Scherzland, officially the Kingdom of Scherzland, is a country in Quilvoria and 30-time participant of the Buzzjack Song Contest.

It is a landlocked country with borders to Deandria in the North, Cadelicia and Land of Jack to the East, Tifoski & Summericia to the South and Skall to the West.

Scherzland has a total population of 12.2 million and has a low population density with the highest urban concentration in the central and north half of the country.

Scherzland is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy. It is a unitary state, divided into 12 counties.

The current monarch is Queen Nicole Scherzinger who maintains an official policy of neutrality in foreign affairs.

Scherzland has no religion or religious buildings and ranks highly in quality of life, health, eduction, protection of civil liberties,

economic competitiveness, equality, gender equality, prosperity and human development.

The national anthem of Scherzland is ‘Club Banger Nation’ and has since led to Scherzland to be dubbed the ‘Club Banger Nation’.

Scherzland is widely known as a pop country.

Opting to send pop or dance music to every contest since their participation began in 2009 - and will often rely on other countries within the pop bloc to qualify.

Of the 30 songs entered by Scherzland into the BJSC, 23 of their entries have been performed by women - their current entry, however, (‘Chemicals’ by SG Lewis) is performed by a male.

The Killer Love Commission are a board of selected experts who oversee Scherzland’s participation in the BJSC.

Since 2020, they have defined Scherzland’s history in the contest by classifying their entries by distinct eras. They are: Stentorian, Prosaic, Inefficacious & Renaissance.

The Stentorian period covers Scherzlands entries between the 13th and 21st Buzzjack Song Contests.

This period is defined as being loud, sonorous and cheap - outlined by the fact that 5 out of their 7 entries failed to qualify for the final of their respective contests.

Their first entry into the contest was ‘Halo’ by Bethany Joy Lenz, a song made popular by being featured in the teen drama ‘One Tree Hill’.

Lenz promoted the song with direction from the Killer Love Commission but the other countries failed to be impressed by the song and it failed to chart.

Their second attempt at the contest fared much better.

For BJSC 14, the country was represented by Kelly Clarkson with the song ‘Already Gone’ which gave them their first top 10 (9).

They rode the wave of success into the 15th contest where they attained another top 10, placing 7th with their Queen Nicole Scherzinger and The Pussycat Dolls & A.R Rahman performing ‘Jai Ho’.

Problems of indecisiveness within the Killer Love Commission cost the country dearly at every other contest within this period - 16th, 18th, 20th & 21st - as they failed to qualify for the finals.

Scherzland, at this time, received negative attention from other participating countries for being “too cheap” having sent a number of high-profiled singers and the country faced a backlash.

This caused Scherzland to exit the Buzzjack Song Contest.

Returning after 20 contests for what would be their second-longest run of the periods, the Prosaic period is classified as dry and unimaginative.

Despite remaining a pop country, Scherzland wanted (and failed) to find a defined sound upon their return,

noting that none of the tracks they’d sent in their first stint of the competition truly represented the country.

As such, the country embarked on a ‘balls to the wall’ strategy - trying a number of well-known and up-and-coming artists.

None of the 9 entries caused much of a stir and this was reflected in the scoring.

Their highest-peaking hit was reaching 12 with ‘Love Actually’ by Cady Groves, with middling performances from Jessica Lowndes and Sebastian Ingrosso & Alesso (13).

3 of their entries from this period failed to qualify - the last one being ‘One Night’ by Matthew Koma at the 53rd contest.

Scherzland exited the contest again, having failed to find their feet once more.

Scherzland sat out for much longer before this period (44 contests!) and returned for the 97th BJSC.

Artistically revamped with a new flag and art direction, the country was intent on being taken seriously.

Opting for a dance track finding its’ feet on BBC Radio 1 Xtra as their comeback choice, the song was met with admiration

for the most part, however some critics called the finding ‘uninspired’.

‘Never Did This Before’ by Black Saint made the finals but failed to pick up the points, limping in at 30 - seen as a disappointing result for the KLC.

Nevertheless, they ventured forward hoping to score big with Madison Beer - a singer associated with Justin Bieber- as they selected her song ‘Dead’ to represent them.

Disaster struck for the hopeful country as the song failed to resonate with listeners and it didn’t make it past the semi-final selection.

Sitting out one contest, seemingly to lick their wounds, the country returned with a change of tack - an R&B track in the form of ‘When Ur Sober’, performed by Taya.

Scherzland were happy the song made the finals but didn’t grab enough points on the night and placed 33rd.

The country were out of ideas - their efforts weren’t producing the desired effect and they exited the contest for the third time.

It may seem presumptuous to call this period the renaissance but the renewed interest and success is enough to warrant the title.

Their ‘comeback’ to the 113th contest - ‘Maybe You’re the Reason’ by The Japanese House - is considered a false-start as it failed to qualify.

Despite a few blips along the way (DNQ in 117, 27 in 116 and 31 in 119) Scherzland are finally seen as a contender.

Having rooted themselves into the contest for 9 months, vesting interest in the contest and finding discoveries,

their entries have been lauded as ‘bops’ and been favourites amongst some countries.

Since BJSC 118 (6 contests), they have qualified for each final and have placed within the top 15 five times.

They have hit the top 10 three times & the top 5 once with ‘Exit Sign’ by Kah-Lo, their most successful entry to date (BJSC 120).
