BuzzJack Music Forum _ Pop _ Mariah Carey - All I Want for Christmas Is You

Posted by: Jay ☆ 31st October 2019, 03:15 AM

If mods would be happier with this topic being in R&B, that's ok! I thought it would be a nice idea to have a general topic for this iconic song.

2019 marks 25 years since Mariah released her tremendously successful Christmas single 'All I Want for Christmas Is You'! heart.gif

It appears that Mariah is aiming for the song to finally reach #1 in the US, with the help of some brand new physical singles! It's being released on CD, red cassette, green cassette, 7" vinyl and 12" vinyl, with a shipping date of 20th December. This will coincide with the chart week that Mariah would be most likely be able to climb to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. If anyone is interested in ordering them, they're available here: https://mariahcareyshop.com/collections/featured-items It would be incredible if it manages to reach #1 there (prior to now its best position was #3, achieved last year). It would also become her 19th #1 hit overall. Fingers crossed! *.*

In the UK, chart fans will know that the single has stalled at #2 in three different years. cry.gif 1994: East 17 - Stay Another Day / 2017: Ed Sheeran - Perfect / 2018: Ava Max - Sweet But Psycho (she outsold Mariah by just 152 sales cry.gif ). Could this year be the year Mariah manages #1? Physicals are also being released here, but only the 7" vinyl & green cassette: https://mariahcareyshopuk.com/

Mariah is the new face of Walkers Crisps this year! *.* It seems that TV adverts will begin airing from November 2nd, and her face will appear on packets. Iconic!!

Her face is on the packets when Spice Girls weren't earlier this year?!?!? nono.gif nono.gif nono.gif

Pre-ordered the 7” and cassette from the UK website - I’m here for a Christmas Mariah #1 in 2019 cheer.gif The Walkers promo and ads should help massively with streaming, the record company could request it being reset as a new release to get the sales if they are releasing new physicals?!

Posted by: Steve201 31st October 2019, 06:10 PM

Hope the can be a December no1 this year!

Posted by: pippa 31st October 2019, 06:21 PM

The physicals are an excellent idea and Mariah should promote where possible in both the US and UK as combined, it could help the song to finally go Number 1 which would be richly deserved.
With the George Michael Bio out this year, it could put Last Christmas with the advantage for Wham.
Maybe both could have a week at Number 1 but I would greatly welcome Mariah more to do it.
Mariah was completely robbed of Number 1 last year.

Posted by: danG 31st October 2019, 06:36 PM

This year is her best chance yet to go #1, as long as we don't get a big December release from Adele or Ed Sheeran I think she should do it.

She'll have huge streams from Fri 20th to Wed 25th, then Thursday's will be estimated (I suspect they'll be using previous year's Boxing Day trends, but last year she was still as high as #4 on Spotify then).

Of course there's the possibility that Wham could do it as well but that would also be a great result.

Posted by: pippa 31st October 2019, 06:53 PM

The physicial could help add a few thousand in that all crucial week.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 31st October 2019, 09:38 PM

Great news il def be supporting my fave christmas song where I can.

Posted by: dobbo 31st October 2019, 09:56 PM

So is she definitely NOT gonna be on ACR this year then? Seems like a very solid shout then although she wasn't on ACR in 2017 either but the days line up better this time.

When are the physicals out in the UK? The Christmas #1 will be revealed on the 20th this year

She will be unless someone on team Mariah goes out of their way for it to not be. I reckon it'll get the #1 this year regardless though and it'll have plenty more chances to go to #1 again in future years unless the OCC really go nuclear against Christmas songs for whatever reason.

I might get the CD single for the extended dance mix.

Oddly the UK store doesn't say when they're being sent out, but it wouldn't surprise me if they're dispatched on 20th December here too! Mariah's best chance for #1 is the week after Christmas #1. As Dan mentions, her streams will be at their strongest during that week:

This year really presents a strong opportunity for the song to get to Number 1.
This could add real excitement to the Christmas chart, or the week following it.

Posted by: BillyH 1st November 2019, 03:04 PM

It seems bizarre to think that I don't remember hearing this song at all until about 1999-2000 - it was big the year it was released (when I was slightly too young to be following chart music), but for most of the 1990s the kings of the Christmas songs were very much Slade and Wizzard, as they had been 20 years earlier. When it became the first song I downloaded on mp3 back in 2002, it still felt like an obscure forgotten classic that you'd only occasionally see on the odd music channel if they were having a festive marathon.

