Times are very different to the mass sales of the 90's and early 00's though. However I do agree sales for the 1D guys have been lower than expected. Although I think in Niall's case he was a background member of the band rather than Liam, Zayn and Harry and therefore I think he's done well

For Niall, by large i think his first solo era was much more successful than many expected considering he wasn't always at the forefront of the band or had lead vocal on any of their major hits.
