I know it’s unlikely, but would Britney’s ‘Mood Ring’ be on SCR if it charted?

It's never been available in the UK before so yes. (The songs from Drake's 'Care Package' were the same). But yeah, probably unlikely to be challenging for the top 100 anyway.

I've got a theoretical question here for anyone who knows the answer regarding Perfect.
Say Perfect theoretically continued to avoid ACR until Christmas (worryingly I feel this is a genuine possibility), but got pushed off the top 100 by the Christmas songs. Would it being pushed out of the chart mean that it was placed on permanent ACR or would it be able to return after Christmas on SCR? |

It makes sense if you see its average position as a sort of equilibrium that it fluctuates around due to intangible factors. Like, say someone had it on a playlist of theirs that they listened to on a Friday instead of a Wednesday, it's effectively transferring a stream of the song from one tracking week to the other, taking a stream from the first and adding it to the second, and giving it a net gain of +2 streams week on week compared to if they had listened to it on Wednesday instead. As it is a ''new'' (read: modern) song, I would expect that it should gradually drop over time as it reaches its capacity for exposure, but if not, then indeed a slow week could suggest it's more likely to pick up next week. Alternatively, if you have a pair of dice and you roll low, there's a greater chance that your next roll will be better than that, even if not necessarily a high roll in isolation. Rolling successively lower results 3 times in a row is fairly unlikely, and that's all Perfect needs to avoid. Slow weeks do matter, yeah, but from the statistical point of view it hardly matters if a song is declining or rising the week before. Everything goes back to zero and there’s no correlation between two particular weeks. The data gets refreshed and streams start getting counted from scratch based on multiple factors including exposure. Past exposure does affect things but this is more about the song’s lasting power and the fanbase we are talking about that is put to the test. What you described is left to chance entirely. Not a very relevant comparison as this is not dice and listening habits don’t depend on chance. |

what's funny is that one of the key factor is weather I really think Dua avoided it cos this last week was sunny and streams increased overall as they always do when the weather is nice
3 weeks of rain and Perfect would be gone This post has been edited by Bjork: 30th May 2020, 08:42 AM |

Past exposure does affect things but this is more about the song’s lasting power and the fanbase we are talking about that is put to the test. What you described is left to chance entirely. Not a very relevant comparison as this is not dice and listening habits don’t depend on chance. That's kind of what I was saying. Since you're starting from scratch each week, then the main relevant aspect of a strong/weak week is that it's setting the bar to match for next week, and since a higher bar is harder to reach, a slow week helps it and vice versa. The total it arrives at each week is driven by natural consumption and it's not truly at equilibrium but from an outside perspective, it's just a lot of baseline inertia that it bounces around. Obviously it's not all random but I don't think it's unfair to suggest that there is an element of it in there. The moment someone shuffles a playlist that it's on and doesn't play every single song on said playlist (not because of skipping, just because they don't make it all the way through) all in the same tracking week, they've entirely left their yes/no state of whether or not "Perfect" gets a stream that week to random chance*. If they do complete the playlist but it takes more than one tracking week to do so, then that is a zero sum game for the prize of 1 stream between those two weeks. That might only make a small portion of its streaming total, but given how small the fluctuations are, it's not entirely insignificant either. *Of course, algorithms can't program in 'true randomness' but I assume you're not staking an argument on that |

Obviously Stupid Love is gonna get reset to SCR at the end of this week. Is it possible that 'Higher Love' & 'Rain' could also get reset, or too early to say?

Toosie Slide could avoid ACR due to the addition of the emote in Fortnite.

great to see, let's hope this gets the 12 year olds streaming!! #saveToosieSlide
I'm mostly hoping Juliet & Romeo can get a little boost this week to bag itself three more free weeks in the chart even if it's clearly never going to be a proper smash. |

'Higher Love' didn't increase very much on Spotify following the album release so I doubt it'll be reset.