I feel like 'Love Actually' (released November 2003) followed by the download boom was what got this very much onto the A-list, eventually ruling above everything by the end of that decade and into the next. Similar to how Fairytale of New York seemed to gain a lot more attention following two events - Kirsty MacColl's sad death in 2000, and the high-profile physical reissue of the song in 2005 which reached #3.

Posted by: JosephStyles 1st November 2019, 03:05 PM

This is and probably always will be THE Christmas song for me. It's the only one of the usual classics I'll actively listen to because it simply brings me so much joy every single time. I'm giving it my first play of the year as I type this post, it's Mariah season for the next 2 months now *.*

The gap of 152 sales last year still makes me feel sad, so I'm PRAYING this is the year that Mariah claims her rightful #1!!

Posted by: pippa 1st November 2019, 07:33 PM

It is always the Christmas song i enjoy the most, it has everything that is needed for the classic Christmas hit and none of the other songs come close to it.
There are others i enjoy, but, not to the same level as the joyful All I Want For Christmas Is You.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 1st November 2019, 09:20 PM

It's a real feel good christmas song.

Posted by: Bloodjerdling 1st November 2019, 09:24 PM

Tempted to get a vinyl as I don't have any Christmas music in my collection and I'd enjoy seeing this re-peak a whole 25 years later *.*

This is how I remember it too! Like you, I was too young when it came out (I was 6 and paid no attention to celebrities/music/charts), so it passed me by that year. I don't really have any recollection of hearing it throughout the 90s either! I can't remember when I first heard it, but it must have been in advance of Love Actually because I remember knowing the song when I saw that movie. I agree that its inclusion in Love Actually seemed to be a turning point in the song being regarded as something of a classic!

I definitely first heard it in the late 90s, every year the video was on TOTP2. Local radio used to hammer it at Christmas too particularly in the early 00s. I also remember them playing Samantha Mumba’s woeful version. I guess it may have had more uptake from Love Actually but I didn’t notice the difference. I always liked it but I didn’t have it on any compilation until Christmas Hits in 2004. But I think I only realised how generally popular it was in 2007 when it could rechart.

I do remember us going crazy in a club the Summer before when the DJ announced that it was 6 months until Christmas and they played a mashup of this, the pogues, Slade and Wizzard which are my favourite Christmas songs.

I think it depends on age tbh, most people born early 80's and onwards will say that the song has always had a presence since it's release. When I think back to radio in the late 90s, this song as well as Fairytale of New York, Christmas Wrapping, I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday and Merry Xmas Everybody are the standouts that got heavy play. And the music video was always on MTV and The Box with the likes of East 17 and all the other classics.

People like to credit Love Actually with it's re-emergence when it's simply just down to the song being made available to purchase as an MP3. It's peaks on the download chart: #5 2004, #2 2005 and #2 2006 and had it been allowed to chart in the latter year it would have been top 10 on the official charts.

"It's very much like I live in the land of the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus," she adds wryly. "I don't acknowledge time, I don't know what it is. I rebuke it!"

The label need to request it but the main thing is a 25% surge in streams however this may not be given because it’s over 3 years old... Tbh I doubt she’ll need to come off ACR

Which isn't relevant for Mariah, the 25% rule isn't applicable to songs older than 3 years. It's meant to be on permanent ACR, but Lizzo's Good As Hell got a reset regardless thanks to its current single promotion. Mariah's label could technically apply to the OCC, but it's not going to happen otherwise.

Posted by: joyride 9th November 2019, 12:20 AM

The OCC have blocked Mariah from entering the Top 100 this week. AIWFCIY is number 57 on sales and 63 on streaming yet is nowhere to be seen. What a joke.

There is no top 200 any longer, it's top 100 or nothing.

No Guidance is #65 in the audio streaming chart, while Mariah is #81 - that alone clarifies why No Guidance is charting and Mariah is not, it has more streams even on the accelerated ratio...!

^ it will have a massive lead over everything else (except other Christmas songs which are also on ACR) in its peak week though. They do - No Guidance is #48 on video streams vs #43 for Mariah, not a significant enough difference!

Apologies for confusion - yes, the audio and video streaming charts together make up the overall streaming chart. With No Guidance at #99, it's likely Mariah's sales advantage wasn't enough to overcome it.

