What I find more surprising is Eurythmics were #1 with I Saved the world today?
there was a bit of buzz cos it was their comeback together after they split up in 89
but don't recall the song being so successful especially in Europe, was it really?

after the single, the parent album barely troubled the charts
and don't think there was even a 2nd single

It spent 4 weeks at the top of the airplay chart, blocking Tina Turner. In terms of the sales charts, it wasnt a huge hit anywhere but it did do decently (in Finland it reached #2). It was the perfect fit for radio at the time.

They did release a followup named 17 Again in Europe in early 2000, but wasnt nearly as successful. Only reached #27 in the UK. Radio was once again, far more receptive.

and certainly in the UK Radio 2 and commercial radio stations in the 90's were hugely big on veterans like Tina Turner, Phil Collins, Simply Red and anything that might appeal to the target audience of folk in their 30's/40's. Thats why I listened to radio 1 back then - just to avoid the more bland product being pushed. Radio 1 still played older acts (like Cher) but avoided playlisting the MOR ballads....

Nowadays Radio 1 has a Logan's Run policy in effect for music, give or take a handful of acts.

Yeh Eurythmics are a shock there - didn't even realise it was a comeback.
