Lizzo's 'Truth Hurts' Tops Billboard Hot 100 for Second Week, Post Malone's 'Circles' Debuts in Top 10
9/9/2019 by Gary Trust

Lizzo tallies a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with her first leader on the list, "Truth Hurts."

Plus, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello's former Hot 100 No. 1 "Señorita," at No. 2, takes over as the most-heard song on U.S. radio, lifting 3-1 on the Radio Songs chart, and Post Malone's "Circles" launches at No. 7 on the Hot 100.

"Truth Hurts," released on Nice Life/Atlantic Records, spends a second week atop the Digital Song Sales chart, although down 28% to 38,000 sold in the week ending Sept. 5, according to Nielsen Music. (A week earlier, the song was helped by Lizzo's performance on the MTV Video Music Awards; a four-song set on NBC's Today; and two newly released versions: a DaBaby remix and a CID remix).

On Streaming Songs, the track hits a new high, rising 4-3 with a 1% gain to 34.7 million U.S. streams in the week ending Sept. 5. It holds at its No. 4 best on Radio Songs, up 6% to 103.9 million audience impressions in the week ending Sept. 8.

"Truth Hurts" concurrently notches a third week at No. 1 on both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs genre charts (which employ the same methodology as the Hot 100).

Mendes and Cabello's "Señorita" holds at No. 2 on the Hot 100, after topping the Aug. 31-dated chart. It reaches the Radio Songs summit with a 2% gain to 109.5 million in audience, becoming Mendes' first leader on the list and Cabello's second, after "Havana" (featuring Young Thug), which logged four weeks on top in December 2017-January 2018.

Billie Eilish's "Bad Guy," which led the Hot 100 dated Aug. 24, keeps at No. 3; Lil Tecca's "Ran$om" reaches the top five (6-4), as it spends a third week atop Streaming Songs (49.4 million, down 1%); Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road," featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, repeats at No. 5 on the Hot 100, after it dominated for a record 19 weeks; and Chris Brown's "No Guidance," featuring Drake, returns to its Hot 100 high (7-6), while notching a second week at No. 1 on Hot R&B Songs.

Post Malone's "Circles" soars onto the Hot 100 at No. 7, as it begins at No. 2 on Digital Song Sales (29,000 sold) and No. 5 on Streaming Songs (30.8 million streams), while nearing Radio Songs (17.9 million impressions).

Post Malone earns his eighth Hot 100 top 10, and sixth to debut in the top tier. Here's a recap:

Title, Peak Pos., Peak Date (Debut Pos.)
"Congratulations," feat. Quavo, No. 8, July 8, 2017 (No. 83)
"Rockstar," feat. 21 Savage, No. 1 (eight weeks), Oct. 28, 2017 (No. 2)
"Psycho," feat. Ty Dolla $ign, No. 1 (one week), June 16, 2018 (No. 2)
"Better Now," No. 3, Oct. 6, 2018 (No. 7)
"Sunflower (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse)," with Swae Lee, No. 1 (one week), Jan. 19, 2019 (No. 9)
"Wow.," No. 2, April 6, 2019 (No. 47)
"Goodbyes," feat. Young Thug, No. 3, July 20, 2019 (No. 3)
"Circles," No. 7, Sept. 14, 2019 (No. 7)

Post Malone charts his fifth Hot 100 top 10 of 2019, breaking a tie with Ariana Grande (four) for the most this year. Drake, Halsey, Khalid and Taylor Swift follow with three each.

(Rounding out stats for "Circles," the song marks the third time that "circle" has helped shape the Hot 100's top 10 in a song title. Billy Preston's "Will It Go Round in Circles" spent two weeks at No. 1 in 1973 and Belinda Carlisle's "Circle in the Sand" hit No. 7 in 1988.)

"Circles" is from Post Malone's third LP, Hollywood's Bleeding, released Friday (Sept. 6) and due to impact next week's Billboard 200 (dated Sept. 21).

Elsewhere in the Hot 100's top 10, Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber's No. 2-peaking "I Don't Care" rebounds 9-8; Khalid's No. 3 hit "Talk" retreats 8-9; and Post Malone's "Goodbyes" returns to the bracket (12-10).

If only 'Goodbyes' had hung onto the top 10 last week... I think it's been something crazy like only 3 or 4 weeks that Post Malone has not had at least one song in the top 10 since 'rockstar' entered it, and he'll probably have just started another fairly lengthy run in the top 10 now. Wonder if 'Sunflower' might even re-enter the top 10 so it ties the record for weeks in the top 10 after all.

Pretty good debut for A$AP Rocky there, especially as I don't think it really sounds much like a hit single.
