BuzzJack Music Forum _ Lady Gaga _ Is Judas Steps-lite cheese?

Posted by: HausofTove 6th August 2019, 04:39 PM

Is this single from Gaga, merely Steps*-lite cheese as some seem to be suggesting on the forum? ohmy.gif

Let's settle this once and for all x

*for the sake of this thread - a Steps sounding song is not a good thing ~

Posted by: HausofTove 6th August 2019, 04:42 PM

No x

It's fairly simple as far as her choruses go, but it's not "lite" or "cheese" or anything of the sort. If it should sound like something Steps would've done, then i'm all the more fan for it!

I remember thinking when 'Judas' first came on my radar, that it was really cool. I guess it still is, I just can't remember the last time I listened to it 🙃

When did Steps become the go-to comparison for pop choruses?

Posted by: dandy* 6th August 2019, 04:56 PM

YES.

But only the chorus. It's not just the fact it's tinny as hell, it's the melody and everything else about it. It's just such a let down after the verses and production of the rest of the track.

Omfg THIS!!!! to ALL of this!!!

It's embarrassing to listen to the song! No wonder it flopped. I thought it sounded massive when I first heard the first verse ... and then the chorus hit and we all overdosed on cheese and died along with her mainstream pop career.

It's tinny, jaunty, cheesy, and jarringly poppy. Steps would love to dance to it!

Yeah the chorus is definitely my least favourite part haha, but I still don't particularly dislike the chorus either.

That steps video was just embarrassing for them tbh. Appalling vocally and they turned a great song into sounding like a Eurovision car crash.

Steps would never release a song like Judas though. Lyrically it beats any steps song in existence and I’ve never ever got the whole steps / Judas thing lol.

EDIT: Do Steps really read this forum? It’s crazy to think they literally done a Judas mash up.

Omfg we have concrete video PROOF and some of y'all are still denying the TRUTH! Cognitive dissonance 101. Frwud would want to study y'all

Steps know their brand, rheir image, and know when someone's pawnin it. That's why they covered Judas - to send shayde that they recognise that song as Steps! And also because it fits their sound - they even blend it with one of their songs seemlessly!! That's how Steps-lite it is!

Posted by: Jordan Lee 6th August 2019, 11:23 PM

If any pop girl has a steps sounding track it’s Ariana with no tears left to cry (a song I LOVE tbh so I’m not shading her)

But it is very like Summer of love especially the start (the video version with the slow ethereal like starts, the choir sounding ahhhhh ahhhhh oooooh oooooh) then both songs go into being up tempo at the same time.

Posted by: Medellíam 6th August 2019, 11:31 PM

I don't know how to answer the poll... Yes it does sound quite Steps in its chorus (I too could see Steps doing a dance routine to it) but that doesn't make it bad. Steps have some absolute bangers. I'M CALLING POPISM!!!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 6th August 2019, 11:51 PM

It's a terrible song and one of her worst singles, steps are a million times above a song like this.

Posted by: Jonjo 6th August 2019, 11:56 PM

The chorus is just all out pop. I don't get how it's "STEPS LITE CHEEEESE"! laugh.gif sad.gif

I genuinely can't hear them performing it at all?

You can hear them doing it right now x

Posted by: blacksquare 7th August 2019, 11:21 AM

My problem with Judas was always how that bubblegum chorus came out of nowhere. And the fact it was chosen as a single at all. Oop.

I think more Abba than I do Steps though. Semantics~

Thanks for actually providing receipts for once x

But nah. I feel 'Judas' chorus is a lot more polished and less Steps friendly than people think. Them performing it on tour was cute and so many artists do that with songs but doesn't necessarily mean the songs they blend them in with are necessarily "*insert artist here*-lite cheese"

---

The chorus to Judas is SO poppy, no denying that. But I feel that's what makes it stick out. Especially after the verses! (And I still can't hear Steps releasing/recording a song like this)

Absolutely - but it is all the better for it x

Posted by: Spiceboy 7th August 2019, 12:30 PM

Ok first of all that chorus is Kylie not Steps so should be saying Kylie 80’s lite cheese if we are using that song as an example...

Second Judas is rubbish the chorus is nowhere near melodic or catchy enough to be like a Steps song. I love Gaga but Judas really is the blip in her career a terrible song.

Posted by: SKOB 7th August 2019, 02:08 PM

Lmao it did nothing to her career biggrin.gif

It was a top ten in both UK and US and TEOG followed and charted even better, no harm done there.

Judas even reached #74 in the Year End Chart and it has 81 million listens on Spotify, more than Y&I and MTN and not much less than TEOG.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 7th August 2019, 02:27 PM

Judas like many Gaga songs too may have went onto peak higher in the UK but ended up being released mid week.

