13. Midnight (7/25 votes, 28%)

We've not been making the best decisions over the last few days and this is no exception. Alas, it couldn't last forever and we lose our last representation from Ghost Stories, still, it really had an excellently unexpected run, easily being the best performing non-top 40 single here and outlasting both fellow singles from the album despite by far being the smallest hit, I guess it had a fanbase I never thought on here. Midnight is easily one of the most distinctive and experimental tracks Coldplay have ever done, reflected in the co-production credit by Jon Hopkins, much more folktronica and ambient than anything they've done, and led primarily by electronic subtle synths than guitars and with Chris' vocals entrenched by a vocoder, accompanied by a video that is almost entirely shot in thermal infra-red and negative imagery, its really quite a mysterious and unique offering in their back catalogue that I love so much, I really would highly recommend those that they always sound the same listen to this as that single-handedly rubbishes that claim. Of course, though it did create a lot of intrigue, it wasn't a big hit as this sound just doesn't sell and the rest of the album was fairly safe in comparison but I will forever appreciate that they tried this and think it's one of their most important and for me best moments of modern day Coldplay. Farewell, Midnight, we shall miss you.

Ok good! Now I turn to Every Teardrop...

'Midnight' not only the longest lasting non top 40 hit but actually the longest lasting non top 10 hit, outlasting 6 of their 18 top 10s! That's a fantastic result for it really, definitely up there with the best of their recent output and I wish they made more songs in that style.

'Trouble' once again for me x

For me, it's their best to date song, huge part in it's success belongs to marvelous Jon Hopkins whose track is sampled on Midnight. Actually "Amphora", the track I am talking about, is as beautiful as Midnight.

I knew Jon Hopkins was involved with it but actually wasn't aware that it was a sample!

actually it's Amphora with Chris Martin vocal, that's why so many Coldplay fans moaned about this not being Coldplay song.

Here's Jon's work.
