side of TEOG where she was more mournful and sorrowful.. now she's full of EMOTION and letting it all out.

All in all I absolutely adore it. Is it a hit? Probably NOT but I can't stop singing the hook and I've only heard it once Lol. So good to have her back <3

The thing that I love about Gaga's artistry is that she always tries to push the boundaries of pop music and actually proves that it's not one restricted genre but many genres that coexist in the same mainframe. She did that in BTW, she sorta touched on that with ARTPOP, and this single is the next step. It's like a BTW track but it seems more organic and raw which is what we've been seeing of Gaga for the past year or so. Sure it's underhwelming compared to her lead singles but is anything gonna touch the first three lead singles? Probably not. Even if it might not be a hit, you can tell she puts her heart and soul into it, especially in how raw her vocals sounded. I don't know, if we get more stuff that blends genres and pushes the boundaries, we might have a cohesive album for LG5.

amazing amazing bassline and so so catchy... my only criticism is the chorus feels like a pre-chorus for a chorus that never happens and u find urself at a middle 8 after 90 seconds which is odd

I am enjoying this and it has a catchy enough hook but it's not really one of her best :/ It feels over very quickly without ever getting to a really exciting place, the key change is probably the best bit but it doesn't hit the high points of stuff like Bad Romance/The Edge of Glory.. Even Applause was a catchier tune which I far prefer to this so far.

Not what I was expecting but I think I could actually grow to really like this! So catchy with the repeated "IT WASN'T LAAAARVE" and I think the video, if the single cover and the Blonde Ambition () picture are video stills, will really bring out the best of the song. Plus I think it will sound huge in the club with everyone trying to match those vocals!

I LOVE IT.

My first listen was very "oh gosh, what's this...!!" but with each listen everything is falling into place wonderfully. The 80s vibe, the extreme passion in her vocals, how "huge" the record sounds (vocals/production) and how it builds... it's just glorious. It's pretty much the antithesis of what's in the charts right now, but all the better for it!

I really sense sincerity and genuine passion from Gaga with this song (also taking into account how she spoke about it / reacted to it during her Radio 1 interview... dancing around in a carefree manner to it ). It just feels to me like this isn't a "calculated" record at all, like Born This Way or Applause probably were. This is like she's a lot more at ease in her artistry... it makes for a refreshing listen.

I fully expect a lot of fans / music lovers not to have expected this sort of sound at all - I certainly didn't. I really hope with further listens that it's going to worm its way into their affections, once the initial "shock" has subsided.

Overall, it's really making me sooo much more excited for the prospect of LG5. And imagining this performed on tour... help.

I'm not really feeling this. Like some others have said, it's too rushed and repetitive for me. It obviously sticks in your head but that's because by the end of the song, you feel as if the whole thing has just been 'It wasn't love, it was a perfect illusion'. For me, it just needs to have calmed down a bit and had a bigger chorus. Shame because I was really looking forward to it, especially considering Mark Ronson's influence - it should have been one of my favourites! Give me 'Applause' anyday though oops

I really enjoyed the first 30 seconds or so but then I agree with you Jack. She almost sounds out of tune throughout half of it and the only saving grace is the key change which is always a good thing. Nowhere near as instant as her other leads for me, potentially because it is just not as good. I applaud her for goong for something that sounds completely different to what's out there at the moment.

I am wanting to like this because there's been such a lead up and I've really wanted to see Gaga back with the elite popstars. But I'm having a difficult time with it. I do really like the production, but the melody just isn't good for me.

I know she's going for those raw Sia type vocals but the key change has her actually sounding a bit too pitchy and I'm like 'find the note, Gaga'. I really want this to be a hit regardless, but I somehow can't see the public taking to this. I think I've preferred all of Gaga's second singles apart from with Bad Romance so I'm hoping there's something special up her sleeve.

So basically, I agree with Ryan and Jack that her sounding out of tune kills it a bit.

There is something really grating about the chorus. The verses are okay, if a bit forgettable, but they aren't bad per se. It's the chorus which is really lacking and I think it might be her vocals which I actually really dislike on it. They go from bland to shouty.

I'm so willing to like this but so far it's my least favourite single from her ever, lead or not lead.

Not her best and not her worst, but i welcome its quick rise to the top of the itunes chart. I would like to see stable sales at itunes number 1 for the week and streaming increases and she could achieve a very high debut.

I think I'd enjoy this more if it wasn't for those vocals...they sound very hoarse and I don't know if it's intentional or not I mean it's simple, and god knows I much prefer that version Lady Gaga to the overly complex, pretentious Lady Gaga, but I was left with a feeling of 'is that it?' when it finished.

Heard it 3 times now and after the first listen, I was thinking it'd be just initial disappointment only to then be disappointed both times after. Hopefully a grower but not really getting the mass hysteria around it right now. I like it more than I've ever liked BTW so I guess that's a start. Hopefully just needs some getting used to!

I like it, but it's my least favourite lead single of hers. Certainly not the big comeback smash I was hoping for and her vocals are grating at times.

It's funny you mention When Doves Cry, I was thinking earlier there are definite Prince influences in this. The glamorous-pop-rock sound but done TODAY.

It seems to me that stans and casual fans are reacting more negatively towards this then the general public.

I feel like Britney stans are vibing to this more than the Gaga fans. But, Gaga fans on ATRL and her main forum are over dramatic queens that would prefer a a generic dance number to anything remotely fresh and innovative.

A lot of the 'mega fans' just want her to smash and be the #1 girl again which isn't going to happen and once you accept that you can properly appreciate what she's doing and how she's transforming every era. Do I want her to be super successful? OF COURSE I DO but I do not want it at the expense of her vision.

