There is no stopping Ed Sheeran at the moment, he could be set for another 6 weeks or more at #1 and at #2 drama.gif New entries from the Chainsmokers with 'Paris', Nathan Sykes with 'There's Only One Of You', and Halsey with the theme tune to the new Fifty Shades Darker movie titled 'Not Afraid Anymore'. 'On Hold' by The xx might just filter through, with the album release the track should do well.

After 5 weeks at the top with a break in between, Little Mix are in danger of losing the top spot to The xx who are looking to bag the #1 album this week with 'I See You' also album releases for Wiley, Bonobo, The Flaming Lips and Rick Wakeman

I'm bored of Ed domination already and it's only just begun laugh.gif sad.gif

Haven't wanted an album to be #1 this much in ages so g'won The xx!

Posted by: ankietarrr Jan 16 2017, 02:36 AM

Chainsmokers song will be no way successful.

They release songs similar to 'Closer' all the time and one song has already flopped. This song will be even bigger flop as they repeat themselves

Somehow I think you're wrong about this.

Posted by: Mart!n Jan 16 2017, 03:13 PM

I should imagine Ed Sheeran has dropped a fair bit in sales, nothing yet for today, OCC and Radio 1 will reveal all later. It be interesting to see his sales for comparison from last week.

Posted by: pippa Jan 16 2017, 03:26 PM

While a big drop is inevitable i would not be surprised if Ed Sheeran manages 100,000+ at number 1 again this week.

Posted by: cqmerqn Jan 16 2017, 03:28 PM

Both Ed tracks should manage 100K+

Shape of You is on 57k but Castle is on 42k, so I'd say the latter might fall just short.

Posted by: Steve201 Jan 16 2017, 05:08 PM

Shape of You should still manage 130k which is good - the first week will always be huge but the length of time at no1 should still be long enough as his sales will be steady as we have witnessed a lot during the streaming era!

Paris sounds absolutely nothing like Closer, it's totally different in nearly every way :,)

(and it's looking good for a top 10 debut, so yes - flop!1)

I'm sure this has been answered before. But why are some movie soundtracks getting counted on the artist album chart?

Posted by: Mart!n Jan 16 2017, 05:50 PM

Rag'N'Bone Man could have had a second week at #1 if it wasn't for Ed Sheeran drama.gif

Great to see The xx at #1 with great sales, the album is a jem wub.gif

Posted by: liamk97 Jan 16 2017, 05:55 PM

Oops at You Me At Six almost out the Top 40!

Objectively, 17k so far in January is good, but I expected more from The xx. Doesn't seem likely that they'll break the 30k mark, despite their previous album selling double that.

I actually expected The xx to be selling a bit more. I expected a minimum of 30k for Friday. Really glad they're getting the #1 though.

Posted by: Hadji Jan 16 2017, 05:58 PM

Nice to see the Snapchat filter song heading for top 40. Let's hope it remains there on Friday. I still think Ed shouldn't have released both songs at the same time because I can see SOY refusing COTH a chance at the top

Posted by: Mart!n Jan 16 2017, 06:25 PM

I think we could be seeing Castle on the Hill breaking away from the top 2 quite easily, probably in week 4, Shape of You could be taken on by a different act in its 4th or 5th week if SOY sales start diminishing, more likely in its 5th week, with a BRITs performance he could hang on though. I do think SOY is the dominant single of the two.

Sohn had a Top 40 album in April 2014 and now he's unlikely to make the Top 75 in January 2017. Where'd his fans go?

Posted by: SKOB Jan 16 2017, 06:55 PM

Amazing for Bonobo

Posted by: girl_from_oz Jan 16 2017, 07:18 PM

3 movie soundtracks in the top 20 and if it's counted towards the artist charts I expect The Sing soundtrack also to chart beginning of Feb

Posted by: ___∆___ Jan 16 2017, 07:44 PM

Yes at The XX - sales will be well down on the opening week of their last album which shifted 58k but this album is SO much stronger so hopefully it will hang around for a while. Pleased to see 'On Hold' back in the Top 40 too.

Posted by: Bré Jan 16 2017, 08:57 PM

Those sales for The xx definitely feel a bit underwhelming, I thought there was quite a bit of hype around their return! At least it's still looking like safely being #1.

Posted by: Bjork Jan 16 2017, 09:03 PM

Was also expecting more from The XX :/

Posted by: RoosterSeize Jan 16 2017, 09:11 PM

The xx coming for another #1 <3 also VERY impressive for Bonobo ohmy.gif

All soundtracks counting in the albums chart now? i expect the 'La La Land' album will take over at #1 next week since there's barely anything out

La La Land is a cast recording so it would always have counted to the artist chart, and anyway it was T100 last week so we already knew it.
I still don't get why Trolls is in there though.

I think Coexist has hampered sales for this - there was a lot of hype for the 2nd album and whilst it was good it wasn't a patch on the 1st. Really hope the new album has some legs and sells well as I literally can't stop playing - amazing return to form.

That explains it. In that case, the Frozen OST should have counted into the albums chart. Because the 50 Shades Darker OST isn't a recording from the cast, it will count into the compilations chart

I agree that "Coexist" was not as good as their Debut Album but there has been 4 and a half years since "Coexist" and in the interim Jamie XX released an excellent critically acclaimed Album.
Also "On Hold" is on the verge of becoming their highest charted Single (it will do it stays at 33 or improves on that). This era is definitely shaping up well and with a number 2 position on US iTunes for the Album their star is still on the rise!