Another theory is that No Guidance has performed better on premium streams (from paid Spotify subscriptions as well as Apple Music, Amazon Music, Tidal, etc) than Mariah. Premium streams are weighted higher than ad-funded streams (e.g. free Spotify) and this is not reflected in the streaming chart (which is simply a ranking of the total weekly streams of each song).

The sales advantage not being enough is plausible but doubt comes in when I analyse it.

.................. Streaming .........Sales .........Chart
Shortgun ........... 58 ......... 67 ......... 87
No guidance......... 59 ......... DNC ......... 99
Shallow ........... 60 ......... 49 ......... 89
All I Want ......... 63 ......... 57 ......... DNC

AIW did better on streams and sales than WYW, yet the latter was able to chart at 100 wacko.gif Call me paranoid but I wouldn't put manipulation past them, they screwed her out of number one last year with whatever crap they invented for her Thursday streams.

Because it sets the pace for December and I know that they were furious their silly streaming rules didn't stop Xmas songs from flooding the charts last year. If they aren't giving correct data now, they certainly won't later. I'm so invested in AIW and need to see it go #1 tongue.gif cry.gif

Posted by: dobbo 9th November 2019, 06:15 PM

I agree. In fact I'm extremely surprised they didn't ban Xmas songs altogether or create a separate chart as it was clear they were fuming over the invasion last year after their futile attempt to at least cull them. Very happy this doesn't appear to be the case! For one more year at least anyway...

The charts are completely fake and Mariah was last year's no.1, ehethee rhe fake company accepts it or not

Posted by: Bré 9th November 2019, 07:32 PM

What exactly would motivate the OCC to manipulate Mariah to be outside the top 100 rather than #98 or whatever...? laugh.gif

The premium vs. free streams thing isn't a 'theory', that is the rule the OCC uses and it's why there are sometimes discrepancies between the streaming-only chart and the overall chart. 'Wish You Well' is higher on the audio streaming chart while 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' is higher on the video streaming chart (enough so that it's the higher of the two on the combined streaming chart), most video streams are from YouTube which counts as free streams and is thus weighted less heavily. It won't be a huge difference so she was likely only just short of entering the top 100.

I am half expecting the OCC to just ban outright songs older than 3 years rather than just have them on permanent ACR after we inevitably get about 30 Christmas songs in the top 40 this year. We may as well make the most of it while we can.

it’s a mixture of uk + us stores but as jay said, they’ve ‘sold out’ on the uk store.

They should issue more and get the sales as it will all help in the battle for number 1.

They will only continually be no1 on streams in the week after the Xmas chart, that'll be the interesting week. Looking forward to seeing it back in the chart tomorrow, wonder if they'll skip it this week as it's still November??

Posted by: pippa 29th November 2019, 03:17 PM

For fans of both, it would be great if both could hit the top spot this year for a week each.
It would be so great for both on their respective anniversaries.
That said, i am more for Mariah going all the way, as i am a big fan of it.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 30th November 2019, 06:21 AM

Ended up at #34 in this week's UK chart, the same position it was at this time last year!

29th November 2019:
14,360 sales - with ACR rules applied
27,565 sales - without ACR, which goes towards the song's sales total.
It sold 1,155 downloads. Therefore 13,205 sales from all audio/video streaming goes towards this week's chart // 26,410‬ sales goes to the song's total.

30th November 2018: (Comparison to 1 year ago)
12,839 sales - with ACR rules applied
23,868 sales - without ACR, which goes towards the song's sales total.
It sold 1,808 downloads. Therefore ‭11,031‬ sales from all audio/video streaming went towards that week's chart // 22,060 sales went towards the song's total.

Number 10 on iTunes now.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 1st December 2019, 11:47 PM

Great to see! It hasn't been in the UK iTunes Top 10 for years, because prior to this year the downloads were split between the version from her album, and a version from a Christmas compilation. Now that that compilation has been withdrawn from sale, that's helping the song go higher!

Also #4 on Spotify! Presumably it'll be #1 in tomorrow's Spotify chart.

I'd really like to see another Mariah song chart for the first time. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) is off to a great start this year, already #99 on Spotify!

Posted by: Steve201 2nd December 2019, 09:09 AM

I assume it's higher on playlists this year?

There's so many other versions of Christmas(Baby Please Come Home). My own favourite is by U2 and a lot of people love the Buble and Darlene Love versions.

