I am going to listen to that chart! Thanks for the link! biggrin.gif

The amount of variety in the top 10 is fantastic. Everything from cheesy ballads from Celine Dion to rock from Oasis to hi-tempo dance from Rednex.

The Oasis song sounds great...not one of the ones I know the best from them though!

Another Night and Let Me Be Your Fantasy are the highlights of the top 20 for me though!

Also, what was to become a big hit in the new year from Strike with 'U Sure Do' in the low top 40 I see. Fab house tune!

Back to Christmas 1990 now and the last time that Sir Cliff made it to Xmas #1 (although he did come close again in 1999 as seen earlier in this thread)

This is for the chart published on 23 December 1990 which is of course exactly 27 years ago. Mark Goodier was presenting the chart back then on BBC Radio 1 which you can hear here: https://www.mixcloud.com/1869300/uk-top-40-...ier-23-12-1990/
(It was a 2hr show in those days)

So Cliff at #1 (though he only lasted 1 week there), with bookies favourite Vanilla Ice deposed at the last minute. Jumping into the Top 10 was the Grease MegaMix, but at #4 was to be a future chart topper from Enigma. I think my favourites in the Top 10 are The Farm and EMF but great to see a future hit from Seal (Crazy at 15) and La's just about hanging on to the bottom rung of the chart at #75 with There She Goes. Oh and finally, at number 11... Women like three things: Men in kilts, Southern Comfort, and Chris Isaac's 'Wicked Game'. tongue.gif

Christmas 1992

Chart published 20 December 1992 - listen to it here: https://www.mixcloud.com/1869300/uk-top-40-...kes-20-12-1992/

Whitney Houston scores an easy 4th week at #1 but Take That (who were turned down by Simon Cowell) score their first Top 5 hit and Simon Cowell's most successful project to-date (having reached #14 the previous Christmas with The UK Mixmasters) 'WWF Superstars' falls from 4-6. Also worthy of note is Darlene Love at 34 who Michael always 'bangs on about' and my favourite tracks here from Stereo MCs and The Prodigy (albeit not very festive!)

That Snap! song looks like a Christmas song in terms of title but isn't definitely isn't lyrically, its a rap/dance love song. ohmy.gif

Don't know a big lot of tracks in the top 40 but the Cliff song I do know and is good but it isn't an often played Christmas song any more.

My favourite in the top 10 is The Farm - All Together Now, such an anthemic and very 90s song which I have really liked from pretty much when i first heard it many years ago. I thought it was from a few years later in the 90s tbh than 1990 as it does sound a bit ahead of its time.

Lower down the top 40 in the 1990 Christmas chart, George Michael - Freedom is fab too. I like Yazoo - Situation too, looking it up I think the 1990 release was an updated more acid house style remix of the 1982 original.

Thanks for posting the link Dr Blind to the original Radio 1 chart and I will listen to it soon. I love listening to the retro radio shows that have been put up online, especially from the 80s and 90s!

QUOTE(dancember @ Dec 1 2017, 09:37 AM) *
In the run-up to Christmas I will be posting Charts of the Christmas Past and giving my thoughts.

Day 1: 1999

Now this is quite a poor year for the big chart contenders. On one end we have two awful cover versions from Westlife, who already had three chart toppers that year and were aiming for a fourth one. The other, Cliff Richard with his dreadful Christmas/New Year single which had been number one for three weeks previous. In the end though it was the lesser of two evils as 'I Have A Dream/Seasons In The Sun' became the fourth number one for Westlife and their first Christmas number one.

At number three a re-issue for 'Imagine' by John Lennon which was previously #1 following his death in 1980. I'm not sure why it was re-issued but it may have had something to do with the end of the millennium. At least that is probably the reason for Europe's appearance at #39 with 'The Final Countdown' and Prince's appearance at #51 with '1999'. Whatever it was, it is my favourite song in the top five with its lyrics still resonating today.

Also worth noting are the two novelty entries in the chart, 'Cognoscenti Vs Intelligentsia' at #4 for Cuban Boys which is more well known as being the 'hamster dance' song, an early example of a viral internet sensation. And at #8 a Christmas classic (not really) 'Mr. Hankey The Christmas Poo'. Yes people actually bought a single by an animated singing poo. The song originated on one of my favourite TV shows 'South Park' back in its infancy.

Two childhood fave groups in S Club 7 and Steps enter at #5 and #7, both with double A-sides which seemed to be quite popular back then especially for pop acts. The only song I actually remember from this lot though is 'Better The Devil You Know', which Kylie does better anyway.

And lastly a shout out to garage classic 'A Little Bit Of Luck' entering at #18 for DJ Luck & MC Neat which would climb in the new year to #9. And another dance song, though less remembered, at #21 for Perfect Phase with 'Horny Horns'.

