BuzzJack Music Forum _ Britney Spears _ Opinions On: "Me Against The Music"

So what did you guys think of this song and the video? Were you impressed, disappointed, indifferent? Did you expect the song to perform better on the charts or were you satisfied? Was it the best choice for the first single from ITZ?

Posted by: Nick F1 9th November 2014, 02:33 PM

Damn that video, THE killer, no one could have danced like Britney from those days (bye Janet)

But seriously, in today's scene, there's no one who could match Britney's dancing skills.

The song is decent, could have been better imo. The Rishi remix is flawless.

Poor Janet laugh.gif I still bop to Just A Little While, didnt deserve to bomb imo.

I agree, the song isn't great, but the beat is fab and I think its a good introduction to ITZ. Deserved to better in the US, but when the charts at the time were dominated by R&B there wasn't much it could do.

Where did that come from? laugh.gif I loved that track back in 2004, really deserved to do so much better.

As for MATM, I really liked it at the time, not one I'd choose to listen to now really.

Amazing Amazing Amazing. The song that turned me into a HARDCORE STAN (I was only a basic fan until then).

I loved it so f***ing much and I had zero pocket money back then so I actually asked someone to buy me the single for Christmas. I was so hungry for new amazing music. When they eventually bought me the entire album, I locked myself in my room for days and only listened to the album. I think I ended up losing a few pounds, too. So, THANK YOU Me Against the Music.

It came out around the time ITZ was out, so we would have to compare This Britney to That Janet I suppose wink.gif

Fabulous package. Britters and Madge work well together, the song is amazing and the video is perfect for the song as well. One of the most memorable music events of my adolescence.

i dislike it a lot, always tried to like it but it just won't happen, still not as bad as the hideousness that is 'slave' sick2.gif

It's official. f*** off.

Didn't have you down as a 'Slave' hater, Jake! Most unimpressed. Been listening to it a lot recently and pretty sure it's my favourite.
As for 'Me Against the Music', I've always thought there was something missing. The Kanye West remix is so good though.

Posted by: ░░░░ 10th November 2014, 01:49 PM

oh yes, from day one i couldn't stand it.

Would you guys have released MATM as the first single from ITZ?

Posted by: ▲Rob▲ 10th November 2014, 08:52 PM

Good song, video is ok. Can't stand Madonna. tongue.gif

Yes.

I still think it was an amazing introduction to the era, especially after the VMA performance.

People talk about its lack luster performance as a single in America, yet she was still coming off from being shunned by Clear Channel radio. And at the time she was all album sales instead of being a singles artist. It still opened with sales close to 700k and Toxic served its purpose of what made the album sell consistently over the next year, along with Everytime.

Posted by: Tyler~ 10th November 2014, 09:34 PM

It was either Outrageous (what Jive wanted) or MATM (Britneys choice).

Toxic wasn't even in the running as a singles choice until Britney demanded it.

Posted by: -Jay- 10th November 2014, 09:47 PM

I wouldn't change the first 3 singles and their order. I wish she could have extended that era further though. sad.gif

Posted by: Euphorique 10th November 2014, 09:47 PM

Radio was too urban back then for a pop song to do really well. Outrageous might've performed better in the singles chart thanks to airplay, but I think it wouldnt make the album sell nearly as much because at the end of the day, people prefer Britney doing pop. I'm so glad that awful era for the Hot 100 is over tbh

Posted by: Tyler~ 10th November 2014, 09:52 PM

If Jive got their wish 'Outrageous' and '(I Got That) Boom Boom' would have been the first two singles.

Posted by: Euphorique 10th November 2014, 09:54 PM

I Got That Boom Boom would've done much better than Outrageous as a lead single. Clearly the record label wanted Outrageous to be released which is why it became the 4th single, but if they wanted an urban single I feel Boom Boom or The Hook Up were much better songs

Posted by: Heezus Froot 10th November 2014, 10:02 PM

I remember they were planning to release Breathe on Me as the 5th single. I wish they had. sad.gif

Posted by: Tyler~ 10th November 2014, 10:02 PM

I think 'Boom Boom' would have been a great fourth single, with 'Breathe On Me' being a fantastic closing single.

Posted by: Euphorique 10th November 2014, 10:03 PM

My ITZ era:

- MATM
- Toxic
- Everytime
- The Hook Up (or Boom Boom) for an urban leaning single
- Breathe On Me (the standout song on ITZ for many fans)

Damn that knee injury sad.gif

For me it's a pretty rubbish song, but that is the case with a lot of these big name collaborations I find. The video is great though.

I always reference this parody whenever the topic is brought up, which for me makes the whole thing worthwhile and is probably my favourite parody ever:

I love that parody.

I always wonder if BOM would have done well commercially, especially in 2004.

MATM IS FLAWLESS. PERIOD.
great 1st single and ITZ album opener.
Can't see any other ITZ track as the first single, and that is STILL for me, the best Britney album to date.

I'm not sure, it would've been edgy for 2004 standards with that dance beat. But then I feel it would be a great final single and a good representative of the album's variety. Heck songs like "Early Mornin'", "The Hook Up" or "Showdown" wouldn't have fit it in any of her other albums, ITZ is just very eclectic.