True. When the Slade biggie was released in '73, Noddy Holder could have no idea that he'd earn over Ł100,000 every year in royalties for plays and sales. Nice pension for him.

They calculated horrible streams for Thursday.

Posted by: ChristmaSteve201 7th December 2019, 01:37 AM

As in my Spotify post the average streams of the song for the week were 370k so they probably used that total which was lower than she had been doing for most of the beginning of the week but it's the average I guess.

Posted by: Bjork 10th December 2019, 09:26 AM

but the occ people are not [REDACTED], when they estimate Thu streams, they don't just make the average
I was at a big Data Science meeting in London the other week and talked with some people about it and they do it thru a process called "machine learning"... so first you feed the model with real data, ie whats happened with all songs every week since Spotify exists, so real data for every song for every Thursday...
and then you make a model and use the data you have for a particular song you wanna predict, and the model estimates its Thu streams... but it's based on lots and lots of real data and the model learns from this data and then makes. prediction...

there was an example called "would you have survived in the Titanic?"... its there same machine learning, so first you put the data of everyone that was on there titanic, age, sex, class etc and if they survived/died... and then you put your real data, I'm a man, 30, I'm poor so I'd go on 3rd class, and then the model tells you... "you'd have died" smile.gif so the model learns from the data you entered and makes a prediction based on that

It actually wasn't eligible in the US when it was originally released because they didn't put out a cd single. Had they done that it might've gone to #1 in 1994.

Posted by: Michael Bubré 16th December 2019, 06:41 PM

I think there have been periods of time where Billboard actually entirely banned Christmas songs from charting at all as well? Not sure if Mariah fell under that. It was definitely blocked for a while from making annual reappearances in the digital/streaming era until a few years ago.

Well done to her for achieving this, it's a good consolation for her losing her (joint) record for the longest running Hot 100 #1 laugh.gif her 19th #1 after Lil Nas X beat her record by spending 19 weeks at #1 in 2019. Spooky ~

Spooky ~

Pretty ridiculous if that's the case in terms of Xmas songs being banned, what's that chart actually for?

I bet he was so close with Millennium Prayer!

Posted by: ChristmaSteve201 16th December 2019, 09:09 PM

I wouldn't have considered that a true noughties no1 as it was a leftover from the 1990s. His only other chart topper in the 90s was in December 1990 with Saviours Day I think?

Posted by: pippa 16th December 2019, 10:19 PM

Saviours Day i do enjoy and more so than Mistletoe and Wine.
I did not enjoy Millenium Prayer.

Posted by: ChristmaSteve201 17th December 2019, 12:34 AM

Yeh I always considered MP a new year song rather than Christmas anyway. It was clearly aimed at the end of century kind of vibe.

Posted by: Bjork 17th December 2019, 08:10 AM

in the US, xmas songs had a separate chart for ages, this is only the 2nd Xmas song ever to get to #1 and the previous #1 was in the 50s I think

from Billboard:

Upon its initial release, on Carey's album Merry Christmas (released on Nov. 1, 1994, coincidentally, the 100th anniversary of the first Billboard magazine, dated Nov. 1, 1894), the song was not a commercially-available single and, per rules at the time, was ineligible to chart on the Hot 100; it did reach No. 12 on the Radio Songs chart that season. In December 1998, album cuts became eligible for the Hot 100 and "Christmas" dented the chart for the first time on Jan. 8, 2000, spending a week at No. 83.

Beginning in 2012, and coinciding with the addition of streaming to the Hot 100's formula, the song has hit the Hot 100 annually, as, per current rules, older songs are eligible to debut or return if ranking in the top 50 and are gaining in multiple metrics with a significant reason for their resurgences.

Wow that's amazing that she has done that, well done Mariah! Are her and Madonna the only females to have #1 singles across 3 consecutive decades in America? If it goes to #1 in the UK next week she will have done in the UK too technically right?

How many females have featured on #1s across 3 different decades in the UK?

Madonnna (80's, 90's, 00's)
Kylie (80's, 90's, 00's)
Diana Ross (60's 70's 80's)
Cher (60's, 80's, 90's)
Britney (90's 00's 10's)
Melanie C (90's, 00's, 10's) - tenuous link lol

Was she streamed more though if AIWFCIY video streams weren't accounted for? thinking.gif

Posted by: ChRiMbO LeG PiPe 27th December 2019, 10:54 PM

The OCC cheated this time by halving Mariah's video sales by splitting it into two ans attributing more than half to a made-up artist/ entry!!!!!