I’m pretty sure Born This Way, Judas, The Edge Of Glory and Applause would’ve had higher peaks if they debuted on a full week despite them all being top ten hits.

Posted by: Medellíam 7th August 2019, 02:32 PM

2011 was when only some artists were doing on air / on sale so their chart runs would look messy compared to others and I feel like Gaga suffered because of that. I'm sure there were some other factors too but I dare not look back because it'll annoy me at what could have been regarding the success of the Born This Way singles! laugh.gif

Yes it is rubbish, but the chorus is so so cheesy it could easily be a Steps song!! I.agine the verses with cheesier dinky-fink music, like the chorus, with hammy vocals, and there ya have it

Posted by: dandy* 7th August 2019, 04:48 PM

People should not be assessing the whole song, we’re only claiming the chorus is Steps-esque!

Exactly this!! It makes it even worse because the chorus is so jarring and so at odds with the verses!! Imagine Steps with the whole song, maybe not, although they performed all of it and belnded the lot oops, but imagine them with the chorus, 100%.

They were comfortable enough to blend it with one of their cheesy 90s songs!

The verses are edgy pop and thrn it descends into a Stop/ Tragedy/ Better the Devil/ etc style chorus!!

Oh really? Then why do Spices sing the covers they were gonna release on the third album - Sisters, Celebration, and We Are Family? As they are on brand! Steps aren't gonna suddenly cover Metallica. They know Steps and they hear it in Judas, so they are just reclaiming their sound!

Look at Madonna and Born This Way. She could hear her brand:

(But ignore her bitter saltiness.)

She also blended her song with an identical GaGa one. That's what Steps were channelling with theirs too. They know their brand. They just couldn't be AS obviously shady as Madonna, and honestly probably felt pleased that GaGa carried on their sound. They will have liked the homage. It also gives them a new song and a stupid dance to do on tour.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 9th August 2019, 05:41 AM

I adore Steps and I actually did enjoy that Better the Devil You Know/Judas mash-up during the tour! As a Gaga fan who loves Judas, I appreciated hearing it. I think they did a nice enough job.

I found an article from October 2011 where Lee from Steps mentions Judas: https://www.digitalspy.com/music/a344000/lady-gagas-judas-could-have-been-a-steps-song/

QUOTE
Lee Latchford-Evans added: "H said GaGa's 'Judas' could have been a Steps song - if you take away the imagery and just listen to the chorus."

Scott-Lee continued: "Also 'Edge of Glory' could have been one. We're not saying we influenced GaGa, but I think that's where we would see ourselves musically if we released a song today."

Fans definitely mentioned Judas in relation to Steps earlier than then, on Popjustice for example, so I think Steps/their management noticed the suggestion and evidently ran with it. Apparently they talk about Judas in one of their documentaries, so I'll have to try and find a clip!

I can certainly see why some people would think the Judas chorus sounds poppy in a Steps way, although Steps didn't spring to mind for me when I first heard Judas, I have to admit. So on that basis I've voted no.

Personally I think it's a great compliment if a song is compared to Steps choruses, in my opinion they have some of the catchiest pop songs ever! I think a lot of their songs have a depth to them that people may overlook, because they don't listen past the uptempo/happy/"cheesy" production. Some of their lyrics are really sad/tragic (proper definition of that word)! They're fantastic at happy/sad pop songs. They followed ABBA'S musical blueprint to great success.

Posted by: SKOB 9th August 2019, 06:24 AM

I do wonder why people don't think TEOG isn't Steps lite cheese because that is as much, if not even more!

Who knows if the others agreed with Lisa, but nevertheless she was entitled to her opinion that The Edge of Glory is evocative of a sound Steps could have done themselves. In essence I see where she may have been coming from. Edge has an upbeat/euphoric production, combined with a female power vocal. That was often Steps’ remit... Claire can certainly belt it out. I can imagine her doing the song justice in a live setting!

Perceived quality is obviously subjective, but as far as I’m concerned Steps have released a large number of high quality songs, and their very best efforts aren’t exactly a million miles away from some of Gaga’s best. I don’t expect people to agree and I’m not looking for people to scorn me for saying so, that’s just my personal feeling.

If we apply some context, when Lisa said that, Gaga had only been a huge successful name for a couple of years, she was incredibly fresh and current - but she hadn’t quite cemented herself as being an all-time great that early on. Judas and The Edge of Glory were extremely new songs. So it might not have seemed quite as outlandish back in 2011 for Lisa to dare say that Steps could tackle those songs, that were chart hits, not yet classics. I’d say Edge is now something of a 10s classic and it’s by somebody who could now easily be described of the biggest stars of all time, so maybe it seems funnier in the here and now that Lisa said what she said~