Seeing her snapchat from earlier and the genuine tears when she heard the song on radio.. that innate feeling of love I felt for her at that moment, that's what makes me a die hard fan, not only being here for her to nab #1s like most of the Twitter/forum "fans" are.

Hmmmm. I don't hate it but I'm not massively feeling this if I'm honest, like Lewwww I'm not sold on the key change at all and the whole thing feels like it's over too soon without ever necessarily getting going. I'll give it a few more chances though as her lead singles do tend to grow on me.

Artpop is the best example of her trying to recreate that mega sound her fans want now. She then does a 180 and her stans hate that to the point they send death threats to Tony Bennett . Then she does what Gaga does BEST and that's experimenting with new sounds and that's what was missing from 'Artpop' minus a few amazing tracks.

I hate stans that care more about having a chart topper instead of hearing their "favorite artist" be exactly that, an artist. Not feeling the song is fine as taste is subjective. There is always this immense pressure on female pop stars to deliver this track that EVERYONE will love just in order for their stans to waltz around with a "my fave is charting better than your fave" badge and it's really starting to grate on my nerves. If a song is a hit, that should be because it was received well by the GP. We, as self declared stans of female artists, need to stop comparing their current work to their biggest hit and open up ourselves to appreciate their artistic vision.

Want to hear a different kind of track? Devastated that your mother monster didn't construct the hit you envisioned? Go create it yourself then and try your hand at this trade. See how long you last under the spotlight of your biggest stans wanting you to compromise your art for some contrived manufactured shit for the sake of being more popular than her peers. Shit is unhealthy.

Exactly this! If she wanted to do a generic pop hit that sounded like Lean On or something, she would. I would much rather she did the music she wanted and it was real and with feeling, than her do a heartless pop banger just to get a hit and have her disown it a couple of years later as something she wasn't proud of. Obviously I want it to be good either way, fundamentally, and I adore this song so it's the best of both worlds. Besides, she can't just keep recreating The Fame Monster every time she does a campaign, that would be so tedious and it would feel so forced and probably enjoyable also, because she's done that already. It just proves her talent and artistic vision that she can jump from genre to genre like this and it totally fits her. I'm sure if she came out with something that was a safe, obvious hit, she'd get flack for taking the easy road


As Tyler said, not liking the song obviously is fine, because music is possibly the most subjective thing, but I am so fed up of the amount of people who are moaning about it for the wrong reasons. If you don't like the musical style, her vocals grate on you a bit, fine, but I've seen way too many people complaining because it's not another Bad Romance. Well guess what, NOTHING will ever be another Bad Romance because to top that or even come close will be incredibly difficult for any artist, not just Gaga herself.

Let's be real, if Gaga were to do something completely generic (like a cheaper version of a Chainsmokers production) it would be slated just as much by the fans as "Perfect Illusion" was. They'd be crying out that she's running out of ideas and selling her soul or something while the general public would be eating it up. It's like she can't win.

Not everything has to be about the money, and not every successful era needs to be rehashed. Do we want Gaga to succeed? Sure. We've seen countless times where artists aren't slaying the charts like they had been before but we're just happy that they produced something that was of the heart rather than something that was practically half-assed and phoned in. I mean, look at Glory: some of the songs on the album don't even sound like hits but Britney is promoting her ass off, performing more cohesively and coming closer to her prime than she did in the past decade and that's all we really want from her, and that's to be happy doing what you do. Gaga seems to be in a better place to where she was experimenting with new styles and producing songs that are way off the edge of what sounds like a hit and, who knows? It might end up being a hit anyway. But in the end she's happy. And if she's happy, I'm happy.

I went back to listening to Born This Way and parts of ARTPOP, and there were so many styles that she incorporated and included within the album along with the standard pop sound of that year. There were glam rock influences, she combined styles such as bolero baroque, and a Wild West sound with pop, and she brought back eras that we've only heard through the nostalgia factor, and I'm sitting here thinking "What hasn't she done yet?" Maybe that's what Gaga is telling us: there are so many different combinations of genres that she hasn't touched on yet and she needs to once again crack this "perfect illusion" that you can only succeed with one type of sound.

And for those who don't think Gaga can't do well with this type of sound: you might be surprised. "Yoü & I", a blues-influenced track with a guitar solo written by Brian May of Queen, made it to #6 on Billboard and that wasn't even a lead single.

Okay, my first post was pretty crap and seeing as so many people have elaborately detailed why they like the song, I've listened to it a second time despite absolutely nothing luring me in the first time round. It actually felt worse second time round, but it's so baffling. It feels like the longest 3 minutes known to man whilst still leaving me thinking "is that it?" in the same breath. Largely because once you've heard the first 45 seconds, you've essentially heard the whole song minus a painfully off key key change.

For all the producers involved and the time it's taken since the last album to get this out, I almost can't believe this is all she has to show in her moment of 'comeback'. It isn't completely awful by any means, but the only particular endearing thing about it is the "it wasn't laaarghve" bits (and the intro) which are still eaten into by some horrific false accent. Listening to her past albums the other day highlighted how amazing her middle 8's are for example, where's the golden touches like that to elevate the track from being anything other than a structure-less repetition. It's nowhere as big as her strained vocals would have you believe when it all boils down to it and I think it's actually worse on second listen when you get past the confusion of it all.

Good luck to her though, here's to a better second single.

PI seems to be dropping everywhere on iTunes and hasn't really mustered up a great lead anyway so I'm not sure we're looking for totally amazing first week debuts. Not sure if radio will pick it up too much either but it seems to have had a good start on Spotify which could be its saving grace if we're talking commercial success.