Posted by: ChristmaSteve201 27th December 2019, 10:55 PM

What have they said about that?

Posted by: Jay ☆ 28th December 2019, 02:09 AM

I'm so disappointed... sad.gif This year felt like the perfect time for it to finally happen. AIWFCIY finally outdid all "normal song" competition very emphatically (Stormzy), but now she ended up losing out to Alexa... I mean, Ellie Goulding. dry.gif

I've lost all faith that AIWFCIY will ever make it to UK #1 in the future. cry.gif I really wish it had done it in 2018... the sales margin between her and Ava being 152 sales will always be irritating.

Maybe it was a bit of a mistake on the label's part to not release the CD single here. I feel like that could have encouraged more casual sales than the rather expensive 7" Vinyl and Cassette formats. Physicals should have been made available on Amazon etc too, rather than be a store exclusive, like Wham's 7". I don't think the Mariah UK store was promoted very well tbh; the main focus on buying merchandise was directed to her US store.

Sigh... at least it made it to #1 in the US, which in the grand scheme of things must mean more to Mariah and the label. #1 in Germany is lovely to see too! It just would have been the icing on the cake to do it here in the UK.

Oh well. Regardless, Mariah is always going to have the ultimate modern Christmas song.

Posted by: ChRiMbO LeG PiPe 28th December 2019, 02:13 AM

And it IS no.1. It is the most consumed no.1. The OCC is corrupt snd disgusting and has a vendetta against her. That amazon song needed to be remoced from the charts weeks ago, but no. They wanted this. They PURPOSEFULLY split her video sales, and they apparently rejected their requests to reset it baxk to SCR. Let's also remember that the ENTIRE ACR RULE was put into place, with the 3 year rule lol, to defeat Mariah. They HATE the song. And it is vile. The charts should be a reflection, ans not say what those dithering oldies at the OCC want it to say. Charts are cancelled.

Posted by: ChristmaSteve201 28th December 2019, 02:19 AM

I don't think they hate the song, imo they would rather it was a new song at no1 not a song 25 years old.

Is there evidence the OCC rejected the labels asking for AIWFCIY to return to SCR?

I have no evidence to provide, so it's essentially hearsay... but apparently it is the case that Columbia requested it, but were ultimately rejected. It's info that comes from someone in the industry, who told a friend, who told a friend... so it's something to either believe or not believe. I personally think it's true. Mariah's team were clearly focused on a UK push with new physicals / the Walkers advert promo etc.

~

It's inaccurate to say Ellie was streamed more! The total audio streams of River this week were 55% of what All I Want for Christmas Is You achieved. But after AIWFCIY has its streaming sales halved, it loses out to River.

I find it totally suspicious that River with just Amazon could even achieve as much as 55% of AIWFCIY streams, which is obviously available on every streaming platform.

The whole requesting thing is ridiculous. It should be automatically reset when there is very clear promotional info released (i.e. physicals, a new video, even a Walkers advert + all this done to tie in with the 25th Anniversary)...

Also the whole "maybe they want a new song at #1 and not a 25 year old song" is bull, when they were happily reporting the fact she reached number 1 in the US finally and asking if it could do the same over here etc.. Had she been number 1 it would/could have created more traffic for their site and had people talking about the charts in a positive way. It's awful that they did this and had she been on SCR after the label requested it, she'd have been an easy number 1, even with the split video streams...

It's honestly ridiculous that the label went to the trouble of asking to get it put back to SCR and the OCC DENYING it... (Providing that's true ofc)

Mariah's team looked into it and were informed that the Official Charts noticed the dip in Mariah's video position and calculated the Jukebox Heaven points into Mariah's total. That is what they are claiming they did but it doesn't add up. If they noticed her position was wrong why didn't they simply correct it before issuing the charts? She would have been number one on the video chart and number one on the main streaming chart. She streamed more than Wham last week, that is a fact, Youtube and Kworbs data show that she was the most watched video of the week. The OC deliberately removed sales from Mariah to give Ellie the number one. Disgusting.

Yes it can't be far off Band Aid now can it? It'll be the biggest seller ever soon as will a lot of Xmas songs. As Charlie says above it devalues the lists of best selling songs/million sellers.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 8th January 2020, 05:30 AM

As things stand there’s a long way to go to overtake Band Aid (which is currently on 4,661,000 sales)! That’s 2,028,000 ahead of Mariah. At the current rate, Mariah will be on 4.85m by the end of Christmas 2024. By which time, Band Aid will probably be on around 6m.