1 - NEW - 01 - Westlife - I HAVE A DREAM / SEASONS IN THE SUN 213k

QUOTE(dancember @ Dec 5 2017, 06:53 PM) *
Day 5: 2003

In one of the closest races for Christmas number one in history Michael Andrews famously held off The Darkness to claim #1 with 'Mad World', featuring vocalist Gary Jules. Neither would have a second hit. The Darkness had to settle for their second #2 hit following 'I Believe...' and they would never reach any higher in their career. It is a shame that their 'Christmas Time' just missed out this week as it would have been one of the rare occasions of an actual Christmas song getting the title, and it is a great original song that gets a few plays from me every Christmas anyway, and it seems to be remembered well as it re-entered the official top 100 last year. 'Mad World' is a great song too so I can't be too annoyed with it claiming #1 in the end, I like the dark and chilling feels of the production which suit the lyrics far better than the original Tears For Fears version in my opinion. In any case we can at least all be thankful that Ozzy and Kelly Osbourne fell from #1 this week with 'Changes'. That would've been a non eventful Christmas #1.

Quite a few challengers for the top were released this week. Bo Selecta with their completely unfunny 'Proper Crimbo' enters at #4, perhaps I needed to be there at the time. Also to make it three of five Christmas songs in the top five, the year's Pop Idol finalists cover of Lennon's 'Happy Xmas' enters at #5, which was seen as a major disappointment. Unsurprisingly it is a long way off the quality of the original, though I presume it was a charity release, so #5 seems right for it.

In the battle of the girlbands Atomic Kitten won over Sugababes with their 'Ladies Night' cover at #8 against 'Too Lost In You' at #10 (which I think could've been a top five hit if the release were timed better, as it seems to be one of their most fondly remembered songs). They both beat boyband of the moment Blue who enter at #11 with 'Signed, Sealed, Delivered', their first top 10 miss and a clear sign that they were on their last legs.

Ultrabeat followed big #2 hit 'Pretty Green Eyes' with 'Feelin Fine' which in this competitive week could only make #12, though it had good longevity. Some more festive entries lower down include one-trick ponies Fast Food Rockers who were clearly desperate to rake as much money as possible in before the novelty had worn off. 'I Love Christmas' is awful as you'd expect and not in the fun way that their previous two hits were. They never made the charts again and are probably all working in an actual fast food joint now. Look out for them at your local Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken, or maybe McDonalds.

At #26 is Billy Mack (better known as actor Bill Nighy) with a cover of 'Love Is All Around' for the film 'Love Actually', except it's retitled 'Christmas Is All Around', and that's basically the joke. The film was very popular but that didn't translate to the singles chart for this song, which is probably for the best. Also entering lower down are G-Unit at #29 and Erin Rocha at #36 both with non-seasonal songs.

Re-reading this, ooh that 1999 chart was awful on the whole ohmy.gif I remember at the time I started slagging off the charts for the first time ever! laugh.gif The top 10 is especially bad, bar Lennon and Orbit!

I didn't add: The John Lennon CD had 3 tracks on it, a sort of mini-greatest hits - Happy Xmas War Is Over and Give Peace A Chance were the others. That's why it was selling so well for the millennium (peace-themed) and also Christmas themed.

The Europe single was a remix for the actual final countdown to 2000, Prince was always going to be 1999 back again.

That's right, still holds the record for longest run at #1 in Ireland I think.

Celine Dion (down 1 to #6 with “Think Twice”) was on her 11th chart week, but it would be yet another 5 weeks before she claimed her first #1 single. The first not to be available on vinyl, and track 2 on the CD single was “The Power Of Love” which was the record that she tied with for 'slowest continuous climb to #1' of 16 weeks, until that record was beaten by Ed Sheeran and “Thinking Out Loud” (19 weeks).

I usually listen to old 70's original charts, Tom Browne mainly, as there's a Facebook group and they post links to them on Mixcloud but am a bit fed up with the same ones every year so branching out a bit now in to the 80's, 90's and noughties.

Yes was thinking that am sure Celine hits No.1 in early Feb.1995. Rednex go to No.1 after Christmas too IIRC.

Another Night by Whigfield sounds just like Saturday Night. rolleyes.gif

Why we're Take My Breath Away and Time of my Life in this this chart??

I'm going to have an educated guess now and say that Top Gun and Dirty Dancing were either out on video or on TV for the first time.

The Darkness song is a load of overblown nonsense, but that it its appeal. That made it part of a decent top two, The only other song of merit in the top ten is form Will Young. The version of John Lennon's festive classic was diabolical.

I never liked the Darkness song. I actually liked the Osbourne's song Changes.
