BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: SevenSeize 5th April 2020, 03:32 PM

It could be a seventh week at #1 for The Weeknd's Blinding Lights, or another chart topper for fellow Canadian star Drake with Toosie Slide. Matt Lucas releases his NHS charity single Thank You Baked Potato, plus new tracks come from DaBaby, Troye Sivan, The 1975 and Frank Ocean

will Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia take the #1 album spot after a narrow miss last week? All Time Low release their latest album Wake Up, Sunshine!, with new releases from Headie One/Fred Again, Thundercat, Mystery Jets, Yves Tumor and Purity Ring

Breakdown of the week
- Saturday: Some information may be posted on social media but it is likely to be missing most streaming data and is unrepresentative.
- Sunday: Official First Look Chart on Radio 1 from 6-7pm. Please do not post spoilers on the forum in advance as this ruins the countdown for any listeners.
- Monday: OCC Top 100 from 5:45pm
- Tuesday: Top 40 update as and when we receive them with requests, this is NOT 100% guaranteed however. The OCC may publish sales flashes of their own accord but likewise, this is not guaranteed. Twitter and social media is your friend for today. Please post any information you find with a source. Do not nag for updates, we will post a top 40 update if we receive one.
- Wednesday: Top 40 update from Music Week from 5:45, and potential top 5 sales but this is not guaranteed.
- Thursday: See Tuesday.

Other notes (please read)
- You may make requests Tuesday to Thursday but outside the top 40, specific positions will not be revealed (unless deemed necessary by a mod).
- Please do not demand a midweek update, one will be posted as and when we receive the information. Patience is a virtue.
- Sales information will be given out as deemed necessary by a moderator, please bear this in mind when making requests. Most requests for sales will be ignored.
- To keep everyone in the loop of all chart action, please refer to the iTunes and Spotify threads.

Little Mix definitely still can get a big hit with the right promo. Unfortunately, this is a difficult time to do promo, so they are reliant on playlist support. I imagine the song will still be a respectable hit they sticks around the top 40 longer than bounce back did.

I feel like they are in that post-imperial phase period where their success relies on strong material and anything sub-par may get snubbed by streaming platforms and radio. I don't know what happened with Syco but I can't help but think they'd be more successful if they didn't switch to RCA.

Posted by: dj_tim_e 6th April 2020, 07:47 PM

The songs haven't been up to much for a long time now and, even though the current song is good it's just come out at the wrong time. Then again maybe they have their tried and tested-type remix featuring a rent-a-rapper ready to release in a few weeks.

To be fair Little Mix have ridden the wave for a lot longer than I thought they would - the average successful phase for a pop band is about 5 years. It will be interesting to see where they go from here - do they keep churning out minor hits and moderately successful albums or do they call it a day and embark on solo careers?

But which will have bigger sales overall? Which will have a bigger impact? I know most would prefer these things than winning whatever last week was. Nothing against 5SOS, the album is also good. I just think it's obvious that FN is performing a lot better in every way.

To be fair Little Mix have ridden the wave for a lot longer than I thought they would - the average successful phase for a pop band is about 5 years. It will be interesting to see where they go from here - do they keep churning out minor hits and moderately successful albums or do they call it a day and embark on solo careers?

I think it'll depend on their concert sales. If they keep on selling out arenas like The Vamps, they'll be fine. (unless they of course want to break up)

I think they'll probably climb back into the top 20 next week tbh. I assume Radio 1 will B list them, they're slowly climbing on Spotify and airplay etc. They seem to be doing better than the likes of Rita, Ellie and Anne Marie (The latter who has had huge support).

'What A Man Gotta do' will be certified Silver (for 200,000 chart sales) on Friday. It's had quite a meandering run between numbers 22 and 33 in the past three months.

It's chart position clearly doesn't represent it's success then if it's going silver. I love the song wish it had gone top 10 it's my favourite song in a long time. I've never been a JB fan but since their come back I think they are fab wub.gif

They should have taken this year off and then come back in 2021 with a new album and a 10 years of Little Mix hits tour.

They definitely deserve credit there. Going strong after 8 years with no line-up changes. Surely they are the longest running major girl group in recent history (from debut)?