I guess it will take until some time in the 2030s for Mariah to overtake. By which point they’d both be in the region of 7m sales (which sounds so ridiculous :’) )

This is of course assuming that their popularity & rate of sales holds up, and that OCC’s streaming ratio remains the same for years to come!

Posted by: Steve201 10th January 2020, 12:48 AM

Yeh the sales will sound ridiculous if they count streams in the same way for years.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 10th January 2020, 01:13 AM

Ya when we look at it that way its ridiculous. Until a few years ago a million selling single was a huge success, what's a huge success for a single nowadays though?

Posted by: Bré 10th January 2020, 07:47 PM

The million mark being considered special has always been arbitrary, it just so happened that a fairly difficult sales mark to reach was also a nice round number. Not to mention that the million mark has always fluctuated in how difficult it is to achieve (in the mid-00s not even the absolute monster huge hits were able to get there, whereas even before streaming being included on the charts it was starting to become a slightly more routine milestone). How about just comparing the success of songs to other songs released in the same timeframe? tongue.gif

actually, until the finalpart of 1989-beginning of the 90s, a million singles sold was only certified gold, but during the 90s the market grew smaller and they changed the certification sistem (that´s why a lot of madonna hits from the 80s are not cerfied, because they didn´t achieved the million sales mark)

I'm not sure why the BPI hasn't moved the mark for platinum certification up again as streaming has clearly devalued what 600k units represents but hey ho ~

There is nothing wrong with the platinum certification mark being easier to achieve nowadays. Multiplatinum certifications exist. Also, they could always intruduce the diamont certification, like in the US.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 11th January 2020, 04:13 PM

I think it is much easier to achieve a platinum selling single now than ever and so many songs reach it but yet do not seem to be songs that are huge hits.

Posted by: Steve201 12th January 2020, 01:07 AM

Songs reach that as they are making their way UP the chart these days.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 12th January 2020, 07:14 AM

QUOTE(Steve201 @ Jan 12 2020, 01:07 AM) *
Songs reach that as they are making their way UP the chart these days.

Not really, they could enter at their peak & still easily achieve a certification. It’s little to do with the short term of their first few chart positions, and a lot more to do with the long haul.

Big hit songs (most of which are initially established by their inclusion in the most popular playlists) + their constant availability to stream, means it’s easier for them to accumulate sales over a long stretch of time. It’s also because the public don’t let go of certain hits, they’ll continue playing them for months/years.

That’s a huge difference to the days of physicals when there was a limited period of time a single would be heavily stocked. If a single was going to be popular enough to be platinum and a million seller, it would usually have had to have sold the bulk of its stock within 2 months to ensure this. Even in the download era, the demand for a song would eventually die down & it could take certain hits a long time to “trickle sell” their way to a certification.

Hit songs today just don’t face those barriers & have all the time in the world to reach a certification or “sell” a million.

QUOTE(Jay ☆ @ Jan 8 2020, 06:30 AM) *

Band Aid's popularity is decreasing every year, and the lyrics sound more and more archaic. It won't last much longer!

All I Want for Christmas Is You is back in the UK charts at #60, its 100th week in the Top 100! *.* Its total sales: 2,688,628.

It's off to a stronger start with audio streaming this year, compared to the same week in 2019:

Fri 13th Nov 2020 - #60
7,221 chart sales (ACR applied) / 14,110 sales
333 downloads
1,242,288 premium audio streaming
314,506 ad-funded audio streaming
454,368 video streaming

Fri 15th Nov 2019 - #77
6,162 chart sales (ACR applied) / 11,699 sales
624 downloads
969,389 premium audio streaming
268,486 ad-funded audio streaming
536,961 video streaming

It should end this year with total sales exceeding 3 million *.*

I hope Official Charts Company have sorted out their apparent problem with her video streaming this year unsure.gif (Last year on the Friday 27th Dec chart, OCC only had her down as having 714,076 video streams, whereas Wham had 2,249,051 & Pogues 1,244,542 - yet Mariah's views on YouTube UK that week were far greater than Wham or Pogues... #fix x).