Posted by: girl_from_oz Jan 17 2017, 06:40 PM

I am wondering if the Sing soundtrack will count towards the artist charts, I'm guessing not because out of the 23 tracks on the album, 5 are old tracks, the rest are cast members I think

Human outsold it by ~400 copies yesterday so probably not at this rate, don't think it can make up the gap in 3 days!

Posted by: Danuary Jan 17 2017, 10:38 PM

Migos - Bad and Boujee is at #41, less than 200 units from the top 40. If it keeps gaining sales during the week it could go top 40.

Posted by: Steve201 Jan 17 2017, 10:49 PM

XX on course to sell 25k or so - it's streaming figures should be good. Great to see Wiley in the top 10 too - another good release!

Both Eds should be over 100k but after that Human will struggle for 40k which is poorish.

Hope On Hold can stay top 40 and with it in the top 50 on Spotify it could continue to rise!

It be great if Sam Smith dropped a new track out of nowhere, perfect opportunity... that might just shift Ed Sheeran from the top. laugh.gif

It would have to be week 3 or 4 at earliest but would he go Adele/sheeran or duffy

I can see Sam Smith doing an Emeli Sandé.

Posted by: Danuary Jan 18 2017, 12:29 PM

I think radio will give Sam Smith more of a chance than they did with Emeli, and there'll be more hype surrounding his comeback.

Posted by: Davidson Jan 18 2017, 01:19 PM

I can't see Sam's second era being as huge as his first but I don't think he's going to see an Emeli-sized decline.

After all he was a huge name globally, smashing in America, something Emeli/Duffy never achieved. They were just huge local stars for one era.

Posted by: Tinasha Jan 18 2017, 01:43 PM

I defiantely think Sam Smith would already struggle to hit the highs he was at the end of his era. I doubt he'd manage a #1 debut even. It's funny because even when Ed wasn't doing anything it felt like he was still in demand, whereas with Sam I can already feel interest is waning.

Maybe that’ll be true of Jess Glynne next time too then?

I can’t see Sam Smith returning any time soon, from what I’ve seen he has a lot of really bad personal problems at the moment.

Butt didn't Hurts got good airplay? That cannot be an excuse for the lack of success

also curious what happens with George Ezra, if he can repeat the success of Budapest/Wanted on Voyage

think Sam Smith will struggle, after his Bond song, he re-released the album and did nothing, there were new tracks on the reissue and those did nothing, there was no interest at all

Ed Sheeran re-issued x and it didn't really make much of an impact with the new songs either, it's difficult when none of those tracks actually got pushed as a single, so I don't think re-issues can really be used to compare. Nevertheless, I agree that Sam could well struggle, really depends on how long he leaves it and how strong the comeback single is.

Posted by: pippa Jan 18 2017, 02:36 PM

Sam Smith's re-release sold over 300,000 in its own merit so i would not call it a flop, likewise with Ed Sheeran except the figures are 100,000 higher to my understanding.

That said, i have always felt Sam Smith is one era smash only and will likely struggle with the second era similarly to Emeli Sande who i thought would be fly her second era with ease, so maybe im wrong about Sam. Jess Glynne is another i strongly feel will struggle in her second era.

Posted by: Jonjo Jan 18 2017, 02:53 PM

Jess Glynne will not struggle if she comes back soon, I don't think. Any longer than Summer this year, I reckon she'll be done for, unless she retries the feature of someone's single (maybe Calvin this time?) and releases on the back of that formula? That could work for her. Sam at worst will "do an Emeli". No way will his success be as bad as Duffy's 2nd era. But yeah I can see him having a big enough era for people to think he's cared about enough (def not to the success of his debut era though).

Ed's re-release was more attractive because of the concert DVD, arguably. It was surprising that he didn't push any of the new tracks as a single (unless you count Lay It All On Me), but then none of them were particularly single worthy.

Isn't 7,008 sales currently for #6 album by Pete Tong? Bonobo's current sales are 7,562 according to Music Week. tongue.gif

Fixed.

I thought Bad & Boujee would have entered today if it was at #41 on yesterday's update

Posted by: Mart!n Jan 18 2017, 07:36 PM

Looks like Shape of You is doing around 16k (ish) per day, could be looking at 128k (ish), or just under for the week, if you take 16k as the stepping stone, while Castle on the Hill is doing around 12k (ish) per day that's probably on target for 93k to 95k (ish) for the week. Hopefully I'm near the target on both tongue.gif

Except you need to account for the missing day of streaming sales!

Comparing week-for-week sales “Shape Of You” is down approximately 45% on last week's total (to COP Tuesday) and is therefore on for about 125K. “Castle On The Hill” posting a 55% decline and therefore on for ~89K.

Sadly that doesn't seem to be the case, although at the rate Justin Trollberlake is falling I reckon Migos will end up being this week's #40.

Hope On Hold has done enough to repeak this week!

Posted by: Lenny Jan 18 2017, 10:29 PM

I can see Sam Smith doing another 'La La La' or 'Latch' style feature then launching his new album with a big lead single.
I can see Jess Glynne doing another 'Rather Be' or 'My Love' style feature then launching her new album with a big lead single.

I don't see their success diminishing so dramatically. Album number 3 will be more telling.

Posted by: mdh Jan 19 2017, 12:12 AM

Tbh I bet Jess will be on Clean Bandit's album, and that'll the their fourth single after the Zara collab, setting Jess up to debut her lead solo single for her 2nd album in the autumn.

Surprised (But pleased) to see the Vamps climbing 2 from Monday's update to #30 - they are out of the Top 60 on iTunes so are being propped up by streaming.

It's more Cheryl and Rita Ora that I think will suffer in the current chart climate (though I guess the latter already did with Body On Me). If they ever get around to releasing something new.
