Shame Olivia hadn’t seen much of an uplift after 4 sold out nights at the O2 as well as other uk shows, she was absolutely amazing live!

Does anyone know why streams at the top of the chart have skyrocketed recently? It's great to see, but I can't think of a reason that explains it happening so drastically and so suddenly. I get why Taylor, etc. would have huge streams but what about all the other songs. Have loads of people simulatenously decided they like current pop music again? I can't figure it out. When it first happened I thought it was just coincidentally a few big hits at the same time but it's happening again and again and again and I think it's just the new normal now. But why? It annoys me when a big shift happens in the music market and I can't figure out the reason. This is a really interesting question, maybe one that deserves its own thread? Something seems to have changed quite recently in the streaming volumes, and I’d be interested to see if there’s any correlation with the very sudden and dramatic drop in UK acts and especially new UK acts getting anywhere high in the charts- are the autoplay algorithms favouring international acts over local acts, are some international streaming subscribers being miscounted as UK users? |

Billie Eilish Amazon Update:
13. "CHIHIRO" 16. "LUNCH" 19. "WILDFLOWER" 28. "BIRDS OF A FEATHER" 30. "SKINNY" 31. "BLUE" 69. "THE GREATEST" 112. "L'AMOUR DE MA VIE" 132. "THE DINER" 160. "BITTERSUITE" Over half the album now in the top 40. Really impressed with how well it's held up/climbed throughout the week. The top songs seem to still be climbing so won't be surprised if a couple of them are in the top 10 soon. |

I think the bad moment for UK artists in the singles chart is cos nowadays what matters is Tiktok
2 years ago it was Hot Hits but now they cannot break hits anymore Hot Hits used to break a lot of hits, especially UK ones now it's all about Tiktok and the songs that become big there are global hits not UK ones |

Meh, I much prefer Hot Hits not having a complete monopoly on everything. That's what made 2016 such a hellish year.

tiktok has been a thing for ages but in the past the top 10 would be 8 songs pushed by Hot Hits and 2 from Tiktok
now it's 10 from Tiktok and since Tiktokt is a global thing, make sense to me that those 10 songs are not from the UK This post has been edited by Bjork: 23rd May 2024, 06:11 AM |

If the US goes through with their Tiktok ban it could all shift again in the next few months.

I find it weird that even the US-based Tiktok hits are bigger in the UK than domestically. Like the Mark Ambor and Michael Marcagi songs, Stick Season etc.

I’m here for new chart changes.
One thing I’ve enjoyed more lately is that physical formats in CDs are more of a thing (again) and cassettes etc obviously they’re more of a short term boost but I do like that there’s still little incentives for a physical. The chart is a bit more interesting to follow now than it was from 2016-2019 though (2016 especially was definitely a struggle like others have said) I think the 2020s decade and lockdown in a way made the charts a bit more exciting again. In terms of the UK I think it’s actually the album chart what needs looking at more than the singles chart (I’m definitely one of those who agrees with ACR on the whole and definitely in terms of the the tracks per artist rule) |

I'm not following that "2016 was bad" discourse - was it the quality of songs? 2017 was way worse imo.

Shame Things Can Only Get Better didn’t manage to scrape into the top 200 seeing as it was used to drown out Rishi’s speech

I'm not following that "2016 was bad" discourse - was it the quality of songs? 2017 was way worse imo. Well yes, because of everybody trying to get on the Hot Hits playlist everything either sounded like mid-tempo cheap Cassio keyboard "tropical" or like that printer jamming Chainsmokers sound, and the chart was the most stagnant and sluggish it had ever been. 2017 wasn't much better, but things started to improve a little bit after that. |