Posted by: Bré 14th November 2020, 08:19 PM

Given that the rest of her streaming numbers are up from this time last year while her video streams are down, I have a feeling they're still siphoning off some of her video streams (which iirc only started happening partway through her run last year) oop ~

QUOTE(Oliver @ Nov 15 2020, 11:49 AM) *

Worse in theory, because the Christmas chart is on a Friday this year. Streams from Friday 18th-Wednesday 23rd will count towards the chart, but the Christmas Eve streams will be estimated by the OCC (Thursday streams are always estimated... and they'll probably underestimate it because they base it on the streaming trends of the previous 5 days. That won't properly take into account how the songs get huuuuge streams on Christmas Eve).

Then the streams that occur on Christmas Day itself will contribute to the Friday 1st January chart, but on the other days that week there won't be much listening of Christmas songs.

Last year was much more favourable because the chart was revealed on Friday 27th... so that included Christmas Eve streams and Christmas Day, while it was Boxing Day streams that were estimated. Alexa Goulding ended up benefiting the most from that though. tearsmile.gif

Posted by: T Boy 15th November 2020, 04:02 PM

It’s so ODD how people just stop listening to Christmas songs on Boxing Day. Christmas lasts for 12 days!

I think some people are just focusing on Christmas chart week when with the way Christmas songs are being listened to already she could easily be number one at any time in December. The only huge new song I can see between now and the Xmas chart is Miley/Dua although LM or another song could easily rise with albums out or coming out.

Mariah is doing some Holiday special this year though... though we have no info and there is a rumoured release of her version of 'Where Are You Christmas?' being released...

Posted by: joyride 16th November 2020, 11:39 AM

So the OCC are still effing with her video streams mad.gif

Mariah is on the Graham Norton show on the 27th to promote her Christmas special, she could get lucky and grab an early number 1 that week. It will also have the benefit of massive 1st December streams.

Posted by: Jay* 16th November 2020, 12:47 PM

It would require a lot of good luck to reach #1 earlier in December, it would certainly rely on normal hits having fairly weak sales!

Mariah's video streams were higher than Wham's and Pogues this week, so hopefully it's a sign that her streams are normal, just down on the equivalent week in 2019?

13th Nov 2020:
454,368 - Mariah (-15.38%)
354,533 - Wham (-6.82%)
84,570 - Pogues (-34.79%)

Ultimately these are the 'video streaming' sales OCC gave the 3 songs last week (with ACR applied):

414 - Mariah
330 - Wham!
81 - The Pogues

Whereas these were the video sales on 27th Dec '19 (again, with ACR applied):

2067 - Wham!
1142 - The Pogues
645 - Mariah

Personally I'd say that's a good indication that Mariah's video streams are being counted properly now!

Posted by: Bré 16th November 2020, 04:43 PM

Maybe video streams are just down a lot in general from last year then ~

The OCC's implementation of video streams has been dodgy and error ridden from day 1 though.

Posted by: oof 16th November 2020, 04:57 PM

Wasn't Mariah's first actual week at #1 supposed to be 13th December 2018, she could make it the corresponding week of this year if streams are high enough with no big hits (like Thank, U next which blocked it last time)

Thanks for the stats. It still doesnt sit right with me. On Youtubes charts Wham did 449k, the OCC also calculated less for it but no where near as much as they did for Mariah.

I bet they dont even look at official numbers, just make it up as they go along. Babyshark is number 1 on their video chart this week yet it's not even in YTs top 100 unsure.gif

Up to #12 in the midweeks! Interestingly it's following a similar pattern to last year, but comparatively a week earlier than usual.

15/11/2019: #77 | 13/11/2020: #60
22/11/2019: #59 | 20/11/2020: #31
29/11/2019: #34 | 27/11/2020: TBA (Midweek #12)
06/12/2019: #08

This will be the first time 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' has made the Top 20 in November. Would be even more impressive if it could get Top 10, but that might be a bit out of reach.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 24th November 2020, 07:49 PM

12 at this stage is great, i wonder has it any chance of Top 10 this week.

Posted by: Jay* 28th November 2020, 01:45 AM

Something that's pretty crazy: in the 'old rules' chart, All I Want for Christmas Is You is #2 this week! ohmy.gif It sold 36,387, but with ACR applied, that cut its sales down to 18,609 and pushed it down to #14.

In the same week in 2019 (29th November 2019), Mariah was #16 in the 'old rules' chart with 27,565, but #34 with 14,360 in the official chart.

