twenty one pilots
Shy Away

1st single from Scaled and Icy
Released: 7th April 2021
Label: Fueled By Ramen

Video

Biography

twenty one pilots' cathartic, iamspamspamamisink style—which folds in alt-rock, reggae, electronic music and rap—is one of the most unique, unclassifiable commercial sounds of the 2010s. Formed by friends Tyler Joseph, Nick Thomas and Chris Salih in Columbus, Ohio, the band took its name from Arthur Miller's play All My Sons, in which a contractor knowingly sends off faulty airplane parts to Europe during World War II, resulting in the death of 21 pilots. The band self-released two albums before making the leap to a subsidiary of Warner Music Group in 2012, shuffling ranks along the way before settling on singer-songwriter Joseph and drummer Josh Dun as its core members. As a duo, they delved further into the idiosyncrasies of their sound—characterised by a minimal blend of keyboards, driving drums and playful, self-probing lyrics—winning a Grammy in 2017 for their single “Stressed Out”. In 2018, they released the heavily anticipated Trench.

A practicing Christian, Joseph credits his faith—and the sustained internal dialogue that comes with it—as a source of inspiration, using his art as a platform to wrestle directly with his demons. Touring behind 2015’s Blurryface, for example, he covered his neck and arms with black greasepaint on stage—a visualisation of his insecurities. That honesty has earned the band a remarkably dedicated fanbase. “I never would have turned to music if I didn’t feel like I need to work on something or change or cope with something,” Joseph told Beats 1 host Zane Lowe in the weeks before releasing Trench. “I think that I was perfectly fine before music, and then something happened where I just felt, like, a buildup of some sort. And I didn’t know how to release that. I didn’t know how to decompress that and to have an outlet for it. And I was forced to learn how to play the piano.”

Years & Years
Starstruck

1st single from forthcoming studio album
Released: 8th April 2021
Label: Polydor

Video

Biography

As Years & Years, Olly Alexander has become one of the world’s most trailblazing modern pop stars. Across two hugely successful albums to date, the singer, actor, and cultural vanguard has earned 5 Brit Award nominations, sold-out numerous global tours, and played triumphant homecoming shows at London’s O2 and Wembley Arena. Along the way, Olly has also become a fearless, once-in-a-generation voice on important discussions around mental health, and issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community. This has been marked by a number of standout moments, ranging from Alexander's defiant speeches at Glastonbury in 2016 in the wake of events in Orlando to his BBC Documentary ‘Olly Alexander: Growing Up Gay’, plus the dizzyingly creative world around 'Palo Santo' (a record that arrived with an ambitious short film starring Judi Dench and Ben Whishaw). In 2021 Olly led the cast of critically acclaimed and huge hit drama ‘It’s A Sin’ (Channel 4/HBO Max). The show broke records on All 4 since its premiere, with over 18 million views to date (the platform’s biggest ever instant box-set) and received an incredible reception from fans and critics alike. Following the show’s broadcast, the Terrence Higgins Trust reported a four-fold increase in HIV Testing Week stats from previous years. Years & Years push boundaries by challenging notions of identity and sexuality in a way that is new to pop music - and totally Olly Alexander’s own. - Spotify

I have to comment on twenty-one pilots not making the Top 40 because... well, look at my profile pic … why wouldn't I?

Truth is, I never expect them to make the charts. Stressed Out was such an iconic song for them, and Heathens was from the Suicide Squad soundtrack, but everything else has fallen short of the Top 40. If Shy Away climbs at all or becomes a slow-burner then great, but it's not something that I'm going to be on the edge of my seat to see if it happens.

They're still the best group ever in my opinion.

When people say about how songs speak to them and that they have that deep effect on them... I've never understood that until I listened to ToP.

Anyway... I'll finish my hero-worship now... I'm sure you get the drift... smile.gif

I'm glad the chart is back on the radio this week, obviously I understand the situation last week so it couldn't be helped but it's nice to have it back.

