I can't remember the exact years but for a long time there were songs which seemed to be all based on the template for Lean On which I didn't enjoy, it was way too much and for too long. I'm glad that's over. Some of those songs were good but a lot I found to be very forgettable.

B-b-but I thought Brexit Britain would lead the world in our exceptionalism! In all seriousness, I think that's a bit of a factor too - the country seems to have lost its confidence, a huge amount of its money, its reputation and also affects ability of British acts to build up a name in touring in Europe. Also talking about the big 2, Adele barely releases anything and Ed Sheeran's music doesn't seem to cut through in the more cynical post pandemic world, although can't write him off completely. Yeh but there’s always been difficult times in the past and usually that creates more genius acts such as the Sex Pistols in the mid-70s! Plus it’s just Spotify playlists favouring world wide acts! |

I'm not following that "2016 was bad" discourse - was it the quality of songs? 2017 was way worse imo. For me it was more the chart was quite dull to follow at that year. It seemed like a really slow year. 2017 was worse musically though I’d agree on that! 2015-2017 in general were quite brutal on solo females though. Like so many hits what didn’t scrape top ten. The top ends of the chart were very male heavy in those years and a lot of similar sounding tracks smashing yet not necessarily standing test of time in the end. |