That's an amazing improvement, and we're still not in December. I'm keeping everything crossed that it can somehow finally reach #1 officially.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 30th November 2020, 11:47 PM

I would be happy if it was just 1 week, if it stayed longer even greater.

Posted by: dannjohn 1st December 2020, 11:20 AM

It'd be amazing if it went 'Positions', 'Oh Santa!' then 'AIWFCIY'

That all very familiar position of Number 2 again this week.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 4th December 2020, 08:21 PM

The whole "will she finally be #1" thing has become such a key part of the festive season now. What are we even gonna talk about if she does do it?

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 5th December 2020, 04:29 PM

If she does it we will prob be hoping it will happen again.

Wonder can stay next week aswell.

Posted by: LMLou 12th December 2020, 11:18 AM

I wonder if/how well this will chart on the New Years chart. It’ll have the massive Xmas day streams for that chart but then not much else throughout the week, but then there’s the fact the charts are quite weak just now

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 12th December 2020, 12:40 PM

It will probably fade off alot at that point but still chart, part of me thinks she has a chance of a 3 week number 1 or definitely next week aswell, I'd love it to be the christmas number 1 but if it isnt I'm just happy its finally got to number 1.

Posted by: Christmasteve201 12th December 2020, 01:24 PM

I sort of hope it’ll be number one until January now with Taylor being the only real threat and then a download campaign on Xmas week. Then January will have a new number one to start the year.

Xmas day streams will be 1.3m or so which is huge and then Boxing Day will be 250-300k then 27th 100k then see you next Halloween for it. So it’ll be top 40 most likely until the 7th January

Posted by: Jay* 13th December 2020, 12:39 AM

Posted by: dhweck the halls 14th December 2020, 07:36 PM

posted this in the hot 100 thread last week and it might be too early to tell but if she ends up repeating the ‘90s and goes to #1 every year this decade solely bc of this song tearsmile.gif

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 14th December 2020, 08:15 PM

Its amazing, waits years for number 1 and is now number 1 there 2 years in a row, in the uk it took years aswell and is now looking like getting its 2nd week.

Posted by: Christmasteve201 14th December 2020, 08:22 PM

Think this is a view of how the UK will look in future years with Mariah too

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 14th December 2020, 10:39 PM

I'm hoping ireland follows next.

Posted by: Christmasteve201 14th December 2020, 10:42 PM

The Irish chart seems a bit slower to embrace Xmas this year, Mariah only at 22 and rising currently

Posted by: Michael Bubré 15th December 2020, 12:33 AM

Brenda Lee is actually gaining faster than Mariah and has overtaken her on Spotify in the US. I would kind of live for Brenda also getting her turn at the Hot 100 #1 this year.

Its still the highest Christmas song in the charts, in last weeks official chart Mariah was Number 5 here in Ireland up from Number 10.

From the clip i heard fall in love at Christmas isn't great at all so i will be sticking with the class all i want for Christmas is you which should have another great year this year, im hoping it can be the biggest selling of the festive Christmas songs again this year.

No doubt it will!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 5th November 2021, 03:22 PM

Re enters the Top 100 here in Ireland this week at Number 95, nice start for Mariah this year.

Posted by: -Jay- 6th November 2021, 03:35 AM

Not quite there yet in the UK! Its ACR weekly sales were 3,731, but the #100 sold 4,327.

New total: 3,220,874, including 7,302 full sales last week. Its weekly sales were up 129.9%, which means its weekly figure for the 29th October 2021 chart was 3,176! Quite decent pre-Halloween laugh.gif

So its total on 29th Oct was 3,213,572. Its total on 1st Jan 2021 was 3,178,734. That's 34,838 sales achieved from January to October!

There's potential for All I Want for Christmas Is You to sell 500k+ in November and December, so we could be seeing a total of 3.7m by the time Christmas 2021 is over. If this happens, it would go 6xPlatinum (3.6m is needed for that!).

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 9th November 2021, 12:28 AM

#3 in the UK, which marks the first time its ever been at that position! This is also its 30th week inside the Top 10.

Top 10 positions:

#1 - 2 times
#2 - 9 times
#3 - 1 time
#4 - 4 times
#5 - 5 times
#6 - 4 times
#7 - n/a
#8 - 5 times
#9 - n/a
#10 - n/a

I wonder if it'll ever manage to place at #7, #9 or #10?

Meanwhile... Mariah's new advert for McDonald's (specific to US customers):