Here are my retro faves

Damn, Emma Bunton, that was such a bop!

Biography

There’s a moment in a 2020 interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe where Justin Bieber begins—quietly, hesitantly—to cry. “It was hard for me being that young and being in the industry, and not knowing where to turn, and everyone telling me they love me, and just turning their back on you in a second,” Bieber says, each clause kicking up memories like dust. The point isn’t to weep with or for him—he had more dreams come true in his first 25 years than most people manage in a lifetime. But he’s also one of the few pop stars of his generation to have truly grown up in public, weathering the cable newsification of celebrity culture in the internet era while still trying to develop as both an artist and a person. Even early on, you could tell he had his eye on the future, balancing a doe-eyed wholesomeness with earnest attempts at hip-hop and R&B, material that suited him as a kid with material that reflected his growth into adolescence and adulthood. Some teen-pop singers end up trapped in amber; Justin Bieber has, knocks and all, kept swimming.

Born in London, Ontario, in 1994, Bieber was famously discovered when his future manager, Scooter Braun, stumbled on some performance videos that Bieber’s mom had uploaded to YouTube to share with family and friends. Braun, who understood not only Bieber’s appeal but the potential of the internet, encouraged him to keep making videos and keep the equipment cheap—an approach that not only helped Bieber’s growing fanbase to understand that he was still just a kid like them, but drafted a new blueprint for how artists could reach audiences in the digital era. With the exception of a voice change around 2011, 2009’s My World, 2010's My World 2.0 and 2012's Believe are more or less of a piece: the sound of a boy trying to stick the landing into puberty. Released in 2015, Purpose showed Bieber developing a more thoughtful connection to his material, including collaborations with vanguard pop producers like Diplo, Skrillex and benny blanco. After a five-year break during which Bieber underwent significant personal changes—including a detox from touring life, a diagnosis of Lyme disease and a epiphanic marriage to Hailey Baldwin—he came back with 2020’s Changes. “People have been putting me on a pedestal,” Bieber told Apple Music. ""I didn’t ask for that. Obviously I love making music, but there are a lot of people that love making music and they’re not in the position that I’m in. I’m just trying to steward that wisely, steward my relationship wisely. I want people to take a look at my story—hopefully, my words can make a difference.”

I'm not keen on Peaches being number one, hopefully Lil Nas X can hold on, that other contender didn't sound too good either.

Tbh, Anyone is a more deserving #1 than Peaches imo

Biography

Wes Nelson
22-year-old Staffordshire born Wes Nelson has just released his brand new single, See Nobody. A glossy, confident, effortlessly charming track that is centered around a ridiculously melodic hook, written by Wes and produced by Ayo Beatz [Fredo, Dutchavelli, Young M.A]. Featuring rap star Hardy Caprio, the super smooth Afrobeat-meets-R&B single brilliantly showcases Wes’s considerable talents as a vocalist and songwriter. - Spotify

Yxng Bane
East London-born rapper Yxng Bane specializes in dancehall-infused R&B, but doesn't shy away from blending genres from across the board. Bane first appeared online in 2015, when he began uploading tracks to SoundCloud; the play counts quickly rose, giving him a platform to make music videos. At first, Bane was reluctant to reveal his identity, choosing to hide his face behind a mask. However, the mask was eventually removed, revealing his face to the public for the first time in the video for "Lone Wolf/Pronto," which saw release in the run-up to his debut EP, 2016's Full Moon. The following year, Bane geared up for the release of his next project, Bane of My Existence (aka B.O.E.), leading with the single "Fine Wine" in collaboration with Kojo Funds. 2018 proved to be a banner year for Bane with numerous collaborations including his feature on the Banx & Ranx and Ella Eyre hit "Answerphone" and the release of Any Minute Now, a collaborative full-length with D-Block Europe. He capped on his impressive year with his own mixtape, HBK. - Apple Music