This! It’s such a great album from start to finish and is worthy of a #1 especially with the longevity so far, hopefully with sales so low and the fact he does well on streaming it could get a chance over the coming weeks.

I still find it so odd that people are so quick to brand Little Mix’s recent chart performance as a flop?

even based on its second week chart performance, it far exceeds the peak of the recent singles of acts people will happily brand successful like Anne Marie, Rita Ora or Ellie Goulding?

A top 10 debut, especially for a pop act in their 9th year, is nothing to turn your nose up at - how many other girl groups were still creating Top 10 singles that far into their career?

The interesting thing about Little Mix is that there aren't really any comparable girl groups. Every one I can think of that even managed a 9th year did so through personnel changes (Sugababes), a long break (Girls Aloud) or on the back of reunion hype (Spice Girls, Bananarama, Destiny's Child). With Little Mix, they are in waters that have been uncharted for decades. Once the X Factor hype was done they managed a pretty successful run to 2015, managed to get bigger by album 3 which is almost unheard of, then bigger still by album 4. It took until their 5th "era" to start making the time-honoured mistake of getting above their station and thinking they could do better without the teams that put them where they were. And, as is often the case, it has failed to impress.

I personally think that Little Mix were made in the right period of time, were able to use X Factor promo while the show was at its peak a la Cheryl and had the right people making the material for them. Now they don't have X Factor/Syco to fall back on. And without decent music to fall back on, I think their days are numbered. This isn't a Little Mix bash by the way. It's so depressing that the only remaining British girl group that's really visible is relatively floppy because I used to LOVE Little Mix, even before everyone else jumped on the bandwagon during the Black Magic period.

As much as I think Louis Walsh is a bit of a knob, he was right when he said that a pop group is only as good as its last 2 singles and, Little Mix's last 2 singles were a dull Christmas turd and a cheap non-song with a bad 80s interpolation. It's quite sad really.

With reference to the 3 solo females you mentioned at the start, none of them have shown longevity and consistency chart-wise in a way that Little Mix have. So, I don't think that people are unfairly branding Little Mix's current single as a flop to be honest, but, that's just my opinion. Each to their own and all that smile.gif

I don't think anyone has branded it a flop? Just that they're well past their imperial phase. The debate is whether they'll ever have a big hit again.

Posted by: Gerald 7th April 2020, 11:35 PM

I think Little Mix could get another big hit if they release another catchy song like Touch (their best single/song to date). Break Up Song is a step in the right direction but the hook could have been stronger. I have no doubt their new album will do well though.

So happy to see Powfu top 10 and BENEE top 20. w00t.gif wub.gif yahoo.gif

Posted by: Jonjo 8th April 2020, 12:59 AM

Wow this kinda talk about Break Up Song is a bit premature, no? It's doing similarly to Bounce Back with MUCH less instant support from streaming, radio playlisting. It was straight to A on R1 the week of release as well as some Capital support etc.. - so far BUS has huge Capital support but is currently only on C-list of R1 the week after release (C-list never has much effect), various TV performances. All it needs is that extra push on Spotify (which it's slowly getting/increasing on) considering a performance is more or less not an option atm.

The song seems to have been received really well in general and it will be a rare case for a pre-album Little Mix release, where they have to build on everything as opposed to getting it instantly. It's trajectory is quite similar to Gaga's latest release atm - just minus the video (which has been scrapped due to current situation - although they're working on something). A great/solid debut with a 10 place (about 11 or 12 for LM?) 2nd week drop but stabilising as airplay and streaming build. It's holding strong on iTunes (yeah iTunes is meaningless nowadays, I know) but it's showing that the audience is receptive to it, at least. It's holding up incredibly well in the 13-15 region on Apple Music (with occasional slips to about 18 - but recovering relatively quickly) due to the support there, but they just need to replicate that support on Spotify (which I assume is still the biggest streaming platform?) and they started that yesterday by being moved up from 24 to 18 yesterday on Hot Hits.

I can see this sticking around longer than BB did at least. They'll need to follow this up with something just as strong/stronger and they'll be back to where they were just 4 singles ago.

All just my two cents ofc laugh.gif

Definitely think this will do better than Bounce Back, much more commercial pop sounding. I expect a similar run to Never Really Over if it does actually get more support on Spotify. As with that song, if the follow up is poor, then it won’t do much for bringing support back. 100% a step in the right direction again after the last 2 singles. I hope for more pop with the next album.

Radio is just starting to get behind the track, so I think that’ll now shake things up and make things interesting hopefully.

I’m not sure we’ve ever seen a girl group have to face such a challenge as switch from the sales market; to a heavily dominated steaming world - and still hold up.

Also just seen Spain has suspended their chart saying it’s irrelevant.

He'd only have to sell a few hundred more copies to have sold more than #40 last week, so I think it could happen but it's not guaranteed yet

Sales are low but the album chart is actually interesting seeing so many old albums appear highly.

Also just seen Spain has suspended their chart saying it’s irrelevant.

I really hope the UK doesn’t do this! The chart is one of my only things I look forward too and it provides such an escape from what’s going on outside.

I really can't see this happening in the UK, sales are low but not quite that low and they should stay at this sort of level over the next few weeks or however long the lockdown continues for.

Report from MW -

QUOTE
The Official Charts Midweek Sales Flash is in, and Dua Lipa is odds-on to claim her first No.1 album.

After narrowly missing out on the top spot in last week's chart, Future Nostalgia holds a commanding lead - selling 10,185 copies, almost double that of Lewis Capaldi's Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent, which sits at No.2 on sales of 5,674.

Reigning chart-topper Calm (1,934 sales) by 5 Seconds Of Summer drops to No.12, while Thundercat's It Is What It Is is the highest new entry at No.13.

Blinding Lights by The Weeknd is all but assured of retaining its status as the UK's No.1 single, moving 50,694. Second place Roses by Saint Jhn is a considerable way back on 37,956 sales, while Drake is straight in at No.3 with Toosie Slide (37,787 sales).

Dua Lipa again has three singles in the Top 10: Physical (3-4, 28,170 sales), Don't Start Now (4-5, 26,220 sales) and Break My Heart (6-7, 18,785 sales).

They're also still selling incredible ticket numbers. Please give it a rest so we can get back to the topic of the thread.

well not really, because most of 5SOS album sales rely on crazed fans buying multiple cassette copies and CD bundles which only helped them in the first week, their 2nd week drop just proved how indifferent is the general public to their music, and their overall sales tally will further prove that....

Posted by: ___∆___ 9th April 2020, 11:34 AM

TBH I think 5SOS have held up really well - their official online store has been out of stock of all formats since Friday last week so this week it’s only streaming/downloads and any physicals from online stores like HMV etc.,

Niall dropped from 1-12 a few weeks ago, most pop acts with a passionate fan base and encouragement of multi buying drop heavily in the subsequent weeks.

Right place, right time for Abel. The streaming market is gonna be static/negligible week on week from now. If BL can fortuitously keep managing to get the odd increase every 2/3 weeks it's not inconceivable it'll reign at the top for many more weeks and months to come. Unlikely, granted but not unmanageable.

The album charts have literally turned into how the singles charts were years ago when physicals were still a thing. Everything is focused on week 1 and it seems anything after that is a bonus.

I feel now with album build up and tracks released for streaming some albums are essentially over on week 1 - must be really disappointing for an artist that’s worked hard on producing an album to see it go 6-93-Out.

Posted by: Bjork 10th April 2020, 08:15 AM

I think for indie artists it almost makes no sense to release the album without a physical cos it's not a fair fight
Mabel and Jax Jones will get 3000 sales a week from playlists alone without a single person streaming their album
Indie artists have zero songs on playlists so they really cannot compete when you need to stream an album 85 times to get 1 sale
Indie artists that were doing a 3-56 run, now will do a 39-OUT run :/

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 10th April 2020, 08:22 AM

Well it depends if they care about chart positions or not - ATL were saying to the OCC that they just wanted the album out for the fans.

Their overall sales will likely be about the same once the physicals are out anyway.

Posted by: Bjork 10th April 2020, 08:44 AM

yes but one thing is what the band says and a different thing is what the label thinks

Posted by: krissykins 10th April 2020, 09:19 AM

With the extra efforts pulled last week (voice notes and cocktails) and the Weekend having 90 items of merch available, record companies still care about album chart positions, only for week 1.
